914World.com _ 914World Garage _ What would you do? I just got offered $25K for my car

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 6 2007, 03:05 PM

So I had my new friend over. The one that deals in Porsche stuff, and cars all around. He sees my car in its current state (needing to be tuned, probebly new tires because these have been on it for 2 years parked, some minor body touch up, completely rust free with a rebuilt 2.7) and askes if I wanted to sell it. I was like, "now way, thats my child!" A little later we are heading over to one of his many parts hoards and I ask, "what would my car get out this way as it is?" He asked what I wanted and I said I dont want anything, I was just curious. Well I say jokingly, $50K and we both are like, Ya, a bit high." He then goes, How about $20K?" I am like,"Hmmm?" "How about $25K?" he asks. Wholy shit! Thats more scratch than I thought. He is serious and says he has a buyer lined up and that he will get more than that for it so he makes money on the deal and I make bank on it too. What should I do? Can I get another 914 in as goo a shape and have money to burn? What would you do?

blink.gif Wow!

for $25,000, I might be adopting a new child...

I'm actually kind of glad that's your problem and not mine. That's a beautiful car.

Then again; you built it... you can build another. Or can you? Do you have that kind of time anymore?

Posted by: Steve Thacker Aug 6 2007, 03:18 PM

Sing along with me Dr Evil....

Go On... take the money and run ! WHOO WHOO WHOO !!!

Posted by: John Aug 6 2007, 03:20 PM

Tough call, but I would say 'later to mine for that. and my 3.2 runs good.

I would build another.

It's your deal. You will have to do what you think is right.

All my possessions I have are for sale if the right price comes along.

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 6 2007, 03:23 PM

I definitely do not have enough time to build another, I would like to get one that is running and needs nothing. I dont even have time to finish mine and it is soo close. What a bitter sweet issue to have sad.gif That car is rust free and has much of by soul/blood/sweat/swear words invested in it. Keep the opinions coming as I need consult.

how attached are u to the car and how bad do you need the money. Ya it is nice and rust free but 25K is a lot of coin. That being said, unless I needed the money I would not sell it.

Is your heart and soul worth $3,500 dollars? I say wait until you're a doctor, then you can afford whatever you like and you'll still have the car that you built with your own two hands. Just my $.02

P.S. Beautiful car, dude.

Oh, he is for real. This is what he does. He joked with me that he has a lot of his friend mad at him because he goes to their house and a few hours later he has bought their pride and joy and already has a buyer for it from him.

Posted by: sendjonathanmail Aug 6 2007, 03:49 PM

...and $25k would buy a "done" car at one (or more) of this sites sponsors.

Heck, you might even be able to buy yours back for the same price fter he "finishes" the work on it (now that's Evil happy11.gif )

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 6 2007, 04:08 PM

Noel is the perfect chick. Her response, "WHY??? Why would he offer to buy it in the first place? Why are you tempted??? I know you hate the thing right now, but it is YOUR 914! I don't know what I think. Rather perplexed actually. "

Thats why I am marrying her wub.gif Its not about the cash. I dont want ot feel like a dusch if I say no, but it is my bastard child. I am 70:30 against, no 60:40...61:39?

I'm probably biased as I haven't yet done all the work (or written the checks), but I wouldn't want to let it go. Unless you're as good as scotty here thinks -- in that case sure, work your magic and leave 'em crying. laugh.gif

Posted by: John Aug 6 2007, 04:22 PM

It's all part of building cars.

At some point you must let it go to make room for (or fund) another project. Or get a bigger garage....

I realize you have no spare time now and probably won't after you really become a doctor. Besides, will you really want to get your hands dirty after you do become Dr. and can afford a GT3 (or whatever the cool new one is)?

I still say that if it were mine, right now, I would trade for cash. I have other toys and rust free unit bodies in my shop right now....

Theres no doubt its a nice car, but I have seen some very nice 6 conversions

going for less. Maybe find a real one.

Sell it in a heartbeat and start again.

Posted by: JRust Aug 6 2007, 04:47 PM

Heck Evil I'm sure you'll clear that with your shirts happy11.gif . Seriously though I would sell it. That is a very good price. Your car is beautiful & you have done well with it. You can get another solid car no problem & one with a 3.2 or 3.6. If you don't have time to work on it buy a newer Boxster wtih the dough. Still it comes down to how attatched you are to your car. I sold my 73 2.0 I had restored 5 years ago. Had some rough finances & had to do it. It was fine as I knew I could do another one & do it better having learned from my first. Still felt like I got kicked in the nuts when they drove it off though sad.gif

A number of years ago I purchased a Honda motorcycle that I had lusted over for some time. I found one that needed work and took the time to fix it all up just the way I wanted and rode it for a number of years.

Then I finished law school. I was spending the summer studying for the bar exam and I knew it wouldn't get ridden that summer. We were also looking at buying a house. Even though I didn't need the money, I decided to sell the bike and told myself I could and would buy another. I got a really good price for it.

I bawled like a baby when the new owner rode away on it.

If you don't need the money and you really love the car; I would keep it.

This answer, I like! Why hurry? He does do this often so it will only be worth more when I am done should I want to sell it. Moving back to 70:30 against. My heart is breaking a little, still. sad.gif

As for real /6, I really could care less then nothing at all. i want a car that I can do what I want with and a REAL /6 would not be a platform that I would enjoy fooling with. I would rather convert a /4 again. Or do a Suby conversion.

Evil, have you seen Elliots car? Sell it and build yourself another kicka$$ car with a 3.0+ or one already done with all the goodies, you should still have money left over...or do a color change and have none left over. And while your in there...

Sure it is. Just whether it is enough cash. If he pulled out $50,000, the title of this thread would read "I just sold my 914."

How much do you think you could get for the car if you tried to sell it on the open market? His offer seems about double what a converted 2.7 would get, tough not to jump on that, assuming he is serious.

Posted by: messix Aug 6 2007, 05:28 PM

sell? before you had the chance to enjoy the fruits of your labor... are you 'f'ing nuts!!!!!

finish as you can and enjoy it, then after you have had it done and driving then decide if you can live with out it or want/can build another one.

Posted by: Rleog Aug 6 2007, 05:33 PM

Keep it

Keep it

Keep it!

Decide a year after you've completed your residency. If you want to work on another one, by then you'll be able to buy it and still keep your original.

I think you should listen to Noel.

Posted by: 914nerd Aug 6 2007, 05:40 PM

I would have to agree
If you don't need to sell, then hold on to it and get the chance to really drive it for a while
Besides, a well-sorted 914 will always sell (especially one like that)

Posted by: Rand Aug 6 2007, 05:41 PM

Tough choice Mike.

I think I could build a pretty nice 3.6 for that price. And I love the project phase. So I would sell.

But if I didn't have the time or interest in building it myself, I would not sell for that price. What would a reputable shop charge to build *your* car?

Damn these gray areas! The only easy way I see to force this to black & white is setting the price higher.

At what price would you just sell without hesitation? If he comes up with that, then run smiling to the bank. Otherwise enjoy your car!!

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 6 2007, 05:48 PM

I have no where near $25K into this car (I have friends, made deals, and farmed work out to Mexico). I also know that it is a very VERY nice price for my car. That is what sucks. I will likely wait. I didnt want to sell it, the only thing that is making me consider it is that I need money (starving student getting married) and I could possibly get another good 914 that is running ang needs next to nothing and still have money left over. As for after med school, I dont want a new Porsche. I want to wrench. I am working medicine so I can afford a bigger garage, a lift, extra space for friends cars and a refrigerator full of beer in the large garage. Did I mention large garage!

After reading this thread, I don't think we're gonna help you at all. Still, I would agree that if your buddy does this all the time, there'll most likely be a buyer somewhere in the future as well. This may not be as urgent a decision as you think. Just two more cents.

Well, this is the grown up boring answer.

Sell it, buy another on in good shape that does not need work for $6K, and put the rest of the money in the bank for books or classes (or your wedding or honeymoon) or the down payment on a house...

10 years from now you will be a full fledged doctor, and should have the money to flat out just buy your car back (or another built to the same or better specs.)

If it were me, I'd see if the guy was willing to put his money where his mouth is. If he is, you will have made bank for your car. If not, you can walk away.

Well, I just got off the phone with my woman, who is working her second job for the day, and she still feels I should keep it. I have decided that I would rather scrape together $2k to have it finished at one of the many shops I went to today than to sell it and have money in the bank. Noel is in 100% agreement. This really tested my metal, though. Its not the money. Its MY car and I have tweaked it to be such. I am fat enough to starve wink.gif

(1) Glad to see you're keeping it and scraping togther the $2k and time to finish it.

(2) After thought, I have to agree with chuck. I had a ver similar experience with my first 914. I had a lot of time/memories in that car: I'd had it since college (20 years!) and I was only getting rid of it because I couldn't afford to fix the (terminal) rust. It took decades years a year of whining before my wife said she wouldn't kill me if I bought another one...and converted it to a six (still a work in progress -- love your wheels!)

(3) When you're done with school, buy the wife a 914 too! beerchug.gif

So tonight I made my woman meatloaf (no innuendo) for when she got home from her 8:30am-10pm day and we talked some more. I said, "honey, we could pay off our new car and still have left over funds." She was tempted, but no. She then said that she would be willing to sell the benz! (Mr. C) And I was like hell ya! I would love to sell the benz for a bus. Its a great car, but I am tired of it and need to move on.

As for buying her a 914, she wants a green 73-74 2.0 stock and I'll get it for her someday biggrin.gif

For all of you saying "real six", I am not in anyway into this for an investment. I am purely in it for the enjoyment of it and nothing more so a real six would pretty much be lost on me. I have the best friends in the world that help me not to go bankrupt chasing my 914 dreams, and I manage to raise enough $$ through tranny rebuilds and bolts to cover the cost of most things if given enough time. I bought the car with money I got from someone hitting me on my motorcycle and customized it with funds I made doing bolts/tranny/and interior work down in mexico. I can find the money to have someone else finish it for me by selling all of these parts my friend wants me to sell, I figure. We shall see. If anything I was VERY flattered that someone liked my car that much$$.

Listen to Noel. She knows you better than you know yourself it seems. Keep that in mind when you are doing your long hours in residency too.

if you are talking about me? the nicest thing about the v8 is that you start in 2nd gear and thus your first shift is to third (straight back ) - amost like having a sequential gear box - until you need to go into 4th but then 5th is straight back again - nice : )

Keep the car and get it running, it'll be worth more in running condition, plus you get to enjoy it.

I dont sell cars, I collect them. I wouldn't sell my teener and I *can't* sell the fiesta, I'm just going to drive it until it goes kablamo blowup.gif . Hopefully right when I get my next teener av-943.gif

I was talking about Mike.

But come to think of it... 2 914's are better than 9 214's! biggrin.gif

Hmmmmmm.....
a true "Tough Call" here!
Emotional attachment is what Porsches are all about; otherwise we would all be driving Camrys ;>))
BUT... sit back and think it thru slowly...
$25K in hand...
For $10K, you could find a very very nice 73/74 2.0, maybe even in a shade of green that your intended would like, and have $15K in the bank...
Now you've done the future Mrs. a favor, and you still get to drive a sporty 914... Fix it up, you say? Fine, just dip into the old $15K with no worries, Mon!!!

Oh, you need a bit of scratch down the road of life? Well, guess what? You have a lil' ol' Honey Pot to go to... AND, you still have a nice 914 to sport around in...

Don't be hasty... the $25K (assuming it IS real money!) will not be around for long... that buyer and his cash will soon be parted! Not that your Beauty isn't special, but a buyer interested in your 914 is also interested in others of the same type, and they are out there!

Then you are back to having to finish your car and see what happens if you HAD to sell it at some future date... most likely, you would NOT have to dump the 2.0, and if you did, there would be folks standing in line to give you your money back for it and then some!

Think it thru... and you may be able to nave the best of both!!! BTW, a VERY nice 914... love those alloys!!!

Sell it.

Posted by: Gint Aug 7 2007, 10:42 PM

no brainer...

If you can make money selling a 914, go for it. For the kind of money you're talking about you could buy someone else's finished work and still pocket some cash. And you'd be doing this... driving.gif

Posted by: BKLA Aug 8 2007, 02:06 AM

Sell it! biggrin.gif

then... idea.gif

Tell him to call me 'bout "BLUbyU" (my '75 with 2.7 6, flairs, getty dash, 15 x 8 polished fuchs, 911S front suspension, 911 vented rear rotors w/ modded 914 rear calipers...etc etc etc)

I'll sell....

I'm gunna fix up my racer!!!!! It was F U N being back on the track after so many years!!! thumb3d.gif

Keep it; it's your signature, your mark, your work.

you have a car that is you, part of your creativity.
you will be a doctor, time will be at a minimum, money most likely will not.
you will be a husband, subtracts less time
you may eventually become a dad you'll be using amphetamines to stay awake 24/7and still cant get enough time smile.gif and they will suck money out of your wallet faster than any car restoration project.

sure you can BUY another car but i doubt you will have time to Build another in the near future, these cars are slowy but surely fading/rusting away. by the time you have settled your career and your kids have gone to college, you probably will not be able to find any teeners to restore, they will all be 60K concourse cars or Frankenstein conversions.

finish your car, drive it, take pride in letting others see what you created with your blood sweat and tears.

now if you were 18 years old, single and had a job at wallmart sell the fucher and get an education. biggrin.gif

Ok.. here's my $.02..

Don't sell it. Not now, not ever. You will regret it.

Our 914s are like our children. There is no amount of money that would get me to sell either of them. Nobody, not even Bill Gates, could scrape together enough money for one of them.

I had a 69 Firebird that I sold about the time Betty and I started dating, 22 years ago. I regret selling that car to this day.

That car is part of you, and there will never be another like it. You put your heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears into it. No amount of money can replace that.

Remember, this is not a rational, logical decision that you can run through a calculator and come out with a profit. It is an emotional decision. If owning a 914 was a coldly logical decision, then both the 914s that we have would have long since been relegated to a wrecking yard, and none of us would be here.

You can always earn more money, you will never be able to completely replace this car. There will never be another just like it.

A very definitive answer, Clay. clap56.gif agree.gif

My own 914, which I've had since '75, has been to Parades from Ashville to Aspen. It's been to Florida and DC with my wife and daughter on vacation. I've driven it to Indy, Cleveland, Knoxville and St. Louis. I've autocrossed, rallyed and concours'd it. Sell it?........money, I can get from a bank. A 914 with the meaning, memories and moments I've had with my '70/4......priceless .

DON'T SELL

thats a really gorgeous 914. drooley.gif dont do it you probably have more $$$ invested in it even without your time included. chair.gif

Posted by: Root_Werks Aug 13 2007, 08:39 PM

I had a guy offer me $15k for mine and I politely said "No thanks". He gave me his number (which I have lost) just in case something else might change my $$mind$$.

I have purchased this car 3 times in my life, yes 3 mentally disturbed times I have passed cash to someone for this car. At $25k it would be gone, but it's not as nice as yours.

So my advise is do what feels right. At $20k I would really be on the fence about letting my car go again. $25k would be a no brainer. I just installed the Engman innner long kit so that would make it even harder to pass along to someone else. wink.gif

You said yourself you put a lot of blood and sweat into your car, so only you know what it's worth. Whatever you decide, please keep us posted!

I will sell you my green 73 2.0 with FI for 12k poke.gif
but you have to fix first gear biggrin.gif

Glad you kept it

Mike tell us what you have decided to do, sell or keep.
Craig

Sorry, I thought I said already, I kept it. If I bought another one I would only want to make it the same as this one and that seems silly. Money, I can make.......some day wink.gif

Posted by: MoveQik Aug 14 2007, 09:38 AM

Tough call. If someone put $25k in front of me, I would think about it pretty hard just so I could consider getting into a different toy.

Posted by: Root_Werks Aug 14 2007, 10:56 PM

Good on you Mike, you are a man that knows what his time is worth.
