914World.com _ 914World Garage _ OT- digital camera question

Posted by: jdogg Mar 17 2003, 07:02 PM

Off topic, I know, but you guys all seem pretty good around a computer. I have a digital camera that shoots short movies - my question is there a way to reduce the file size of these movies to make them easier to send? boldblue.gif
Thanks-
Jason

yes there is.

get quicktime pro. open your .avi file in quicktime pro and then go to "file" and then "export". under export you should have "blah to quicktime movie" displayed. then click on the "options" button and then "settings" button and change the compression to sorenson video 3 (this is in the first pull down). you can also mute the audio in the conversion for an even smaller file. the sorenson compression will make a huge difference in file size and not lose any quality.

Vortrex, thanks for your quick response. I knew I could count on this board for an answer. beerchug.gif

If you have a windows machine, you can use "windows movie maker"
You can (very roughly) edit your movies with it and save it in another format and/or compress the quality

Unless you have an apple, I think Quicktime is a format that gets very little used (IOW most people won't be able to view it)

cheers,

Jeroen

Yeah, I personally hate the Quicktime clients (players) for Windows.

I would either compress for MPEG, WMV (Windows Media) or even RealVideo.

MPEG is by far the most "universal" and can be played on Macs, UNIX, Linux, Windows, and just about any other computerized gadget. AVI and WMV formats are basically Windows-specific.

I use Adobe Premier which can do any imaginable format or codec. For the Windows formats you can download the Windows Media Encoder (free).

(disclaimer: I don't work for Microsoft and don't even particularly like them, but hey, the stuff works, most of the time) wacko.gif

if you want the file size the smallest with and the highest quality you'll want to use quicktime with sorenson video 3 compression. real video is downright horrible.
