I'm in chapter 3. I've killed the 2 guardians. Now I need the Vortigaunt and Alex to follow me to the elevator, so the Vortigaunt can open the door.

However, the vortiguant stays put next to the thumper thingy. What do I do to get him to move to the gate?

I don't recall, it's been a few years since I played that game. Did you try kicking him in the balls? Search the web for a walk through or ask a 12 year old.
