914World.com _ 914World Garage _ CV joint failrue mode?

Posted by: Borderline Jun 20 2007, 11:48 AM

On the way home my car developed a little clicking sound going around slow right hand corners. It seems to be coming from the right-rear. I've checked the four bolts holding the CV joint to the axle shaft and they are tight. My question is: how long can I drive it this way and how will the CV joint finally let go? I want to do an AX at Marina in a couple weeks and don't think I can get it done in time.

Also, how do I know which one is bad. Do I have to disassemble them and check for worn parts?

Thanks for any help on this.

I can't answer most of your questions, but I recently disassembled three axles and the inner joints were always in worse shape than the outer ones.

I don't drive my car much, but my left, outer CV has been making a clunking sound for two years now. Still works, however I'm going to need to fix it soon.
