914World.com _ 914World Garage _ VIN database for 914's?

Posted by: Air_Cooled_Nut Dec 31 2003, 12:32 PM

Okay, I finally submitted my VIN to my profile. Are these automatically put into a database? If so, is there a way to access this database (searches or simple counts)?

I also looked at the http://www.914world.com/specs/productionnumbers.php and was surprised that less than 120,000 vehicles were produced! That's a lot less than what I expected and, in an elitest way, that's kinda neat that there aren't many around...poor man's close to the Miura laugh.gif

Funny, over 3 million VW Type III's were made but good luck finding new parts for it! Less than 120K 914's were made and parts (in particular, sheet metal and seals) are easy to find! Go figure blink.gif

yes, the VINs are in a database.
i could easily built a page where you can look them up/search ...

so, here's the question:

how would YOU (not just you, but all of us) like that page to function?

1) list all
2) list by year
3) ...

what else???

Andy

List buy year and seperate the 9146 vin's is my vote.

It also depends on how you are going to deal with additions as time goes on. Will it be live updates ?

This all assumes of course that the members have entered legitimate VIN numbers in their controls. cool.gif

Yep. 914043 is pretty easy to filter and 47xxx should be easy also.

i was searching for info on the vin numbers but couldnt find it, what do the numbers mean, for example mine: 4742900204

p.s. i like the vin database, found out mine was right around synthesisd's(4742900648)

914/4:

example 4702912181 =

4 = Model Number (914)
70 = Year
29 = some say factory code (karmann) ?
12181 = # for that year

the "big book" lists the /4 as follows:
47 = Model Number (914)
02 = Year, 02 = 70, 12 = 71, 22 = 72, 32 = 73, 42 = 74, 52 = 75, 62 = 76
912181 = # for that year, ignoring the leading 9

914/6:

example 9140430097 =

914 = Model Number (914)
0 = Year (0 = 70, 1 = 71, 2 = 72)
4 = Key# for Engine, 4 = 2.0L, 6 Cyl., 110 HP
3 = Key# for Body, 3 = Roadster
0097 = # for that year

I always thought it was:

47= type 47 - as in what VWPorsche called our beloved beasts

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 = designating the model year i.e. 1=71, 6=76

The difference is in the meaning of the '7'

Can anyone confirm which way is correct?

Happy New Year!!! Jeff

This "what does my VIN number mean" question comes up quite a bit...almost as much as "what tire size can I have if I want my speedo to be correct". Maybe on the VIN page or somewhere else, someone (Andy) can write a little program where a member can just add their VIN and it will parse all that info out for them and display it for all it's glory.....maybe??

Posted by: bernbomb914 Jan 1 2004, 02:58 AM

How do I input this Info? and where?

Bernie

Posted by: Brad Roberts Jan 1 2004, 03:01 AM

Bern,

go to the top of this page and go into "My controls" then go into "Edit profile"

You will see it there.

The 914club VIN database is way cool Andy... cool.gif

145 'member' 914 VINS are listed currently from around the world...

My recent analysis of the BAR database indicates about 7,000 to 8,000 914s should be surviving in California alone...

SO I WANNA KNOW WHERE ARE ALL THEY REST OF THEM HIDING!!!!????

Posted by: rdauenhauer Jan 1 2004, 04:45 PM

What about the section for known "destroyed" or crushed cars/VIN's?

Posted by: Bleyseng Jan 1 2004, 05:15 PM

Rich, thats known blowtorch.gif as "All others"

Geoff

could we add locations like city state for the cars, that way we can see who is in our area? Then I was thinking that if you click on the title of the column it puts it in order for that title. i.e. you click on 914/6 or 914/4 and they are put in order buy the actual number. Or if you click on member then they are but in order by the member name...etc. Then there could be one for location.

Andy, that's cool.

Is a section for condition too much? Restored, driver, parts car, recycled, wrecking yard...

yepp, there are a bunch of "doubles" in there. i figured it was people with more than one account.
if not, i suggest you contact that person through PM or email.

If we could get Rich at HPH to put in the VINs of all the parted cars he has there it would account for a fair percentage of them... laugh.gif

Posted by: Gint Jan 3 2004, 10:40 AM

When a new member registers, or an old member changes their VIN, the php script loads it into the db. Every time you load the VIN page, the php script queries the db.

So it's essentially live.
