I often wonder about this.
This was supposed to be a poll, it looks like it didn't work
I wish I could delete so I didn't look so stupid.
Just make a new one.
I am 28. Often reffered to as "the kid who kicked my butt" at some AXs
im 16....soon to be 17....end of story
They will be calling you kid for a long time. Hey, at least you have a 914. I wish I would have got into them earlier. I think I was 24 when I started working on them.
20 here 21 soon
18 here
Oh I feel reeeeeeal old now. Just started my 2nd 1/2 century.
Young enough to still date girls in their twenties. Actually, I just turned 37 - my fiancee is 23. I'm a lucky boy.
Old enough to know what "Made in West Germany" means.
Wasn't there already one of these threads/polls a few months ago?
32.
Zach
43, youngest lookin' grandfather you ever saw
I hate to think about it 52
Twenty three (23) here..........when my 914 was made
46....and nothin' funny to say about it....
my car's only 15 years older than me... i'm 22
32
43 and infected with the 914-Virus over 30 years
sww914
Now that you've started this infernal "survey", ya know that you're expected to post periodic results of the "youngest", "oldest", "average age" and "median age" statistics on the respondents.
I'm so old, my first job was going through the permit process and filing the EIR for dirt. The Cap'n
Ok, here goes. . . 59 years, 5 months, 11 days, 7 hours, 49 minutes, but who's counting?
Got my first 914 when I was 29 in 1977. A '72 with 20K miles.
Thanks,
........older than dirt!
50 and one day. That was to easy
Im 30 and bought my first 914 at the age of 18. Im onto my second one now.
I'm 42, so if there was already a poll about this a few months ago, I've obviously forgotten.
The only thing that I can remember is righty tighty, leftie loosie.
I'm two years older than my car.
38. Too old to do this. Too young not to.
40, soon 41
37... born the same year as my car
27 soon to be 28. I finally bought my 914 after over 10 years of wishing
Now I just have to find more time for
You could call me the last of the Boomers or you could call me Grandpa X. I'm a Baby-Booming X-man . In other words, 44.5 yrs. First time I sat in a Teener I was 11. Same LE I own today.
(53 in July) -My car was new the year I graduated from High School.
40. Took my first ride in my 914 last night. This was also my first ride in a 914 ever. I have been restoring the car for the last 4 years.
37
OK you Youngins your all babies. 69 today 6-26 -07, born in 1938.
When my 73 was born ,i was 34 yrs. young. Oh boy to have had my 914 then.
But my time was taken with starting a bussness and family , i did a pretty good job ,on both, i guess! Dave
happy bday dave...
Happy birthday Dave.
Young enough to drive a race car with a metal seat with no padding, old enough to feel it the next day.
I'll be 21 in 4 days.
That'll be intresting.
I'm old enough to experience what its like to have a 914 that constantly demands time, money and work.
And the worst part is, I have 3 cars now, and two are aircooled
Mabe now you should ditch the Mazda and get a 911. Then you would have three air cooled cars
The mazda is the only one that works lol
I thought about it, but with all of the $$ these cars require i'd have to live in the 911!
Thanks for asking.......
46 and still kicking ass !!
im old enough to join the military and give my life for the country.
but not old enough to drink.
aka 20
steve
So true. I think they should change one age requirement or the other. If you can be a solier you should be able to drink, but then again with as little as they get paid I'm not sure if they can afford to drink
I'm 40. I am finding that some of my childhood experiences are hard to explain to young geeks these days. Like helping my father carry boxes of punch cards into the university he taught at so that he could load a program into the main frame. (Looking back I am suprised he trusted me not to drop them) And although I never became a big video game player, I did play a very early version of moon lander on a mini main frame computer. The computer only took up about half of a room.
48 and feeling like 70.
These frickin cars WILL sap the life out of you....
my mustang is 40
sons 914 is 34
sons honda is 14
wifes taurus is 2
oh crap do you mean me???
I'm 20, my two cars are a combined age of 60 (1978 ford fiesta, 1976 914). And I'm old enough to have pictures of my mom holding me in front of the berlin wall in front of the brandenburg gate.
you'd think with a post count of over 7000 i would have been on board a lot longer than I actually have been.
(its been reset too)
Who else is besides me is BMO- "before microwave ovens"?
C'mon. Nobody remembers when we had the chinese calender? Before the contenents separated? wasn't long ago....
I am 43. I remember as a 6 year old watching the Apollo 11 moon landing.
I also remember the first microwave oven. My aunt and uncle had it. It was an Amana Radarange. I thought it was totally cool. And way over-engineered. They had it up until a few years ago and it still worked.
52
When I went to highschool, I bought a 2 year old 914 from my brother. It cost me $100/month and I paid for it with my earnings from lifeguarding at the local pool.
48...... too old to crawl under the damn thing all the time......too poor to have someone else do it.
you are all babes in the woods.my first car was a 29 model A
74 years young
49, and thanks to Bernie for making me feel young!
I used punch cards for the main frame at college. I still call CDs records (my daughter thinks its funny).
I feel older when crawling under the 914, but much younger when driving it. I guess it balances out.
BernBomb: I was 69 ,yesterday
Let's make these kids feel bad.
1. Whats the first price of a gallon of gas ,you remember?
Me; 29.9 ,I could drive all week to school & work for $ 3.00
1st. car ; 46 Ply. 2door, paid $200.00, 1st yr Ins 250.00
I could eat dinner for a $1.00, Huge berger,fries,and a malt
seem to remember some change back to..
Aunt lived on the farm, 6 party line phone that had a grank on the side
I only wonder what the next 69 yrs will bring
Dave
I'm 45.
And damn sure feel it too.
Ron
18. I just got my first 914, '73 "the nose mobile", and Im going down to get a '72 this week.
I'm 22 and married to a 19 year old. And I have been happely married for almost 4 years
58 today, 59 next week. I got one foot on the brake and one foot on the gas pedal and I still can't get no satisfaction. I do all my own 914 work by myself, including engine swaps (Buick V6), trans axle swaps, engine builds, etc.
"There must be some way outta here, said the Joker to the thief. There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief." BD
I'm 30, so I guess I know a little bit of the new and old stuff.
Grew up playing with toys that didn't play by themselves (like toys today did), no cable TV, having to get up to change the channel, remember me and my brother getting LPs for the cool cover art (Kiss Alive anyone?), microwaves actually looked like radiation machines and sat on their own 'cart' in the kitchen, no internet, and the atari and apple II were the hot items.
I've been 21 three times now. First car was a 55' Ford with "three on the tree" and set me back $350. Gas was 19.9 cents a gallon for Sunoco 190. How many of you old teeners remember the "dial the octane" knob at Sunoco? I can still crawl under a 914 (ask Dan) but can't jump back up like I used to. First Porsche was a 70' 914/4 that I bought from Stoddards of Ohio and now 44 Porsches later.........
Ken...
I am celebrating my 9th anniversary of age 30.
I'm towing the middle of the road at 36. My wife is the same age as my car.
29 .....when my '73 was built !!!!
3 years older than my car. I was the same age as my first '76 914.
I am a bicentennial baby and named after Benjamin Franklin...
Crap, I just realized I'm 62!!! How'd that happen? I remember gas price wars dropping the cost of a gallon to 14.9 cents. $1 in the tank and cruise all night with my buddies. First car was a 48 Plymouth, second a 51 Chevy 2-door hardtop (worth more today than I paid for my first house). Then I bought a 59 TR3 (turned turtle on me while driving it to work one morning-damn that hurt!), followed by a TR4. First air-cooled car, a 62 VW. Then a VW camper van. Took that one with us to Alaska in 78. Damn near froze to death in it.
Saw my first 914 in 1972 when my sister's boy friend brought her home from a date. Love at first sight. I thought it was the coolest car I'd ever seen. Always wanted one, and finally bought my first 914-73 1.7-in 1990. Still got it, but its now the parts car. Bought my second one, a 73 2.0 in 1992. Daily driver. Still do all my own work on it, but I'm getting tired of laying on the concrete floor.
More than twice the age of my 1974 914 type 47, not quite twice the age
of my 1970 914-6 type 914, owned since 1970. D imitri
59. Bought mine new in '76 and could never part with it.
Turn 35 in August! My twin daughters just turned 12. I really didn't feel old before that
I'm old enough to know better, but young enough to do it anyway.
I'm old enough to have been participating in PCA DE events for 20 years, but young enough to have children that are 1 and 3.
By the way, I'm not yet 40.
at the ripe old age of 37 I am old enough to know better than to fool around with porsches... but still to young to care since I own 3.
I have to admit I am strongly considering dumping them all for a z06 corvette that will do everything I want but I guess a 3.6 911 , a v8 914 and who knows what I will do with that sc is much mor fun.
I guess anyone can just buy a finished product but it takes an aged gear head to build thier own and walk their own path or is the brain starting to go
I am 38. I own a 911 and my 914, and I don't have time for either of them thanks to my two daughters who are 5 and 1. There are also the house projects and all the other crap that comes with this age.
I believe that the ideal age to own a 914 is 22 to 28 (when most people have plenty of time and a little money) or 45 to ? (when most people have a little time and plenty of money). If you get married and have kids, let's face it, the cars take a backseat, and they should. Kids are more important than cars. Yes, I am kicking myself for saying that, but it is true. My true legacy on this Earth won't be the car(s) that I restore, but the people that I raise.
Ken
I'm 47 and have 2 kids (7 and 11)....Who said I had plenty of money???
Kids are away at summer camp this week so I feel like I'm 25 all over again!
I remember when "White Rose" "BP" and "Supertest" were all popular gas stations up in Canada...and the attendant washed your windshield as well as checked your oil...
16 here
41 and still plays with cars & bikes But, I'll turn 42 in a month

The 914 that I was taken home from the hospital after I was born was 12 years old at the time...That was 1986. I bought my first 914 sight unseen when I was 17, after saving up for 3 years, and drove it from Oakland CA to Dallas TX in the middle of the summer. Now I am 21 working on my third rebuild.
Made it to 55 so far. My first 914 was a 74 2.0 liter bought when I was in Grad School (yeah, I also was very used to punch cards and Fortran IV programming).
I also remember going to see LeMans on the night it came out at a DriveIn, and Grand Prix in Cinerama!
I agree with many of you that now things are more hectic with all the time saving devices we have to deal with. It's great to go to the garage and play with cars that have carbs, and can be easily serviced.
Unfortunately, the same trouble with it being very easy to get under the car, but a SOB to get back up. Luckily, my 21 year old son is a willing tool passer, and is learning about cars the old fashioned way, rebuilding them!
48 and still feel like 20 look more like early 30s. I refuse to age.
God bless genetics...Thanks Dad!
47 years young but still feel 25 or so!!
57 today
So I went for a drive in the 74 teener I recently fixed up for my daughter....
Im 12.
i was young when this thread was started...
I guess I will join all these "aged tales". I am 17, or was tha???? What childhood????
Ok! I am up there with Bernbomb and Barber Dave. I am 70 and will become younger in a couple of months.
I have had two 914s which were recovered from the "Junk Yard". Sorry, it should be caled the Salvage Yard, Wrecking Yard, Parts Supply Yard, "Moon Nite Auto Supply", etc. Still fighting the sickness and battle with great enjoyment and apprehension.
I have seen and been involved in anything and everything from war, high technology, areospace projects, banking and whatnot during my young years. I have retired from the Military after 29 plus years of active and reserve duty, retired banker and financial activities, involved in the Gemini Program, and whatnot.
Where did the time go??????
After all the above, I need a rest. Good Nite, Bernbomb and Barber Dave; good nite all.
Steve
Well, I'm 29, for the 18th time (47) and teach at a small college. The other day, a group of rice rocket guys were standing around my 914 wondering what it was.
I think there are a few new 914 fans here so maybe there will be more than 3 or 4 in the whole county someday
Sean
Well, I guess I am not the oldest at 68. A young 68 however, I'm off to my first AX tomorrow. My goal is not to spin out or hit any cones. Don't much care what the time is as long as I improve it with each run. Wish me luck.
72, still driving and enjoying my 914 regularly (hasn't been on stands for 11 years).
Old enough that this is one of my childhood toys. . . read the bottom. . .

150 Dude, and still young!
just turned the big 5-0.
I am 56, my first car was 1964 356sc convertable I payed $300 for! : the owner said the engine was seized and the clutch cable was broken, I found the clip had come out of the clutch cable and pulled the plugs, put MM oil in the cylinders, rotated the crank with a wrench until free, then with the starter. Reinstalled the plugs and started it up, my brother drove around the block(he had a license). The next porsche in 76 was a 1970 914-6 40k miles, paid $4000 for it.
Landed a jet, and a 3000hp airplane on a carrier while I was in the Navy.
Have owned about 30 914's, currently own 8, it is a disease.
Raced 914's at a circle track in Maine, eventually was the fastest car in the 4 cylinder class.
Have tried to live by two things - (1) God is my master, I live by his rules (2) Getting old is not for SISSIES
I'm 66, closing in on Shoguneagle. I still own a Teac A1500 reel to reel, Pioneer SX-990, and a Konica AutoReflex T - all from the 1970 Pacex catalog which 'eagle might recall.
Bought my 70 1.7 in 1977, daily driver for many years (and only had one breakdown in all that time). Currently almost completely dissasembled, getting ready to go to the paint shop. Mostly original including the passenger side foot rest, I am missing the rear valence.
.......Im the same age as THIN AIR
(thank god I feel good!!)
Physically, I'm about chronologically right. (51)
Mentally is a difrint story...
Just turned 61
Enjoyed drooling over 914's in college. Couldn't afford one then adn they aren't making them any more. This one is a white '70 -6 conversion. The ebay ad was not well represented but it'll turn out all right, just more expense and work than expected. Photo is coming home from the paint shop. AR wheels gotta go. They'll be on ebay some time soon. Hopefully in 6 months I'll have some photos on the Fuchs 5 spokes.
I'm turning 33 had my car since 98 only drove it for 3 months has now had $25000 invest into it and still not done.
Last year I celebrated my 21st birthday for the third time. When I was 20, I could drive my Super Roadster about 50 miles from college and back for a buck worth of 33.9 cent high test. But in slaloms, it got less than 1 mpg.
Today is birthday #61. I spent the day at Red Rocks Classic. A pretty good birthday!

Just turned 28 a week ago.
Currently 58, but grew up with all my older brothers' friends (68 and 66). I remember gas being 19 cents/gallon (for my go-karts and Taco and Bonanza minibikes).
Grew up with B/W TVs, AM radios, tube amplifiers, idler-wheel turntables, 45s, LPs, R-R tape decks, Honda Mini Trails, Dewey Weber 9'6" long boards, pong ...
Bought my first 914 (a '71) in 1973. Not very practical (my mom's words) so I didn't have it long
Bought my first 911 (a first year '64) in 1977 (still have it)
Bought and sold more 911s & 912s in the 80's (still have a few)
My wife bought me a '75 914 in 2006 ... I bought her a '71 in 2007
Also picked up a 5-lugged '72 that I planned to race ... age and playing too hard in my younger years finally caught up with me, so it sits under a cover ...
I still think young ... I think
According to Erc Shea I am 50.
Hi all.....hitting 66 28th of this month. It won't be as bad as it was hitting a truck head on in my bug in'96. Broke both legs, broke my femur in three places, and fractured my neck. They put me back together with rods and pins, [b]Gorilla Glue wasn't around then. Got my first 14 in '96 also.....didn't get to enjoy it much. The car I love to hate the most! But now, working on it is just kicking my ass!! Well, you gotta go big, or stay home!
Ron S.
Amazing metamorphasis! , this gives me hope to bring another project out of the boneyard.
Not too shabby
Marty
Check the date on the Eine Mark, fast forward to the next conflict which to this day has a DMZ at the 38th parallel.
That's when I showed up !
The year I was born:
Average Cost of new house $10.250.00
Cost of a gallon of Gas 22 cents
Average Cost of a new car $1,700.00
Average Monthly Rent $85.00
Movie Ticket 70 cents
Life Magazine 20 cents
the year was '54, and I am now '57.
Of course at age 0 to 2 I was too busy messing myself, and chasing tit to remember any of that. What I do remember were gas wars and the local gas stations (at least 2 per corner) where the gas went down 5 to 7 cents a gallon to say 26 cents and you still got full service (air tires, wash all windows, check oil, and water and either get free drinking glasses or trading stamps). Cars didn't have seat belts, and wearing the rubber wheels off my red firetruck peddal car. Also the first man into space, the Kennedy assasination, prop airliners ( and the first jet liners) first man on the moon, and doing my damnest to avoid going into the hell call Vietnam, again while chasing tit and getting messed up.
Nice to see I have a lot of company in the 50, 60, 70 year old contingent. Of cours considering the cars are about 40 years old, it just figures.
Have owned a 72, 911T targa (hence my love for open top driving) and currently own a 73 911 and my favorite summer day hot rod, the 71 914.
Nice car, Rick
If I didn't have enough 914s already ... I'd hold out for a nice silver one.
Hmmm. We are all now 5 years older than when this thread was started.
[quote name='RickS' date='Sep 10 2012, 01:35 AM' post='1736850']

There's been a change??
Olin
(Nice 'teener)
I am 46.
mostly kids! that explains alot
Born in 1964 Renton Washington ...Old enough to know a fool and he`s money will soon part
38
I recall crowding around our 19" black and white TV (complete with rabbit ears) to watch Neil Armstrong step onto the moon and the birth of the 914 around the same time. Can't say as a kid I ever imagined owning a 914 at age 48!
I wonder what my kids will be driving will be driving in their late 40's - likely won't be gas powered!
57 as of today.

Old & getting older.
Remember watching Sky King on Saturday mornings, Cisco Kid on Sundays, Friday night fights with my Dad, my Fanner 50 & Buntline Special. Oh, and there were the daily vendors in the neighborhood selling bakery items, fresh meat, milk in a glass bottle with a cardboard cap, the fresh veggie van, the egg man. There were also the occasional Fuller Brush and Electrolux door-to-door salesmen. Worst of all was the Daisy pump BB gun (big mistake on my Dad's part).
On summer days I didn't go to day camp. My mother kicked me out of the house after breakfast. Played baseball & cowboys & indians all day, as well as bike trips.
Wouldn't trade a day of it! I'm 65 & still have the best toy I ever got - my 72 914, which I bought in August '72.
Just turned 46
OK remember these came in Sugar Pops. FREE. they had a submarine and this frogman. . add baking soda in the base and put it in a glass of water and watch it rise and dive. . or remember the best Sat morning show. .

The older I get, the older old gets. My body may be 46, but I refuse to act it.
Ok, it was funny when the first person said they were 12. But that joke is old and this thread only means anything if people get real. If we could filter out all that (how is it funny any more?), this is actually interesting.
I rolled some dice. I figure Jamie is 30something (it's ok to be very late), Troy is 45, SirAndy is 46, Gint is 57,
Z. is 5ff-6sss-errrrr-bunnypoint55.
Roger loves Z.
But Roger has been aging and therefor absent.
Miles is miles from here.
Is that a rutabaga?
I will be 47 in 3 days....
Had Lincoln Logs and later an jumbo Erector set, but what got me in trouble was a Gilbert chemistry set. Tortured my little brother's GI Joes something awful.
Won as a door-prize at the Soapbox Derby awards dinner in 1966, this was my favorite childhood toy: a Monza Jr.
Mine came with a Tecumseh 3 1/2hp motor, but within a year I'd blown it up (a couple of times!) with self-mixed mystery fuel.
Not long after that I spent my busboy savings on a McCulloch 91 and Carlisle slicks. Our neighbors hated me.
