Well I had my 914 up for sale for a while. My brother finaly convinced me to keep it. If I get it running he will take care of the body work. So as of now the car has a 1.7liter type 4 Bus motor. The PO did a ring job, but after 300 miles the 2&4 cyl have 30psi of pressure, and the valves arenot opening. I think its the cam. I pulled the motor today, and am going to start tearing down the motor. I was wondering if you knew of any good books that discuss the rebuild of AC motors?
Also What is the differance between the type 4 bus motor and the 914 motor? Would I be better off finding a old 914 2L and rebuilding that?

The Bus motors tend to have very low compression, less-aggressive cams, and often (particularly the 1.8 and 2.0 ones) smaller valves than the 914 versions of the same size engine. The oil filler and dipstick setup is different, and bolts onto the bottom-front (914 orientation) of the motor. You can't fit the funnel for the filler and dipstick into a 914 body that way, so you need to convert to a 914-style filler (easy) and dipstick (not so easy). Have to drill the hole for the 914 dipstick and press in a tube. Easy if you do it right, very unhappy if you do it wrong....

I was told it was a bus motor. Is there a way to tell the differance? Because what you said, It sounds like it is a 914 motor.

What are the letters and numbers on the block?
The numbers are EA049384 And then there is also a W2 marked by where the Tranny bolts on.

Is there a "funnel" bolted onto the front side of the case over on the left side at the bottom? If so then it's a Bus engine. If not, it ain't. Could be a 411 wagon (I think) or a 914 engine. Functionally identical.

No there is no Funnle. So are the internals of the motors the same?
EA was also used in the 411. Same power, same torque, same compression, same displacement. One version (I think it was the wagon, but it could have been the sedan) used a 914-style oil filler and dipstick; the other used the Bus-style one.
The internals on the EA-code 411 engine should be the same as the EA-code 914 engine.

Please write a book on this crap. If Wayne can "write" a book... I know you can collaborate as well as he can. Write a "How to rebuild your T4" book.
The ones available currently.. are close to worthless and old school.

EA 000001 - EA 057000 are the engine codes for a 1972 1.7 914.
There were no in depth books, and still are not any that are up to date. Thats why I did a video.
I have people approach me about writing a book all the time, but a video is so much better.
Problem with a book is finding a publisher that will believe that it will sale, they think no one builds 914s anymore!
Problem with the video: Most people dont have VCR's and TV's in the garage. Its also gets old fast forwarding..backing up... forward...back...back some more.. The book can be flipped from page to page faster than I can work the remote.
I have seen 2-3 new 914 related books released in the last 4 years. There should be NO reason why you cant get a book published.
Somebody here knows the name of the publishing company.. I think the writer was Patrick Dempsey (probably related to Wayne)
