I want to build a test stand. Not just any stand, I want it to have Elec, Fule, instrumentation  (914). If you have built one let me see. If not toss in your best ideas for this design.

I found this on a 356. Do we have a drawing like this for 914's?

Here is an idea.

Get an old parts car...cut it at the firewall, throw out the frommt half...

Keep the wiring harness, and the ignition...and dash insert...

Wire all that to the firewall, facing the motor...

Now remove hood, and remove a good section of the floor of the trunk so you can see.
Cut everything away that you dont need...just leave the mounting places for the motor/tranny...

A simple, and cool stand

I would guess you'd need to define what you want in a "full instrumentation" setup. The stock gauges don't show much of what I'd be interested in seeing in assuring a healthy setup. If I were to go to the trouble of hooking up instruments, I think I'd want at a minumum oil temp and pressure, and a generator light. Next step up would be a CHT, volt and amp meter, then a WBO2 sensor. It'll get expensive fast. How much $$ you want to spend will depend on what it's worth to you.

Well, I don't have the instrumentation, but I built my 'run' stands using VW transporter tranny bell-housings and standard 4-wheel (V8 type) engine stands. I only installed starter motors, ignition and starter switches ...





It would be cool to have the instrumentation like the diagram you have though ... I would need set ups for both 4 and 6 cyllinder engines, so I'd need to build a separate instrumentation 'box' for each type, then could move it to either stand as needed.

why you'd want a test stand? Responses?

You can see the 4x4 that are secured to a metal work table (very heavy duty)
I put the engine mount bar on the motor and used ratchet straps to secure it all together. over the transaxle and on each end of the engine bar.

Wired up a switch for ignition cut off. and had a remote start trigger. toggle swith for power to fule pump. and mounted the voltage regulator and battery as it would have been in the car. fuel pump was plumbed off a lawn mower gas tank.
