First, can a complete DIY novice do a valve adjustment on a six?

Do you need to drain the oil first?

How do you turn the engine's crank for find TDC and other markings?

Any pointers to speed this procedure up?

Yes you have to drain the oil. All 10 or 11 quarts of it. You also need to remove both upper and lower valve covers. It would probably help your cause to have individual feelers that can get in the space around the rockers (it is tight). At ths point it is just a matter of finding TDC on #1 and going through the firing order checking the clearances. It is not too easy, but can be done. It'll be good practice.
