IT all really started when I bought her in 98...here she was

Attached Image

It all started when.....after many (5 or so) years of using and trying to improve my 4 cylinder performance I blew a heli coiled plug at an autoX....well that was the end I had already sunk a shit load of $$$$ into my ride and another shit load of time and I was DONE!! time for a sixer!! see the below web site for things I did previously to my lil friend by the time I blew the plug it was a 2056 with a KH header and MSD ign.

http://www.daybydayco.com/car4web/914.html

OK the scoop (AKA what I have bought so far)

-Engines [u](3)

A 2.4 ltr 2.4 with a 7r case and CIS.

A basket case 2.4 with rebuilt and ported heads, 2.2S P&C's and S+ cams +all new "stuff" to assemble it.

Lastly a rebuil 2.7 with all the good machine work done newly rebuilt heads, Ross 9.8 P&C's and GE 40 cams.

For induction I have weber 40IDS carbs

For exhaust I have European racing headers and muffler

For Ignition I have a HPV Crank fire setup

For Fuel I have a Carter rotory pump and a 15 gallon cell all lines will be AN/SS braided.

Suspension is out of a SC with Bilstein shocks, 22mm front sway stock rear sway, mono balls up front. 21mm TBars and 180lb springs

The body panels are ALL FG hood, trunk, skirts, valances, bumpers and flares.

The oil system is stock 914-6 tank and Earls front mount cooler with GT shroud

MISC stuff in no particular order.....solid mounts, Momo wheel, quick release hub, WM short shifter, Momo seats, GT door pulls, Pilot fogs, NEW Porsche exterior mirrors and a shit load I am forgetting.

Here is what she started as.......

now let us see a mock up of the panels in place?? BTW you will see cage pics throughout these photos....the main bars were pre bent all needed fitting and my tie in to suspension points was a custom jobby aktion035.gif OH I forgot the 911 dash conversion peices in my parts stash descript!!

I got to check out the progress soon. When is the fire up party?

Posted by: degreeoff Jun 18 2007, 09:39 PM

Well SHIT! I am now going to need more paint for sure.... (after mixing) 4 gallons total applied (self etch/primer/color/clear) and I have not touched the bolt on bits!!

ALSO word of wisdom...the rod for braking HAS to be lengthened by about 3/4" to work with a 23mm MC and the pipes that lead in from the reseviour(SP?) bent and the DAMN thing BARLEY FITS!!! but it will fit. Brake line bending is not as easy as it looks (yes I fronted for the $40 brake line kit on Ebay....)... smilie_pokal.gif I missed my pedal cluster pic but they are PURDY! having a cabinet sand blaster is DA BOMB!

Posted by: degreeoff Jul 28 2007, 04:41 PM

Ok so I HAVE been working the last few days @ a JOB and a wee bit on the car...OMG! Sept 15th!!

So let me tell you the devil is in the details...SHEEZ! I thought it would be quick and simple BUT as I have once again learned the "custom" sheet takes time!

OK so I finished the oil cooler plumbing, as luck would have it the two bolts that held the old rear brake balancer were in just the right spot to put the bracket with the Mocal oil thermostat (I had to offset the bolt holes about 1/4") and the plumbing all fits in there even the adapters for AN fittings...just a little manicure of the rear quarter panel that will not be seen.

I also ran the HUGE battery cable and mounted the cutoff switch and lastly figured out a B E A utiful spot for the Crankfire setup. A few nylon spacers and it went right over the top of my harness mounting bolts/eyes....

BTW I was thinking of a piece of lexan for the hole I am about to cut in the firewall for timing the car...be pretty cool to see the engine working....... any thoughts on that?

Posted by: DrifterJay Jul 28 2007, 04:48 PM

Do it!

Posted by: degreeoff Jul 28 2007, 04:53 PM

Woops CANCEL that thought.......I dont even NEED a hole cut its an HPX dial in your timing.....right??

Posted by: degreeoff Aug 5 2007, 08:04 PM

OK so the list goes on....First off a couple of weeks ago I flew my tranny up to Doc Evil to have him check it out and put in the Billet Intermediate plate, then went up Sat and picked it up...Kudo's man!...Thats a headache well worth the cashola!

- things not pictured are wiring the tank and fuel pump, also installed the sub belt eye bolts..... DONE
-wired the HPV ignition, interestingly enough the relay for my hot start kit worked for the relay on the HPV....WHO KNEW??..... DONE
-finished plumbing the fuel line to the rear of the engine bay.....DONE
-installed the oil catch tank and plumbing.....DONE
-installed the steering column and the momo adapter and the quick release, greased all bearings cleaned ETC ETC ETC...smooth as silk now....DONE
-installed 911 dash and built the lower cover panels as well as installed the Moroso OVER PRICED fricken 5 switch panel.....DONE

Well I just bought this early (old but new and 1/2 modified) muffler for my 914-6 conversion and after cutting off the old tail piece found this "how to" sheet inside...

Its a simple mod and easy to do IF
-you have a welder
-have a die grinder cutoff wheel and or dremel
-have a body saw and or a dremel

The 2" pipes were already on when I bought the muffler. Here it is

This is a great build. I really like all the detailed pictures. I'm starting a subie conversion and have printed many of your pictures for reference of body details and your ideas. I am trying to decide how to stiffen the body for street use. I am going to build a front motor mount similiar to your's for the subie. The only suggestion I would give is to run the ground to the motor or tranny first then to the body or also to the body. I would not count on a forever good ground through the body to the motor. I imagine you are going to use the ground strap from the tranny to the body. This means you have two areas that have to remain good. Also use dielectric gease on all the connections. A few years down to road and you will be happy you did. You have gone to great detail on your build, I love it. What brand and type of paint did you use? I read where it was self etching primer so I guess it was two part epoxy primer and probably non sanding so that will probably be forever. Is the top coat single stage urethane? I wish the 914 group could get a fleet discount from ppg or some other company. We could cut paint cost in half. For a short time I could get a discount on ppg and it was about 40% less on the price. I'm anxious to see the completion. Thanks again for the pictures I probably would have paid cash for them.

I do not like to critique other peoples work. I try to keep my mouth shut unless it's my own project. I am sincerely impressed with the work on this project. Well thought out and executed. Done right! Time and patience always pays off in the end result and this projects reflects exactly that. Even the little girl approves! I am not a fan of green but I love this one. Well I am on it now....Progress includes teardown of my 2.4 ltr doner which was a STEAL!! I found this motor on the bird board and bought it because it was a 2.4 with a 7r case for my # 2 engine . Guy had it sitting in the kitchen of his high $$$ NW DC apt on the 9th floor. it came complete!! with hyd tensioners, SSI's, complete CIS, dizzy with Ign module upgrade, and turbo valve covers and something I just discovered...a neat billit sump plate cover.....I paid $950....I sold the CIS for $275 and the rest will pay for plus profit me I am sure as well as give me a 'T' motor 7R case that will end up with my 2.2 'S' pistons and 'S' cams with 'S' spec ported heads!!!!1 Ha ha ha ha ha...2 engines @ 200+ HP....More power Ru hu hu hugh. (yes I will be looking for a ass dragger after I finish this car)

The short block you see is a 50k mile motor already line bored with case savers and will be a 2.7 with 9.5 to 1 Ross P & C's, GE 40 cams, ported heads, webers and a crank fire ignition. beerchug.gif You see my bench where I have yellow storage bins full of all my rebuild hardware from PP with typed labels...anal I know!!

You sold the CIS for 250? I would have thought you could have got a lot more for that.

Nice score. I must say I'm kinda jealous. I really want to build a 2.4 into a 2.5 myself.

Posted by: degreeoff Jan 10 2008, 05:41 PM

Well I got the P&C's on...deck height @ .987mm....ouuu its tight but it'll live with the Ross pistons and GE40 cams...while installing I A) forgot while on piston/cylinder #5 that the wrist pins needed 2 spiralloc retainers...(I had a bag of of them and thought there were 6...LOL) @ 5 I realized that there were 12 MINUS 1! that I now wait for from Cali.... AND cool.gif that one of my cylinders had a wee bit of pitting on the sealing surface that I needed to swap out...THANK THE LORD I had a spare set from one of my spare motors....of the same height group

I will keep ya'll up to date as I progress as this is my first 911 build and I am SURE I will F up a few more times.....Cam timing is going to be a bitch.... smash.gif

I thought less than 1.3mm of deck height is pushing it? You may want to do the valve to piston clearance check just to be sure. confused24.gif

Ok so I started out with waynes book How to rebuild and modify porsche 911 engines......OKay it was a big help BUT WTF.gif with some of the writing....It took me 6- re-reads to understand some of it ( all cam timing issues before it clicked into place....THEN it really clicked. I could do one of these in my sleep.

So the spiralocs came in from Cali, folks over there @ Ross pistons kick ass! They just sent me some @ no charge even though I didnt originally buy the pistons cool shit.

Pics are of the mock up / preassemble showing cam timing and the sprocket depth measurements. I got the tools off Ebay and they were a hell of alot cheaper than the pelican tools biggrin.gif and the last one is of my purdy baby all set and ready to be sealed up. Who's doing your powder coat work? Local? Always on the lookout for a convenient PC shop in Columbia/Laurel area.
Had work done a couple of places - Powder Coat Finishes in Balto (excellent work but looooong lead time) and East Coast Powder coat (who's website now appears to be gone, not suprised as I going to recommend not using their services), and another place just off Rt.1 and 32 (can't remember the name - good work but $$$).
I know of another guy in Beltsville doing a home business, but haven't had any work done there - yet.

He's about 2weeks out and charged me 200-250 for fan strap, fan, fan housing carbs linkage, V/C's, cam covers, 1 block off plate, aircleaner base/tops and manifold.
I saw some of his work on MC parts very neat and clean.

Thanks man, I believe I have being doing the best I can. I will say that there are flaws but few and far between IMHO. I have enjoyed the 6 engine so far as I do plan on a 911(73 RS look....drool) for my next project!! I have a sweet engine ready to be built for that one.

Posted by: crash914 Feb 7 2008, 09:29 PM

Hey Josh, I just picked up your old hood and trunk lid from a guy on the eastern shore...you need them back?

I will be digging into the car tomorrow to see what I have...

Posted by: degreeoff Feb 8 2008, 06:39 AM

Herb thats funny...I gave them away to him for a 'grass roots' racing deal.....Funny how they came full circle. Now you have the old flares, and lids from ole betsy...

Posted by: crash914 Feb 8 2008, 07:04 AM

I thought it was funny too...the car was pretty far gone. One of these days I would like to do a grassroots car...this one is just not it...

OK so I wanted to wheel her out for a few body peices on pics....NOTICED some SERIOUS waves in the hood (fr) ...damn it all shows in natural light!!! (back to bondo!!)

Well after 3 fricken weeks!!! I should have my powder coated stuff back from the dude @ Premier....been polishing wheels (no fun BTW, pics to come after paint!) and sent off my GT door panel pulls and bits to Bob @ ABC (pics when they come in!).

My carb parts came in from Richard @ PMO. 36mm chokes (VS 38 that were in there) and 160 mains (VS 155) and F5 emulsion tubes (VS F26) all per his recomendations...SOOOooo it was time to tear em apart and rebuild.

WHO KNEW??? there were so many parts in an IDS carb.....Funny thing is after taking it ALL apart I understand how it works....Carbs look DAMN good after 40 years dont you think?

I might be able to help. Kids B-ball is over now. Been reading this thread. I'll check here or pm me if next weekend. Herb, if the weather's dry I might bring the 914 .. I could pick you up. Gotta warn ya tho' - I don't have the heat hooked up.

Herb - you think the engine dolly I built might help?

At RRC '07 they were moving a 3.2 from the back of a truck to a van and they had 3 or 4 people trying to move it and they dropped it in the gravel. I would play it safe and have 4 people.. confused24.gif

Posted by: jd74914 Feb 25 2008, 01:23 PM

Really? My dad and I picked up a complete 2.2 w/ MFI and walked it a ways to put it into our truck bed. If you are careful it should be fine. smile.gif

Posted by: crash914 Feb 25 2008, 01:41 PM

The good thing is that it only has to go down...gravity should help with that...

I have moved a 4 cylinder by myself...another time my wife helped move one through a doorway over a curb...

Matt, sounds good. I would like to ride in a running 914...

Could you elaborate a little about your EZ wiring harness. I've got one hell of a rat's nest to sort out with mine.

Thanks

To elaborate on the EZ wiring harness....it was CHEAP and it was all there and they (manufacturer) were very helpful but I am afraid that is all I can offer....I had to modify it a bit as it is designed for the hotrods (front engine). BUT if I did it right which as a non electrical guru I would say I have a 90% or better chance that it is goinna work. it was well woth it and it is CLEAN and all new (AKA no OWI old wire issues)

ALSO to be noted...I cannot imagine trying to do this new harness for a factory car with all the goodies that came stock....This has basic lights and wipers and gauges nothing more.

I'm doing the same thing in the Healey right now! I have the 12 curcuit and had to add one for the electric cooling fan. But it was cheap and it's new.

OK so I am one tired SOB!!! yawn.gif It has been 3 days of nonstop nonsense! BUT the plus side is that for all intents and purposes I am done with the mechanical BS. Things left to do are add oil (anyone know how much??? add gas add battery (hope there are no zap zap EEeewwww what the hell is burnin?) add spark plugs and add the oil tank to case breather hose.......

Because I want to be sure of running state before I leave Thursday for a 10 day ski VACA and before I put BEAUtiful paint on.....

So tomorrow I shall...........

Source a oil hose.....install.........

Set timing and verify plug order on my new age fandangled HPX crankfire setup..............

Add battery...check for proper circut workings.........

Add oil and crank her over without spark plugs to build oil pressure........

Add gas and turn on the pump making sure the carbs are not spilling over and or leaking from a fuel line I forgot to tighten.....

Grab my handy dandy class SUPER DUPER fire extinguisher..........

Sit in car, say my prayers TWICE pray.gif pray.gif and flip the fuel pump switch, flip the ignition switch and turn her over ........

WISH ME LUCK!!!!! cheer.gif and for GODS sake if I am forgetting anything let me know!!!!!!!!!

And of course if she runs as well as I hope she does I will most likley spin her around the block!!! driving.gif

WoW!!! no motor no seats on Saturday to this!!!!

rock on!!!

Posted by: degreeoff Mar 5 2008, 04:39 PM

Well no joy.....spent 3 hours looking for a damn tube for the breather, then 2 hours diagnosing issues with my 'one size fits all' wiring harness. Then oil pressure with no plugs in was not reading after 9 qts added, then fuel pump was putting out 8 PSI and gas leaked from one barrel and down the throat of another....turned the regulator down to 3.5 easy still need to pop the carbs off and check them again....BUT all this on another day!! I am outta town for a 10 day VACA....until next time.......PEACE!! BTW should oil pressure read spinning fast like that w/o plugs? Never could get the idiot light to work....hmmmm

can I ask what brand paint and the color of your primer?

Yes!
Mine rumbled to life again a week ago Sunday.
Feels good, don't it. beer.gif

Posted by: degreeoff Mar 17 2008, 05:44 PM

The color is POR137....and the primer is just grey all by Dupont (chroma base/ Nason clear. The only problem I am now having is my fuel pressure was dropping and I dont know why?? But I will figure it out. The pump is mounted high so I think it may be that but who knows? It could also be a fuel pickup problem as I had to dump 5 gallons in it to get it to start to draw.....BUT all in all it is looking good and I was able to put the car in all gears today and roll forward and back under power!!!!

Posted by: Twise Mar 17 2008, 06:00 PM

AWESOME MAN!!!!!!!! Simply LLOOOVVVVEEE the color. Attention to detail is what its all about. wouldn't change much on a dream build!

hope someday I got the funds to make that happen

Posted by: degreeoff Mar 18 2008, 01:09 PM

Well now I gone an broke the law today with a quick drive down the block! aside from the tears all be it joy , surprise or the fact that there is no windshield....the world may never know! I'll say this once it gets on cam...... pray.gif Now I have a few MORE issues....

seems to run pretty good although my fuel pressure is wacky after relocating the pump, so it may be a bad regulator or gauge??

also there seems a bit more popping through the carbs than I would like.....

also the first second reverse gears are way STIFF.....I had to make the rod so I think I may have screwed it up a bit as the bushings are all good...?

BUT on the flip side there are very minor weeps in the way of oil and no PUDDLES!!!!!

YOU TOO CAN REBUILD A 9elben engine.....

Josh

Posted by: degreeoff Mar 26 2008, 05:44 PM

Its all good Herb, they forklifted it onto the car hauler trailer and I had em set it on the 4 1000lb ($9.99 each) mini dollies (which I will use for my alignments) and I basicly rolled it off the trailer and onto a jack and off a jack and on a jack until it was far enough off the trailer to use the built in doohickiemagigy(on the pump) for moving it around the floor (its semi portable that way)

BTW I just weighed my ride today with 1/2 tank and 14qts oil it was 1960 +(-) 20 lbs!!! pretty good with all REAL glass in the car.

Posted by: degreeoff Oct 14 2008, 09:13 PM

Well its been a while folks I realize.

The skinny and FAT! is this @ my last autoX the guru of track planning and TTOD was following me up toi the course for a breif time. Once there he informs me that the car is smoking and blowing blue smoke........well the weekend after this event I was scheduled to truck my ass a car trailer and my girl up to watkins glen for my first DE w/PCA.....so I ask am I going to be black flagged for this. He states that I may and said he'd keep an eye on my throughout the day to see if it got worse.

Well I am now running 245/50 R compond tires on the ride to wear em in a bit and on my first run I hear a healthy CLUNK and finish my pass. After coming to a stop I ask if he saw smoke or not and he said no......it looked good and so I am thinking GREAT! (it should be noted that before the day started I also had another guru of 911 land come up and check out the ride and he looked at my home tune on the crankfire unit and said I was retarded.....:-P way too much and recomended I up the initial a fair bit, car ran like a scat rat first pass BTW)

I also had not been able to get my rickity old (68) carbs to sync and run right (always rich or alway lean and no in between (many many jets later and a carb guru as well!)

Well back to the pit line I go and notice a wierd smell....like burning rubber? I think wtf? as I get in and take it out of gear to roll down the line I notice the car will not roll..........SO having had a simalar issue WAY back when I first did a rough alignment I thought maybe a tire had worked over a bit and started rubbing the fender. SURE NUFF! BAD too so bad I could not do a fix there and hitched a ride back to my house from Matt to get my van and trailer. I remember while doing my alignment at the shop we damn near run out of travel for toe in on the RR and also saw a bit of looseness in the inner ear hole so I am thinking that the arm is moving around in the inner ear hole and no amoount of tightening will fix it.

Well I am fed up! I have had enough and dumped a shitload of time and $$$ into her and was like SCREW this and parked it and spent the summer sailing (I didnt even look at the suspensuion until a week ago)

To summarize:

too much money and time in too short a period of time = unhappiness/fuck it/fatalism

in the meantime I was able to find just the right buyer for my IDS carbs to the tune of $2500 for just the carbs no linkage maniflds K&N etc so I sold em and got on the 3 month wait with PMO. They just came in after a 4 MONTH wait and a 2 week ups tour of the country, and now I just need to get the left side tall manifold that is 37/40 as opposed to the mismatch 37/46! and I should be able to crank her up again and either make the final DE @ Summit the last weekend of the month or do the Sterling suds and buds deal?

Oh did I mention I welded a litle bit of the hole on the ear only to realize that the outer mount had slipped due to SO MUCH FKIN sticky rubber?

Now if I can only rule out my theory of rings and cylinders that glazed over due to too much raw gas injected at first startup after rebuild....(damn crankfire issues) I will be in like flint!!!!

Wish me luck??!! and here is a little eye candy for the most expensive single car part buy of my LIFE!

My advice whether you want it or not.

Use Goetze rings
Use Brad Penn break in oil.
....oh, with new cams you need to have the old rocker arms re-surfaced....or get new ones.

No advice here, just a fact.. The only folks I know of that use Ross pistons are you & Motor Miester.....sorry, but true.

The Guard diff is killer, tho...... but real men install their own. biggrin.gif

My advice whether you want it or not.
Use Goetze rings
Use Brad Penn break in oil.

oops forgot to mention the rockers are on the way from EBS as are the Goetez rings......

My Shop guy...(Micheal Mount, Burtonsville machine shop) has spec'd them out (ross) and has givin a thumbs up..... driving.gif

BUT.......thank you JP for putting doubt in my mind as I now have JE's on the way......9.5:1....no goetz rings now though. JE has a proprietary size that ony comes with that piston set.....??

Sorry.... biggrin.gif

IIRC....and you'd better check this, rings come in thickness & diameter.
The thicknesses are 2,2,3 or 2,2,4 ...the numbers being in millimeters. IIRC, (again)
the Goetze are 2,2, 4. Sixnotfour knows this fer sure. I don't know what rings JE supplies with their pistons.....but I suspect some Deves style.

Oh man, you should not have ordered JE pistons as you cant use Goetze rings with them. Damnit tongue.gif

Posted by: J P Stein Aug 21 2009, 01:48 PM

According to my guru you can order Goetze rings with your JE pistons. In fact he says Goetze rings are a must for Nikasil cyls. In the negative sense, I have a shot set of cyls to prove that.

Posted by: degreeoff Aug 21 2009, 03:08 PM

hey JP the rings are a very odd size (2.8mm oil rings) that can ONLY be used with the JE 90mm.....but they are designed for the Nikasil cylinders as per the website of JE.....

My machinist says he asks for pistons that are within .002" and thats what they send him.....He is also getting the cylinders done per those specs, I should be GTG......

LSD new top end ....this a thing will SCREAM!

Ya Doc, its a bummer but what are you going to do? This is the last $$ I am going to spend for a good while I think....I hope.....or I will sell it!

what kind of scale did you use for car weight that would be +/- 20lbs...?

I still hold the belief that scales set up for accuracy in a completely different weight range (ie: 15,000lb trucks) struggle to be very accurate with light cars outside of their operating range.

Truck stop scales have a +/- 20 lb error margin and is what conforms to federal standards for weighing trucks.

I have found that SCCA solo scales vary +/- 10 lbs. That is no big deal but when you set up, give yourself some room. It's better to be 10-20 lbs overweight per their scales rather than 2 lbs under(DSQ). You are weighed immediately after your last run of each day.

I hold a belief that scales calibrated to measure 10ton are not within their prime opperating range at 2000lbs... (not in their prime accuracy)
I know not everyone agree's with this though

on the wieght bit it was at a landfill.......truck only scales wouldnt even get me I was too light....I am guessing that it was pretty close though as I am striped interior (minus some very light seats and dash as well as all FG with early doors)

You can get your pistons re-grooved to your specs. I agree with JP re: goetze rings. They are OE. I bought Deves rings once. I couldn't believe the amount of force it took to compress the oil scraper ring. I thought somehow I had done something wrong. I brought them to a Porsche engine builder who referred to them as "hone masters". That was 15 years ago. Maybe things have changed in the meantime. Goetze oil rings can be easily compressed with your fingers.

with window glass, heavy yoko's, the -6 lump, the steel front cross member and the banana muffler.... I would of guessed closer to 2150
those early doors with glass come in around 100lbs
and most 6's with actual turn signals and street attire come in around 2200-2300

good job
