so far, we have at least 2 914s, maybe 3 if McMark can work out the kinks in time.
- SirAndy + some Girl i met the other day
- Jim Tabor + Wife (?)
- McMark + (?)
the plan is to leave early thursday (20th) and stay overnight in either reno or somewhere further up 80.
then drive through to moab on friday.
coming back monday (24th).
anybody else from the greater bay area or nevada or utah going?
Andy
Where's Fiid? Tom Trudell? Rob Sime? I'm sure there's more...
Jeff Keyzer is out.
I need to prepare myself for a nerve wracking trip...
I am going...
But, the 914 is a pile of parts so I will be driving my E36 M3. I am 20 miles south of SLC. I was planning on leaving on Friday sometime..
Allan's thinking...
WOW, I didn't realize it was so far.
Is that the same route you guys took last year?
I don't know if you guys know this guy, PORSCHECB, but he expressed interest in making the trip too.
Tom, don't the insuranvce companies make exceptions on the mileage if you are driving to an event? I think i still owe you a beer
America is big. Where'd I put my SUV?
Wait a second... Leaving early on Thursday and stopping in Reno? Uhhh, what're we going to do for the other 12 hours in Reno? Reno's only 4ish hours away.
Let's go to West Wendover NV. It's 9 hours and that'll leave us around 6 hours on Friday.
Andy,
What's the crow's flight radius on your trip?
It looks like you're driving pretty far North to come south again.
Just curious
I agree Andy, take a look at going on hwy 50 from Reno...much shorter, and more lonely...not much out there but we'd save a couple hundred miles each way it looks like...just looking at your map...I don't have a good one...guess I'll mapquest the two routes. Nope, just looked 929 miles and 17.5 hours...must be a MUCH slower hwy.
I did the same thing last year Jim. 80 is more out of the way, but faster.
Thanks! Suppose I ought to get registered
Fiidster.
Congrats Fiid, now you can bitch with the rest of us with impunity...glad you're going with us.
WTG Fiid! Having to go thru the naturalization process myself, I think it makes you more appreciative of being an american citizen.
You'll still speak with that charming british accent and exclaim "bloody hell" right?
Jen
Bloody right!
I'm stoked to be heading to Utah! I'm trying to persuade Keyzer to come too
It's a no-go for me. I'll be up in Oregon that weekend.
The same thing happened to me last year. Oh well, maybe next year.
Congradulations Fiid. Welcome to the club.
I want to go but I signed up for a machine shop class that goes every Thursday night. Well, I am about the class.
Thinking about making the trip too. I will know in the next few days. Keep me posted on the caravan plans.
T
Andy, Jim, Mark, Fiid - Are your plans to leave Moab on Sunday, spend the night in Nevada and home on Monday?
Let me know.
T
OK, I have been cleared to go but... My stepson Nicho is arriving on the 22 of September. I think it is fairly important that I be there for his arrival. So, I guess I am out.
Sounds Good. I've got my room booked in Moab. What were your thoughts about the stop on the way out? West Wendover; $55 a night at the Peppermill.
thanks
T
West Wendover is probably the best idea. Honestly coming home in one shot last time wasn't a big deal. If people are stopping on the way home, I might push through. We'll see how I feel at the time.
Would you guys mind if some non-914 people caravan down with you guys from Elko, NV?
My friends that were at RRC last year want to come down again this year.
Yeah, the more the merrier...especially if we have to push one...or something....
OK, since I have the time today I thought I'd try to firm up the plans everyone has so that we might get to cross the desert together from Reno to SLC. I plan to either leave after the traffic on Wed. night and sleep over in Reno, that will make an easy roll to Wendover the next day and ony a 2 hour run to SLC on Friday where we may be able to link up with the gang there and caravan with them into Moab....what I need is a firm count of who is going and if you would rather go up on Wed. nite or at o'dark :30 Thurs. am and we meet and leave together from Reno...we should try to cross the desert in a bunch...you know, just in case. I'll try to get hold of Eric Shea and find out when the SLC mob are gonna leave for Moab and we will have a plan. If the phone is easier I'm at 650-355-1827 and I'll be around most of the day today(Thurs.9/13) Tomorrow were driving to celebrate 9/14/07
I was going to propose meeting up at Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe in Oakland for breakfast on Thursday morning, and heading out once we were done eating.....
I don't think I'm going to get away with leaving on Wednesday night (kids to look after), although it's not impossible. I'll try to get clearance from the tower.
Will you guys be going down the 15 to the 70, or cutting through Price to Green River?
Don't worry about meeting up with peeps in Elko, they bailed out.
I don't know yet...probably whatever way is the shortest..
Naw, I think mapquest has us turning south on 15 just before SLC and then on hwy 6 or 9...I'm like Jimi that way. So mapquest says only 9+ hours from the bay area to west wendover....based on that I think I'll leave Thurs am about 4-5 o clock...that should make it an early day and then we only have about 5 hours the next day to get to Moab...WooHoo!
Change of plans - I'm flying into SLC on Friday and Fiid is going to pick me up on the way. Woohoo! A cheap $100 one way ticket sealed the deal!
Sorry to say, I have am not going to RRC. Guys, have a safe drive and have fun.
I do have a room booked if anyone wants it let me know. I will cancel it tonight so let me know soon.
Thanks
T
Going through Spanish Fork Canyon, Price, and all that is much quicker than going I15 to I70.
I am leaving around 9:00 on Friday from Northern Utah County about 20 miles south of SLC. I won't be in a 914, I'll be in my Red M3, keep an eye out for me and if I see some teeners I will just cruise with them.
Edit: I will be in my Blue Cayenne, M3 blew a radiator hose..
Aight peeps. I'm leaving Thu morning. Where are we meeting? What time? Time to agree and commit to a plan!
Are we meeting JimTab at like 12noon in Reno or somethin?
Sweet! Jim - are you going to join us? Or are you still on the Wednesday night kick?
How about aiming for 9:30 breakfast?
It's a deal. Jim's never happy He tells me he's part scottish so that probably explains it...
Can someone please make sure Fiid doesn't forget to pick me up at the airport in Salt Lake?
Yeah, stop in and pick me up.
Jim?
8:30 at rudy's tomorrow morning!
Andy
I'm up and getting ready for the longest drive ever in a 914. This is going to be interesting...
RRC HERE I COME!!!
I'm hitting the road any minutes. See you guys at Rudys, and you other guys in Moab!
All of you be safe ....
Not going to the RRC?
Well, now you can go in spirit. Why? Because I stuck a GPS tracking device on Fiid's car this past Tuesday! You can see the caravan's progress as they make it over to Moab. I can't promise it will keep working the whole time, but it is working as of this morning.
You can watch their progress directly on Google Maps by following this link:
http://aprs.he.fi/?call=KF6PBP
Enter callsign KF6PBP if it asks you for one. You should see a blue car like in the picture below.
Attached image(s)
That's pretty cool
That is awesome. Go FIID!!!!
Dammit, I wish I could have gone. But this tracking this is Very Very Cool!
T
Too Cool!!!!!!!!!
This is just like in the movies.
Yeah, complete with suspense because the tracker was last received at 11:37 and I haven't heard from it since! I think the mountains are blocking the signal, chances are they will show up around Reno. Or Fiid unplugged the transmitter so he could plug in his ipod.
I can't see anything! They must be in stealth mode.
Fiid says they are almost in Reno.
its working on my iPhone. BTW we're in Reno right now eating Wendy's. Time to get back behind the whee.
I see you guys now! Quit playing slots and get going.
That GPS rocks! Too cool! I need one of those for when my daughter gets her license (not for another 5 years thank God).
Well we didn't get very far. As we left the parking lot my new CV joint broke. So now I'm riding with Jim and we'll get my car on the way back. Any members in Reno?
Still the longest drive.
Bummer Mark.
See you guys tomorrow. I'm leaving right now.............
now Fiid's trans is going out.
They made it to Wendover! I'm arriving in SLC tomorrow morning at 11:30 and then I hear it's time to swap a transmission...
Attached image(s)
Tranny is sitting on the shelf here ready to go, pick up lube though. (I just got "tranny" and "lube" in one sentence and, I was serious ) CV's are here as well... grab what you need and you'll have them in hand when you get back.
You guys should leave Wendover now and get a jump on the tranny, then send a delegation to get Jeff at 11:30. The garage is yours... air tools, jacks, (sorry, no jack stands) HA! Just Kidding!! Of course I have Jack Stands!! You could have the tranny in by the time Jeff gets back from the airport.
E.
Looks like they picked up Jeff at the airport in SLC, and are now headed South to Sandy at 62mph. I love this GPS thing.
Attached image(s)
Jeff... what GPS tracker are you using... I would love to get one of those.
4 little 914s left california to go to moab ...
then there were 3 ...
then there were 2 ...
maybe 1 1/2 actully ...
drinking beer, watching fiid and jeff wrench. waiting for pizza delivery ...
Andy
PS: the GPS tracker sucks. nobody here has a blue car ...
Evil... call us please. PM'd and Emailed #'s
We are knee deep in tranny's...
Called and consulted. I believe you will be fine, but what a clusterfuch!
putting the tranny back in ... swapped parts of the cluster from a known to be somewhat better stack ...
the nut came off and the bearing slipped off and got chewed up and made a complete mess of the internals. got the thing all cleaned, new bearing and stuff.
we'll probably try to move her in about 30 minutes or so ...
then, hopefully, we'll have 2 1/2 cars running again.
Andy
On the road again... the little blue GPSmobile should be headed South on I-15 at this time.
ETA in Moab will be around 11:00 unless they stop for gas and chow.
Amazing work done by Jeff, Mark, Fiid and Andy. They yanked apart two tranny's, pulled the good mainshaft bearing off mine and put it into Fiids.
My tranny was a short stack and it would have had Fiid whirling around the countryside at about 5,000 RPM. We also had some TO bearing fork issues where mine will use a 911 cable. The decision was made to fix Fiid's tranny.
Ha! I didnt even realize that hte Jeff I was talking to was my friend
I was wondering who "Jeff" was
(the morphine is for the patients... )
Just got off the phone with Andy. Fiid is doing great. Tranny is running like a champ. They're 50 miles outside Moab. Should be there around 11:45PM.
Mike, thanks for your help. It was good to have assurance on the other end of the phone.
Joe... Thanks for the call. All things meant to be. I think it was good I was here to get this tranny thing resolved. Miss ya Bro.
E.
we made it!! Got in around 11:30pm. Trans is great. Thanks for the hospitality Eric!!!
yo!
Any time man
Coming home now. Past SLC. Cars are doing fine. Middle of nowhere. Rain but not too bad so far. Hoping to hit Elko tonite.
I just got home...
We stopped in Reno and installed my new CV and drove home. What a TRIP! But it was all worth it. I had a great time. See everyone next year!
I'm home too. What a trip! I should have pictures up soon.
glad you guys all made it home safe. thanks for coming out
I'm home too.
Totally unforgettable trip. Winning "Golden Wheelbarrow" and the "Never Say Die Award" was so awesome!!!
*HUGE* thanks to Eric for the tranny bits, garage, and hospitality; and also huge thanks to the whole NorCal contingent for rolling up their sleeves and getting me back on the road. You guys all rock!
I had a total blast!
I made it home at about 11:00 pm. I stopped to see my boy in Woodland for an hour or two...it was a great trip, only Andys car came thru unscathed...and I can't say enough about the folks who helped us get thru it all. Eric Shea...what a stud and Vanessa, thank you for putting up with us...always on short notice and usually we make a mess...you're the best. (Hi girls!) And when my car failed to start when we were deep in the mountains..a whole herd of teener pushers helped diagnose the problem, my distributor's pertronics unit had gone to "puppy heaven"...I figured I was screwed...but no, I was offered 3 different distributors, 2 coils, there were timing lights produced, ohm meters, tools, rags expert installation by my "ride along mechanic" Mark DeBernardi....I was amazed and a bit overwhelmed. Ernie, the dist is working fine, it got me back...and you were right about the stumble. I will get a new unit and return yours at the first opportunity...thanks again. It was a great event, I finally met Suzanne Dranow, I wish Howie had been there....he would have loved all the fuss. I got to see my friend Ed Morrow and meet his wife, and I scored some delicious honey..(Ed has a deal with his bees). Put a few new names and faces together, and while we may have missed out on the Friday BBQ, we made it there in time for the Friday evening drunken brawl....and the Saturday version with rain accompaniment...those of you that missed this missed this should wish you hadn't...it was great...thanks to the organizers...and they were able to donate the leftover 650.00 to the Stroke foundation in Howards name....what could be better(Suzanne's idea I think) I still miss him but I think he would have approved of the event. Time for bed....Jim
So Jeff or Fiid - what was the GPS unit used for this trip? Can any unit be linked to google earth as this one was?
Let me know.
Thanks
T
Trevor, it's actually not GPS. It's a HAM radio 'hack' that reported our location.
It's basically a GPS reciever (gets your coordinates) - coupled with a HAM radio transmitter. So - every few seconds or minutes - it fires off the current GPS coordinates, which get gathered up on a database server somewhere.
The easiest way to replicate it would probably be to use a bluetooth GPS reciever and a small application on a Windows Mobile Phone, iPhone, or some other phone with a development platform. Either that or do exactly what Jeff did and get an amateur radio (or HAM) license and use the same tech. Getting a HAM license nowadays is very simple - you only need to complete a 35 question test to get licensed.
Huh, how about that.... Somehow after hearing it explained 10 times, I still missed the fact that it had GPS involved.
So if I have this correct, I would need a GPS unit and a bluetooth GPS receiver?
Or did I miss the boat?
Thanks for your patience
T
To duplicate the system we were using on Fiid's car you would need:
1. an amateur radio (ham) license
2. an amateur radio transceiver set to 144.39 MHz ($100-$200?)
3. a GPS receiver that outputs NMEA serial data packets
4. an APRS transmitter that takes those packets and encodes them into an audio signal for the radio to transmit
5. a decent antenna for the radio, ours was a small mag mount antenna for the 2m (vhf) band and it worked ok.
#4 was a kit that I got for around $30 called TinyTrak. It's a solder together kit with a preprogrammed microcontroller.
Or, go get one of those kits for younger drivers that will show you within 10 fee where your car is at and how fast it is going.
Where are the event pics?
There are three that I know off..
