You need tabs on your A-arms, and you need the triangle pieces that reinforce the sheet metal where those plates mount..

Hold on, be right back..

With that, and some super heavy springs in the back, you'll be able to drift your ass off!

going to buy the cheater ones so I dont have to take off tank...ps motor is out heads are off waiting for new gaskets coming by ups tomorrow...Aaron, do you still have the original fuchs for sale (4lug)? cool.gif

Posted by: Aaron Cox Nov 30 2003, 07:10 PM

i dunno about the cheater ones, i think "steve" did on his six and they started to pull through. ohmy.gif . ill have the rims in a month or two. still finding my five lugs sad.gif

Your wasting your time with a stock front bar. It was designed in 1970 for 60-80 lb rear springs. Do you really think it helps with todays tires/shocks/springs ??

Oh.. and Dave D can tell you about the cheater kit.... again... Do it right.. do it once (worthless piece of shit that shouldnt even be listed in somebodies TECH area)

If your too lazy to remove the tank.... you dont need sway bar.

(cracking his ass because I can)

Bradster- wasnt there some 930 that had an 18mm thru the body swaybar?

Posted by: Brad Roberts Nov 30 2003, 08:48 PM

Correct grasshopper. 1976 or so (give or take a year). Europe had the turbo before we did.

i have a stock bar to put in- im on the hunt for an 18mm i guess wink.gif

Posted by: Brad Roberts Nov 30 2003, 08:52 PM

Most people pull them out... you should be able to find a stock 18mm. Check shops who work on 930's and ask them if they have one laying around.

Thanks for the where-to-look man. smilie_pokal.gif

Not everything we need is for sale. Sometimes you have to ask for it. I come across some awesome deals by contacting shop owners and ASKING for what I might need.

so its a bolt in I would imagine?

Posted by: Brad Roberts Nov 30 2003, 09:12 PM

Yes. But you still have to drill the holes... make a nut plate... cut the inside frame rail.. and make sure your control arms have the tabs.

Another reason why I like the mega-buck Smart Bar... your control arms dont need the tabs on them.

Posted by: Dave_Darling Nov 30 2003, 10:02 PM

Yup. It's easier, but more expensive, to buy the nut-plate already made.

A stock front sway bar and 100# rear springs are a pretty good match. If you're going with more rear spring rate, you will need more front sway bar or larger front torsion bars. The Tarrett piece is a work of art...

Never ever ever ever use the "no tank removal required" kit. It is just two U-bolts per side, and it'll tear through in short order. Really sucks.

Sadly, I don't control what stuff goes in the catalog. If I did, I'd s**tcan those, the four-to-five adaptors, the 009 distributor, and a variety of other "suboptimal" parts...

well im buying some 914/6 control arms and going with a stock swaybar of a 6 for now(if I can get it cheap enough). Figure that and 150s in the rear is better than nothing. I will go with the permanent triangle mount. Hey how do I know if my struts are still good without tearing them apart? There is no leakage and the car rides decently when it has a motor in it, lol. Would it be ok to upgrade the springs and keep the stock Boge(orange) struts for a short period of time?

Posted by: Aaron Cox Nov 30 2003, 10:14 PM

boge = black
koni = red/orange

orange strut eh? front or rear?

914/6 or 911 control arms require different torsion bars, the splines are different, and i think ball joints are different then late model 4 cylinders (correct me if im wrong) .

Posted by: Brad Roberts Nov 30 2003, 10:16 PM

The 9146 control arms have different torsion bars... make damn sure you get EVERYTHING. If the person doesnt have the rear torsion bar adjuster cups ... run. Yours will not fit. The spline count is different between a 4 and 6.

Push down on the car hard and fast one side at a time. If it bounces more than 3 times.. the shocks are toast.

Posted by: DrifterJay Nov 30 2003, 11:13 PM

150 for arms, swaybar and crossmember max
ok price I think.

I'm adding a stock sway bar as well. Car had the "A" tabs on the arms already. Have everything else. Question is what is the best way to secure the bolts thru the body? Earlier post suggests making a nut plate, I assume that would be welded in. Is that what was on the 914 that was equipt with sway bars from the factory. I have 4 of these cars and none have a stock sway bar that I can use for a visual. Thanks for all the help.

This is a great site for a great car. :beer1:

Jared,

tell him what he wants to know... dont post hyperlinks to other tech articles.

The factory cars had a extra piece of steel installed at the factory.

B

Posted by: Brad Roberts Dec 1 2003, 12:18 AM

He doesnt need the crossbar.. they are all identical.

B

Posted by: Aaron Cox Dec 1 2003, 04:42 PM

AH.... i thought they were spline specific ( why? i dunno)

Posted by: Dave_Darling Dec 2 2003, 01:02 PM

The factory cars had three nuts welded to the inner fender well.

The Weltmeister kit has a nut-plate--a triangle of metal with three nuts welded to it and a hole in the middle for the bar.

You can make your own nut-plate (we--mostly B--did for Jenny's car) or buy the WM one. No biggie either way, really.

I think the tech article is a good link to post. It answers a whole lot of questions that are closely related to the ones that are being asked. Plus it's a Pelican article... wink.gif And it's a helluva lot easier than re-typing all of that same info all over again.
