914World.com _ 914World Garage _ OK- Here Comes A Dumb Question

Posted by: kconway May 8 2007, 12:35 PM

I'm prepping my car for bodywork and paint. I'm going to pull the engine and trans then have it flatbed towed to my bodyshop. welder.gif

Here's the question. Without the engine/trans in, what keeps the rear hubs from falling out? confused24.gif Is it the outer CV joint? I guess didn't plan on taking the axels off completely. Am I okay to have it moved around that way without damaging something?

Remove the axles with the stubs, remove the stubs from the axles, reinstall the stubs and tighten the castellated nuts. They don't have to be brought to full torque, but they need to be tight. The Cap'n

you will be fine, just bag the ends up

worst case take a bungie cord and sling your axels so that they are level

You don't need to pull the stub axle's to remove the outer CV's but all you

need to do is use some wire and make a loop and hang your axle's from above.

Make sure the loop is loose so the axle can spin inside it, bailing wire is good,

insulated wire can catch and wrap around axle.

I sacrifice a couple of coat hangers and make nice big loops for the axle shafts so they hang about level or a little high at the inner (loose) ends. Hasn't failed me yet.
