Okay, by 1976 model year all bodies had the new type body number with the form xxy90zz or xxy91zz if zz went over 100. This was seen on the Karmann badge on the drivers door hinge post. There was also a black tag riveted in the front trunk.
An unusual # has been spotted at about VIN # 4762901400, so I ask every member with a 1976 model, and in particular those within +/- 300 of this VIN.
You can reply to this post, email me or PM me. If the number you have is not like the form I show above, please document with photos of both data plates, and include the VIN.
Please update your profile also. Thanks for your assistance.
I have a 76, couldn't find a badge in the front trunk. Do you know where it was specifically located?

The tag in the front trunk should be like this. It appears to be on the right side support under the headlight bucket where it meets the wheelwell. Normally it would be black, this looks oversprayed during a repaint.

currently there's one on eBay (#http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200136744851), so you might ask the seller

Here are the numbers for my car. Forgive some of the picture quality. My garage is rather small. Europeans haven't figured out that cars are supposed to fit in them. If you need any more pics let me know. A funny thing I noticed. The door plate and the trunk plate don't seem to match. Should they?

OH YES!!!!
Looks like for a couple of days the Karmann badge was stamped incorrectly!
Why the 9 was replaced by a 0 I have no idea. It was the only constant during 914/4 production.
Interestingly, this car is back in Germany, and the eBay car was won by a Spaniard.
Dan Root adds this one:

4159019 trunk
4150019 door
MMmmmmmm........Beer. It must have been after lunch.
