cv joints --- best stuff to use to clean them to be repacked--- brake cleaner?---anything to watch out for

is it safe to clean the crap off the outside of my trans with engine degreaser or will it eat the case?

I use a rag to knock the big chunks off of and from the inners of the cv's, and then thrown them in a solvent tank for a few hours. Brake clean to ensure no solvent residue. Brake clean on it's own will be tough, lots of cans, and one killer headache.

De-greaser is fine on the trans case.
