just a friendly reminder to update your VIN info.
go here:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=membervins
you can add as many cars as you like. please only add cars you currently own or that you parted out (mark those as "dead") ...
also, try to get as much info as possible, including:
- VIN
- paintcode (badge on drivers side front door jamb)
- build-date (sticker on drivers side rear door jamb)
- chassis number (badge on drivers side front door jamb and stamped into rear trunk floor)
- engine number
and lastly, if you have records of cars that you have come across in junkyards, backyards or even on ebay, please send that info to *me* in a PM.
i'll add those to the database manually so they don't have any owner assigned to them.
Andy
I just updated mine, deleted the Chalon and added the new one. I wanted to add the 72 parts car but it's fate is still undecided and I cannot get to the drivers side to open the door to get the numbers. I will update it once I move the car.
I'm really behind on this... I need to compile past and current cars tonight.
Ferg
I updated mine too, it's only a shame that each time you want to update for example the colour or the comment, you have to start all over.
I assume that this would allow a correction to the VIN as well?
If so, we can encourage some changes to the invalid VIN's we find.
I unfortunatly missed on two of the cars I sent to the bone yard, but I have two others I wil add tomorrow. My running 914s are registered already.
Jon
Thanks Scott and Toast.......
i wish id keep the vin on a parted 914. i know the year so i put in the first part, not that that helps
thanks for the sites upkeep efforts
mike
Just added a dead one and will ad my new race car as soon as it sits in my garage.
Just rememberd the flared car in the garage.
keep 'em coming guys ...
Andy
All these thread bumps finally motivated me to get the chassis numbers from both cars. I was surprised that the 1970 chassis number was 132xxx, so much lower than the 1974 was 832xxxx. Do we have production ranges of chassis numbers by year? I looked around the info pages, but might have missed them...
Steve, the body/chassis 3 for the 914/6 is completely different than the 914/4. The 914/6 always has a 13 prefix, followed by a 1 for 1971 and 2 for 1972, then 4 digits for the sequence #. No 0 was used for the 1970 MY for some reason, but the dash which has a similar code number did have the 0 for the 1970 MY. The last 4 digits (the sequence #) should be somewhat close to the last 4 digits of your VIN.
The 914/4 OTOH, has the form xxy9zzz where xx is the week of the year ( 1 or 01 to 52, y is the day of the week (1 to 5) and zzz is the daily sequence # (starts at 501 from beginning in 1969 to about week 40 in 1974, then changes to 001).
Andy (correction required for your first post)
At the time that the chassis number changed from base 9500 to base 9000 the number was no longer stamped into the rear trunk floor, but was instead stamped into a tag that was riveted to the support under the right headlight bucket.
When entering data, please copy the info exactly as you find it on the car. There are known errors in the data plates such as the wrong VIN punched into the safety compliance decal, the wrong Karmann badge attached to the body, the wrong paint code or errors in the body number, even the VIN stamped into the right front fender can be totally different, particularly if it is a replacement body from the factory. If the numbers do not match then either someone has fudged the cars history, the factory goofed, or you may have something that needs some investigation.

Andy,
I just completed the information for both of my cars. Any chance to put up a chassis number page so we know who owns the next chassis off the line?
Lots of cool info about the body numbers, thanks. I had worried that my 1970 chassis number was spurious because it was so different from my '74 and the VIN plate is missing. But now it looks like my 74's chassis number is the oddball. Taken from the Karmann plate it's 8329612, which doesn't quite compute. I doubt they had a week 83, or if it was week 32 I doubt they had a day 8 of the week. Unless they really liked the Beatles or something...
I'll have to check the rear trunk stamp, since the build date is 8/73...
Thanks to everyone that has contributed to the VIN database.
I now have over 300 body numbers to work with, but sure could use more.
Here's one I looked at today....not sure if I'm going to aquire it or not yet, but I took down the info:
472291621
939544
L96D
05/72
It's got a early back pad/seat, with a tail shifter, but has the dash vents
Check out 4712903048
I just added it because I realized I still have my 1976 registration 31 years later. I assume the car is dead. If not, a future 914world'er can dispute my info. I'd love to know it was still on the road!
Paul
Ever so slo-o-o-wly the info and colors are being filled in. If you're a newbie and haven't done so, add your cars' VIN and color to the list.
If you're 914 veteran and have never gotten around to adding your 914 to the list of members' cars, now's a good time as any. Please, or do we have to
footnote, I've just started searching junk yards/salvage lots here in Cincinnati for "lost" 914s and and haven't found a single one as yet
Bruce, you are missing one digit in that VIN and another in the body #:
472291621x
x939544
I'm very sure it is 1939544
I do greatly appreciate your assistance.
4722916921
It could be a 1 on the Karman tag.....the car was originaly silver and painted blue which is painted over the tag too.........
I'm going to look at it again in a bit and if it goes thru the auction at the right price, I'll buy it and know for sure.
Thanks Bruce, with VIN 4722916921 and date code 05/72 it pretty much has to be 1939544.
I'll let you know for sure when it get's to it's new home
Mines updated.
Come on 'teeners! Update, update, update!
On a personal note, I'm curious to the color and VIN of any survivors around my own #4702903114.
Paul
Finally updated my VIN record. This is an interesting list! Thanks!
Newbies and new acquistions, add your VINs and color code and Chassis #s to the members' listing. Our moderators and historians thank you

Those of us who care and track these things thank you
Added one runner and I'll see about adding 2 dead ones when I find the papper.

VIN 4722900382
Thanks to all who've added or updated.
Newbies or occasional lurkers, please add your cars' VIN and color if you've not done so. The moderators, administrators, historians, archivists, and curious among us like to see the 914 info page filling up with serial numbers and color codes.
Much thanks to all who have helped.
Also, how do you know if a '74 is an LE? I know of a 3/74 L80E car that could be right?
VIN is 4742915585
8/73. #4742900423. #3339622. L96D. it's near the end. hammer mill time is coming.

I see some new names appearing on the Forum.....
Please take a few minutes and add your VIN and color code for your car so they can be added to our members' listing. Just click on the "914 Info" at the very top of the Forum page and add your car's #s. All of us thank you for your input.
Added my 74, VIN 4742906858, chassis 4359585, date code 10-73, color L65K Ravenna Green
Updated my 71, VIN 4712903105, chassis 4029573. Now red, originally yellow. Can't get the date code and color code as car is stuffed in the corner of the garage awaiting a transplant 1.8L and newer clutch.
Spoke
added a new feature:
- you can now add a url to a hosted image of your car!
Andy
PS: easiest way to do that, post a picture of your car in your blog or in a thread, then copy the url of the image into the "Picture Link" box on the page where you edit your VIN info ...
PPS: example profile with picture:

very cool
Thread is back.
Thanks to all who've updated and will soon do so. Those of us who appreciate this input and value it to record both the survivors and the "deceased' 914 #s "thank you." Don't foget to include the color code as well.
If you've just joined our 914 family, welcome, and go to the top of the Forum page and click on the "914 Info" to add your 914s' VIN and color code.
Paul
Just another friendly reminder. The information is useful for many purposes.
Please check the color code on the Karmann badge for accuracy. If you find any discrepancies, be sure to alert me. The body # on the Karmann badge is also very important. Right now we are trying to determine when the black tag with the body number first appeared in the front trunk, and also when the body number changed from xxy95zz to xxy90zz. to help out see this thread:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=76497
time for yet another
Knowing how many of these cars have survived is very useful.
hey i have 2 different vin numbers, one up front and one on the widow/door jam. does that mean i have a salvaged car?
anyway, i'm updating the rest of my stuff now.
Well I'm guessing it was two separate cars at one time.
Look carefully to see where it was stitched together. What is the VIN on the ownership? When you say the number up front, is that the number stamped into the right fender, or the number on the VW badge on the headlight bucket? What VIN's do you find?
Get the data from the Karmann badge and compare the body number on the badge to the number in the trunk floor. Compare the paint code to the color of the car. It could be just the fender was replaced.
for the new members
This, yet ANOTHER reminder to ple-e-e-ease keep your VINs current. If you're new to this site, added a parts car, a roller, or just cut a 914 up, add/change the info which can be accessed by going to the 914 Info site at the top, right side of the forum page.
Also appreciated is if you can provide the chassis # (from the Karmann plate by the driver's door hinge post) and the color code (also on the same plate). I'm seeing an increased number of colors showing up in the register, this is good. We need to continue to account for as many cars/chassis #s/colors as we possibly can.
Thanks again to all.
due to very limited time I didn't re-read this thread yet, but I've got a general question to the 914World Member VIN Numbers
wouldn't it be a benefit to add an additional info to the list?
I'm thinking of a second colour info => "original colour" and "actual colour"
from what I saw within the last couple of years, lots of teeners are painted in a non-original colour
just an idea ...
Gustl
The main part of the list is to record original information.
The current colour block is for actual or current colour.
New members, please add your car and as much information as possible. Add engine and transmission numbers in the comments field.
It has been a few months since the last bump, so for all the new members we invite you to update your member profile with as much data on your 914's as possible.
For the older members, a reminder to ensure your info is up to date and as complete as possible.
Sincere thanks from the Vin Admin team
After 15 years of ownership and 12 years of storage, I finally decided to get the car out and restore it.
VIN# 4732922331
A and a question...
How do I add a VIN for a car that is not mine? Whenever I see a 914 for sale, I get the VIN...
Andy, finally updated. Included some links as well. If you need anymore info, don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks for all the hard work.
Tod
I added 22 to the dead pool the other day. We were at Oklahoma Foreign last Friday so Betty and I retrieved all the VIN numbers off their 914 carcasses. I could not get one. The windshield frame was gone, the vin tag in the door was gone, and the RF fender number had been bondoed over.
#5410 and counting ...
Andy
I added a 70 1.7 that was cut up about a year ago. Finally came across the VIN tag in the rollaway
You can now add a engine number to your VIN profile.
I have yet to come up with a clever way to query that data, but at least now we can start collecting it ...
Andy
Woohoo!
Hmmmmmm, put the engines in a different DB table so people can add as many as they want as well as input 'modifications' to the motor. Then through the VIN pages they can link one of their listed motors to the chassis it's installed in.
I like the way the VIN data is sorted/searchable now.
Original configuration for motor is only going to be populated by 10-15 people. The chassis number, VIN, etc doesn't change (for most people) but the motor is consistently changed.
I like that. It would be neat if you could also add links to threads (i.e. build thread).
But this doesn't really address the issue of people being able to enter a large number of engine serials. It would be nice if I could enter the 10-12 engine numbers I have sitting around, so if I have someone's original engine case, they can find me.
