914World.com _ 914World Garage _ WCR 2008 Seattle "Middle of Nowhere"

Posted by: greenie Nov 7 2007, 11:15 AM

Hey Guys,

If you haven't been on the forum lately.....

The WCR 2008 will be held in Seattle next year! smilie_pokal.gif

From the initial announcement a theme has already developed....

It rains alot, it's not SoCal, and it's "in the middle of nowhere." poke.gif

I love it!! I can see the banner already:

" NARP , Not a Real Club , Now Meeting "In the Middle of Nowhere"

We all drive 914s, we're used to this kinda stuff! biggrin.gif

We have so much to offer to this event, so many choices with so much variety, a mountain drive, a drive around the sound, ferry ride, seattle icons to visit, track or autocross event, on & on& on... the region is so diverse and our time is short.

I need some help putting the initial plan and timetable together.

Please try to attend one of the first meetings. Get your ideas in early, get involved, these meetings will be key to making this event a great success.

Let's meet at my house in Issaquah, (near Sammamish State Park)

10:00 AM Saturday 11/10/07 ( This Saturday)

and optional date for those that want to but can't make Saturday:

7:00 PM Tuesday 11/13/07 ( I'll supply the beer)

Please PM me & I'll give address & directions to my house.

My Cell # 425-681-5438

Curt

AKA "Greenie"

If youre doing it in the middle of nowhere WA, might be cool at leavenworth.

Posted by: Root_Werks Nov 7 2007, 08:39 PM

Pretty cool it's gonna be up here this year. Pretty much no excuse not to attend now! biggrin.gif

Posted by: dinomium Nov 7 2007, 08:44 PM

I really want to be a part of helping, but I am on the sidelines until after 16th of Nov.

Anybody up for the Clearwater Casino as a venue??? Middle of Nowhere, close to great drives and Shopping... Bremerton Motorsports park is 30 min away....

Posted by: boxstr Nov 7 2007, 08:55 PM

Who will be in charge of lodging?? laugh.gif Might I suggest that after picking a hotel as the ground zero, it is the responsibility of those attending to make there own reservation.
That way they only have themselves to blame if they are overcharged or do not get a room or whatever.
But after the WCC here in PDX, they one thing to get out of the way early is the lodging.

I'm gonna shoot for Tuesday evening. I sent you a PM. Rich, you gonna show up? Craig, what about you? I might not have anything but an empty stomach to contribute, but hey, it's something. mueba.gif

Curt,
I would love to help with the planning committee but you guys are in the middle of Freakin' Nowhere... w00t.gif

Posted by: ConeDodger Nov 7 2007, 10:58 PM

I hear it rains soooooooooooooo much in Seattle that everyone has permanent foot fungus... AND it is in the MIDDLE OF FREAKIN' NOWHERE!!!

Actually, the event should have quite a turn out... All we have to do is misspell a couple of words so people think we are having the G8 Summit. biggrin.gif Course the ass whoopin' from the Seattle PD will be a bit of a downer.

Seriously guys, start planning for Seattle. They have a Starbucks there. The first one, actually. w00t.gif

Hey Dan and Rich, If you guys are going on Tuesday I think I could make it Tuesday night. Let me know.

The weather and drives up here during the summer are generally good. I love the NW roads. The past few years have been rather warm too biggrin.gif

Im so excited!!! biggrin.gif i went to portland with a close to dying motor for wcc 06 and it was tons of fun.( I was in the yellow smoker) Didnt get to go this year because i was in the middle of my motor swap, but now i got a freshened up 2.0 and new tires , plus i already tested it out by going to seattle this summer. So im good to go. Good luck guys Im sure what ever you come up with will be good.

Posted by: geniusanthony Nov 8 2007, 09:12 AM

what are the preliminary dates we are looking at for this?
I hope to be back from deployment by then and still have time for some finishing touches to do before I can take baby out to play.

Posted by: effutuo101 Nov 8 2007, 09:22 AM

I will try to make Tuesday as well. Some ideas
Kartenspeil run (poker)
Port Townsend run
Levenworth
La Conner
Bremmerton Auto x for the club?

Tulalip is putting in a Hotel up here. I like Clearwater, but I think they just got promoted to a 5 star hotel ( new years is 300 a night two night minimum) and may be a bit pricy. On the other hand, a hotel south would provide easier access to downtown.
I really like the idea of getting as many people as possible on a Ferry and getting a picture. Edmonds ferry seems like the logical choice.

I told Tim Kornacki about this. He cordinates all the PCA AXs, and he designs great courses. He also has a 914. I hope he will be able to show, but if not we can always talk to him as he is a good friend. He works at a shop in the Greenwood area... Right down from John Walker.

Mukilteo-Clinton and Keystone-Port Townsend would work in conjunction with a Port Townsend run.

Great beer in Port Townsend at both Water Street beer3.gif and Port Townsend Brewing. beer3.gif

Diamond Knot in Mukilteo has great beer too. beer3.gif

I seriously doubt that my teener will be roadworthy by next summer, but if it is, I will bring my Nikon D2X for photos.

This WCR may be one of the more important events you ever attend! It is close to Canada and we will eventually be at war with Canada! This is a chance to gather intel on those sneaky snowmen and women! biggrin.gif

Seriously folks... If you have the time and the dime, plan your trip to Seattle... If you don't like the idea of a WCR be sure you don't bring protest signs cause the SPD will beat your ass like a bad bongo!!!

If we can co encide with the Mariners being out of town, my sister is a manager at Pyramid Brewery in Downtown Seattle.

I might be able to get some deeeeeeep discounts on kegs too... including Thomas Kemper sodas for the non beer types.

I'm planning on going; never been to Seattle. Hope you set a date by Jan 1- I gotta plan 2008 vacation time early in the year.

Get a hotel we can all gather, wash cars, and let us make our own reservations. When Craig set up the Monarch, it was perfect type of place for a car group, even had a bar smile.gif . Encourage people to make early reservations, you can always cancel up to 1 or 2 days before the actual date.

Well if there is intrest in a tour through Port Townsend, A stop at a shop full of "different" cars ( Cosworth Lotus, Noble, Ultima CanAm, Pinto ) and some VERY scenic backroad touring I can lend a hand as I will have some time. Larry welder.gif

Seattle is not in the middle of nowhere!

It's on the freakin' EDGE of nowhere.....we can't even see the middle from where we are. And the weather; don't get me started. Actually, everyone from outside the state will be sworn to secrecy about how nice summer is up here. I'm in for the Tuesday meeting.

Chuckanut Drive would make a great tour.

Not only that, we've tolerated non teeners since the beginning...the Pac NW is always worth the visit....might end up being my retirement home...maybe Sequim......

Posted by: Blood red 914-6gt Nov 10 2007, 02:27 PM

Sequim? Why not Port Orchard or Port Townsend? Sequim has one of the highest levels of rainfall in the entire state. It is a beautiful area though.... About 30 minutes from the rain forrest and all.

Yes, We do have an actual rain forrest that records the highest level of rainfall each year. One of the reasons people think it rains here all the time. Seattle isn't even close to the rain forrest though, and the average rainfall in Seattle isn't very high at all.

Actually http://www.sequim.com/ is famous for having the *lowest* rainfall in the state and over 300 days of sunshine per year. It's in the "Olympic Shadow." Now go around to the other side of the mountain and you get rain forest with 144 inches per year. Ouch.

Posted by: rhodyguy Nov 10 2007, 05:27 PM

rand is correct. sequim is considered to be in the sunbelt of western wa. you're just a tad late on retiring there jim. appearently lots of folks from 'other' places have had the same idea. very productive planning meeting today.

Hi Guys,

Just a little update on the first of two "Initial Planning Meetings"

I think Rhody Guy is a little premature on the "all figured out" statement.

We had Bill, Dave Hunt & Kevin in attendance today.

Some idea's kicked around...

We want a nice Seattle flavor to the event ,

Is a Serial Killer theme in poor taste? Rhody guy thought that Ted Bundy tried to lure girls into his 72 914 , i thought it was a bug? Maybe a tour of the Green River & if time permits a trip up to BC for a visit to the pig farm. Poor taste ?, I'm up in the air on this.

Another idea to appease So Cal 914 was to have the event in late July when the rain is at least warm. Any thoughts?

Bill thought maybe a nice drive around that mountain named after the beer would be fun?

We also wanted to make sure that the Orygun fellow that thought we were in the
" middle of nowhere" knows that we harbor no ill will.

We tried to create a little "Sites of Interest " guide for the folks driving through Orygun to Seattle.

We couldn't think of any although Dave said there is a really nice rest stop south of Eugene, and a lot of cows to see...

If Tuesdays meeting is half as productive as todays we are well on our way to a nice event

It's a tradeoff. July might provide the best weather in Seattle, but the drive up I5 from Bakersfield all the way into Oregon is likely to be well over 100 degrees. That's no fun in a 914.
Trying to avoid that hot drive by holding the event in May or Sept will increase the chances of rain in Seattle.
Either way, you'll lose a few potential attendees due to weather concerns (hot or rain).
My guess is you're better off to go for the good weather for Seattle.

Demick

P.S. I love Seattle in the summer. Spent a few summers there doing internships at Boeing when I was in college. This was back during the anti-California movement (got yelled at and flipped off plenty of times for having CA plates). Almost moved there after college. Haven't been back since 1991.

Posted by: Demick Nov 10 2007, 09:58 PM

Let me know if you would like SchipperDesign (my wife's design firm) to come up with a logo to the meet in 2008. (They did the logo for 2007.) They can get you pricing for shirts, decals, etc. No cost for any of the design work.

Chris,

I'll bring a 3pin for you on Tuesday. You showing up?

Date? I am pushing for June or July so its still warm at night....In August it can be cool even after a warm day....Its rare to have a 85F day that stays warm in the evening like in June or July.

Mo'better to be warm standing around in a Hotel parking lot BS'ing like the Portland event...which was really nice with all that beer on tap. beer.gif

WCR 2008 WAHOO!

How about a track day / AX at Pacific Raceway? Maybe coordinated with the porsche club or Bimmer club? Talk with Speedware, I'll bet that they will help with planning it (or even sponsor it!) if they can get enough cars. A DE day would be fun!

If you never been there, the back side of the racetrack is pretty cool!

Id agree that some lapping a PR would be a coup and I'd encourage some brainstorming on how we could pull it off (piggyback with another local club ?) Im skeptical we could raise the track lease fee on our own.
Unless there is a member with some deep pockets out there feeling magnanimous?
BTW that track image makes PR look a lot more polished than it is. Dont get me wrong I love my home track but its really kinda ...rustic.

Posted by: Twise Nov 12 2007, 11:17 AM

Interesting, I have two sisters and a mother that defected to Gig Harbor years ago. I am thinking a group drive up from here in SoCal could be cool. I remember driving through Shasta, just before dropping into Oregon was the closest I have ever come to a religious experience. Any one interseted in planning an invasion? One thing is for certain - I have got to show my car off - I have been waiting for years to show my car off....

Anyone interested in planninig a joint venture - email me. We could totally wuss out and trailer our rides up there. 914's are just no damn good for family outings...

Rustic is a nice way of saying, not as "done" as it could be... biggrin.gif

Still it would be cool! By that time next year, the race car will be the only teener that I plan to have, so track day or AX would be a must for me idea.gif

Posted by: LS6/914 Nov 12 2007, 08:29 PM

Alapping day at Pacific Raceway could well be set up with another local club who has their cars serviced at my shop. This would greatly reduce the cost. If we can have corner workers this will add to the good will. The timing of the event will have to match the 2008 schedule being developed. Iam hoping to attend Tuesday, however Iam in the process of a seperation and may be in So.Cal. for a interview at a race shop. Larry

This sounds like it is working into a pretty good event. I'll probably drive up along the coast. It's cooler and lots lots more fun than I 5.

the illustration of Pacific Raceways International (locals still refer to it as SIR) is of the propsed new config and ugrading of the facilities. what is hard to grasp in the illustration is the elevation change that occurs at the #12. prob 500 ft or so ending in the hard right hander. charge into it and you're going to be in a world of hurt. not for the faint of heart and you're going to want a cage and a Hans device if something goes wrong. a very experienced driver wadded up his race built rx7 this past summer in this area. almost killed him. perhaps we could some how include a couple of "parade" laps, much like laguna in 05', on the sat cruise. PRI is a very busy track.

My comments were not intended to Bash PR but to set a realistic expactaion level for those who have never been there. Heck we are a LONG ways from evan really considering it so ......

Diff subj. Q: didnt someone write a somewhat professional 1st party account of participation in a past WCC (WCR)? Some thing that could be used to market and present to potential sponsers?

Yes!! Are you guys coming down 405, or I5 to 90???? I'm on 405, so it would be super cool if you can come this way. Quickest place for me to meet is at the park & ride at ext 22, right at the freeway.

Hey Jeff

Yes, but there is much to look into on this. Rich, the man, is going to talk to some people and let us know what he finds. piratenanner.gif

All in all it was a great meeting with many ideas thrown out there. It looks like no matter what we decide on this is going to be an amazing time. driving.gif

I am sure we will keep you informed as soon as we know anything. idea.gif

Still, No rain= no top biggrin.gif

I went on a Tour with the PNW PCA to Leavenworth using the back roads. It was alot of fun. Also when we got to Leavenworth we all parked at the High School, that has alot of parking space and it is only a couple block from down Town.

That is the coolest part. Driving at 9:30-10pm and just starting to think about putting on the lights. But, it gives new meaning to "be home by dark".

Posted by: Eddie914 Nov 21 2007, 10:57 PM

How many teeners will be interested in "track time"?

AutoX?

Lapping?

Track Choices:

Pacific Raceways, Kent, WA - Beautiful natural road course - it is probably going to cost at least $200 per driver

Bremerton Raceway, Bremerton, WA - Airport road course and/or AutoX (runways and cones) - could be as inexpensive as $65 per driver.

I believe the best option is to "piggyback" with a group that has scheduled track days.

Club Events Choices:

IRDC - International Race Drivers Club (the track event co-ordinator is a long time 914er) - no club membership required for lapping days (generally lapping days are only in the spring and in the fall (generally no summer lapping days (jsut sanctioned races) - I have a call into the organizers to inquire about the possibility of a summer '08 lapping event)

NWARC - Northwest Alfa Romeo Club - no club membership required - Instructors provided for novice drivers - lots of events through the summer at both PR and BR

BSCC - Bremerton Sports Car Car Club - they sponsor many Autox events and 3-4 open lapping days every year at BR - no club membership required - usually less than $100 for BR lapping days

PCA - Autox's at Bremerton and lapping days at PR - $$$ at PR and crowded at Bremerton for the AutoX events. PCA membership usually required

I'll let you know if I find out any more.

I know I am a local, but I would pay $200 for PRI. I think that would be more fun than any of the other stuff, and it would be much better time spent.

$200 would be out of the question for me. sad.gif

Posted by: Blood red 914-6gt Nov 22 2007, 11:51 AM

I would cover you Mark. After everything you did for the club last year I wouldn't mind. You'd just have to buy me a beer biggrin.gif

Posted by: Root_Werks Nov 22 2007, 08:17 PM

$200 seems to be the going rate for track time these days around here. Money is of course relative. I would and will pay it if things work out. driving.gif

Posted by: rdauenhauer Nov 22 2007, 10:59 PM

Lets not get ahead of ourselves sad.gif
Our goal should be to work something out that "track fees"
would be reasonable enough that everyone who attends
would feel compelled to test out what these little cars are all about. smile.gif
I still think that may be possible.
We'll see. shades.gif stay tuned

2970 miles one way for me.....

but with family and friends in the area, along with the teener crew i met the last time i was in town, i am going to have to pencil this one in.

will be driving the rental car but will do all i can to make it once we have dates.

cheers!

Posted by: rdauenhauer Nov 25 2007, 01:22 PM

Ok.. so perhaps we should shart a list of folks whos "intent" is tp participate?
Id start with the NW group as a default biggrin.gif
We need some #'s. 30 cars? 40, 50?

Posted by: rhodyguy Nov 25 2007, 01:35 PM

i think people are going to need the dates before they can determine their intent. the wife and i are planning a trip for the summer. other family members have to tailor their vacation scheduling around us.

Posted by: Blood red 914-6gt Nov 25 2007, 02:10 PM

I will be there whenever it is.

Posted by: JRust Nov 25 2007, 02:36 PM

I plan to be there but would be nice to figure the dates. Alot easier to plan vacation time for everyone once a date is set. I am close enough that isn't critical. For those who have a bit of a drive it will help

Posted by: Bleyseng Nov 25 2007, 03:43 PM

I plan on going unless the dates conflict with a vacation in the works too....

Posted by: Rand Nov 25 2007, 04:54 PM

Last I heard we were waiting to hear if we could piggyback with another group at SIR (the only way we can afford to get track time at an international raceway). If we can indeed get on the schedule at Pacific Raceways, that's a huge feature and will determine the date. If we cannot, then we need to just give up on the track day and nail down a date that makes the most sense with everything else going on. Either way, it is becoming painfully clear that we need to nail down a date ASAP so people can plan.

Posted by: jim_hoyland Nov 25 2007, 05:08 PM

Dates are critical.IE: I have to reserve vac time first week of Jan to guaranty the time off request.
