That is a pretty damn nice car.

Looks like I'll be putting up on Ebay the 2 complete wood grain dash kits I have. I had NO idea it was that popular back in the day.

Posted by: vortrex Mar 17 2003, 03:31 AM

hah, those things are awful. no offense to you wood grain lovers. biggrin.gif

yeah nice looking car, love the color, but am not sure about what was done to the rear fenders. also, wonder why the owner suspects front end damage...what did he see? is a stock 2.4S really 200+ HP?

Posted by: Dave Cawdrey Mar 17 2003, 03:37 AM

I want one, Brad. Seriously. Is it a Real wood?

Posted by: Dave Cawdrey Mar 17 2003, 03:41 AM

Actually want stainless... Got any of them, B-

Posted by: Brad Roberts Mar 17 2003, 03:42 AM

Real wood. Looks just like the kit in this guy's 914/6. I have one from "Muellers" 6 and one from my wifes car. It could be sanded and stained easily. The pieces came off nicely.

Posted by: Dave Cawdrey Mar 17 2003, 03:48 AM

How much? ohmy.gif

I really like JP's...

Posted by: Brad Roberts Mar 17 2003, 04:13 AM

Let me make sure I have all of the pieces from my wifes car (hers is a 4cyl and is different from the 6)

The 914/6 pieces are at the shop. The 4cyl dash kit is here in the garage "somewhere".

B

Posted by: Dave Cawdrey Mar 17 2003, 04:19 AM

I prolly want it (knowing myself) Jus lemmeno...

Posted by: Lawrence914-6 Mar 17 2003, 08:35 AM

That kind of thing is pretty easy to do for yourself. (Wood grain, that is).

I did all the dash pieces in my 911 in walnut this winter - all from the same board so the grain matches the entire length of the dash. Also, I turned my own shift knob out of walnut on the lathe.

Total cost - about 20 bucks.

Damn, that car is tempting... I have always said that the 2.4S engine would make a really nice 914-6... And the "bumped" rear fenders... Yowza!

BTW, the 2.4S engine was rated at 190 HP DIN spec.

Cool car, love the color...the rear flair technique is cool too. Get it a new steering wheel and rid of that wood dash and I'd hit it wink.gif
Only problem is that I wouldn't want to buy a car with 100 million miles on it, haha biggrin.gif

Appears to have carbs, not MFI. Does that change the horsepower # ?

Posted by: olav Mar 17 2003, 12:01 PM

I could be wrong but I thought the value of a factory six was derived from how original it is.

This car doesn't have the original engine, wheels, steering wheel, or carpets and as been in an accident. No factory tool kit either.

So, if this guy wants $17,000 for a non-original factory six does that mean original number matching factory sixes should get more money?

Or do factory sixes with anything in them get the same price regardless of originality?

Just curious.

I found a nice ivory factory six in Monterey VIN #9140432320 with everythins original asking the same price.

http://home.attbi.com/~thesaylors/Porsche9146.htm#Pictures

This one looks pretty darn clean and ready to modify or for concours.

Posted by: vortrex Mar 17 2003, 12:04 PM

that ivory one does look very nice, too bad it's a color change car (although it appears done right). this car has been for sale for a very long time though, wonder why?

in general it seems 914-6 prices are going thru the roof. I think the best deal was $16k for the nice irish green one in carmel.

Posted by: olav Mar 17 2003, 12:10 PM

What was the original color? Did talk to the people about the car? I didn't see any funny business with the pictures. Wasn't Ivory available in 1970 and that's the clue?

Curious.

I guess they have been asking a lot for it too. They say it was appraised at $19,000. That's pretty high.

Posted by: vortrex Mar 17 2003, 12:12 PM

the certificate of authenticity pictured on his site has the original exterior color has metallic green. kinda strange he doesn't mention the color change. and how can you win concours with a color change? this car has been up for sale for probably 2 years now from what I recall.

Posted by: olav Mar 17 2003, 12:15 PM

Oh, I never looked at the certificate. That is weird.

Posted by: vortrex Mar 17 2003, 12:18 PM

that car does look mint though. obviously he hasn't been trying to sell the car too hard. it is back up on autotrader as of last week. I think a couple years ago he was asking more than he is now. very strange about the color change, it almost seems like the certificate is wrong! I mean who would spend all that money to restore a 914-6 and then do a color change from a great color to a boring color?? biggrin.gif

Posted by: olav Mar 17 2003, 12:25 PM

Yah, that is so weird that I emailed him to ask about it.

I would have kept the metallic green for sure.

I was looking at the pictures and the engine lid looks to have the correct stickers on the left side regarding fuel and stuff so, that is why I never would have considered it a color change car.

Posted by: vortrex Mar 17 2003, 12:31 PM

I don't think I've ever seen a metallic green six before, would have been cool. if that car wasn't a color change I'd be tempted. looks like my house is going to sell for more than expected, so I've got some 914 money to spend soon! biggrin.gif

let us know what the owner says.

Posted by: Porsche Rescue Mar 17 2003, 02:10 PM

Spoke with the seller of the ivory car last week. He readily acknowledged the color change. Appears to have incorrect rear bumper and valance. Very nice looking car though.

Posted by: vortrex Mar 17 2003, 04:16 PM

did he say how well the color change was done, who did it, or when? anything else interesting about the car?

Posted by: Porsche Rescue Mar 17 2003, 05:18 PM

He said it was a bare metal job. I asked about the bumper and he said the original was dented a bit so he bought a bumper on Ebay. Don't think he even knew there was a difference. It has been for sale off and on over the past couple of years at a higher price. He seems to be anxious to sell this time.

Posted by: Porsche Rescue Mar 17 2003, 11:46 PM

I was wrong in my previous post. I think I have looked at too many 6's for sale. The rear bumper appears to be correct on the ivory car in Monterey. My mistake.

Posted by: vortrex Mar 18 2003, 12:16 AM

here's the ivory ones original listing, almost 2 years ago. $2k less now. biggrin.gif

Brad, I dont want a kit but I'd sure like to check the measurements against the wood dash I'm working on (a lovely piece of african rosewood)/ JT

From the blue car on ebay ad:

QUOTE
The color of the car is original, however it was repainted 19 years ago (the same color). The pics do not show all of the flaws/scratches.

This might be a $17K car if it had nice paint and the potential buyer didn't mind the flares.

I noticed that in Panorama there are a number of 914-6es that sound pretty good. I guess they are all for sale because of the economy. It's probably hard to have $15-20K tied up in a just-for-fun car if you are out of a job.

Posted by: boxstr Mar 18 2003, 12:37 AM

When the black 2.4 was for sale in that ad I inquired about price, sit down, $30k. Is it for sale today and if yes? How much?
CCLinLOO

Posted by: vortrex Mar 18 2003, 12:51 AM

must be a whole lot nicer than the pic shows, not that it looks bad of course, but $30k?

"I noticed that in Panorama there are a number of 914-6es that sound pretty good"

any signal orange or silver ones?

Posted by: Brad Roberts Mar 18 2003, 12:55 AM

Derek,

I'm betting its the one that Joe Reitmer had up for sale and had the racers group try and move it. This guy probably bought it.

Jim,

I'll try and bring the pieces I need Thursday night.

Posted by: echocanyons Mar 18 2003, 09:49 AM

anyone know the story with this car?
The vin says its a 72 4 cyl but it has 5lug fuchs and the ad says its a six.
If this is a conversion it may be worth someones time.

I bet some of the factory six owners are seeing other factory sixes for sale for prices that are pretty high and they are jumping on the band wagon hoping to sell there car for whatever reason.

In general there are a lot of specialty cars on the market right now because people want more liquidity due to the economy, gas prices, looming war etc.

driving.gif

I remember when I was looking for my car 5 years ago. There were about 6 -8 to chose from but not in as good condition as the ones out now. The Internet was just getting going as a mechanism to sell cars. Now it's the place to put cars for sale and they are getting a lot more exposure too.

What am I talking about? I don't know, I just thought I would ramble on and on until I froth at the mouth and fall over backwards...ahhh.

Posted by: Mueller Mar 18 2003, 12:13 PM

The gold colored car is a conversion...the key is on the wrong side for the ignition.

and the VIN give it away........

QUOTE(Mueller @ Mar 18 2003, 10:13 AM)

Remember the blue car up in Reno? 72 Sixes had the ignition on the column, just like the four-cylinder cars.

But yes, the VIN is a dead give-away.

I thought about the '72 ingnition being "different" but yes, the VIN would be a giveaway unless there is something else "different" smile.gif

Posted by: GWN7 Mar 18 2003, 04:31 PM

Did they make any 6's with the 472 serial #? The reason I ask is I found a 72 on my last road trip that the owners son said it was a 6. They had the block, but no carbs for it, which was out of the car at the time I saw it. But what caused me to ask about this car was it had a upside down U bracket welded on the firewall and this bracket looked like it was factory instaled. None of my cars have this bracket and I wondered if this was a 6 front mount? Is there a factory list that shows they didn't use the 472 cars for 6's?

Posted by: Dave_Darling Mar 18 2003, 05:23 PM

There were a bare handful of (200?) 1972 914-6es. They had VINs starting with "914229".

For all 914s (except possibly the prototypes) the chassis was put together at Karmann in Osnabrück. The four-cylinder cars were finished there, while the Sixes were shipped off to Stuttgart to be finished.

It is unlikely that the six-cylinder engine mount was welded into a chassis in Stuttgart, and then the chassis was shipped back to Osnabrück--but it is possible... It is also possible that someone did a really clean install of an upside-down-U-shaped piece of metal in a regular 1972 914.

Posted by: GWN7 Mar 18 2003, 06:52 PM

Dave,

I have never seen a 6. Except in pictures on this and Pelicans board ( I know, I have lived a sheltered life)and never seen a picture of the front bracket/motor mount on either board.

But judging the age of the original paint that was on the car (in that area), it looked like a factory job. I didn't take a picture of the bracket, but I did note the serial #

If you or anyone else could post a pic of the proper bracket, I could tell if it is what I saw.

I have the phone number of the owner and will call him and ask what he knows about it.

What is possible to me is that as 72 was the last year that they made the 6's, that they ran out of bodies made for the 6's after they had shut down the production line and took some 4's bodies to fill orders they had on hand for the 6? Is there any way to find this out?

Posted by: GWN7 Mar 18 2003, 09:23 PM

I called the owner of the car tonight and got the skinny on it.

It is a true 6 and has the 914043 serial number. I must have mixed up the serial numbers on the two cars I looked at while at his place.

Two pieces of good news are:

1) now I know what a 6 front engine bracket looks like smile.gif

2) the car is not only a 6, it is a GT car

what car?

Posted by: GWN7 Mar 18 2003, 10:35 PM

The car I saw on my last road trip, last month. It turns out the car is a 914-6 GT It is parked in a guys yard and would need a lot of work. He told me tonight that he has the original registration showing it is a GT car.

Posted by: vortrex Mar 18 2003, 10:38 PM

he as a $100k car sitting in his yard doing nothing?

Posted by: GWN7 Mar 18 2003, 11:28 PM

Yes

He dosen't want where it is or who he is put out there.

He's not sure what he is going to do with it and until he does, I will respect his wishes. The same, I'm sure you would do if asked by someone.

I told him if he wants some help with finding parts, ect. to join us on this board.

He has researched the car and has the documentation on it. He told me a lot more about it tonight and it was quite interesting. That's all I will say.

Posted by: vortrex Mar 18 2003, 11:35 PM

cool info, I don't think you have to worry about any of us stealing it off his property. LOL.

wow, only 6 GT cars made in '72 total is seems, rare car!!!

edit:

hmmm, you said it's a '72 but the VIN is from a '70?

Posted by: GWN7 Mar 19 2003, 12:01 AM

It's a 70. I mixed up the serial numbers from the 2 cars I looked at when at his place. I took pictures of the serial numbers when there and one didn't turn out, but the way I thought they were listed on my camera, I thought the #472 picture was on the car with the 6 bracket.

[QUIt is a true 6 and has the 914043 serial number. I must have mixed up the serial numbers on the two cars I looked at while at his place.
OTE]

I also looked at http://www.stazak.com/914/gt/ tonight.

The car isn't listed there, but some of the info on that site comfirms what he told me tonight.

I'm not being vague because I want it for myself. I can't afford it smile.gif And this isn't another "I've got a 914 limo" thread smile.gif

Posted by: vortrex Mar 19 2003, 12:08 AM

I don't think anyone on here can afford it! biggrin.gif it's always fun hearing stories about lost cars like this, hopefully the code of silence can be broken at some point. wonder how complete the stazak GT VIN list is?

Posted by: GWN7 Mar 19 2003, 12:38 AM

I don't think the list is very compleat. It lists 63 cars. 7 of which are dealer built cars.

There were 50 factory Gt's built and 400 dealer kits made.

So out of 450 possible cars.....there are 4 factory factory built cars unaccounted for and 393 possible dealer built ones unaccounted for.

Not that all the kits were instaled. Parts of these kits were probably sold as addons or not compleatly put on cars. Didn't Brad find parts from one not long ago? In that lost 914 parts warehouse? smile.gif

plus a bunch of original GT parts, like the 100 Liter gas tank ...

Posted by: Brad Roberts Mar 19 2003, 11:58 AM

The list that most people go by is the Kerry Morse list. The 1970 sounds correct.

Does he plan to restore it or sell it ??

I know of another one that is stripped but has the correct VIN and history to be a GT.

I really need to get my mind out of the gutter.

please tell him to sell it to someone who knows what to do with it. it'd be a shame to see it turned into a chevy conversion. biggrin.gif
