Says it was rebuilt 2,000 miles ago by Performance House in Southern California. But the case is super dirty. It has sat for 16 years in the car. The engine is a 2.5ss six
The oil was very clean.

You kinda spell it out in your post. I'd say, basically, close ratio gears that help keep that 2.5 spun up to where it belongs.
I'm currently running my 2.5 on a fresh stock 75 915 (temporarily). I literally can't get up the hill at the end of my street without putting it back into first.
That 2.5 needs to spool up and be kept there, almost like a turbo.
