So I just got hosed AGAIN by UPS on customs brokers fees...

Then while looking through the board I see another Canuck posting and I get to thinking eh....

We should band together for potential parts sharing (without customs fees) Just like all those guys from Kalifornia....

So I'll start...

Explain a little further. I sell a lot and ship lots of P914 parts to Canada. Are you ordering several of something?? beerchug.gif

Tons of parts, just need time to find things in my stash.
I do have a list of Canadian members.

I live in Milton, Ontario.

I have a parting out '71 in Brampton, and a '74 1.8 sulking in my garage at home refusing to start for me.

There are not many of us but at least Clayton doesn't live up here. smile.gif

I only refrence the "land of Arnold" as there seems to be so many teeners there and you are always dropping by to swap parts, beers, stories, drop someones engine etc...

Up here in the "great White North" not many teeners have survived...and the few teeners here seem to be spread pretty thin.

Every time we need to get a part (new or used) or a tool...or some expert 914 service we seem to have to go State side....when we do... the shipping charges are not too bad, but then there's customs (duty) which is really just an insult...however far worse than that, to pay the duty requires a customs broker...UPS, FedEX, Purolator are not shy about hammering huge service charges to do the duty paperwork...even the USPS/Canada Post get you pretty good. (At least our dollar is almost the same now)

So If'n we few canucks were to trade amongst ourselves, we could even use greyhound bus for cheap shipping and save a bundle....

Nuthin' 'gainst U 'mericans....just want to see who's local. Maybe we can go for beers too. beerchug.gif

BTW we don't have a "President" up here...we got's us a "Prime Minister"eh....

Cheers,

Sean

I buy a lot from the US but always try to ship USPS and keep $$ value under $20. No tax, duty or brokerage fees.
UPS double charged me for $126 in brokerage fees and I am still fighting with them 10 months later for a refund.
I have no parts car and no spare parts. I'm always looking for a parts car but deals keep falling through. A couple of times I've sent a club member to look at a car for me they ended up buying it and wanting to sell me parts from it. (No names but you know who you are)
It all good though, I hope I can help someone else.

UPS, FEDEX. Puralator all suck the life out of us when we bring stuff up from the USofA. $30 part $10 shipping, $35 'brokerage fee'. Bend over here it comes again.

I live close to the border - started thinking about getting some sort of post box in Watertown and have stuff shipped there.

Hey Doug don't give up on the parts car thing. I bought a new driver and am getting it sorted out. It is pretty complete but there are a few things that I'm having to take off the old one. You are welcome to the remainder. Heck - with your welding skill it might even escape the crusher.

Thats why I want to spend the winter there. Bring back a whole truck load of those rustfree parts. Be doing you guys a favor - you won't be tripping over them as much.

i kick the ups fees by shipping to an american shipping co, and go pick it up when they call, and just pay duty at the border.... then i am fifteen minutes from the border.....

And if there are multiple packages, make sure they all clear on the same customs paperwork. I had a two package shipment that Fedex nailed me for that $35 for each box. sad.gif

I'm a Canadian boy, living in Regina, Saskatchewan. I hae a 74 2.0L, and I recently bought a 74 1.8L parts car. I'm hoping to hoard most of the parts, but if any of you Canucks need something, drop a line and we might be able to work something out.

Cheers,

Posted by: woobn8r Sep 18 2007, 09:42 AM

That's it ?

9 Canadians.....given the Canada/US relative size rule that would mean only about 100 US members or 10 Kalifornian members and there's alot more than that....

Maybe we should be "trolling" the other forums to unite the great white north....

I like the idea. Any which way with our dollar almost at par with the US most everything is a bargain compared to what we we've been paying.

Posted by: SLITS Sep 18 2007, 11:42 AM

I will only ship USPS overseas .... and yes, I consider the Canucks to be overseas av-943.gif

UPS, Fedex & whatever are just ripoffs when moving material out of the Good Ol' USA.

Naw - there are a bunch more but the snow is interfering with their internet connection.

Not everyone is on every day. But statistically I would suggest we are getting to be a really rare breed up here. Most of the production ones are long gone to rust and hard driving. Longarm has a great original northern car but it is really the exception. At the last Porvolks there were only about 10 or 15 cars and a couple of them were up from south of the border. Down in the warm dry states they have survived a lot better.

You probably aren't going to get a better forum to get all us hosers together. Some of the canucks may have landed at the club. newbies may wind up there too because of search engine weighting. (if you have a web page link to 914world) But last I look the traffic here is significantly higher here than at the club. Good bunch of 'subject matter experts' too. Jake, the crusty one, Dr914, DrEvil (hey - a pairadocs!),Pat Garvey, Eric Shea, and our own DaveP .. the list goes on.

Nother Canadian
Frank Winterlik at 900 Werks called me today to remind me to get in line for my 914 fall engine work and last time I was at his shop in Winfield there were at least 4 914's in his driveway waiting for work . One was a 6 outa Calgary but the rest were all BC'cars. Plus he has a his own original six.

I'm to busy to post. I'd rather drive my 914 then read about them on the internet

Nothing like that just the odd black bear eating the local garbage. The weather here in Vancouver since last November has basically sucked save the past few weeks.

I'm in Newmarket....Ontario (just north of T.O.)...If you are passing thru Davidson, I'd love to phone this guy and tell him I'm getting a pick-up!

Kyle seems okay...does nice bodywork, plays with alot of racecars and conversions...It's just the first time I've dealt with him and I can't figure out if he is just eccentric, has really really bad luck, or is a scammer....I'm usually willing to give the benefit of the doubt, but we are talking 6 months here....

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!!!

I know Kyle. I don't know him real well, but a couple of my friends are pretty tight with him. PM with the details and I'll see what I can find out. From what I know he's a good guy, so I'm guessing that he's just super busy or something. I'm sure we can get this all resolved.

As a vendor, I would not feel comfortable marking a package a gift if it was not. However, lets just say I sell you something that costs $50 normally, but may shipping and handling are $50 dry.gif so I discount the price of the item to $18 as a gesture of goodwill. The invoice value of the item is $18.

Food for thought.

Just waiting to see how high the Canadian dollar will go. At 1.07 US right now,
i need an exhaust system like a Bursch or Sebring(single tail-pipe) Any one know of a Canadian vendor for these.???

..... bye1.gif

Posted by: swl Nov 3 2007, 09:15 AM

I bought that single pipe locally but that was before the long sleep. Can't remember who it was - may not even be in business anymore. You could talk to Stefan over at the bug shop on Bingingham Ct. He's kinda pricey but has a good supply chain.

The yellow car has the same exhaust on it as the new one you saw in the garage. Whatever that is I don't really like it and wouldn't recommend it to you. Really harsh sounding. It could be that it is rotted out inside - won't know until I try the new one. Whatever the case, if you like the sound you can have the older one gratis. If the new one sounds the same I'll give you a good deal on it. I have the fuel system apart - might be the spring before I can test out the new muffler. Work schedule is killing any progress on the car.

Hi - I'm another canuck (Ottawa) lurking in the shadows of this site - enjoy it very much - unfortunately my stock 74 1.8 seems to be running rather well lately (at least it does the few chances I get to use it) so I haven't needed any technical help - if I did (actually this is inevitable) this would be the place for sure.

Shipping: has anyone tried having parts shipped to a U.S. fedex location (e.g. close to the border) and picked them up?

Posted by: GWN7 Nov 4 2007, 04:59 PM

I have both a P.O. Box and a UPS/Fedex drop point in the USA........had the PO box for 15 yrs now.......

Posted by: swl Nov 4 2007, 05:26 PM

How does the drop point work?

Posted by: davep Nov 4 2007, 05:50 PM

Another new lad as well: Enigma

I have arranged with a friend and member near Buffalo to accept a few parts for me. Still, it can be quite a drive down to get stuff. You will still get dinged at the border, but there won't be the broker fees. In SOME cases it is cheaper to ship cross border than within borders. You have to do your homework. If it can be mailed then broker fees are not too bad most times.

My company also has a warehouse in Batavia. Further to go, lots of tolls, and they lose stuff in the warehouse all the time, so I cannot trust them.

Their are several places just across the border from here that accepts UPS/fed ex parcels.

You order your items and have the ship to address given as the business name. So it would be:

Bruce Napier
C/O Mikes Hardware
street address
Pembina, ND
58271

Then when you go down they charge you (depending on the business) $3, $4 or $5 per parcel to receive it for you. When you get to CDN Customs you go in with your bill of sale for the items and pay the GST & PST.

I saved $400 on a set of tires by having them shipped to the border this way a couple weeks ago.

If the item can be sent by mail, it's cheaper to have it mailed directly here instead.

If you take a drive to Collins Landing or Omar and check around I bet you will find a place that does the same (will accept parcels for a fee).

Tons of parts, just need time to find things in my stash.
I do have a list of Canadian members.

Hey Dave, if you've got that list it would be great to notify everyone in Ontario and Quebec about the CanAm. Please pm me.

Just lurking, reading (saving posts) and slowly collecting parts.
71 with a 74 2.0 in garage with no idea where to begin....
Have repainted and rust proofed floor boards, replaced fuel lines, lined tank and few other small projects.
Parts slowly collecting at my cousins place in TN.

Hoping to find a garage heater to extend the time I can work in garage.

I see a couple 914s around Cambridge but not sure if anyone on the board.

You have RD just up the road in Guelph, they have an open house/swap meet the end of September, definitely worth going. Pete often gives a bit of a deal on his panels at the open house, bring cash. I often go to the open house, good times, cool demos and free Timmy's. Pete has a 914.
DaveP and john Tipper (14carrot) are also fairly close by.

I’ve made the swap meet a couple times. Yes it is just up the road from me.
Great guys to deal with for panels but I’m past that point now.
Typically it ends up being a weekend I’m away but will watch the website for this years.
Unfortunately, I won’t be getting there air cooled.
