914World.com _ 914World Garage _ How do you disassemble a stock steering wheel?

Posted by: Johny Blackstain Feb 21 2007, 03:55 PM

huh.gif How does the stock steering wheel come apart? Bought one on eBay, read the thread about modifying a 4 to fit a 6, can't figure out how it comes apart. Specifically, removing the horn pad from the wheel, w/out damaging anything? Thanks. cool_shades.gif

I believe you can grab the wheel with your left hand, grap the horn pad with your right hand (or vice versa), and twist the horn pad counterclockwise while keeping the weel straight. The horn pad should twist about 1/8 turn, then pulls off. There should be a wire connecting the pad to the column (for the horn). Then there is a 22mm (I think) nut that holds the wheel to the shaft.

beerchug.gif Kick A**! Thanks you, it worked & the wire was already broken so no damage. Thank you. cool_shades.gif

i'm pretty sure it's a 27 mm nut.
i use an SAE 1 1/16 socket to take it off.

Fantastic... now does anyone have a 914-6 turn signal cancelling ring? It's missing from the Momo in the car now. I swear I must be the 47th owner of this car or something like that. Everything has been futzed with. Also, does anyone recognize this part number: 914 347 809 00?!! Book says 803 10 is rubber & 806 10 is leather. What did I buy? cool_shades.gif

Mister PET says:
(5) 914 347 809 00 STEERING WHEEL FOAM PART 1
It's on the "1972 and later" page.

Sounds like a replacement?? Not sure.

I found it, thank you. Makes no sense... stamped on the inside, on the actual hub. Steering wheel is leather, not foam or rubber. Could definitely use a rebuid. Are the parts available... leather cover, rubber cap, cork washers, rubber gromets, etc... ? Thanks. cool_shades.gif

Thanks again, as usual. I'll wait for the next time he sells a kit. The one on now has 3 bids on it & is up to $32.00! laugh.gif I think I bought my PET from that guy. Have to concentrate on getting a garage w/ a house attached to it. Spending too much time idea.gif of 914's & not enough on finding a home. cool_shades.gif
