914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Conversion Tachs

Posted by: marks914 Apr 23 2007, 10:13 AM

Here is another gauge product that I have been working on. I have had several people ask me about a tachometer that could handle a modern ignition system. Most of the speedo shops charge $250+ to modify tachs for an upgraded ignition system or a V8 conversion.

What I have done is take a 914 tach housing and retrofit it with new, modern internals. The tach has a switch for 4-6-8cylinder applications. It also has a new UV resistant vinyl overlay on the face with the new nomenclature spacing. I can put any type of redline you want on it, and it’s the same price for black or white face.

I also strip and re paint the trim rings and replace or restore the lens, so you not only get a modern, fast reacting tach, but one that is essentially restored as well.

Pictured is an early model. Late tachs look essentially the same but the turn signal and high beam indicator are flipped to the bottom to make room for the nomenclature on the top of the face.

I tested one Sunday and it worked great, quick response, steady needle (much better than the V8 converted tach I have now). It has easy three wire hookup and even comes with male spade connectors to plug right into your existing harness. The standard bulbs all go right back into place, it’s a really easy plug-n-play install.

PRICING:

I was thinking about $150 to convert a tach that was sent to me. What do you think ? Any interest?

The heater is working well, I really need another week or two of testing to make sure its ready for market.

Another project I am working on is a restored turn signal/wiper column switch assembly including restored arms with the proper graphics on them. The unit would also have an optional microswitch installed for a washer pump. Should be around$50

Looks great as usual. Killer pricing. can you also change the RPM range on the tach? Like a 10K tach?

Right now I only have a 8K tach available. When I recoup my R&D costs, I will investigate a 10,000 RPM tach. I can also put the redline whwrever you want.

What about putting a vaccum guage on it or a boost guage for the subi models?

Any way of doing that?

Rick-
It should work. I would be willing to send you a "test" tach to make sure. If it does work, send it to me with yur core and I will convert yours. It usually takes a few days. I can have it drop shipped from the supplier.

MSD ignitions, sometimes a tach adapter is required MSD-8910 for voltage trigger (mine) tachs and MSD-8920 for magnetic pickup.

BJH-
It should work. Its calibrated for 4-6-8 cylinder models. If you are willing to take a few minutes, I can have a test unit drop shipped to you to see if it works.

andrew-
Yes, we can do that

Pffft_
of course it matches.

OK,
I checked with the supplier. This tach works on most ignition systems.
The MSD guys will need an adapter.
The Suby guys will have to wait a week or so.
I have the supplier sending me an inductive pickup type of tach to try to fit into the housing.
It will be about $20 more, but it beats buying an adapter.
