914World.com _ 914World Garage _ The Flare Switch Project

Posted by: RON S. Jun 25 2007, 06:12 AM

Finally finished it up,and put most everything back together.

I gotta order new sail panel vinyl, and new moulding, but that is about it.

I got the flares on the group buy in February? Started the Switch in March, and Finally finished the entire job is June.

For reference,I did all the work myself. No subcontracting of anything.

To add it up for anyone wondering. The flares were $750.00 delivered,About $700.00 in paint supplies, and a good 200 hours in labor.

Now I'm gonna replace some rubber pieces, replace the tail light lenses and such.
I'll probably have a little over 2 grand in it complete.Doing it myself.

It looks sweet!

How much time to do think you would have had into it if you had installed the rear flares without widening them?

Oh, great job!!!! pray.gif

If I hadn't needed to widen the rears,I feel comfortable saying that it could be done at home in the 50-75 hour range.

I'm sure a good and highly skilled bodyman can beat those times, but I took my time, double checked everything over and over.I wasn't gonna hotrod the job and end up with massively warped sheetmetal that would end up requiring a huge amount of filler.

Rims are 18x8 in front, 18x10 in rear.

rears have a 40mm offset and a 2''spacer.

Fronts are a different story.

The fronts were an orphaned rear set of 18x10 hollow spokes off a totaled 993 wide body. They have a 40mm offset.

I did the math, and noticed years ago that if they were narrowed by 2'',that they probably would fit the stock 914/6 hubs without any spacer.

Since they were needing a refinish anyway,I sent them off to Wheels Of America out in Texas to rework them.

They narrowed them 2'',trued them, balanced them, and certified them.
Sure enough, they fit the car with flares like a glove.

I've since added early 930 front brakes,so there is now a 1'' spacer added to push the wheels out even more.
