How much lateral play, if any, should there be in the tranny shift rod after it exits to the rear of the firewall on a '74 2.0L? I can move mine about an inch side to side and it seems somewhat loose. Bushing problem??
Way too much! I would bet your firewall bushing is no longer there, if I read correctly. Order a new bushing.
Yep-
iffin you pull that rubber bellows thing off you will find a pin that is suppossed to have a bushing sleeved around it. Yours is probably in pieces inside the boot- like mine was- and it does no good for the transaxle shifting without it.
