ok, this one has me scratching my head ...


- there's a wireless broadband in my new house. the router is upstairs at my landlords and i have access.

- i use my laptops wireless to connect. laptop is windows XP home. access works fine and is fast.

- i then turned on internet connection sharing on the laptop and used the LAN card to feed the internet into a router.

- i connected my desktop to the router and i'm getting internet on that just fine as well. this box is windows XP as well.

- i don't use DHCP but rather static private IPs instead. range on the LAN is 192.168.0.1 and up. 1 being the routers IP. 10 for the desktop.

so far so good. everything works just fine.


now, two days ago, i added a second machine to the internal LAN. i set up the network the exact same way i did for the other desktop. IP is 11.
the only difference is that the new box is running windows vista home premium.

here's the problem:
on the vista box, i can ping anything just fine. the router, the other desktop, the wireless router upstairs, ANY website out there for a fact. DNS works, ping works,
but when i try to look up a website i always get the "page cannot be displayed" error.


and it gets even stranger! there's *one* website that works just fine.
i can access google.com without any problems. but nothing else works ...



- the network routing tables seems to be OK, as i can ping everything just fine.
- DNS works as i can resolve any name to IP.
- basic network protocols work as i can see the other desktop on the network.
- filesharing works as i can transfer files between the two desktops.


i tried and disabled all "security" features. turned off the firewall and windows defender and virus protection and such.
set IE to lowest security settings possible.
same thing, still can't get to any websites on the vista box ...


only thing i can think of, maybe the internet sharing on XP is somehow not 100% compatible with vista ???

IPV4 and IPV6 problem.

I had just recently read an article about how Visat is very IPV6 heavy in it's usage. To the degree that it sometimes won't work in instances like this. Basically tunnels through itself to convert IPV6 packets to IPV4, and vice-versa. Something about how the packets really have IPv6 headers and resolving connections to IPs fail. Ex: http://www.domain.com works (DNS resolution) but http://11.22.333.444/ doesn't. \\YourComputer\ works but \\192.168.0.11\ doesn't.

What router?

Why are you using a router behind your laptop instead of a switch/hub?

What is the IP address of the wireless NIC?

What is the IP address of the ethernet NIC in the laptop?

What happens if you turn off the XP desktop and give it's IP address to the Vista desktop?

Let's start there.

network and router work ... used a switch instead of the router and got the same results ...

the XP desktop works just fine behind the router, the vista box does not. and yes, i did the IP switching. no change.

is there a hotfix for either vista or xp to make them compatible when using ICS ???

what happens if you connect straight from your vista box to your laptop bypassing the router/switch?

My boss - who is a network guru (I'm a COTS developer for network management tools) discovered that his home router was not "Vista compatible". He had to go out and buy a newer router which was and everything worked fine. We can't fathom what vista is doing to the network stack on the packets it passing but somehow it doesn't work. Maybe other have a point with IPV6 stuff getting in the way. I had a colleague working on some IPV6 stuff and it's wierd.

Is it possible your landlord is using the same IP as your new machine? Maybe his DHCP range starts at .11?

Is it possible that he has the number of wireless clients allowed to connect set to one less than what you're trying to do?

this sound a lot like a security settings issue as you CAN access google.com. that means IP is working fine.

i'd try shutting off all security and all firewalls, on all machines and router/switch, restart everything, and give her a try.

does your vista box have mcafee/symantec and windows security installed?
is everything shut off and verified off?

My brother was having this same problem with his new Vista PC. He couldn't figure it out and my Dad and I could come look at it so he brought it to campus tech support. It confused them too. When he gets it back I'll post up the problem if they tell him.

What is the path the connection is taking when you run a traceroute from Vista to www.google.com? There was an issue fixed with a patch that handled resource utilization with regards to network connections recently.

I would suspect ICS as a culprit. Can you connect router to router and eliminate ICS to see if Vista works.

google.com may be cached

How many NIC cards in the Vista machine. I had conflicts on mine originally with it trying to resove items through a nic that wasn't connected.

no change, same thing. the router is just that, routing. it seems to be a problem between vista and ICS on XP ...

switched IPs with the working XP desktop. no change. plus, my internal LAN network comes off my router. the only thing connected to the wireless network is my laptop. which works fine ...

Andy,

Have you tried hooking up the vista as the wireless connection and working it backwards from there? Maybe the Vista needs to be the primary?

good thinking, but i'd rather *not* have my new desktop sitting in the closet ...

which is where i get the best signal with my laptop ...

just to make sure it wasn't a IE7 problem, i downloaded firefox and installed it ... same thing ...

must be a network problem somehow ... i guess i should probably run a 50' cable upstairs and ditch the wireless setup ...

that way, i can get rid of ICS ...

Does your desk top have a removable wireless antenna? I ran a coax from my wireless router and extended the antenna down to my dock so I can use my laptop on the boat! Maybe you could extend your desktop antenna into your closet?

yeah, but then i don't have a LAN network no more ... see, i actually have 4 desktops and one laptop at my home-office.

and they all need to be networked. and i *hate* wireless to no end. what i really need to do is to talk my landlord into letting me run a wire upstairs so i can just set up my own non-wireless router for my office and be done with it ...

Very unique situation! Sorry, I can't think of anything else except purchasing a wireless access point, putting it in the closet and hooking it to a router! And, it still depends on wheather your Vista will work as the main center. Maybe you should test that first anyway.

i would carry my vista box upstairs and plug it directly into the landlords wireless to confirm connectivity.

then purchase a stand alone wireless router. =)
