Damn, that was one MESSY engine compartment. My favorite are the two little horizontal "eyebrows" of corrosion above the two sets of battery caps. Turns out the voltage regulator was cranking over 14 and cooking the acid. Here's the "after picture" again.

OK. The pics are scary big and I have a big monitor so I don't mind but on a laptop it might be bad. So I'll end my experiment by posting a smaller version of the same "before" pic.
