First
Second... do a search on this site and on Pelican about your engine. This is a type 4 whereas bugs are a type 1... different animals.
You need to figure some things out before you go replacing things etc.
Do you have the original FI or carbs?
Have any modifications been done to the engine?
Are all the pieces there?
Answer some of those questions is a good place to get started.

Both the VW and 914 are 4's but entirely different.
A good place to look for info is here but do some surfing at http://www.PelicanParts.com too

Sounds familiar….
I bought a '74 1.8 recently that had been sitting since 1986 with 49,000 miles. Here's what I did to get it on the road safely.
Pulled the motor
- replaced all vaccuum hoses for the FI
- replaced all rubber fuel lines
- oil change
- transmission oil change
- fuel filter
- new clutch disk
- valve adjustment
- had fuel injectors rebuilt
- spark plugs
- Mallory Unilite (clearly optional) with new plug wires
- air filter
Entire brake system gone through
- calipers rebuilt by PMB, with turned rotors and new pads
- SS brake lines
- 19mm master cylinder
New tires and wheels
The rest of the stuff I have done has been cosmetic to bring it back to original configuration. It's been fun and I love the L-jet system. Smooth as silk. Enjoy!

Congrats
Lucky you.
I am working on a car now that has sat for the past 14 years. The fuel turned to black goo in the bottom of the tank.
Needless to say it will need a new fuel tank before it runs.

You may want to explore that VERY thoroughly. That "wheel well" is actually an intregral part of the chassis. Inspect the longs... pull the rocker panels and poke around. Where there is some rust.... there will be more.
