914World.com _ 914World Garage _ OT any interest in a N. Ca. porsche get together?

Posted by: LarryR Nov 25 2007, 09:25 PM

I was thinking that it would be a lot of fun to have a N. Ca. porsche get together. Of course I have no idea of the details. I was thinking something along the line of all makes and models (both my 914's are currently in different stages of non opp)... hold it at some public park in the area and maybe have a bbq.

Any takers?

It's decided. Here's the details:

It's this Saturday if it's not raining, in Napa at Mark's shop (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=1739+Action+Ave+napa+ca&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=34.534108,63.28125&ie=UTF8&ll=38.306019,-122.286866&spn=0.008352,0.01545&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1) at 10:30 AM. The drive is about 2 hours long and we're having lunch at a cool roadside diner in Saint Helena (just north of Napa).

we missed the 07 sonoma run by 1 day (my son, kennys car dropped a valve) blink.gif . but as soon as the 2056 is built, in and running he'll be anixious to take it on a run. but realistically that will be a while. we built the case portion but we're still waiting on the cylinders. let me know down the road

If we get a good weather weekend, and we're supposed to, the 1st of Dec. is a good Saturday...before everything gets completely crazy....maybe make a run to the Santa Cruz mtns and try and drop by Felton and see some 959s if they're willing to let us....then back to Alice's for a late lunch...???? Or early dinner??? Or, drop down and come up the coast and have dinner at the brewpub in HMB/ Princeton....great beer and good food...

You sound just like my friend who lives in pacifica. He always has an excellent plan that outlines everything. That sounds great to me. I was thinking about posting the same over on the bird board too. The only thing I might like to throw in as a twist is a bbq. I can throw a cooler in my car and maybe a few others. It just seems that for a sizable crowd this might be a better option.

I figure porsche enthusiast is all that is required. If we manage to put this together just come in what is running and enjoy the cars.

Hey Larry,

Sounds like a great idea. If a date is picked and people have some notice I am sure we will have a decent turnout.

Well I did just receive my rebuilt, spaced rear calipers from Eric and they will be installed tomorrow..... Then there's the little issue with the blown motor.
I am selling my WR500 to help finance the engine. http://www.grubbenterprises.com Anyone need a really nice, powerful, dirt bike?

If it's in my backyard I will definitely be there. beerchug.gif

I can't make it this weekend, however. I'll be in LA.

I would be interested but need a date....holiday season makes it tough....Napa area would be great. Not too far from all of us and lots of places to meet and have lunch or similar.

let's BBQ at McMark's house!

Posted by: Jeff Bowlsby Nov 26 2007, 04:43 PM

How about a getting a group picnic site at Shadow Cliffs in Pleasanton or on Mt Diablo?

Posted by: smj Nov 26 2007, 04:54 PM

Sounds great. None of my p-cars are operational at the moment, but the 914-4 only needs a new muffler. Worse case I'll be on a motorcycle.

Sunday looks okay, Saturday's pretty iffy as I have a PCA thing at 6PM in Fremont.

It'll depend on the date and location, but I'd love to make it if I can.

That's Dec 8 or 9. It'll be about a 5-6 hour run from Napa back to Napa, FYI.

Ok I vote for Dec. 8.

Posted by: PRS914-6 Nov 27 2007, 12:17 AM

I could make either day but would suggest a shorter run, perhaps a couple of hours total? A 6 hour round trip + 2hours each way to\from is 10 hrs of driving. Not much time left for BS and tire kicking.

Mark, is there anything off Silverado Trail that's close?

Posted by: ChrisNPDrider Nov 27 2007, 02:44 PM

A while back krieger, roadglue, and others had some cool loops around Beryessa and those hills to share and the idea of a group drive was floated but I couldn't make it. If weather permits I would be psyched to get out and drive the 914 - caravans through the hills are awesome. 6-10 hrs is a bit much for me though...half a day + food & drinks is more like it beerchug.gif

Posted by: McMark Nov 27 2007, 06:42 PM

Okay, we'll come up with something shorter. wink.gif

Posted by: PRS914-6 Nov 29 2007, 09:40 AM

I would think that the closer we get to X-mas the more difficult it will get. What about this coming weekend? Perhaps unburden Mark of the BBQ duties (unless he likes it) and just meet at a winery for chow and tire kicking. Maybe Sattui's or similar, lots of outside picnic tables, parking, a deli etc.....just a thought.

Andy, if you can make it, I can bring your top with me....

I am actually flexible on the 8th or 9th ... I just picked the 8th because it is a saturday in case I get in late.

I can bring an extra bbq and help with the grilling as long as I can leave the grill and come back for it ... We could pick up some steaks from costco and maybe some boca burgers or something if there are vegitarians in the group.

I am flexible but trying to stay on the original proposal because if we flex a lot then we will continue to talk about it and it will end up not happening... beerchug.gif I am hoping lots of people turn out ... would be nice to put faces with names...

Hi Chris,
That car is now at McMark's (Original Customs) having the rest of the work done to it. I also picked up a '72 914 along the way. However, since none of my 914's run yet I will probably drive my 74 911 on the outing.

I hope you bring your black car it looked pretty good when you came over.

Mark and I met up in Napa today for a little bit and it sounds like next Saturday, the 8th works for him. Instead of doing a BBQ though, he suggested eating dinner at this cool road side diner/burger joint in St. Helena. The twisty part of my proposed route ends right at the place by chance, so that'd work out well.

There's not going to be a single day that works for everyone, so the best compromise is to just do this again soon on a day that works for most of the other people that can't make this one. Time is only going to get more scarce as the holidays approach, so it's sorta now or wait until mid-late Jan.

I also vote to cancel the event if it's going to rain next Saturday, but what do you say?

What time do people want to meet? Not too early please. smile.gif

I'm sure Andy wants his top.....

Help me out......are we going clockwise or counterclockwise on the proposed route? I'm thinking if the time works out, I can veer off at 128 and go home that way.

This is a little far our but I just set up a tour date with the Loma Preita PCA for April 12th. I'm trying to focus the tour for cars 25 years or older, 914's, 356's and early 911's.

The tour will be starting in San Juan Bautista (trying to get wash and shine judging on the Mission Square where Vertigo was filmed) and then a great trip down through the backroads around Hollister to the Pinnacles.

Picnic lunch and then back to San Juan. Gathering and dinner optional at the German Resturant in San Juan.

Tours of Canepa Design in Scotts Valley.

Let me know if any group is interested in touring Canepa Design. I am a backup tour guide if Bruce and Lou are unavailable and can lead a tour on most Saturdays (Sunday's are possible but more difficult to arrange).

Great tour with over 60 vehichles in the show area, shop floor and storage including the 935 Bruce originally drove for Porshe, an absolutely beautiful 917/30 and quite a few 956/962 porsches.

Check out www.canepa.com to see many of the vehicles.

Yeah, the details are buried in the middle somewhere.

It's this Saturday if it's not raining, in Napa at Mark's shop at 10:30 AM. The drive is about 2 hours long and we're having lunch at a cool roadside diner in Saint Helena (just north of Napa).

Yep, we'll send out an email early Saturday morning if things look spotty.

If anyone has questions that morning, they can call me on my cell phone at 707-529-7860

As of this morning, there is supposed to be quite a bit of rain on Thursday with showers ending Friday morning. We should be ok.

PS, I was at that event. It was the RoadGlue.com Winter tour where we had a 914 and Boxter collide on surface streets. It was a soggy, lousy mess of meet, though we still had a good time.

Yeah THAT was FUN! driving.gif That was the first look I had of your red car. aktion035.gif

Still remember the front wheel lockup on a downhill corner, wet roads and a slight chassis tweak will do that. That car has been on stands for over a year now...

Bump!

See ya folks tomorrow. Dug has confirmed that he'll be there in his Spec Miata.

I'll print out some route sheets tonight, just so I have something to pass out tomorrow. (it's tradition!)

Posted by: horizontally-opposed Dec 7 2007, 04:11 PM

Very excited to come, and it looks like I'll be bringing Ernie King, the guy who owned/built the silver 3.6 Six (and later 3.8) I wrote my first "real" article about.

He's since fallen to the dark side (new Z06) but is excited to see some 914s and, particularly, Paul Sayegh's car. He is who introduced Paul and I and is thus the reason that series is running in the magazine.

He's remains a huge 914 nut, so maybe we can lure him back in the fold.

I'm also excited to see Mark's place (*how* long have I been talking about getting up there...?), seeing some 914s, and hanging with some interesting folks...

Just don't hate on me cuz I won't be driving a 914, a-iit?

Paul,
Pete didn't drive it... He had lots of questions. In fact as a result of our discussion I think I will probably stay with the carbs. When I get it all dialed in I will contact Pete.
When you change everything, and you aren't an engineer, you have to expect that you will get something wrong. I did. Just small things but they take some of the fun out of the result. You can either give up and sell or change it. I will be changing it.
It is like the difference between your car and Andy's... Both '95 3.6 motors but one is a street stormer and the other borders on modern luxury with an attitude. Install a GPS in the dash and antilock brakes and your car is a Lexus in an old Porsche body.

The only time I got silly with it was that long straight towards the end. I think I hit about 125 - 130 just before mashing the brakes ... I did not know we were about to turn. I felt pretty stupid for doing it b/c (I am terrible with names) but the guy with the red 2.0 6 had a hard time stopping ... because as soon as I moved in front of him was when everyone got hard on the brakes. The turbo brakes with pagid pads work great but if the guy behind you does not have them .....

Shoot I was looking forward to getting something out of the shed smile.gif I just thought b/c you were riding around without heat maybe you could use a pair.

Sorry, I couldn't make it--Lisa and I were a little bit east of you guys. We had lunch in Woodland. We were, however, travelling at speeds that nothing but that twin-turbo could match. wink.gif

A co-worker of mine attended a little fly-in headed up there, and invited us along. It was just a little Cessna 172, but it was pretty nifty! The winds made the landing a bit interesting, but the trip was very nice. Our GPS now has a highest recorded speed of 179 MPH, which was set on the way back to Palo Alto airport with a hefty tail-wind.

Then I went to a friend's 42nd birthday party.

Hopefully I can make it next time!!

Andy,

I should see if I have the article on your car... My car has Dellortos, you have stock(ish) injection. You leave something on the table there but you also probably have more driveability as far as cold start etc... Plus, I bet you have a better emissions profile. I was listening to Pete and Mark talking about aftermarket injection. One would think you could get more out of your motor with ITB's and an aftermarket system. Most of these systems have pretty glaring limitations though. Those that don't cost a buck or say... TEN THOUSAND!!! I have full flow oiling, my guess is that you have a stock oil pump? Mine flows to an external oil filter mounted in one of the niftiest Original Customs mountings I have seen. Mark has pics. I have LE200 heads and you have stock I'd guess? Again, you leave a little on the table there. The LE heads in general are amazing. There is so much power in them alone. Jake picked the valve train. I don't even recall what cam it has.
I have actually seen your car driven in anger at a PCA event at Chuck Shultz... Even Steve Nieslony said you had the grunt on him at the end of the straights.
Bottom line though Andy, everyone knows red is faster than silver biggrin.gif

Sure was fun to be on a 914 drive, even if I was "stuck" driving a tail-dragger... biggrin.gif

Lunch was tasty + great roads and a nice, easy, and safe route = how could we go wrong? And it was fun to see some of the different 914s on hand. Shocked to see 10+ 914s and no orange ones. Has to be some sort of world record. Woulda loved to have driven Rob's silver car, and SirAndy's too. And was good to see the "other" Andy has made the move to five-lug Fuchs. His red car looks better than ever, and I still remember how well screwed together it felt when I drove it years ago.

And, hey, Paul's 914 3.6 even finished the route... (right back at ya, Paul.... happy11.gif )

My car passed smog 6 years ago with just the smog pump and NO cat! Just barely though. Right now the cam and heads are the limiting factors for my motor. Stock rev limiter/oil pump/valves. I did some porting in the exhaust port where the heat exchangers bolt up. Almost forgot, but a good friend of mine made a custom addition to my plenum instead of my temporary "adaptor" for my volvo throttle body. Loss of that restriction got me 5 horses on the dyno. Rob, next time I'd like you to drive my car.beer3.gif

Andy,

I would be honored. Watching yours and discussing that "extra grunt" with Steve Nieslony at Charles Schultz a couple years ago was part of the inspiration to build mine... I am glad I did...
