I have 5 months to wrap this thing up. I need to have time to work out any bugs before to West Coast 914 Classic. I'll be on the board less and in the shop more. So DON"T BUG ME! (kidding)
'Bout time! I should talk. Good luck!
I had to do it
So, about a year...
m
So where are you on the project? I've only seen one pic of it with the motor visible through the ripped out firewall.
Here ya go.

Your scaring me...ahhh ahh... the alien "resurection" LOL
Get back to work.
Oh.. and put some more lights in that damn place..
B
That motor just screams "seperate throttle bodies and Megasquirt" !!!!
You won't get good performance with duct tape over the intakes ....
lol
Rich,
Congrats on the restart! You have added motivation to my tiny projects. Look forward to seeing it out here in the summer!
kim.
Hmmm. I spy a 2002......................What is going on with that?
Perfect picture for a KY-Jelly advertisement!
No matter how big...
...enough KY will get it in!
The 32 Ford with the 928 engine was built here in NorCal. Mountain View to be exact. They used the whole drivetrain from a 928 in a tube chassis. It was red correct ??
B
yeah, whats the story with the bmw '02 ???
Brad,
I wanna see pics of that car. I've been thinking of that for a few years now. It's a way to get my Porsche & HotRod fix in one car! LOL!

Bring a trailer and come and get it. I'll make you a deal. It's a 1975 only real rust was the front floors from a typical leaking windsheild gasket. Needs paint and interior work. Teh doors have working power window lifts and power mirrors. NO TITLE. I saved the car from a crusher.
1975 short block
Twin 40mm Webers, 121 head with E12 Valves, Schrick Double valve springs, head was cut .111 over max recomended cut, custom manual chain tensioner(as in I made it), Custom cam gear(as in I made it), Paco 7800 series cam, Mallory mechanical advance dist., header
This motor was in one of my other 2002's that had 275/50/16 comp T/A's on the rear.
It would fry those big dogs right out of the shop!
The car has a complete new front suspension, Every thing! I mean everything! Also ADDCO big front and rear sway bars. We drove the car last week but it's tune up time.

Luke cleaned this up pretty good.

Have you taught them rust repair ?? Or do Honda's rust ??? LOL
B
Luke bought his first car, 1990 BMW 325IX. GOOD BOY! He just got rearended by a moron with no insurance! So were working on pulling it out far enough so we can fit a trunk lid and get the quarter panel off the left rear tire! Forrest just test drove a 1994 325IS but his parents put an end to that with an insurance quote. He gave in and bought a Honda! Aric can't decide what he likes. He had a 91 VW GTI last summer. We bought it at auction for $ 500.00 and replaced the rear bumper for $ 100.00. Sold it on ebay for $ 2500.00 He has a Jeep for the winter. (soft top!brrrrr) He really wants my 1995 M3. (ya right) But he doesn't think he needs a job to own it. I'm trying to steer clear of rust repair.
Cool project, and all Porsche to boot.As it should be.
Keep pluggin along. It'll get there.

Hi Rich -
I have been looking everywhere for a set of the old Addco swaybars - especially the front underbody style. My car had them but the front was bent when I had the car towed home when I initially purchased it. Is there anyway you would sell them seperate of the car (especially the front bar)? Please let me know.
Good luck on the Alien!
Scott S
You and I travel the same path. Radical 914's, MGA's BMW's. As much as I would like to help you out, The bar is installed on the Car. I would sell it but it would cost $ 1500.00 and you would still have to take the rest of the car with it. Sorry....
Rich that is a big throttle body in the CIS engine. is a Euro Piece? Wish the valley of my motor were that clean. There is going to be ALOT of torque generated with this lite car and 928 power. Crap I have to baby my 78 if the roads are damp and I am runnig 245/45-16 WR rated rubber and a 2.75:1 rear end.
So this means I just got to come ride in this car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok looked back at the spider intake YUP it is a EURO piece. What do you know about the engine? What is the number on the front rib by the oil fill? Euro motors put down 300 HP in CIS trim.
That's one of the most beautiful v8's I've ever seen. Great project!
Back in the trenches. We made a coool rear trunk panel.
Attached image(s)
That looks great Rich!
Nice
that car is gona be way to cool when it's done. What are you going to do about the firewall? Making a removiable access panel?
Eric
HO MY GOD! That ROCKS Rich!
M
Thanks all. Glad your enjoying my madness. I though about making a removable access panel but there isnt anything tha can really be serviced from back there anyway. In hindsight I really didnt need to remove the stock floor and rear trunk bulk head once I figured out how to move the motor forward. So the new panel is really fixing a mistake. (live and learn for the next one )
If I had a parts car I would just section back in a stock floor. the only mod would be a small dog house over the fuel distributor like the V8 chevy guy use with the HEI distributor.
Now that you've taken the alien that far, you have to theme the car out even more..
Green ghosted aliens, and gauges with not of this Earth markings, lic plate: ROSWELL
I dunno.. glow-in-the-dark intake runners..
M
I'm conflicted. I started out to do this car to appear to be a flared 4 or 6 cylinder car. Kind of a sleeper. I dont really mind the trunk pan mod because I needed to put something back in there. But I really dont want to take it too far. I had a friend over last night helping with the trunk pan. We finished it up and he asked if I was ready to do the front lid next!
I'm Having fun with it but If I had a stock trunk floor around here I would hang the alien on the garage wall and put the stock piece back in.
On the other hand... My son was talking about glowing green digital gauges, wild stuff all over the place.
Rich. The sleeper idea sounds like a great one. I'd leave the rear trunk the way it is, heck the top covers it anyway! Green light's in the guage's would be cool and you would only see them when you turn the headlight's on, it would kinda personalize the car with a couple of sleeper mods(bad joke).
Eric
Fine then.
I'll find someone else to influence!

Hi this may or may not help. There are flexable dipsticks/sleeves available. You can mount them anywhere within reason.
I'm 5'7" with a 32" inseam. I have about 4" behind the seat to the new firewall.
I'm sure you've said this before, but how much leg room are you losing because of the firewall re-engineering? Probably only a problem for drivers over 6 feet tall (and we all know aliens is shorty folk anyways).
The top of the new firewall is only like having a cage with a cross bar behind the seat.
I think dipstick -thru- the firewall would be trick. Check your oil without leaving the comfort of the cockpit.
Rich,
I'm highly impressed with your frankenstein creation. That car is going to be wicked no doubt about it. Goodluck and I hope all your problems will be few and are quick to resolve. I look forward to seeing it at Barber Dave's meet. I'll be bringing mine out for the first time also.

Hard to get any work done tonight. Had to shovel snow!
Still got 4 DZUS fasteners on.
Woo Hoo!!
BTW: map quest says about 250 miles of two lane black top. to Mosinee from here. I'm not sure what route I'd take yet. But I'm sure I'd just jump on US 35 in Superior. Well se what happens.
DZUS fasteners done. Next radiator shrouding.

I did the comparision on mapquest, says it 1/2 hr more driving time for me to take the ferry.
Funny thing Mapquest says it's a 3.5 hr drive from Winnipeg to the US border, a distance of 60 miles.
Man, that would be great to come over for some MI events, I'd help out with that.
I live about 2 hrs east of Detroit and about 3 hours south of Ludington (where the Badger calls home).
Let's do it!!!
Tom
Rich,
On your new firewall, how did you form the stiffening ribs on the flat panel? I assume there a machine that does this?
Mike
Thanks for the info. As the event gets closer I want to plan a route. I thought it would be cool to do the ferry ride some day.
heres a coool photo.

Sweet! I don't like red, but I appreciate how it all ties together! Well done. I can't wait to hear it burbling and rumbling at the WCC! You've got my vote for Best Transplant.
I didn't understand your measurements. Please double check your post.
Incase anyone is still up. This is what I've been up to this weekend. Blasted and painted the exhaust manifolds.
Attached image(s)
Most of the weekend was spent lengthing the wiring harness. I need the rubber boot on the fire wall to face to the right side of the car and run up the right side, across the top of the firewall and then to the relay board. I sectioned a harness from a parts car I had. (I don't throw away anything) Every wire was soldered with induvidual shrinkwraped then I covered the new harness with some big shrink wrap. I need to pick up some brackets to hold the new harness but it's ready to install.

This is my first post on this BBS, but I recognize a bunch of names from the PP BBS.
I just wanted to say Rich, you are one BAD ASS fabricator!!
You have inspired me to get the hell out in the garage and finish up the '73 (that was put on a 2 year hold while I was in school). Wish I could make the WCC with you guys...maybe WCC 2005!
First time I've seen a 928 engine...WICKED!!
I'm still hashing over the idea of a "Northstar" transplant myself.
Hope to see the "Alien" in person someday!

Kevin,

Hi rich,
i'm following your project since you've launched your website with the first pics.
It's an incredible work and I can not wait to see how it will look when it's finished !!!
I'm from germany and we have two cars here build by the same person with a 928 engine.
Unfortunately I have not much details about these cars but I know that he is using 915 trannies and
one of the two cars is provided with a 928 gts engine.
The firewall to the passenger compartment is modified on both cars as well as the rear trunk.
One question out of curiosity: Do you think that it's possible to install a 928 engine without modifying the
firewall ?
keep up the real great work and provide us with more pics of your car !!!
Benno
Rich,Unf*ckin'believable!
That's one amazing piece of work/art!
And the pics.! Beautiful! I'm drooling all over my keyboard,I'm just another Newbie named Kev.
Your work has inspired me to get off my Fat *ss and tool around on my projects(2) Keep up the awsome work and pictures!
How come that dork Jesse James has his own show, but Rich doesn't?
Because Jesse does it in a week, Rich (though doing an amazing job) does it in.. umm...
Err?
Andrew
Hey Rich!
I'm with the others -- when you post progress, it's a serious motivator. The pics are huge. I have to see the alien at some point. It's becoming like a mecca or something. Is WCC looking like a possibility still?
kim.
Ya Ya.. I used to own a Collision store. I had 6 guys doing Collision and Custom work. I could have built this car in 3 months not 3 years! My life is different now. I have a regular job that is sucking the life out of me. But money talks and Bullshit walks.
It looks like I have alot of work left. And I do. But I'm pulling in some top talent (brother inlaw, friends) and training my son and his friends as we finish up some of the key parts of this conversion. I have the big push on now for the WCC and Barber Daves MWC. Your enthusiasum is helping to drive me forward.
If I can make the WCC you all can too. Because of the date of the event. I'm trailering the car out myself. I'm having my two sons and two of my oldest sons friends (the build crew) get out of school a week and a half early. They are flying with my wife to the Bay Thursday for the event. This thing is costing me big! But I'm really looking forward to meeting all of you!
Wow. I hope we live up to our billing out here!! (jeezus, I whine about the oil leaks from my car -- hm... and the radio doesn't work -- time to by a boxter -- heh heh -- never happen)
Dude, I hope for good fabricating luck on your completion binge -- there will be hiccups no doubt, but you seem to have cooked through the big uglies in fine style!
What are the big items left on the completion chart? (not meaning to bring up all the work right now -- just wondering where the big time hits will be on the build list)
Best!
kim.
New gaskets and seals for the motor, (ordered and on the way)
Finish the cooling system, (95% done)
Install the 19mm master cylinder, (17mm is outwaiting on new rubbers for the fill tubes ordered)
Install the new clutch tube in the tunnel,
semi-final install for mating the 928 wiring to the 914 harness, fuel line routing, cooling line routing, and gauges, build an exhaust
Complete teardown for Complete repaint inside and out, final assembly,
I have a cabinet maker building a sub-box and consule,
I have an upholstery guy doing the new back pad and Pasha seat inserts.
The car is coming out to the classic in a kind of a down and dirty run what ya brung state. But next winter I can tear it down for a detail job.
Count the days..... Your going to see some serious shit in the next two months...
Don't Bug me! (kidding )
Rich,
I emailed you some questions but you said to post them to remind you in this post.
1. What is the distance from the front of tranny to the center line of the axle cups on the 901 tranny?
2. You said you have piccs of a 928 motor and tranny bolted together on one of your computers can you please post it.
3. hows the progress comming havent seen a post from you in a few days.
Thanks,
I see many new names here lately! Some of you I've received mail questions from. Thanks for the interest and support!
Ok, This is supposed to be a 914 with a 928 motor and a 928 transaxle... You tell me...

For our new German friends I call this double vision. One of these cars is a 4 cam one is an "S"
Just a little fun. Now back to work.
Attached image(s)
Rock 'n Roll dude. Good to see the progress -- and the side pics are cool too!
kim.
It sure looks like the tranny has been moved back. Look how the driveshafts are angled forward.
Not a 928 trans axle. Way to short. Last time I wrestled one one them 928 tansaxles was when I put a new one in my car. Guess it was a fair matchup we both tip the scales at 150 lbs.
Rich I am so jealeous of that Euor Motor. Now get it in there son we are dieing here to see AND hear the all Porsche 914-8. Big flat torgue curve and gobbs of it.
915 trans in that pic.
Modified oil pan is finally installed. New cam, crank, and external oil pump seals installed. Discovered a few problems. the tensioner is siezed! I have to locate a used one ASAP! Engine bar is out for final welding and finishing.

GT lid is almost finished... Mesh is fit. Lid needs paint before final mesh install. My GT style lid is not for cooling. It's to display the cool motor.

My brother's selling his '95 M3 if someone's interested. Good car. Silver. This thread makes me want to build a 4 car garage.
-'Chung
I have a 95 M3 already. (Daytona Violett) Post it in the Classified section. BTW I built a 4 car garage during the time I should have been working on the car. Nice to have the garage but wished the car was done instead.
Body panels pulled off getting ready for the repaint.

cool project! I have always wanted to do a 914 radical project! Now that i got 1 teener i'll have to look somewhere around the pond to find a good canidate for the resurection! Looking forward to meeting you on sat.AL
Top of the motor is on for good! I need a wire diagram and vacum hose diagram real bad! I took pictures but with everthing dirty...

Someone with an early 928 can take a picture of the hose diagram from under the hood.

Thanks, That's a great idea. That's the answer! I'll post over on the 928 BBS. (Ya..right...) BTW guy's and gals. The 928 boards I've found have very little traffic. I have not been able to locate a real active board yet. Anyone with a 928 or 928 interest know of an active BBS?
Thanks for the later model diagram markd@mac.com. I think a few of the hoses are still the same. I'm getting closer.
This is like the original 928 BBS...alot of expertise there. You'll also find alot of talent on the rennlist 928 board. But I'd start here (by the way...928's rock and I'll never sell mine!).

note: be prepared for the onslaught as they all will think it is soooo cool that you are doing this!
Thanks jim912928, I've been out in the shop tonite finishing the welding on the custom cross bar mount. It's nice to loss yourself in your work. I really miss doing this stuff for a living. Great theropy for a high stress day. I didn't realize it was so late. I'll start bombing those guy's tomorrow.

rich,
Just wondering if you can give me the total height available from the crank bolt to the top deck cover. just looking into a few other options and need to know how much room i have available.
Keep up the good work
modified the dipstick tube this weekend. here's the stock one.
Attached image(s)
I purchased a new dip stick and tube for a later 928. But of course they changed the design! So I spread out the opening so the new tub would slide inside. Then I measured the difference in the two dip sticks and added a section of the new tube. The biggest difference is in the length of the handles. I should be able to reach over the cam gear an reach it now without removing the bulkhead panel.
Attached image(s)
finished up the front cross bar, painted and installed it.

Had to extract a broken exhaust stud. I broke a hardened extractor off in the stud. the only method left was to mig a washer to it, then weld a nut to the washer.

Started to figure out the vacum lines with the help of the 928 guys over on the rennlist. The clock is ticking the WWC is coming fast!
rich,
Just wondering if you can give me the total height available from the crank bolt to the top deck cover & from the tranny bell housing to the rear firewall at its shortest point. just looking into a few other options and need to know how much room i have available.
Keep up the good work
Update: fab'd a bracket to move the alternator from the left (shift linkage side) to the right. Had the big Marchal alternator rebuilt today.
The custom 928 flywheel and 914 pressure plate is out getting resurfaced. I bit the big one and had a custom 6 spring and 6 kevlar puck clutch made. I should have all the clutch stuff including a new "T" bearing on monday.
Attached image(s)
Got the 911 starter today! Oklahoma Forgien, $50.00. the tag says 1988 but the solinoid has a Bosch reman sticker on it. So it is probably newer replacement.
Attached image(s)
Rich as you may remember I have a 78 928. If you have the Euro engine pre 84 then you got CIS K jetronic and the 81 vaccuum diagram posted earlier is CIS with Lambda KE jetronic. It's close but the warm up regulator is different. You wont have the same pressure regulator. Control pressure is done by the warm up regulator which will push more gas through the fuel distributor as vaccuum changes.
Don't look at your post often because I just get to many wild ideas.
Pm me and I can get you want else you need pics wise. Tough to see under the spider. I do have the small Bosch CIS maintance tune up book. BTW nice red fuel lines.
Back of throttle body on drivers side. the other one (not circled goes to the passenger side of throttle body below the deceleration valve.
Dude this will never work You need to send me that Euro motor.(too clean) warm up regulator should sit sideways not fore and aft. just my .928 cents worth. I will trade you for a running engine.
Here we go.. Just picked up the flywheel and pressure plate from getting faced.
Attached image(s)
This is what my flywheel looks like from the back. Check out my 6 spring, 6 puck disc! Kevlar material.
Attached image(s)
Looks really cool! Are you gona use a standard cable system for the clutch, or go hydrolic (sp) or some other route?
Eric
this is great, i might actually go into my garage and pull the motor out of my car to do the rotary converion.
you motivate me!.
Painted the engine compartment today. It's ready for the motor!
I picked up the custom flywheel from the engine balancers today. It took very little work to balance.
I went to install the custom disc and realized that the center hub on the 928 side hit the pilot bearing mount. It held the disc away from the flywheel about 3/8 of an inch. I figured I may as well try to fix it or I was going to have to eat the thing.
Well after about 30 minutes on the bench grinder I managed to fix the thing. Here's a photo of the repaired disc next to the stock 928 disc.
The best thing; After assmbling the clutch and installing the transaxle I pulled out the booster charger and cranked the thing over!
The motor and transaxle are no longer a test mule. They are connected with a clutch and the starter cranks it! COOOL!
Attached image(s)
Here is the clutch prior to grinding.

COOL! It's getting closer! Man, it sure will be sweet when that thing runs.
Eric
I wanna see that shiny engine compartment Rich!

Eric <!-- QuoteEnd --></div><!-- QuoteEEnd -->
Ya, Getting closer but not running yet. The motor and transaxle are still on the stand. But at least I know the starter will engauge. With all the mods I made with a bench top drill press and a router I was hanging everything on my reputation. Nothing I've done to this point has been proven. I'm one step closer to success. I am a true DIY'er. I would have done the flywhel fabrication and balancing too if I had a way to spin the thing. Ok, I'm getting carried away here. But I am mildly relieved knowing I managed to pull this one off so far.
Speedo cable back in, New fuel lines in and routed. They are installed and routed together inside shrink tube.
New Clutch cable, throttle cable, go in tonight.
I'm waiting for a conversion kit for the removal of the oil lines and the motor is ready to go in for good.

everything is back in the tunnel. Motor is now on the mounts. Everything clears at the bulkhead. Speedo cable length is fine. Clutch cable is connected.

Rich,
What kind of tranny mounts are those in your photo?
Mike
Most impressive
Can't wait to see the completed pictures...and a video of it running, oooooo. Keep up the good/creative work.
Are you going to have eerie green lights pulsing in the engine compartment and under the rockers?
Okay... under the rockers may be a bit ricey.
-Rusty
We had an exciting night tonight. I started to sort out the flat connector from the relay board to the engine. There is still a bunch of work to do before we can test drive this thing but I tickled the key and the motor cranked over! The thumping low tone of the pistons coming up on compression and wooshing the air out the open exhaust was exhilerating!
I had to order a custom fitting today to relocate the oil pressure sender. It won't be in until next week. So no oil in the engine yet. So if things go well I will be able to fire it up with in the next 7 days.
I'm cutting this real close. But that's all part of it. In the last two weeks before the classic it will be 24-7.
Rich,
I feel I need to note something out in the open. I have been following this discussion for some time. I have to say you are the most industrious person I know of. Everytime I turn around you have completed something major on this car. Talk about rapid milestones! Anyways keep up the good and hard work. I hope the alien project sets a pivot of achievement for others to emulate. Maybe not in the same way, but in the way that nothing is impossible to do with a little imagination, time and a strong determination. It is certainly one of a kind. You have more guts than I, to tackle such a seemly endless vertical challenge. Motivates me to read each post you make on the status of this car. I hope to see this car in person one day

Thanks for the support! I need it. It's hard to go out there every night til midnight. I try not to work past 2:30 am.
If I didn't need money I would do this full time. I can't tell you all how much I enjoy working on cars. Not the greasy stuff. I hate getting dirty. I'm not into the basic bolt up stuff. I really like doing things that are a stretch. To give you an idea, my next conquest is going the be an E30 BMW. To the non BMW guys that's like a 1990 3 series car. I located a complete 1989 BMW 750IL donor. Picture the little 2 door slammed, tucked, and tweeky with that big 12 cylinder stuffed under the hood! Biggest part of that conversion will be the wiring. OBC, duel drive by wire throttle motors (high side of $800.00 ea,), twin AFM, etc.
Ya, I'm car crazzzy!
BTW, I'm going to try to make the MWC this year as well. Maybe we can meet there!
Rich,
I'm pushing to complete also for the MWC this year. I have to build some quick speaker boxes to replace the factory ones on the kick panel. Ya I know, I'm too cheap to spring for the ones on ebay. I have close to $15,000 now in my car and I have to call the dog off the tracks somewhere. Good thing I do everything except body and paint work. My apologies to the person on this board for not purchasing the new speaker panels. They are well worth it no doubt, but I'm a DIY fella. The last thing is have the paint touched up and the engine fine tuned. then off to the show!!!!
Rich,
Great to see you are finally reaching your goal...and fast...I remember when I first got started in the 914's seeing the beginning of your project, and always thinking...will he ever get done with that thing?...but after spending almost 4 years getting my car to where it is I have alot of respect for all your work, and can't wait to see the finished product.
OH and I am sure you have seen this already, but in case you hadn't - e30 w/ v12 goodness:

Yea, I got an e21.....1979 320i.....I was also thinking about a v-8...I just happen to have a ford 302......
I've had those same thoughts, very preliminary measurments indicate it would fit nicely.

Now that we pulled this one completely off topic.
All electrical connections to the engine are finished. Thermo time, cold start, alternator, starter, MSD, Blaster 2 coil, all mounted and done.
I have one more minor setback. I need the harness side of the distributor connector. The 928 has a duel sheilded wire. I have a friend that works at the salvage yard where I purchased the engine clipping one for me. I won't have it until Thursday!
Waiting for my gauges to show. I purchased two VDO temp gauges. One for the engine and one for the radiator.
Also ordered an electric VDO 150 lb. oil pressure gauge. Waiting for a reducer fitting for the oil pressure sensor to arrive.
Still need to wire my VDO volt meter.
I have every thing for the fuel system. I'm starting to connect it all up after work this week. I also need to finish the cooling system this week. including the temp sensor switch for the fan control.
I finished the shift linkage today. installed and adjusted.
Axles ready to go in. Need flange gaskets.
I'm traveling out of town for work next sunday evening, monday, tuesday, returning home wednesday night! I hope to here the engine at least fire before I leave. I couldn't be cutting it closer.
First chance I had to post since last weekend. It turns out I needed a spark box between the distributor and the MDS 6AL. Not simply a Bosch connector. So I couldn't finish the ignition system on Friday night.
I worked on the water connections from the block to the radiator. That's about 70% done now.
I made some calls to a few import car guy's I know on Saturday night. I managed to scrounge a complete Bosch spark box and harnesss from a Volvo. A friend of mine had one and told me he would bring it over on Sunday morning. I worked on the plumbing for the cooling system until 4:00 am on Sunday.
I knew this friend of mine was coming over and didn't want to miss him so I woke up at 6:30 am. I made coffee an went back out to work. About 9:30 am the parts arrived. After about 10 minutes of studying the wire diagram with my reading glasses I made the connections. I twisted the key and we had a huge, FAT, blue lightning bolt flash off the coil wire!!!
I finished the perminent wiring for the spark box. I had to stop working at 3:30pm to get ready for a trip. I spent the rest of the day (arrived at 11:00pm dragging tail!)driving to Des Moine for a mandatory company training.
So I'm currently in Des Moine. if anyone in the club lives here and wants to hang out tomorrow leave a message for me at the down town Marriot. I'm stuck here until Wednesday.
I'm done at noon on Wednesday and will be home by about 7:00pm. I will finish the fuel system and test fire the motor this weekend.
Yah! Go Rich! I want a sound clip when you get it goin.
Sweet, can't wait to see pics of exhaust coming out the pipes.
BTW did Des Moines change it name to Des Moine w/o me knowing it, hehe
the man never sleeps....amazing work and determination....I hope I can have half your passion for my projects in coming years....
There is 24 hours in a day. I'll sleep when I'm dead! I'm going crazy here because I can't work on the car. I gave the kids about 5 big jobs to complete while I'm out of town. I hope they get things done....
Keep on keep in on rich! Many hurdles done with more to go! But I see light at the end of the tunnel or is that a pot'o' gold at the end of the rainbow? You rock man, A man after my own heart! AL
BTW: I spoke with my upholstry guy last night. I think he will be done with my seats. He lives 150 miles away from me but I go right by his place on my trip home from Des Moine! cross your fingers for me!
I'm back home from my trip. No work done on the car since sunday, no shop cleaning done. The kids had a school project they needed to complete. My oil pressure gauge didn't show, and the seats weren't done. I did get to see them in progress. They are going to be outragious! I'm back at it tomorrow after work. I will test fire the motor this weekend. I'll see if I can have the kids do a video clip with sound!
Hey Geoff! Did you send me these? COOOOL! These were waiting for me in my mail!

Ya'll stand back there is a genious in the house. That has got to be the coolest solution to piping I have ever seen. You da man Rich.
The firewall attaches with dzus fasteners?
I filled the cooling system and ran the motor. Fans came on fine. I'm mildly concerned about a small purge from the coolant overflow that occurred just before the fans came on. But the temp gauges (Two, engine and radiator were close to equal at approx. 185 deg.
You had better have some video of the first drive you take in that beast. I love it, and it sounds fantastic! Sounds like you're getting very close. I can't wait to see the finished product.
Yeah Rich when do you think you will be able to take her around the block?
I keep replaying that engine sound myself. Sounds real nice. You could tell it got the right fuel/air mix on the second crank. Rrrrrruuuuummmmmmmmmm. My car will be afraid if it.
Heej Rich,
Good progress on the car man... must be close to a spin around the block
not to distract you from more important issues but flipping throug my magazines with 914 articles I found a german magazine which has an article on a german 914 with a 928 enigne in it.
He put the engine more towards the rear and cut a large piece out of the trunk.
Depending on fifth gear ratio it has a top speed of 240 or 265 kph (150 and 165 mph )
He also welded in a steel roof ( a la 916) to give the car more strength.
sweet looking car... but all text in german.
are you interested in the article? I could fire up the old scanner for this one
just give the word

Jacco, I'd be interested in that story!

Just picked up my seats! I had a great time with my upholstry friend tonight. He let me help! Until you've done this kind of work you will never appreciate how hard it is. He recovered them in pasha inserts and black leather. They are better than perfect!

Rich, Those seats look great. The fabric is a nice link to the 928.
Mike
Rich
Great job, they are going to so cooool in the alien.
Could you please pm or email to me your friends number, I would like to give him a call when I am ready for the reupholster.
Thanks,
Chap
Those seat look to good to sit on. What else do you have plan for the interior?
FYI: I just got home from my out of town trip. I installed the axles and drove the car out into the driveway! It was too late to drive it around the block with open exhaust. But the clutch and shifter worked good so far. Brake pedal seems real low to the floor yet. I'm going to try to use a mitey vac.
Rich,
a ) Those seats are perfect. They are perfect. They are perfect. "Design matters", and you've hit this one square on the head. Did I mention "Design matters?"
B ) I can't wait to see this car. (I'm scrambling airplane reservations to be home for the WCC and I live next door!) This car may well be the definition of the intersection of cool and design. No, I'm not sucking up.
c ) Heck with the car. Meeting you will be more cool.
I'm sure there are a hundred hurdles in front of you -- I wish you the best karma to blow past them all.
kim.
edit: man, I hate the goofy tag processing that makes a into a
Hi Kim,
We need a blushing emocon.... Thanks for the good karma thoughts. I need them. I'n currently pushing an elephant up hill. My uhpolstry friend calls it forced fornication..... We're going to have a great time!
Yes, those are beautiful axles. I already have that picture as one in my screen-saver slideshow.
Thanks for the clarification!
-Rusty
Rich, I love how the seats turned out!
The Pascha design is soooo 928. Absolutely great!!!
Can't wait to see it in real life (just 2 more weeks )
cheers,
Jeroen
Started at 8:00 am today. Repaired a couple of years of damage caused by outside storage during the winter months. (before the hobby shop went up)
Primer is on. I'm tried! heading for bed. It's 3:15 am here. I need to be back at it by 9:00 am...
Well the base coat looks like it's going on ok. But I ran out. The paint supply store didn't put a quart of paint in the box of stuff I purchased last week. I didn't notice until I unpacked the box yesterday. Of course there was no way to get any paint at 10:00 pm on Sunday night. I'm behind schedule big now. I should be checking all the nuts and bolts tonight after work and getting ready to start assemble the interior(including changing the dash pad.) I still need to build a custom exhaust and bleed the brakes. I found a couple of small leaks on my temp sending units I need to address. I'm sure the test drive will be the parking ramp at the Pruneyard!
Rich
The good news about that is there will be lots of people there to help. By the sounds of it there may be a lot of people putting final touches on. Could be kinda fun, a giant 914 work party. No shortage of wrenches or brake pumpers. Somehow, I got a feeling that if you get the pieces there it will get done. Same goes for the rest of the people trying like mad to get things finished.
After 4 days of tourista stuff with the family I know I'll be ready to get dirty and drink some beer.
See ya there
Dave
Here's a couple of pics the kids took last night. Here's a trick for masking the vent. Granted, When I put the car together the first time I installed a screen under the vent. So this may not work for most of you.

BTW: My garage is trashed! I don't have any time to clean it!
Where is your mask? You must be feeling pretty buzzed after all that. I wish I had a facility like that to do my car in. I am going to have to rent a booth to do mine. My water heater is in the garage and would blow up if I tried that. Looks good Rich, I look forward to seeing it at WCC.
mask? Gas is shut off to thw water heater. No pilot light.
Anyone want to watch American Chopper?
Attached image(s)
Clear is on. Now the big push to assemble this thing. Lots of fabrication left. Complete interior, exhaust system, etc. and maybe do a test drive before it has to hit the trailer. Maybe...
Attached image(s)
Looking real good Rich! I believe you'll make it!!
Do the essentials that you need your tools for Rich...we can help hang lights and door panels here...
Bowlsby has a good point! Get her roughed in and the rest can be finished at the WCC over a few beers. And I bet there will also be volunteers for the test drive part as well . GO RICH GO! Damn I wish I was going!
I have a crew coming over tonight to start buffing and doing final assembly. Still missing my tac.... I need to check on that. I found a parts car with nice trim cards and a spare tac if mine doesn't arrive in time. It won't be a converted 8 cylinder one but it will fill the hole in the dash. I will be WFO this week.
Good Job Rich!
Test drove the car today! No bumpers, plates, rear lid, and open exhaust!!! WOO HOOOO! I drove it about a mile during my lunch hour to a friends shop to have the brake system vac'd. Ran great! shifted good, a little clutch chatter from the 6 puck disc but I expected that. The best part is I now have good brakes with a nice high peddle. Back up on jack stands with the tires out to get balanced and an all out assault on the interior and a fast buff job. Still need to paint the bumpers.
Still need to fab the mufflers and exhaust system.
Rich, you are simply amazing, i am quite embarrassed in the fact that my car isn't finished yet and it's basicly stock, not some one-off custom job like yours !!!!!!
Rich, you RULE!
When are you planning on leaving?
(I guess it's quite a trip from Minesota to CA)
cheers,
Jeroen
Wow, I'm very impressed, cant wait to see the finished product!!!

Sometime between saturday night and monday. Monday is the drop dead date. I now have a co-driver. I had a friend offer to drive out with me. He's not staying for the event though. He's on a plane home thursday night. I'm leaving as soon as the car is finished enough to look somewhat complete.
I have a loaner welder in the shop so I was able to work on the exhaust. It's almost done.

Words fail me Rich. I can't believe what you've managed to accomplish in such a short time period. Way to go!
That exhaust looks sweet!!! As does the rest of the car. I love it!!
Rich,
You are the MacGyver of the 914 Club. "Oh, they don't make one of those? I'll make it myself"
Un-f-ing believable.
Oh my god that is sweet. I really want to hear that motor with those muffs. Sir you are the best fabricator around. You make them boys on TV look like amateurs. Plus it seems you are a one man show with a few kids to do the cleaning and stuff. DO I smell a reality TV show about 914-8 all Porsche conversions.
I'm next. DO mine Do mine. Got both cars ready to go. Need to go to Duluth see relatives anyway.
You guy's crack me up! LMFAO! I'm really tired today! Went to bed at 4:30 am back up at 7:00 am. I'm heading out soon the do it again!
In case anyone is interested.. Changed the dash pad. Installed the Pasha accent on the dash face.

Keep on going rich! I wish I could make the wcc so I could meet you and your awsome creation! AL
Rich,
So I've been on the road for a week and completely out of touch -- Dude, what you do in 6 days rocks! (I started my /6 today thinking "I hope it keeps running for a week")
Definitely looking forward to the impending arrival!
kim.
Love the way you used the same material from the seats on the dash. Are you going to do the same to the doors? That would look very cool.
Or at least the gauge portion of the center console? Hope you have enough "tablecloth" left!

My upholstry guy is a perfectionist. he matched the pattern at each pleat. this uses up a lot of material. So I only had enough for the dash.
I'm done! I'm om the road in the early am. One more teaser for ya. Anyone want to caravan call me? Call me monday evening If your west of me.
Attached image(s)
Call me. I'd like to caravan with you from Vegas. If I get there early I want to have an Alien landing at Renegades' shop! Talk about a photo opt!
Hi Rich,
so... what's happing with Alien at the moment...
How did it handle the trip to WCC?
does it live up to expectations... or is there still a lot of tweaking to do.
just curious to know the project status.

if I've missed a post where you talked about everything I just asked... my bad, but please point me to it
love to know.
Looks like progress report time. Over 650 miles on the car now. Other than the axle bolt loosing (I discovered this at the WCC AX) I discovered I connected the Marchal alternator (built in regulator) from the 928 through the 914 regulator. In other words I had the alternator double regulated. The charging system died the day I arrived home. After a long distance consultation with my friend Pat in Clevland ( bosch guru, Saab fan donator) I discovered my over sight. I removed the regulator from the 914 relay board and reconnected the 928 alternator direct. WHAM 13.5 volts!
The throttle cable is only opening the throttle body open about 2/3 wide. (Like it matters...) It's a geometry thing I won't be fixing until I pull the motor out this fall, I skipped lots of detail work in the mad rush to finish the car for the WCC, I'll have all winter to correct this. For now I have enough throttle to spin the tires at will.
I adjusted the clutch cable and now it doesn't grind going into reverse. (I hope it's still considered a true 914 Dave )
The car developed a miss at low throttle. I discovered the timing belt streched and needed to be re-adjusted. I think it may be tuneup time too. I'm running the same cap, rotor and spark plugs that came on the motor when I picked it up at the salvage yard. I also have a cracked spark plug insulator. My free Saab fans are not up to the in town work. I'm ordering a couple of new fans soon. For now the car is back in the shop resting from the wild weekend on the Gold Coast. So far the shake down is going well. All the problems have been very minor. Stay tuned for future updates.
Some new developments. I found the miss. #2 plug is oil fouled. I've got a upper end rebuild ahead of me this winter.
Attached image(s)
oh joy........I take it the motor has to be removed for that???
This concerns me a little more. I'm not sure where this oil is coming from. I'm hoping not from the head gasket. I'mm going to clean it off and watch for fresh leaks.
Attached image(s)
Oh... and some new damage to repair.... It happened in the driveway...There were tears and sobbing going on and they weren't mine. I hate that stuff. Turns my heart into jelly. Don't ask.... It's not as bad as the offenders rig.
Lock is pasted over and the tail light panel is bent alot.
Attached image(s)
that sucks!
(understatement of the day/week/month/year)
cheers,
Jeroen
here's the offender....
Attached image(s)
Good thing it was the bumper not the trailer hitch that hit it. Take that hitch off until you need, you're just asking for trouble there.
I'm resurrecting this old thread for some new developments. some may have read I had a bit of a problem on the way home from the MWC. I had a stray piece of metal jamb my oil pump. The pump is driven via the big belt. It had a squealing sound, I stabbed the clutch peddle and the motor died. Maybe I was fast enough to save any damage. I just located a replacement pump and sent a pay pal off tonight. I should have a replacement pump soon. I need to install the replacement pump and see if I have any other damage. I'll keep you all posted.
Stray piece of metal? Damn where do you suppose that came from. Never had my motor apart so I can't say that there is a screen on the suction in the sump. Good thing you are a master fabricator so you can make one. Did it chew up the timing belt enough to make it skip?? Hope not as that Euro Motor is the interferance varity.
I had to drag this old thread out of the list. I took the Alien for a ride tonight. I have never really jumped on it yet. I mean I have shifted it up a little and tossed it around some but tonight I jump on it getting on the freeway. I just had to tell you guys it was awesome! The best part is nothing broke! I'm really looking forward to the WCC 05!
I'm recovering photos lost in a hard drive crash. I'm going through this thread and copying the photos of the build. I sent the hard drive out and had a distructive recovery done but there were many bad sectors the didn't retreive. Anyone have any photos of the Alien they would like to share post them here. I'd like to save a copy. Word to the wise. Save your valuable memories on some form of media or print the photos on paper.
Rick..I have a few from the Midwest Classic and the Fall Foilage. If you want to shoot me a pm with your email ID I'll send you the larger higher res ones that I can't post here.

I have a couple at home from MWC04. I'd be happy to send them to you Rick.

I think my daughter took a bunch at the MWC too. I will look when I get home.
BTW, she is only 9, so they might be pictures of the grass and the last 6 inches of the bumper. Would those be ok?
Rick,
I hadn't read on this thread since it was but one or two pages long... before the WWC.
HOLY COW..
I knew you went to the WWC.. (a little bit jealous)
But what I didn't know is how fast and how much ground you covered to get there..
I'm blown away..
great job

I knew Brent and brant were gonna eventually follow each other here.
Rick, I just sent you an email about pics I took at the WCC in 04, and a GMAIL invite to tranfer the somewhat hi res pics.

Betty loves your car, but she is nervous about the engine so close to your back....
"Wow.... that interior is totally cool! You HAVE to do that with Igor... except with red and black checks!!!!!!!!!!
It looks like he basically lost the depth of the back pad in the passenger compartment. That's sitting a little too close to spinning, ouchy engine things for my peace of mind. Who needs a heater, he's practically strapped to the toasty engine! Gives calling a 914 a "go-kart" a whole new meaning!"
I explained that there was a removable firewall... here is her reply...
"Oh, the panel would make me feel better but what would happen if he got rear ended by anything heavier than an Isetta?"
Will the engine move if the car is hit.. or is it mounted to the factory mounts?

Actually she would probably love a ride in the Banana....
Please.. don't let her drive it.. then "I" would be forced to build her one!!!!
Clay, We need to do one with the engine on your avatar!
I actually saw the engine case for a 917/30 at the MUSR a couple years ago. That sucker is long. If you can find one with transmission, we can do it, but we are going to have to really stretch the hell out the engine compartment!!!

"Wow" is an understatement.
I've just read this entire string and uhhhhh, "Wow".
I must say that I do like the showy stuff almost as much as the go fast stuff.
Working that square stock into a water return??? Who would have thunk it??
Black on black is beautiful especially with the alien-like cloth work.
Priority list:
1. Better paying job.
2. Better/larger garage.
3. Hang on to the understanding g-friend who just wants me to be happy.
I'm inspired. Thanks.
Wow! Someone dug this one out of the closet.
But it is a good thread!
Well I'm dragging this thread out of the deep dark black hole about 200 pages back.
I have an update. Most of you all know I purchased a salvage yard motor am hoped for the best. For the most part it has worked out well as a test mule and I'm happy about the purchase. Since the cars debut at the WCC "04" I put about 10,000 on it. I had a feeling there were some fairly some serious internal problems during my trip out to the WCC "05" I was consuming fuel like I was towing a tanker truck behind me. I could hear a miss and the car felt like it was under powered. But I didn't want to disappoint you guy's and gal's and bail out of the event. So I made it out and back at the risk of loosing the motor. I didn't talk about it much but I was pretty worried. Things turned out fine thanks to good friends along the road. I was really hoping I could get the summer out of the car before starting on a full on assault but I can't ignore the way the car runs any longer.
I started planning a rebuild when I returned home. I brought the Alien to a good friend I trust for a pre-rebuild diagnostic once over. As it turned out I have one cylinder at 75 psi! the others are all under 150 psi on a compression test. That would explain the fuel consumption as this would make the CIS go wacky Tomorrow is leakdown time. then I'll know more.
So here goes.... I wonder just how fast this beast will be without a sick motor? Anyone need a depends?
I'll post my updates here.. stay tuned!
You ain't shit if you don't put your spare in!
(just for the time being)
It's a worthy project, it's much fun watching you do it all.. g'luck!

Careful with those exhaust studs and cam tower cap screws I now have the tool from 928 motorsports sells to remove the cap screws if you want to use it.

Have you talked to Kim Crumb? He used to be the PCA tech person on 928's He lives in Minneapolis. He has tracked 928s for years. If there is a local (MN) person he would know......
OK! Here goes! I'm dragging this old build thread out of the dark depths of the BBS. I just called Brad Mayeur and scheduled an appointment to have my transaxle rebuilt. I'm pulling the motor and trans axle this weekend. The clock is ticking for the WCC "06" road trip! I will have a female co-pilot this year... she's really cute too!
Wicked! I can't wait to see the progress and what the inside of your car looks like Rick!
Good luck with that.
My racing buddies keep pushing me to put one of them 928 motors in my car for Autocross. I just don't read the Street mod ruling the same. Anyway Maybe I'm not whipping them by enough seconds already.
If anyone can hook you up with parts it's Mark @ 928INTL. My favorite Quote from him is You want HP send me money. the more money the more Horse Power. Pretty simple.
Hmm Who does that remind us of...

My life has become consumed by my job. I have had little to no time to devote to anything. Even when I'm not working all I think about is how much I have to do.
The motor is still in the car. I'll know more in a few weeks.
I'm looking for a new job too. I can't continue to work the kind of hours I do for nothing. I'm too valuable and so is my time. I have some really nasty things to say but I'll refrine.

I pulled the driveline friday night, loaded the transaxle in my trunk, and hit the road at 2:00 am saturday morning for Brad Mayeur's place. The drive was 9 hours straight. I had a very short visit with Brad. My son Aric was my co-pilot. He has a friend that lives in Peoria he wanted to visit. Brad is working on a top secret project car. ( well maybe not so secret but it makes for good reading! ) I'll keep you all posted on the prognosis.
The motor goes on the stand today.
Right on RIck! I really look forward to meeting you and seeing the car in Portland this summer!!
I'll post pictures later, but I pulled the left cam tower off tonight. I found a broken valve spring on # 8 intake valve. More news later, I've got to get something to eat.

While it is on the stand can you get photos of how you got rid of the tube that runs down the front of the block for oil fill, also by the oil filter where you moved the sender to.

I see you can weld alumimum.
What's your desirable amps setting?
I wanna do alum. but know nothing.
I'v a nice welder with argon, but the machine rated 50 amps,
and this house has only 60!
Kinda guessing I shouldn't need too much, for the fact, alum. has low melting point.
Looks good - dig the pictures. Like Tom says - keep up the good fight.
I was wondering also if you'd considered getting some headers on there??
Rick! Nice work. It looks familiar. I lave 928 engines!
Majkos, Aluminum takes a AC capable TIG to weld well. It takes lots more amperage because AL dissipates heat so well. Visit a local welding shop to pick up some scrap AL to practice on. Most hardware store AL is anodized which makes it almost impossible to weld successfully.
Man Rick, that motor looks to be in good shape.
I remember that piece of metal that got stuck in the pump. It all makes sense now. Amazing it made it's way all the way down to the sump and back up the pickup tube.
Nice work
Tom

The stock units made more power on the big end. |
Just an update on the project.
My transaxle is at Brad Mayuer's place getting the "HB" gear and having the other gears moved around for better shift points.
I just received confirmation from Phamtom Grip. They are builing my unit. In their email they stated it will take a couple of day before they ship it as this is not an off the shelf item. I'm stoked!
BTW: Brad will be installing the Phantom Grip for me also. He will be the go-to-guy in the future for this mod. I'll let you know what we think after we (Brad and I) have a chance to take a serious look at it.
I have two places selected for my cylinder head repair. I may be dropping them off over the weekend.
I still have several issues to resolve but I'm on track so far.
God, I love teardowns....
So, where did the "other" 928 set-up go to?
Not that I'm interested...
Hope all is well with you and the family, Rick

Spoke with Brad Mayeur last night. My transaxle is done. New HB gear, 3,4, 5 spacing changed, new syncro's.
Brad gave me an awesome deal! Anyone that is contemplating a rebuild and doesn't have the time or tools, see him!
BTW: I bailed on the Phantom Grip. As far as I can tell, the guys are more interested in ricers that Porsches.

Transaxle arrived today! I've been so focused on work I forgot I had Brad install a Billet intermediate plate! Cool!
BTW: anyone not skilled on repairing a transaxle send it to Brad! Word!

In the crate -o-parts there was a set of the later foctory stainless tube exhaust manifolds for the SOHC engines. The local 928 guys told me that these are better than the cast ones for a slight power boost. And after all isnt that what life is all about
The later tubular units AFAIK are for the intro year model 1986 32V engine (2 bolt head) which may /may not fit the earlier engine (16V). The later 1987 928 32V engine (3 bolt head) will def. not fit onto the 16V heads. The guy didn't lie to you about a slight HP increase over the cast units...we only make +14% HP over the later Porsche manifolds as opposed to +22% over the cast. If you are hurting for space/ tight fit, my suggestion is to go "Extrudehone" and clean out a ton of breathing space out of the cast manifolds Free HP

Rick,
I finally got to read this whole thread. I can see that you need talent and resources like yours or about $100,000 of spare ca$h to duplicate what you've done.
Terrific job. This thread should be resurrected on a regular basis. Great reading for newbies on the board like myself.
Cheers,

Rick, you are the man.
If I ever do a watercooled engine, i'll do a 928.

I pulled this back up from the black hole about 300 pages back. I started out repairing my broken engine over a year ago. I no longer have the job that was stealing my life. I'm hoping to start a new job of some kind soon. In the mean time, I'm doing a rusto on a friends 280SL to help pass the time.
I'm near ready to start putting things back together. I'm ordering a set of rings this week. The heads are back and look great.
i will need a new clutch disc and pressure plate. The 1.7 unit didn't have the clamping force I needed. I smoked my 6 puck clutch in about 6000 miles. (no big surprise there)
So, what is everyone using with there V8's?
I need details. part #s sources, and most importantly price. (remember I'm not working)
Rick, didn't the 928s use a twin disc clutch setup, more clamping pressure and smaller in diameter....
Yes, That's what was on my engine when I got it. It uses a interemdiate plate. I didn't think there would be enough room inside the bell for this type of setup. Then I guess the 928 guys pull them and change up to the later version with the single disc because of the cost to set the duel disc up properly. So, the short answer...
Hey Rick,
I hope to see your monster sometime this summer???
Bill
I think the world would end if Bill's and Rick's cars were within 10 feet of each other!
Oh ya, Clutch question. V8 guy's, whatcha using. brand, part number, price.
Have you tried renegades hybrids site, or kennedy engineering???
Rich
Just ordered a Kennedy stage 2 pressure plate and kevlar clutch. Also ordered a new set of wheels from Performance Products. 16" X 8" and 16" X 9" Fuch copies. And new tires to go with em. Yokohoma Avid V4S 225/55/16 fronts and 255/50/16 rears. Also ordered some 4130 tube to start a sway bar project. The Atomic ramble is just around the corner.
You have created a whole new level of sickness, covetousness and crazyness. That is insane! Freekin genius! Freekin freeky deeky coolio!
Seasons come and go, come and go, come and go..... and my car is just parts in boxes....If there is a God please let the re assembly begin.....
Nice to see your getting the Alien off of the autopsy table. Ill do my best to coax the body shop to get mine painted.
He is getting close to 2nd coat of primer.....The shop owner has been having personal difficulties which i had sensed all along. He separated from his wife a few weeks ago.
I am being supportive because he is a friend and ive been there done that. My car will get done and he is really trying to give me great paint job. Sometimes waiting is better as it allows all of the shrinking to occur and give it time for the solvents to escape.
My plan was to join Rick and the gang for the A-bomb rumble. I haven't made any reservations as I am totally up in the air on this one.
I BET ANYTHING THAT RICK WILL GET IT DONE! "Go Alien"
but no rain this time... lets get those beasts together.
And chappy, i'm sure there's a gang around if you want help with reassembly.
paul
Wow very cool project. I bet it will be a blast to drive.
You going to ude the fancy red powdercoated cam towers and the engraved adapt. plate when it goes back together?
Im going to be nervous as hell putting the thing back together while not trying to scratch or damage the paint and all of the new trim.
Put my Ebrake stuff together today, now I need those control arms still attached to the car and do the needle bearing install also.
I am getting everything ready all I need is the car back, I am sure I can re assemble it all in a week of hard careful work...
Rick has a house full of helpful elves I doubt he will have any trouble getting the Alien to live again.
The engine is back in. fresh 300+ hp 928 euro spec S engine, Brad Mayeur built 901 with HB 5th gear and billet intermediate plate, Kennedy stage II with a Kevlar disc. I should be able to light it up Sunday night. Stay tuned...
Nice Work Rick.
Just dry fired it to make sure everything was connected correctly. It sounds awesome without exhaust! Pegged my 150 psi gauge. that's a good sign. I still have the Bar sender connected to a US spec VDO gauge. Still need to replace the sender but it is as it was with the old engine. All looks good. No leaks that I've seen yet. Now I can finish it up.
I still need to fix the exhaust, install the axles, and fill and bleed the cooling system. The test drive will be tomorrow.
Test drive tommorrow? Hey......you have patched the alien back together to invade far away places once again! AWESOME! Glad to hear it. I want a ride when I come up into your neighborhood in June for Grandmas marathon.
Bill
Hiya Rick...
Can we get a quick teaser photo of the engine in the car
SWEET!
I can't wait to see pics! Great job (again) Rick!
Throttle linkage pics. See the tube with bearings inside on the back of the engine.
The cable pulls a cam that pushes a linkage that pulls a cable. The linkage rod has sperical bearings.

OK, It's running. I need to put the timing light on it. I drove it out of the garage onto the driveway. It's ready to run to the exhaust shop. I had to cut the lead pipes off the twin muffler setup because I changed to later style exhaust manifolds. They were a little different and the exhaust wouldn't bolt up anymore.
Here's what's left:
Tune in the CIS
Replace the cap
Time it.
Fix the exhaust
Install the 180 lb rear springs.
Finish and install my 1" 4130 sway bar project
Repair some body damage and paint...
Not sure I'll have time for the paint work before the Atomic Ramble. The painting is last. I may get to it, I may not..
Oh ya, I left chappy a rumbling voice mail when I lit it up!
Seeing the Alien again is one of the BIG reasons I'm considering making the drive to AR.
...and there was much rejoicing...
[quote name='McMark' date='May 12 2007, 10:23 PM' post='899938']
You know if there were any way I could make both events I'd be there.
I'm at least flying the WCR link in support. I really hope you can make the trip Mark.
BTW all, I wrecked my lower back bending over the flare working on the car. I can hardly walk today much less drive the car. just a short term thing.
Up date for anyone interested. I have a fried relay board that is keeping me from tuning the car. It failed at the fuel pump relay that also powers my AAV and WUR.
This was a contributing factor (not the whole reason) I missed the Atomic Ramble. I've had limited time to work on the car now. My work schedule and my electrical issues now caused me to miss the WCR.
I figured I would do a wire around the relay board thing to at least try to tune out some of the other things until I have time to get a replacement board.
edit: I just can back from a 60 mile drive. It's amazing what a Bosch relay from the local FLAPS and a foot of wire can cure. The fuel pump is now working off the relay and AAV and WUR now have power. I'm confident I will have a base line for a tune up this week. The throttle cable is sticking a little yet but when it's not the idle is now steady and smooth. No pulsing or gas fumes beltching out the exhaust. I still need to recheck the timing, reset the air screw, then hook up an O2 sensor and adjust the CIS sensor plate.
I now have my sights set on the RRC.
Keep it up Rick, you will get er done. Sorry to hear you missed the AR. Hope to see you out and about soon.
Hey Rick, hope all is well. Any thing new to report on the Alien? Also, did you make or buy your engine to transimission adapter? As much as I keep telling myself no, no, no..., I'm starting to think this might be a project I would like to take on, including trying to get the engine to run on 48IDA webers. Might be the Thanks.
I've been working out of town for a couple of months only coming home on weekends. A couple of weeks ago I spent about 15 minutes working on the car. After a test drive the engine developed a noise that I thought was a lifter. No big deal, I have some spares and it's not that bad of a fix. I got home yeasterday late. I thought I would steal a few minutes to go out to the garage to start the Alien and move it out in the driveway to shoot a quick photo for Howard on this 914 day. The lifter noise wasn't too bad a couple of weeks ago so I figures it wouldn't hurt to back it out of the garage for a simple picture. I started the engine and it had something break in what sounded like the valves. I think it dropped a seat. I was violent enough to kill the engine! I was standing there staring in disbelief when I heard the sound of water trickling into the oil pan.
The only way I could feel sicker right now is iffin I was bigger....
Sorry to hear that.
! Don't give up!
Major bummer! Sorry to hear this. Stick with it.
Rick, that sucks! I am sorry to hear about that. You are right, it does not sound good. You were my inspiration to get my car done and do it right. My engine wont be ready till fall sometime and that is only if I can come up with the money to pay for it. I will have to be satisfied with just getting the body and paint all done and then put the car all back together without the engine till I can afford to get it done. Hopefully it picks up at the port soon.
Must be a Government plot to cover up Alien existence.
Hang in there Ric I believe.
Aw man, so sorry!
jeez Rick, that sucks.
Don't know if it helps, but at least you will know you are not alone:
This kid up in Boulder that I know thru a mutual friend just built a full custom stroked turbo motor for his Volvo (I don't know why either ), bolted it all in, and it lasted about 10 minutes before it siezed. Without understanding all the external oiling crap on that engine, the short version I got is that he ran the oil backwards against some sort of one-way pressure driven valve. The engine showed plenty of oil pressure because the pump was pushing a brick wall, but not a drop actually circulated. Smoked the custom crank, pistons, etc.
I had a 408" stroked 351 Windsor that I custom built last 5 minutes and chew up the distributor gear while running all the muck thru the crank and rod bearings. After new bearings and a 10/10 grind on the crank, it made it 7 minutes before the same thing. Turns out that previously the block had worn where the distributor gear rode, so the cam/dist gears never meshed right and would never match. I sold all the custom stuff I had for it and took about a $2500 loss to stick the stock 351w back in and say "F" it. It was only about the 400th stroked Windsor I had built for the race shop I worked at the time and of all of them to have an issue it was mine
So I've been there, done that. Hard to not just and say F to the whole thing I suspect, but best I can say is hang in there. I think you have a pretty cool car so tear it down, curse a LOT (I find it helps) and then piece it back together.
Sorry Rick! Man that thing just eat's it's share of motors doesn't it.
You still have the other spare engine over in the corner dont you? Get that exhaust mani. stud out and bingo back in business.
You are still our leader.......................leader!
SOunds like we're both having fun
My motor bit it in the 914, so I bought a 96 Mazda, and now the water pump died.

super trader Byron has five engines 600.00 each;
I don't know what happened inside my engine yet. Still working out of town and haven't had time to pull it.
But I located a parts engine tonight. I'm not sure it's a usable core yet. I have a friend with a engine he purchased several years ago from Renegade Hybrids. I think it's an 83 but I don't remember. He told me it sat so long in the shop it's stuck now and he can't turn it over.
So it's mine if I come and get it. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
I'm thinkin I hope it at least has a good 4.7 block. It was an auto car... maybe thrust issues... I'll know more tomorrow. (block # at least)
Thanks for the lead Jeff! I may need some options.

We have never met, but we both have used Brad M for work on our cars, and i have followed this link with interest. There looks to be a donor car available here in Chicago if interested - only $900.

Damn Rick, sorry to here about your motor.
Time for an update:
My engine dropped a valve, cracked the block, bent a rod, punched a hole in my euro "S" head and pretty much destroyed itself.
I had the head repaired. Over the holiday weekend I worked on the Alien Autotopsy. Here's a couple of photos.
Started with two on the opporating table.. ended with one on the gurney..

WOW!
Hey Rick,
Have you turned everything over to see if anything hits? Best of luck, and hope you can still get it out on the roads before the ice and snow start piling up.
We need another update...
Bill
I've followed some of the bad luck, so best of luck this time!
Are the head cores hard to find? Is there a specific reason why you didn't just get two cores with less mat'l removed for the rebuild opposed to fixing the one that was damaged? I am thinking you could find a set with less removed and then the thicker gasket would put it back near stock location for the cam timing issue...
Additionally, what is the affect of not having the offset keys? Are the cams retarded or advanced? With stock cams and 11:1, if it is slightly retarded you might just run it that way (retarded less than 6deg) cuz that will bleed off some cylinder pressure, and with stock cams, maybe pick up some top end power. We all know the teener doesn't need the low end power I have a rather wicked race cam in mine, so retarding actually hurt my power because I bled off too much pressure, but small cams I have found like a little retarding if you want to slightly increase top end.
You may have covered the reason already, but I am too lazy to read all of it
This has been a long saga this summer. The trouble started before the last rebuild. I had a head gasket failure and a broken spring. This caused seat damage in one cumbustion chamber. I had the head repaired and cut. When I assembled the engine I may have had one cam advanced causing a valve collision or I could have just had a valve stem break, or I could have damaged a ring during install... Who can really know.
Anywho.. I brought my heads in to a head specialty shop to have them evaluated. The head guy told me it would cost a minimum of $ 900.00 plus parts to repair the damaged head. When I asked him how much these heads were cut he didn't know... He didn't even really know how to check them. I told him to box them up and I would come get them.
Now, an uncut 928 head is 24mm measured off a boss on either end of the head. Mine were in the neighborhood of 23.4 to 23.6mm. (one was cut like a wedge...could have been like that before the rebuild) That is in spec as you can use a 1.4mm gasket opposed to a 1.0mm gasket to bring the specs close to stock.
I figured I'd get a unmolested set. These are not easy to find or cheap when you do. I sourced a set of heads from a very reputable 928 source. They hit my AMEX for (are you sitting down) $ 1000.00. I brought these heads into my local Chevy guy machine shop with all the 928 head info I could gather. They measured the replacement heads and discovered they were at 23mm, needed intake guides and a couple of valves, and a resurface. I shipped them back for a refund and had my heads fixed. My heads are now 23mm, (at where the replacement heads measured)
BTW: For the guys that don't know, My engine is a euro spec "S" engine. It's factory rated at 300hp. Stock compression is 10:1 the cams are "S" cams, the throttle body is way larger that US spec engines as well as the inside diameter of the intake runners, the intake and exhaust ports are larger, the combustion chambers are smaller and the valves are bigger. The heads and intake are very desirable in 928 circles.
It cost me $ 770.00 including the welding repair of a very bad hole punched through the intake seat by the exhaust valve stem, new intake guides and 5 valves. The work looks great!
BTW: The complete gasket plus the added cost for the thick head set, rod bearings, Loctite case sealant and stuff were over $ 800.00.. This is not a Chevy kids.
Damn straight aint no chebby for them bucks.
OUCH Rick... :insertmoneyflyingoutofthewalletsmilie:
For future reference (hope this is nt needed)
944 heads fit too. and they have even better porting.
Them Porsche V-8's sure are sexy compared to American Iron.
Keep it coming together Rick, you have a one a million car for sure.
Not chain
Belt. at the time of design it was the longest in history.
I sometimes miss my 928. Like everytime I see a Mustang being an ass and needed a whoopin.
FYI: Time to bump this thread. It's been awhile.
I purchased a set of 32 valve 5.0 pistons that have been fly cut for the euro "S" 16 valve heads.
As soon as they get here. I'm bringing them down to the machine shop with one of my 4.7L blocks. I'm having the block bored out and the pistons fit.
This is what the 928 guys call a Hybrid. It consists of the 5.0L short block with the euro "S" heads, cams, spyder, and throttle body. The engine will be over 10/1 compression and according the what I've read these engines fully dressed with A/C power steering, ect are 350 HP. This is a 50 HP gain over my euro spec "S" engine.
Am I stoked? Ya, i'm stoked!
You should be! Post pictures when they come in...
Holy crap Rick! That is going to be one crazy ride.
Your catching up, one of these days were actually going to get to drive these ridiculous things.
I was shocked when DHL rolled into the driveway on Saturday with my pistons! Woo Hoo! They were playing catch up because of the snow storm we had on Friday.
I going to contact US Chrome in Green Bay. They bore 928 blocks and coat the cylinder with Nickasil. I won't need the Nickie treatment but they are at least familiar with boring Rynolds 390. I'm working in Milwaukee this coming week. If they can do the job I may bring the block and pistons with me and deliver the block to Green Bay. We shall see..
Time for an update to this long journey. Some my know I broke a head stud while attempting to prep my block for boring. Here's the link for that nightmare!
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=83351&st=20 T
The the jury is still out deciding the fate of this block. I hope to know soon.
I discussed the block boring with US Chrome in Green Bay. They only do Nickisil and don't have the tools for the special lapping the Alusil blocks require.
So if I get the broken bolt out of the block I will have my local guy do the boring.
Not much to report except it may snow this weekend, again... may 2, and still crap for weather.
I've exhausted everything I can do to remove the broken stud from my spare block for now. Maybe the machine shop can get what's left out some day. I pulled the engine out of my car and tore it down. I found a galled cylinder wall and broken piston. After I dropped the valve in my 4.7 "S" engine, I purchased two used pistons and reassembled the engine. I think one of the used pistons I purchased was cracked or somehow damaged.
Here's the block.
I think this block can still be bored from 4.7 to 5.0. So, I'm back to extracting the studs. I have all but one removed. It's really stuck and I'm working on it slowly. If it breaks, I'm screwed. This is my last block.
Edit: up date: I just removed the last stud from my "S" block. I'm sending this one to the machine shop tomorrow.
I was gonna vote that you go back ti drilling and tapping, just go all the way up the the inner thread dimenion of the hole.
Then, worst case is you run a real tap in there to clean up the threads.
Seems like there is a material mismatch between the type of steel alloy and the aluminum that created a pretty stubborn connection.
Rich
Alien update. It's been awhile.
I still have a block at the machine shop. They will be boring it out from 4.7 to 5.0 With my 300 hp euro spec "S" heads and spyder this is an easy 50 HP gain.
The used pistons I purchased were not the best, so I have been searching for better ones. I just received 5 more used ones from another great 928 guy. I dropped them off at the shop today. So with any kind of luck I'll have a block in a couple of weeks.
Stay tuned.
I think we've been abducted or are in some kind of time warp...
Funny, our threads have a zillion views and neither of us have a car that runs. Ha.
OMG! Sandy and I are LOA's OFF Hey!
Okay... I just read throught this entire thread. A 'normal' person might ask why would anyone put themselves through something like this. And the mere fact that they have to ask that, is reason enough why they will never understand. I fully "get it". Keep up the good work. Your perserverence will pay off, and we will all rejoice.
Mine runs. Sort of.
Is the midwest some kind of black hole for mutant 914's-
A your 928 powered car.
Chappy's amazing flat 6 turbo.
Bill's LS1 v8.
My turbo type IV. (sure, you can't turbo a 914, yah right)
Hmmm...........
Just an FYI: I see Paul is getting closer, and chappy has his car running now, so I'm feeling kind of sorry for myself. So, I went to the machine shop to see if my block was done. It ws bored out from 4.7 to 5.0 but I still need to have valve reliefs cut in 3 pistons. I'm getting closer.
ottoX914, cool project!
3mm = 0.118" in diameter, which means wall thickness is decreased 1.5mm = 0.059".
We just had another hail storm here last week. Needless to say I am now up to my ass in work again. I honestly could see the light of day before the storm. Oh well, I guess there's worse problems to have.
I spent as much time on the engine as I could today. I needed a mental break and this was a nice diversion. All the studs were removed from the block by the machine shop with one of those stud extractor tools that crush the threads where the nuts thread on to secure the ladder. (the ladder is the bottom half of the block) I started to run a chaser over the damaged threads. After trying a couple of the nuts on the chased threads I could still feel the damage on the threads.
I decided to remove the studs from a junk block I have. I use the double nut method and heat the block to release the locktite. This took about 3 hours. So, I still need to chase the locktite left in my new block, but I hope to have a short block by the end of next weekend.
BTW: I still don't have my three pistons back from the guy that is supposed to fly cut the valve reliefs.
Dont ya hate the waiting kids......... Me and millions like me want proof of the Alien's existence only then can we be sure it is amongst us.
Project file#914-Alien- X file.....
Damn good to see YOU finally working on the car again.
I trimmed up my fenders today...laid out a box beam for the tops of the fenders...then roofed the house a bit more.
Looks like two more bundles and I am DONE....yipee (damn tall ass house...what were they thinking)
Rich
90% of my parts are here. I brought my crank in to have it checked for straightness and have it polished. I was concerned about the crank after dropping a valve and cracking a block. That's alot of pressure and force on the crank. It checked out fine. I'm waiting for three pistons to be notched. The machinist promised saturday or sunday this week. He works a day job and does custom balancing and custom machining part time. The head gaskets and head studs are shipped.
tick tock tick tock...let me know if you'd like a hand up there in DLH. I am a good light holder and tool gopher. Hell...I'd probably just get in the way. LOL
Ok, the Crank is in the block and four pistons are in. I'm still waiting for the shop to notch 3 pistons. I have a few more things I can bolt on like the water pump and flywheel. I need my pistons now.....

Man I love the 928 engine. It is just pure art and DAMN sexy.
I guess I should post an update. Turns out I have a broken cam. The cam has a long bolt that threads deep inside the cam. The cam cracked and the stub rotated causing the cam to be out of phase. This caused the valve to collide with the pistons and cracked the block. Not seeing this problem I tried to build a new engine. I bolted on the broken cam and destroyed a second engine before the thing even started. If I hadn't caught this I would have has a third broken engine.
These are unobtainioum euro "S" cams. The best price I found was 950.00 for one cam and I have to wait for it to be cut. I tried to send a US cam and my broken cam to Berry Cams here in MN. I talked to Scott the cam guy about welding and re-grinding the US cam to match the "S" spec. No dice.
So I just got the cams back today. I'm bringin the broken cam to the machine shop on Monday. I'm going to have my "S" rifle drilled and threaded. Then I'm going to have a new stub made and thread it back into the cam. Fixed! I hope.
Here's a photo of the cams. Notice the hole in the end. There is a long bolt that holds the Sprocket on the cam. The threads start back inside the broken cam about 1/4" So there's plenty of threads inside the cam for the sprocket bolt after the rifle boring and new stub is threaded on.
The cam on the left is the "S" cam. Notice the long duration.
what' going to keep the stub from rotating? a bolt is enough? excuse my metallurgical ignorance... =)
Hey Rick,
Is this the fix others have used that you told me about? I'm also wondering how you are going to pin it so it doesn't rotate? Didn't you say other people have successfully fixed these cams by welding them back together? I remember you saying the driver's side cam breaks way more often than the pass side...so people have developed a fix for this. Good luck with it.
I knew there was a trick to this V8 in a 914 business. Now I get it- it's because the V8 is a crankcase as well and not a block like I kept thinking.
NOW I understand why you V8 guys keep saying it's easy to work on in there....
Just a thought if the cam repair doesnt work out. That guy down in Fla. that is always trying to swap parts with anyone who lists stuff for sale had a bunch of 928 engines he was trying to sell. He may have the cams. Dad and Mom say to tell you hi
Too many guys think I can't or shouldn't fix my cam. So I'm not.
I just received my Cometic thick head gaskets and reinstalled the heads. I have one more torque sequence to go, but your supposed to let the engine sit for a couple hours before the last phase. The engine should be back in by Saturday night or sunday morning.
So does this mean you had to drop $950 on a new cam?
He's going to use a perfectly good pair of US spec cams (he had them already) to tide him over for a while...then later, he'll source the Euro "extra super fancy" cams.
Hey Larry! This Blings for you!
Attached image(s)
Isn't that how a 914 drivetrain is supposed to look?
Make sure you use the good duct tape this time.
I got a call from Rick late Saturday night... The Alien lives! It's heart was sounding good
and had a steady pulse......
Time for an update: I called chappy and some others all excited about getting the Alien running last saturday night. By sunday morning I was back pulling the engine out. I developed a real bad water and even worse oil leak. Neither looked possible to fix with the engine in the car.
Now remember, I'm trying to make the RCR Wednesday and the car has been in storage for a long time.
It took all day Sunday to fix the water leak. I discovered the oil seal on the pump was pushed out about 1/8". I removed the seal and cleaned up all the oil. I was out of Yamabond, which is what I usually use to assist with securing these seals. I glued the seal in with JB 4 minute epoxy to be sure the seal wouldn't push out again.
I reinstalled the engine Sunday. I fired it off this morning and ran it about 3 minutes when I noticed oil leaking again! I figured maybe the pressure relief valve was sticking. I pulled it and cleaned it an reinstalled the cap with an extra aluminum washer to drop the pressure. Still leaked.
I called 928 International. I explained the issue to Jim one of the counter guys. He solved my problem over the phone by asking about 3 questions in about 1 minute. It seems there is an early and late oil pump and they are just slightly different.
During my rebuild I grabbed the cleanest pump of three that I have. It turns out the pump I used has the re-designed seal relief hole that gets blocked off if you install it in the early block. This causes the seal to balloon and leak.
Now that I know the leak isn't from the balancer or the block seam I pulled the pump with the engine in the car. It is possible to do, but the pump just clears the firewall. It is about a half hour job with the engine in the car. I matched up my three pumps and there is a clear difference in the seal relief location. I installed the early cast steel pump and put the late model one on the shelf.
So, After a two day set back I still need to install the axles and shift rod, Hit it with the timing light, Change the Auxilary air valve and wash about 2 lbs of dirt off the top surfaces.
I think I'll be ready to roll Wednesday early...
Geez Rick,
My heart rises and falls with every challenge you come across. LOL
Congrats to see the end in sight.
Did you also use this part?
Wow Rick! Never a dull moment with your 914. I'm really happy to read it runs and sounds like ready to go. Good job!
I still remember that car from San Jose. Everybody was headed up to the meet and greet and racking off their pipes. 4 poopers and a few sixes and then comes Rick. It kind of ended the show. Kind of like a bunch of bugs getting squished with a size 12.
I'm glad to hear you'll get some seat time. Enjoy yourself, Way to go Rick
Dave
Hi Everyone,
I want to tell my story about the Olah's and my first meeting them at our MidWest 2004 meet. It was a happening that left an indelible mark in my mind when they arrived with the 914-8/Alien. It's more than the car, it's Rick's knowledge & inspiration to build such a world class car. Here's a few Alien photo's from the meet.
Rick, you are an inspiration to us all. Keep the flame burning.

I have a video of The Alien pulling out of the parking lot at the Big Texan in Amarillo and damn near tagging a Limo that was pulling in !!!! Damn impressive car in my opinion !!!
Heres the scoop, Rick had a CV failure. He is stopping by my place in the morning and installing an axle. He has his pick of 4 extras i have.
Then he is off to Space land Alabama.....He is insane, God love him....
Aliens never die they phone home.......
Hey all,
This push to get the car road worthy has been real trying. I'm thankful for all my friends that keep me motivated and help me along the way.
Yep, I have a total of 15 miles on the car. I was putting some miles on it and stopped at the machine shop that bored my block. I made an attempt at a very small chirp in the driveway at the shop and I had a CV snap.
So, we go down to pick up the Alien with the Mothership. I always load the car rear first. Today I decided to load it front first. Sandy asks, it's going to clear isn't it? I say ya, no problem... We push it up the ramp.... and Crunch! Busted the 916 glass front bumper. So... I just pulled the bumper off and glassed it back together. It ain't purdie but it's one piece.
I'm a little upset about it but thankful for Chappy. I have no spare axles and was pretty much screwed. So with his help, I'm meeting up with Bill (wbertho) and were hitting the road. I have no break in miles on the engine yet. I still have the break in oil in it. I'm going to give some quick lube guy a stiffy tomorrow somewhere along our route when I pull in and ask him to give us a change.
You guys have to know how great my wife is for putting up with all this goofing around. She has been very supportive. After all the wierd stuff that has happened over the last several months, she's still up for the road trip.
Hey Rick,
I looked everywhere and couldn't find an axle. Chappy's axle will no doubt look brand new. Hell, his boots probably don't have a crack in them either. And yes, Sandy must have a lot of patience. Youve' literally been killing yourself to get the Alien together with one hurdle after another. If you want to perform the surgery at my house, I'm ready for ya.
Bill
5:20 am here we go...
good luck, rick!
We will turn on the tracking becon, Sir. Godspeed to you.
We should get a homing device installed on the Alien so we can watch their progress.
Photos of the Alien at the Space Center should be our new car of the month.
Well it was a short season. Maybe spring will come early.
I just finished installing an electric boiler at "North Base Area 51"
I've had hydronic tubes in the floor since I had the slab poured but never hooked it up. In floor heat is sooo weird.
Sacriledge! Get her inside or activate her shields.
by the way you did a fantasic job. pumping away from the expansion tank is the best way to scrub the microbubbles from a system. you got a good diagram.
Alien update:
Some of you may know I discovered I had a broken "S" cam. These are unobtainium. After market cams for these engines are in the neighborhood of
$ 1000.00. So in order to make one event this year I opted to install a set of US cams until I could find a "S" cam to replace my broken one.
There was a high mile 4.7L M/28 11 1980 928 euro spec "S" engine for sale on Rennlist for $ 1500.00 The guy decided to part the engine out when no one stepped up to purchase the engine whole.
I just sent the money for the cams!
For those that don't know this is THE engine to get. It has the biggest ports and valves of the 16 valve engines, way better cams than the US engines and the inside diameter of the spyder tubes are larger than the US engines, also the throttle body is way bigger. The euro "S" makes 300 hp in stock trim turning a pollution pump,A/C, power steering, etc. (I don't have those hp robbers)
vs the US engine with 218 hp.
My original engine, (the one I broke) was an M/28 11 euro "S". I had my block bored to 5.0 and used 32 valve pistons modified with 16 valve notches. My heads are shaved alot. So My compression is like 10.5/1
Simply add the euro "S" top end and you have what the 928 guys call a hybrid. These are known to have 350 + hp as I understand.
So, next spring, WFO
I just realized I haven't bumped this thread for awhile. I actually drove the car three times this year already. (until it snowed again ) I took a 50 mile round trip run up the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior for Lunch at Culvers. And I drove the car twice last week as a DD for work. Cool!
Sandy and I have two major trips planned this year. We plan to drive to Hershey for the Mid-Engine Invasion, and were Booked for the WCR in So-Cal. Hope to see you all there!
any updates?
Here's a long over due update. Sandy and I made the trip out East to the Mid-Engine Invasion in Hershey PA. Most of you know about that but some may not. It was such a whirlwind trip I didn't even take any photos. Between driving and meeting everyone, I don't know how it happened but I have no photos. So you will just have to take my word for it. Or we could chalk it up to another Alien sighting...
Sandy was in a masters class during our trip and had a final class project involving two other classmates. She completed her section while we were bumping and banging our way down the road submitted her section of the project to the leader while we were traveling. Being her typical controlling self she insisted seeing the final work before it was submitted for grading. Good thing she insisted because the final peice was a joke. So we had to disappear in the middle of the day on Saturday so she could get back to the room and fix the assignment and get it ready for grading. She pulled off another "A" so it was worth it.
Anyway, hey! I managed to meet some new friends and catchup with some old friends. For all you crazy people that came so far to meet up, swap stories and share food and laughs, my hat is off to you! I specially want to say how great it was to see Barber Dave. I don't want anyone to feel left out for not being mentioned so don't take offense. It was great meeting you all. I was pleased to see my good friend Ed Morrow. I have seen him at many events through the years. We have had some funny times. The Clock I gave him only has 914 on it. Ed always knows what time it is. Ask his wife. She will give you one of these
I had the great privlege of working behind the scenes as one of the planners. Until you've done this you can't know what a joy it is when people start signing up for the event and start a real banter about what a great time this will be. I specially wanted to meet the planners I was working with long distance. Ray, Mike and Zach and Rich. Pat yourselves on the back guys you pulled together a great time for all. All the sponsors were very kind and generous this year. We can never make these things happen without the sponsors. Thank you all!
I finally got to meet Rich Towle. We had some time to walk around the swap meet and talk cars. Rich is a real car guy with a vast background and a wealth of knowledge that runs deeper that 914's. I have a feeling we will see some real wild thing coming out of his garage over the next several years.
Anyone that has a photo to prove the Alien was in Hershey and this wasn't just an unexplained Alien sighting feel free to post it.
Then about 3 weeks after Hershey we fired up the Alien again and headed to So Cal to the WCR 09. Sandy was finished with her masters class and had a break so she helped with the driving and photography this trip. I'll add a few photos as I go along.
I love traveling west!
Late night Arrival in Vegas. Thanks to John and Toast for a place to finally get a good night sleep!
And We have never felt so welcome!
Next day we all headed to the WCR. Toast couldn't come. She had to work. We missed ya!
We took the long way! I have a real problem finding time to just relax but thanks to friends We made this a real vacation. Ed Morrow and his daughter Jen joined us in the morning and we headed to Hoover Dam. If you haven't been there for a while you will be shocked! They are consrtucting a new bridge across the river and it is dramatic to say the least!
The crew!
Then Ed and I spotted this fish from the dam! If you know how high the dam is you can imagine how big this fish must have been!
Then we headed for Route "66" What a great trip!
We stopped at the Famous Roy's Motel in Amboy along Route "66"
Next we drove through the Joshua Tree National Forest. This is a very Alien place!
Here's Skull Rock
Here's a picture of Ed in the nose of the skull.
Sharing driving duties.
And really cute toes!
Arrival after about 2250 miles one way.
Some photos from the WCR 09
Nice. Double vision. A couple of my favorite 914s. A sweet 6 and a unique 8, both looking killer in black!
Some photos from Mnt Wilson and Lancaster.
Hiya Rick. Let me know if you need anything here:
http://denver.craigslist.org/pts/1200225888.html
I have been fighting an issue with my shifter since last fall when we attended the RCR in Huntsville. It has gone out of adjustment twice. I was loosening the pinch clamp in the tunnel and realigning the rods. (I have tail shift lingage to a side shift tranaxle) Well, it went out of adjustment again the other day. I slid under the car to see if there was any other cause I was missing like a worn bushing or something. I was moving the rod checking for play when I noticed the rod was moving inside the dog foot on the side shift end. I tightened up the cone screw and BAM! The car never shifted so good! duh!
You may feel silly about it,
but it's sure worth it!
Now you get to some serious shifting behind your V8!!
I'm jealous.
In my quest to improve my shifting I have been wanting to replace my rear shift bushing. Here's a link to a two piece bronze bushing I made from parts I picked up at Menards.
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=99331
Here's the end result.
Oh, BTW: Sandy and I leave for the RCC in three days. Over 1300 miles one way.
Looking good Rick! Wish I could make it to RRC but no go. Sucks as I am in Vegas the following week. Just couldn't stay there for 2 weeks
So I just skimmed through this thread. And the whole time was thinking how cool it was that there was another Euro 928-swapped 914 out there. You see, when I first started looking into a 914, I asked a friend of mine who's done a few VW-subaru swaps for advice. and one of the first things he said was that he knows a guy with one with a 928 V8 in one.
Then I noticed your location
Do you know Phil at SVS Inc.?
Awesome build! and if things go well this fall, hopefully I'll be picking your brain over the winter for advice on my own build!
I realized I missed an update from our travels around "The World"
Here is a couple photos from our trip to the "RRC 09" We met some new friends and we excited to see some familiar faces as well.
Our hosts were were very attentive. The food was great! the camp ground was a fabulous idea, Monument National Park was awesome, and Gateway Museum was a site to see!
We were presented with the long distance award. All in all, I think with the driving we did while in Colorado we logged over 3000 more miles this year.

Well, I hurt the transaxle in the Alien last fall after returning from the RRC. I wasn't going to even pull the car out of storage this year. I have been busy trying to get the Ravenna car done. But I had some set backs so I decided to fix the transaxle in the Alien. Here's how the car looked when I pulled it out of storage. Damn good thing I didn't let this sit until next year!
We had heavy rain here several time this year and water got under the door of the storage garage. With the hunidity the interior of the car turned into Mold!

Then something was walking on it. I think a cat got into the garage!

Engine is covered in corrosion!
So, the engine is out, the rear tires are bald, the brakes are torn down, transaxle is apart, the car is dirty and the interior is covered in Mold!
See ya at the RRC 10!
Yikes . Mold sucks. Sorry you had this set back but if anyone knows how to deal with it you are the man
Dang Rick that sucks. Good thing you did catch it before winter. At least you can take care of it now. Would have been much worse after winter. Still sucks but at least you have a week & a half to get it done right . Best of luck man! You have a fair amount to get done. Wish I were closer to help
Sorry to hear about the Alien, everything looked good this spring. Glad you looked at it before it was in worse condition. Good luck with getting it ready.
Mold, yuck!
Glad you got it out of there when you did!
Moister is just a killer of most any car.
Very nice to see you've dug right into the project.
Get it back on the road.
I needed to clean up a couple cutouts in my rear trunk. When I redesigned my throttle linkage I had to make some clearence. The cutouts were rather unsightly. So, here's the redesign.
Here's the before.
Here's the panel I made.
Here it is welded in.
Done ready for the engine.
so while the engine was out did you swap out the adaptor plate for the one with your logo on it?
We are rooting for you Rick and Sandy!!!
Kind of scary with all that mold!
The Alien lives once again . But here's the deal.
I'm taking her to the RRC 10 and maybe to the MUSR Tail of the Dragon 10. After that she's going into the deep dark recesses of Area51Werks. She will be going under the knife for a complete Alien autopsy. Earths climate and organisms have attacked her at her core. The massive power that propells her at warp speed have stressed her chassis. We need to go in and find her weakness and through this process see how we can make her a supreme being again.
She won't likely be seen in the light of day until we have looked at every part of her anatomy.
She traveled many distant journey's in search of her kind. She found safe refuge at Series 9 when her cooling system failed in NM. She alway's came in peace and made many new friends.
If you haven't had a chance to see her and your on the fence for either the RRC or the MUSR, this may be your last chance for many light years. But rest assured, she will be back!
Hello Rick,
I have read your blog on this project and I am speechless, I would like to discuss the detail on how you were able to put this all together. I am finishing up a 2002 restoration and looking for another challange and yours seem like a winner.
I would like to see if you would email me your contact information so that I can post the several pages of question I have so far on how this was done. Please contact me at justin_evertatsbcglobaldotnet. Respectfully, Justin Evert
I guess I forgot to up date this since the RRC 10. The Alien failed to make the journey. So not only am I looking at the entire chassis, brakes, suspension and paint, I am opening up the engine to find out what happened to the oil pressure.
Had a great time at the RRC though!
I had my oil tested. the oil issue didn't seem to act normal like when I've spun bearings in my drag car back in the day.
The oil tested normal so I'm looking at the pressure relief valves and oil pump pickup tube before I start taking the engine apart. Cross your fingers for me.

Hope everything works out for the best. A simple fix would nice!
Keep us posted!
WOW!! Rick I just read this thread for the first time. I had no idea! All I have to say is:
I would love to go for a ride in a real v8 914 some day! I can't believe all of the engineering. I hope to have an Alien sighting and possible abduction sometime. I believe... resistance would have been futile.
The Alien needs to get back to assimilating. I hope things are looking up Rick. I want to see this extraterrestrial beast. I just wish it could be WCR-11.
Rick, Back together on the track for 2012 WCR? I need to bug my dad to see if we have any video of that..
Thanks guys, Hey, I had my oil tested after the drop in pressure. There is no metal in the oil and no anti-freeze or water. So I'm going to drop the pan and see if the pickup tube is loose. I'm also replacing the pressure relief valves and springs. These are external and easy to do. If the oil pressure issue is related to one of these things I could run the car another season.
Here's the test results

Rick,
Anymore progress on the "Alien"?
Been doing some digging on gearbox mods, and wanted to see how much reconfiguring you did on the gear to make the 928 work.
Hope there's good news?

Justin

I guess I should have updated this thread again. I'm working on a replacement car so I can take the Alien off the road.
I dropped the oil pan just before the WCR 2011 and discovered a sludge in the bottom of the pan with carbon crystals in it. It looks like I cooked the oil and the viscosity enhansors were separated. I pulled the pressure relief valve to clean it and discovered I had two aluminum crush washers on the cap. This would lower the opening pressure. I think there was a perfect storm here that caused the pressure to fluctuate. In any case I put it back together and I have normal pressure.
To extend the life of the car before a major rebuild I rebuilt all the calipers and pulled all the CV's apart and repacked them. I also had a rear alignmnet done. She's not too pretty anymore, Some rust starting to show and lots of rock chips and paint damage from bug guts. But were still rolling.
So off the to WCR. Sandy and I put about 4700 miles on the car. There is a stretch of road between Salt Lake and Medford that was rumored to have felt our tire rubber blister her surface at triple digits... maybe..
Were back home and getting ready for the RRC. Maybe in the Alien, maybe in Sandy's Ravenna car.

Triple digit!
How high for how long?
'Drive like you stole it"
Fired up the Alien and took her out for a nice drive today. I'm trying to figure out if my coolant leak is from the radiator or a hose. Didn't really worry about it too much just drove her with no drama. I have a few things to fix from last years hard miles. Among the items is a broken throttle cable up on the top of the engine. I'm still driving around with the #9 tie wire fix we did at the RRC last fall. I actually forgot about it. The leak turned out to be a hose clamp.
I'm getting caught up with my work load. I should be down to 5-6 days a week from 7. It looks like I'll have a little time to give the Alien the once over just before the trip to Beaver Utah and the RRC!
She won't win any beauty contests this year. I spotted some rust. I have lots of rock chips and bug guts stuck all over the front end from last year yet. I still have a broken windsheild from that big rock I took in the lower left corner on the way to RRC last year. I have a new glass and may at least change that before I leave.
I still need to take her off the road and do a full on re-do but I can't bring myself to do it until the Ravenna car gets paint. She's close but not close enough.
So, I'm going to drive her like I stole her!
Sandy and I just returned from another road trip to the RRC12. We had an awesome time. It was nice to see our friends.
It's a good thing I didn't change the cracked windsheild before I left. I got another crack while following Kevin and another one on the way home off a truck in a construction zone.
Today is 914 day. We are going to take a final drive up the scenic north shore of lake superior before I put the Alien in the shop for a much needed resurection. I'll get some photos and post them tonight.
Here are a couple from our trip out west. The car ran flawlessly. The temp rose a couple times while in town but that's normal when your in 90+ degrees and bumper to bumper traffic.
Anyone know where this is?
Following this since the beginning. Whatacar!
Ok down to business. One of my favorite shirts is the Alien. I think U should do another run with "Alien Reseraction". What Say Y'all? Looking forward to the rebuild!

Taken today on 914 day! On the western shore of Lake Superior.
for ben from OR. Here's your casual reading...
In the spirit of the COTM contest here's the Alien build thread. The car made it out of the garage this summer for three short trips. I need to check out a wheel bearing issue before I hit the road again. Dang winters are hard on cars that sit in unheated spaces.
The alien is an icon. One of the few named 914s everyone knows.
Looks like The resurrection has started. Sandy told me she is not going to the route 66 Event this year in a car that looks like it has been road hard and put away wet. So I either suffer through the pain and get to work or we don't go. So I pull her out of storage and started. The windshield is out on the floor and the hood is off.
List of must do work:
Replace the busted windshield, dash pad, Fix the rock chips all over the front clip, Fix the fibre glas cracked 916 front end.
I am going to pull the engine to replace the cams. After I broke a euro cam and didn't have a replacement I installed a set of US cams. The euro-spec "S" stuff is high dollar and not easy to come by. I ended up purchasing a later "S" engine that actually has a better set of cams than the one set I broke. In the 4.7 configuration the 1980 euro "S" is rated at 300 hp. The later 84 4.7 "S" is rated at 310. With my 5.0 short block shaved heads euro heads and all "S" spec top end I should be around 360+
I have a leaking cam seal and I may as well replace the water pump and timing belt while the engine is out. beyond that the car needs a serious detail. But I will get to that when I get to it.
I'm not one to stand back and throw sugar at the car. I would rather drive it. That's what it's for.
All in a month or two???
I got a dollar that says he'll make it in time. See ya'll there Rick. Kent
When Rick works on his cars, the soundtrack to the A-Team is playing in the background...
Rick, do you still use the stock tension-er on the timing belt? I am using the porkens tension-er bought from 928srus. I am very happy with it and it is much easier to deal with because it auto tensions.
Rick, what came of the redo? It's been 14 years (14 years!!!) since I've seen the Alien in person!
Nothing since 2018... the car is apart. I found this magazine That was part of my inspiration for the build of the Alien. Brad brought it up early on in the build. I knew I had the Magazine someplace. I found it while cleaning out an old file cabinet.
Posting an update for 914 day.
I started repairing several years of road rash 5 years ago. Has it been that long? I moved the Alien to my son's when we were getting ready to sell our house and move into the new house. After 3 years at my son's house the Alien was looking a little worse than she deserved.
She wouldn't start so she came home on the trailer. After a little clean up and a new battery cable she came back to life.
Had to christen the new concrete.
Legendary!
Great to have some news
Antoine
Probably one of my favorite 914's. Very cool to see you get your 914 back home and start work on it again.
If memory serves, you have glass flares correct? If you're going to paint, any thought to installing steel flares?
So great to see this car getting some attention, easily in the top 5 of all 914 builds!
Thank you Mike. We have been around here for a long time.
Been a few months, any cool/fun updates?
I finally have heat in my new detached garage. I have to finish Juergen's 6 before I can do anything else.
The Alien is scheduled to get back in line to complete her resurection after Juergen's car is transported thru the space time continum on it's way home.
I received a special package from Marty today! We have talked about this for years. We finally made it happen.
When shopping for your exhaust needs don't forget Marty and MSDS!
Those headers are truly a work of art!
Can't remember if your exhaust system was two independent by side or cross flowed?
Oooo those should help flow nicely…maybe I’ve been watching too many episodes of engine masters.
LOVE IT!
How about you take us on a tour of that new garage Rick. Looks perfect. I saw you moved to WI but quickly realized you're only a couple of miles from your old place. Any tax advantages in WI?
Remember this T-Shirt? A favorite when working on the teener. Maybe another run of these in the future?
Attached thumbnail(s)
Seriously??? You are going to paint the car AGAIN??!!
What is this, 7 out of 9 times?
I remember you painted it twice right before an event.
Rick,
You might think about upgrading the transmission to a Boxster/Cayman 6 speed. It's not as hard as it looks.
I went out to the garage and laid my cell phone on the ground to get this picture.
That is with a 1/2 inch adapter plate between the engine and trans.
I pulled your picture from your webpage of the alien's trans mount.
Considering you trim the transmission bellhousing, and you are only backed up that far, you should have room for the 6-speed.
I’m happy you get to go out and work on your own car again.
I hope you enjoy each moment alone…tinkering.
I’m finally getting this barn find to stop marking its territory.
Then fuel, etc etc
Once that is sold, my old 914 is going to get done…and painted, and driven again!!
Here ya go Rick @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=8358 918-S Hope this helps. I threw in a few extra.

You'll probably want this chart as well. https://www.rallispec.com/downloads/Transmission%20ID%20Chart_Public.pdf
This is the starter. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1292991&cc=1359390&pt=4152&jsn=419&_nck=ZExt1ysfqhqWnq%2BEvUNdS3Txyey60IDtnjPWF5UU9J0BWQv7pvqZbh%2BYrdIIoJ2QvjAcW39YRTU02C77No248W9oPPOPBa0%2ByMrUiaYjGVdwQceOjej2TuRe8f1GOf47sMaJHuB2tqvqdSsnDMzZS%2BPFgkvTqkWLb4ZxjavIRr5bwS5%2BqKaEuV49OKaUv56ZKf9jWNi75AJshwTZdRzwSjWavqM%2B66vQHFkl1MQk7GONSCQny9y4qhHHXnRqmHdJl%2F%2FRIz4pxhVxK9RDmvNOyWDp9lMvPvq0fXiPpXMa0R3zzbRpOyCT0a9%2BKatR%2Ffoj BTW Subaru gears makes a Quaif unit for the 5 sp transmission.
I got a bit lost on this thread.
Did you put a Boxster motor and trans in your car? @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=9964
If you go suby 5 speed you will need a LSD to hold it together per the guys at subygearz.. i was looking at that until I got the boxster s.
Interesting info on the Subaru Transaxle swap started by Ross. Posting the thread here in the event I want to hunt it down later.
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=351451&st=0
How does the length of the Subi trans compare with the 901 and the Boxster 6 speed?
3 moving dolly’s. Good idea.
Liked the Audi/ Passat Transaxle stuff too. That looks like a nice option. I am totally into low buck solutions.

When I did my car, the low mileage Cayman 6-speed was about 4K.
The other alternative I had was a G-50. It would have to be run upside down, and I would have had to cut the trunk floor out to use it. And a clapped out G-50 was 10K.
And another thing to think about is that with a Boxster/Cayman trans behind the 928 motor, you are still eligible to participate in Porsche Parade. With a Subi or Audi box, you are not.
Don't know if that matters to you, or not.
If you really want to be unique.. you could put in this....

You should upgrade the alien with new Transwarp drive technology...

Picked this up last Monday.
Nice! You're really gonna like the more modern shifting feel Rick. And you don't have to worry as much about grenading it when you make 11s .
