I think that the best thing that ever happened to my welding skills was learning how to work with a dodgy Aceteline regulator, keeping a close eye on what's going on with the flame as the gas pressure popped up and down.
Funny thing is, going out and buying a new one would cost me more than what the whole setup cost me about 10 years ago when I bought it.

I totally agree with you about accet. welding...
I tried to teach myself how to use it for some body work.
When I went back to the MIG, my skills were way up just from watching the pool more..
