914World.com _ 914World Garage _ OT: Hung out with Chuck Beck and son Randy...

Posted by: wbergtho Oct 27 2007, 02:04 PM

I flew out to ATL and hung out with my friend Randy Beck (son of the famous Chuck Beck...IE 550 Spyder, Shogun, Lister and now 904's). Had a great time with my dirty clothes helping out and watching the production of a new 904 reproduction. The old man is 70 and moves around the place like an uncaged lion. This SOB has more energy than Randy & I combined!...Hell, he even has a 5 year old daughter to keep him on his toes when he comes home from the shop! A real man's man. If you've ever met him you'll know what I mean. The car's are all stainless & fiberglass...very high quality hand laid fiberglass to the exacting standards Chuck Beck has developed over the years. With a 3.6 with around 300HP bolted into a 904...you have a very aerodynamic car weighing in at 1700 lbs. This all translates into a very well balanced & extremely fast car. Chuck explained to me that he would soon build a 1400 lb all aluminum framed/lighter fibreglass build up utilizing a real 685 HP 962 twin turbo engine!!! I can't wait for the ride in that one. All in all, a very satisfying experience in ATL learning how every nut & bolt and every piece of fibreglass is thoughtfully crafted into an awesome new 904!

50K (Randy is quite a knowledgeable fabricator and driver. A real bonified Porsche enthusiast! ...Anyone who has raced against him knows he is very gifted and quite a nice guy on top of it all) His dad Chuck is an amazing guy. Words cannot describe how intense and determined he is to produce a very nice reproduction! The stories that come flying out of him are as amazing as he is! pray.gif welder.gif smilie_pokal.gif happy11.gif

It's interesting to see someone on the forum who has one of Chuck's cars. Looks nice! Does it have a 3.6 in it?

My car has a 2.0 ltr out of a 914, over 95% of the parts in the car came off a
914 I bought for $200. I have added A/C, roll up windows, floor mounted pedals
and a home made rear grill.

904SVO,

That is real nice! The rear grill looks like a project in itself. How much does your 904 weigh? I bet it is noticably faster than a 914.

Car weights 1750 lbs, engine rear wheel HP = 100

Car is a daily driver also.

Fun to drive, neighbor describe it as a go-cart on steroids

Pure unobtainium!

Is 50K for a "turnkey" or minus drivetrain.

What transmission is used?

What is the rear suspension configuration?

What is the front suspension configuration?

I wonder what the (snooty) Porsche guys will think about it. Gee, is it a "Porsche" or just another kit-car.

Chuck car is a rolling chassis you supply the engine and trans the supension is coils over shocks just like a 904. Check out his website

OK, I'm in love.

But much like my desire for Jessica Alba, it's pretty much just a dream that isn't going to happen.

The snotty Porsche guys will like it because it looks exactly like an authentic one and it is stiffer, lighter, more powerful and more capable than the original. The suspension is all (almost) exact reproductions of the real 904...not any junk in this car!

It was quite easy to make it look like a real 904 using

http://www.gunnarracing.com

he restore a couple of 904's showing what they really look like.

That page has been like that for a long (!!!) time.

My gut feeling is that he is looking for a bunch of buyers before he is going to spend the time to finish it.

There is another 904 out of England that looks cool.

The one from England is a exact copy of a 904.
