914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 5-speed w/LSD in 1970

From the PCA site:

How many of the 1970 5-speed w/LSD were produced? Where is the number imprinted on the transmission?

Very few I have heard and only as a ordered option. Damn cars were expensive enough just stock and didn't sell well either..sixes I mean.

I think it was an option. There is no tranny model which is "stock" with an LSD.

You would be surprised. Lots of northern cars where optioned with the LSD (both sixes and 4's)

It was very rare that I ran across a factory LSD while I lived in Texas.

But moving here.. I have seen 8-10 in the last 3 years.

So where is the "stamp" on the transmission? I want to see if mine has one (1970 1.7L).

On the bottom rib of the tranny that runs longitudinally, near the diff. The number is either HA for standard diff or HB for LS diff. This is not to say that the tranny is still original tho.

Cool, now I can run around looking at all the junkyard trannies checking the numbers...

So what was the LSD Mechinism? Clutch & spring type? Other? Has anyone had an experiance with the Quaif (qeef laugh.gif ) LSD's specifically on the street?

Posted by: davep Nov 27 2003, 11:00 AM

Yes it was a disc type originally. At one time I bought a 904 LSD, but doing the conversion was beyond me at the time. Stoddard's used to have fantastic deals back in the 70's.

You can find the 901 LSD around that will drop in to your 914 tranny. I have seen them in the $800 range but you will need to rebuild it and then set the backlash and all that other tranny voodoo stuff.
