914World.com _ 914World Garage _ cylinder head rings dont FIT!!!!

Posted by: DrifterJay Dec 2 2003, 06:21 PM

what gives...I ordered the 1.7 gasket kit from pelican, received it last night, and it is supposedly the 1.7 as stated on the package. So I am putting the gaskets in the head and the rings do not fucking FIT!!!!!there are two different sizes, one which is about 1.5 too big in diameter, but I believe is the the correct thickness, the other which is much smaller and thicker. Question is, they should just slid right in and be snug right? Or do they have to be forced? ohmy.gif or did they give me 1.8 or 2.0 gaskets?

wrong is wrong, can't be made right.

Hey, wait, call Pelican.

Are the small thick ones for between the cylinders and the case? You don't have to run a seal between the head and the cylinder. In fact it's often recommended to be left out. Compression bump!

Posted by: URY914 Dec 2 2003, 07:17 PM

See if those are between the case to cylinder, not the cylinder to head.

Sorry about the BFH reply. Seemed to fit the post at the time.

Do not use a a headgasket as they leak. Lap the cylinders into the head with valve lapping compound.

you mean like a silicon gasket sealant of some kind?

Posted by: Aaron Cox Dec 2 2003, 07:24 PM

its an abbrasive compund. "valve lapping compund".

Lapping is the tight mating of surfaces, by leveling those surfaces with friction created between (the parts).

I'm out of my place, but it's like a heavy cut compound, sounds like.

gotta have it at Kragen right?

Posted by: Aaron Cox Dec 2 2003, 07:28 PM

sure do. i might even have some...

thanx guys, I appreciate the help...was bummed because I envisioned my car being a driveway ornament for yet another week....motor will be built and in before 2!

Posted by: steve@ottosvenice.com Dec 2 2003, 08:02 PM

I lap the barrels to the Head. VOA had a service bulletin out that says not to use the head sealing ring.-Steve

Usually the can has a fine grit on one side and coarse grit on the other. I think its carbonundum(sp) or some such critter.

Don't use them! calculate your CR without them and then hand lap each cylinder, into each head with lapping compound. Assemble without the gaskets and it'll live a much better life. VW issued a bulletin about it back in the 80s.....

Last set I used was so long ago I cannot remember it! I have atleast 2,000 of those gaskets here that are worthless to me.

Posted by: DrifterJay Dec 2 2003, 08:53 PM

heads are on..used the fine compound...its a beautiful thing...thanx

Posted by: DrifterJay Dec 2 2003, 08:55 PM

what do you think the compression ratio bump would be from stock to what it is without the seals

Posted by: Jake Raby Dec 2 2003, 11:30 PM

You'll bump up about .5 of one digit, if nothing else is changed.

Here a trick from the Old Country:

Make sure you clean off all the lapping compound before you put it all back together.

That stuff can do a lot of damage if not completly cleaned up.

Posted by: Dave_Darling Dec 3 2003, 12:05 PM

The cylinder base seals are a different thickness and diameter than the ones for the cylinder to head joint.

There is a tech bulletin from VW that says not to use the head gaskets but to add shims under the cylinders to maintain the stock compression ratio. For whatever reason, Porsche did not follow suit.

You can find the bulletin on-line at http://www.dolphinsci.com/techbull.html .
