914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Dr. Evil Does The West Coast (now with a review)

Posted by: Trevorg7 Dec 12 2007, 10:39 PM

This is now on! Details below.

Here are our thoughts. Mike and I have talked off and on recently about my tail to side shift transmission conversion and I quickly realized that I lack the skills and tools required to complete this job successfully. While we were talking about shipping my transmission out to him, I floated the idea of having him come to the west coast; many reasons to do so but one being my transmission.

If there is enough interest in Mike’s expertise (meaning people would pay to learn from him), Mike has offered to put on a clinic during his stay, price TBD, and teach, lead, and help the attendees with their fixes, rebuilds, and conversions.

Here is what we know for sure.

Place: 6890 Lenwood Way San Jose, CA 95120; Cell 408-499-0443
Date: January 4th and 5th
Start Times: Noon on Friday and 9am on Saturday
Provided: Beer (kegerator stocked with Kona’s Longboard Lager), driveway/garage space, compressor, limited (4) jack stands, some tools, etc.
Who: Observers are free. If you cannot attend you may still drop your transmission off for work (contact Mike for cost/parts/etc). Participation is welcome (contact Mike for cost/parts/etc)

Mike will also be bringing discount parts out with him. No 1st gear stuff however as he currently does not have any in stock. Additionally, Mike has a cash of core trannies that can be purchased directly from him. Shipping is approximately $80 via Greyhound.

I am sure many can attest to Mike’s expert skills, this is a once is a ‘residency life time’ opportunity.

Keep the questions coming.

Hmm, yeah, I might come down. Cool!

I am always up for learning something new. How much are you thinking per person? Would this be a 'how to rebuild' or how to convert to side shift...

I have a tail shifter I could bring down.

Are the side shifters that much better?

Yes and yes. If you want to convert then the best time is during a rebuild. If you just want to convert, we can accommodate that too. Side shifters are better, inherently. If you want to stay stock and do tail shifter that is also possible. Price right now is up int he air depending on how many say they will show. A lot of people = low cost and visa versa. It will be no more than $300 a head at the most, but comments about the price are welcome if anyone thinks it unfair. I figure I usually charge $500 for labor for a rebuild, this way you would at least save $200 + shipping + I am bringing some cheap parts so you could get a tranny done for dirt cheap relatively. The cores are all side shift + 1 tail and are $200 each. I will have some synchro bands, teeth, and 2-5 sliders. Do not worry that I do not have 1st as after I am done with you you will easily be able to do 1st gear as it is the last thing you put on and is very straight forward.

Please keep the questions and comments coming biggrin.gif

Posted by: roadster fan Dec 12 2007, 11:36 PM

I am definitely interested. I don't need a rebuild right now, but if I can find a good core locally I guess I would have a rebuilt ready to go spare on hand. Hmmm, i could get a side shifter and convert when the tailshifter goes down......

Keep us posted on price, and which date you choose.

Thanks,

Jim

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 12 2007, 11:40 PM

The dates all depend on you guys. I am off only from 2-6 and have to be in class and alert on the 7th (so 2-4 or 5th is good for me).

Posted by: RoadGlue Dec 12 2007, 11:49 PM

I have two good boxes right now, so I don't need to do a rebuild. I'd love to just swing in to watch and learn though (if that's allowed).

I dont know how we are gonna work that. I have to do what is fair for those that would pay. I really hate to say no to anyone, but we will see. If I get 10 committed for $100 bucks/ea (if we can fit 10) then it would be more doable. At the very least, we will all have to meet up after one of the days and have a beer. There are a few of you the I have yet to meet. beerchug.gif beer3.gif

People are welcome to go in on a tranny together and split the cost!

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 12 2007, 11:59 PM

I was just thinking about this further and here is a deal:
$600 = tranny core shipped to you, the class helping you to rebuild it, any of the used good core parts that I have in my stash that it would need. Is that not a smoking deal? This is first come first served as I have limited supplies of trannies and parts. All that you would need to get extra is; 1st gear synchro teeth, 1st gear slider, and a seal kit (I always recommend getting a new synchro band for 1st since it is hit the hardest). These parts are available for the ridiculously low price of $525 from Auto Atlanta. I can not beat those prices so I defer to them. Maybe George will make a group buy discount if you all band together. If you dont buy the set up from AA I will add a seal kit to the package.

For other parts you thin you may need, contact me first as I have a direct supplier and may be able to get you stuff at a discount. You will all need a seal kit idea.gif

Posted by: LarryR Dec 13 2007, 12:01 AM

Heres a question for you... Have you thought about coming up with a side shifter conversion for the 915?

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 13 2007, 12:09 AM

I have plans for a very inexpensive cable shifter for the 901 that I do not have time to produce, the 915 is a different story. The Wevo kit is the best that there is and that is why it costs you your first born. I do have some rough ideas on the drawing board, but I do not have the free time to explore them further. Most likely it will be a few years (like 4) before I get that kind of time. Most likely it will be cable first as that makes it a bit easier and I can base it off of the same technology I am using in the 901 cable shifter design. It is so simple I expect many to be amazed.

Posted by: scrz914 Dec 13 2007, 12:20 AM

I'm intrigued as well.
I have a tailshifter I would like to convert to a sideshifter.

So, $300 pays for Dr. Evil's tutaledge? How much more would the parts add up to if you're doing a rebuild?
What if we pay the $300 but aren't able to do the rebuild there because of a shortage of parts (assuming an overwhelming turnout)?
What if we pay the $300, get into our tranny and find it's beyond repair?

Can we be guaranteed a rebuilt tranny when we leave?

All in all, seems like a good oppurtunity.

Roadster Fan, If I don't go this route, I would have a core tailshifter to sell you.

Good questions!

There should be no shortage of parts if the price is $300. At 10 people there may be, but I doubt it.

Here is the deal: When you rebuild the tranny you usually have 4th and 5th teeth and bands that are in great shape as these get beat on less due to their gearing. 3rd is often fine as well and I tend to swap 3rd and 5th. This = 3 perfectly fine gears that will last a long time. The 4-5 slider hardly ever wears out, but I have plenty of replacements. The 2-3 slider sometimes wears out on the 2nd gear side if the tranny was previously assembled and not adjusted correctly. Again, no prob. So we are left with you needing 2nd teeth and synchro. Easy enough. The only common thing that would cause me to advise you just to get another tranny is if your pinion shaft is galled. This is a PITA and time consumer that would not be worth it to fix as the cost in time is prohibitive. I cant help it if your tranny turns out to be shit once I get there, but I can help you figure that out right now biggrin.gif Go to my rebuild link in my signature and see how to pull the stack. Once the stack is pulled then you can inspect the pinion and know if you need to source a new core.

If you check your tranny out, and it is not galled then you will have a rebuilt tranny LESS 1st gear as stated, unless you bring the parts. If you have a good core and 1st gear parts + seal kit I will have the rest and you will have a rebuilt tranny.

How much more for parts? Dog teeth are about $140 new, I may be able to get them for less should anyone want (like $135), but the used ones I have are $50. The used sliders for this affair will be $50 (new is $200 or so), and the synchro bands are $20 (new is $66). If you want, you can pre order new synchro bands (I really recommend only ordering 2 or 3 as 4-5 hardly ever need it).

If there is some unforeseen occurrence (like your differential bearings are toast which has only happened once in over 100 rebuilds ( dry.gif ) then I will work with you to get things taken care of with out any further incurred cost other than parts. I will back up what is rebuilt at the lecture! I will be doing Q/A on all of them. If one has an issue in the future and it is due to the rebuild then I will fix it at no charge. I will give tips on installation as this is where the user can booger up a good tranny (again, only happened once).

How does all that sound? Please keep the questions coming. idea.gif

Posted by: ChrisNPDrider Dec 13 2007, 01:16 AM

SO can I bring a tailshift transaxle, remove the core, change gear ratio + worn bits, pay you some bills, then re-install that gear set into a sideshift case that I also have at home? w00t.gif
I think I may need some used gears to make MSX...If I decided to do this I will be searching for all those gear threads. If I can't make it to the re-build-along then hopefully I could cruise the 914 down during lunch break beerchug.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 13 2007, 01:22 AM

Sure. The trannies will be completely torn apart so swapping gears will be no issue. I may even have an MSX set in my 912 tranny. I will have to see what price is right for them. If you want, you can even drop your tranny off and have it rebuilt on the spot (for a few more $$ biggrin.gif ). BTW, the tailshift and side shift cases are identical wink.gif You could more easily take the side and tail to me and have me convert it for ya if you wont be there. Otherwise, you can do it at the same time with hardly any extra effort.

All you need are:
- Shift rods and forks
- Shift console
- Tail cone (not necessary, but aesthetically better looking as you dont have the tail shift part dangling loose)

I currently have a set of these parts, but supplies are limited.
Dont forget, you will need external bits to install and use the side shifter:
-Shift linkage from the shifter all the way back to the tranny.
-Side shift engine bar

So far I have one person that will commit that contacted me via PM. Any others? Trevor, when do we have to get the tickets by?

Are there any concerns what so ever about this event? Please voice any and all complements and concerns so they may be addressed.

I have a rebuilt tranny (Done by B about 2 years ago) Smooth shifting now, but it's never quite stopped leaking. B says he knows which seal needs replacing, but doesn't ever seem to have the time to look at it for me. End result is it sits in my garage slowly leaking vulcan blood. So.. I don't need a rebuilt or a conversion, but could definately use some tranny advice and help. Not sure where that falls in with regards to your tranny clinic...

Jen

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 13 2007, 04:56 PM

I am always available via here, PM, email for tranny advise. I get emails with questions frequently and help folks fix their problems. Yours should be a simple fix and you could do it yourself. If I am able to come out we can tackle it no prob, no charge. Thats simple. Where is it leaking from? I have the seal most likely unless it is the speedo drive. Those seals are easy to get.

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 13 2007, 05:59 PM

Is it the cost that is stopping many of you from committing? How many would show up for sure if cost was not a factor? Help me help you piratenanner.gif

Posted by: TedK Dec 13 2007, 06:11 PM

I would welcome the opportunity, but I can't pull my tranny that soon. Also, can a six be converted to side shift? Would like to keep the original tranny with 911 part # if thats possible.

TedK

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 13 2007, 06:14 PM

Yes, a /6 tranny can be converted the same as a/4, but you would not need the engine bar afterwards smile.gif

Posted by: TedK Dec 13 2007, 06:18 PM

Cool. As stated, the event is a little too soon for me. Now, if this was in late February I would be a yes.

Cheers

Ya, it appears that this is short notice for many, which is understandable. It was a crazy idea that Trevor had and I was down for it. We are gonna let this thread ride for a bit longer to see if any interest is generated. If not we can reschedule. I need input either way from all interested parties.

Posted by: scrz914 Dec 13 2007, 07:34 PM

I'll commit if you are able to bring parts for a tailshift to side shift conversion as well.

Shift Rods and Forks
Shift Console
Nosecone

My thinking is, rebuild my tailshifter and convert. Wait for my funds to renew, then do 1st and reverse. Then stick it in my '73. Pull my orginal tranny and rebuild it when I can (hopefully remembering the rebuild process).

I'll commit and my friend wants to know if he can bring his 915 ... if not he might pull his 69 911 trans and come.

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 13 2007, 08:00 PM

Well thats what I am talking about! that makes 3 (I have a PM customer) @ $300 each which is totally doable. The 915 would be kind of a distraction for me, I would rather not. Maybe we can do some little things on the side after the formal class, but we would have to play it by ear. Tony, I have those parts. PM me and we can talk price for them and I can get them out to you before hand so you have them ready.

Posted by: jesiv Dec 13 2007, 08:27 PM

I think this is a great idea! But, right now rebuilding my transmission is not high my priority list. However, a unique learning experience with the opportunity to observe and possibly help would be of great value. I live in RWC and would love the attend if you offer something like this.

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 13 2007, 08:41 PM

Maybe I should do a lower price for those just wanting to attend and take notes? What do the two committed parties think about that? I want to get as many people there as possible and not just for the revenue smile.gif

Posted by: banger Dec 13 2007, 08:48 PM

I would be interested in coming, if you get enough to make the $100 price. I could also bring some side shift engine mounts if anyone is in need of them.

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 13 2007, 09:06 PM

Flight plans are in the works! piratenanner.gif I can bee there and ready by the 3rd and need to be done by the 5th so I can leave on the 6th. Hows that sound to ya'll? this is gonna be fricken awesome!

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 13 2007, 09:20 PM

Tony, Larry, you guys are the two who have committed publicly (I'll ask the one PM candidate late), how would you feel about people just attending with no transmission for free? You guys are paying and will get your trannies done, the rest would be taking notes and observing. Does this sound fair to you? I am cool with it if you guys and any perspective rebuilders are.

Fine by me.

Also, I would like to buy the side shifter parts from you too as well as 912 gears. This trans is going to go into my track car... so the shorter the better.

I was wondering how much for those parts from you... Do you want us to paypal the $ to you or pay on arrival.

Larry

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 13 2007, 09:58 PM

You da man! No money yet. Once the flight is confirmed we can discuss that. Right now it is looking like I will be there at about 1930 on the 3rd and be leaving 1155 on the 6th. I am going to get home at 2250 and then drive for 2 hours and then have class at 0700 in the morning, but you guys are worth it biggrin.gif

I will consider the 912 gears yours and will look into a price for them. I will see if I have another set of side shifter bits. I may be able to scrounge some if I dont have them in my stash. I'll get ya'll prices on those too. PM me for prices and payment for parts.

I didn't drink a single beer at the last 914 gathering so i am thirsty beerchug.gif
Count me in right now, and whether or not I bring my extra trans kinda depends on if I can figure out a cool and economical AX close-ratio swap.

OK - studied the old threads - Thanks Aaron beerchug.gif

A-F-flipped ZD-flipped V-ZD

That combo would mean I need an extra 5th gear set, ZD. So Dr., know anybody that has tried this gear combo? Too big a 4->5 jump?

I have a 1.7 that I keep at 4-6k rpm during a race. 13 lb flywheel and 911 clutch disc.

Any advice is appreciated. beerchug.gif

Chris, asking someone to advise you on gearing would be like asking me to try on a pair of pants and tell you how they will fit you. Its kind of hard. The best thing to do is to ask one who has driven that set up and see how they liked it. Also, after this session you will be fearless in changing your gears so if you dont like it you can swap a different set in. I have spare ZD sets if you need for cheap. PM if you want 'em.

Posted by: roadster fan Dec 14 2007, 01:41 AM

I'm definitely in. Now it is just a matter of whether I will be there as an observer, or as a rebuilder?

I will have to determine the total cost to obtain a core and the necessary bits to convert to sideshift if all I can find is a tailshifter. I don't see a reason to stay tailshifter as everything I have read indicates the sideshifter is the way to go.

I have a good tranny now, but know nothing about it (new car to me) and who knows how long it will last. Let me start checking around on a core transaxle (anyone have one they wanna sell cheap? or anyone wanna go in on one for the experience of rebuilding one? Hmmm?)

I will let you know shortly. Oh, and January 4th is my birthday, Happy Birthday to me I get to hang out with crazy NARP owners, woohoo!

Work days will be Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th (details have been added to the first post in this thread). Dr. Evil has to get back to class Monday AM so he flys home on Sunday mid-morning. I would assume you could complete the work in one day. I do not believe the doctor wants to tackle 915s during this trip.

PM Dr. Evil Directly to determine cost, parts needed, etc.

Thanks

Some answers:

- You can get it done in one day, but with me teaching and answering lots of questions it will be a loooong day so be prepared. I am willing to start in late morning on Fri if that is cool with Trevor. I also work late biggrin.gif

- Cost thus far is $300 for the class if you bring a tranny and I help you rebuild it. If anyone wants to stop by and bring a gear stack just to be diagnosed then no charge. I always diagnose for free.

- Observers are encouraged and welcome for free.

- No 915 this time. I think about 3 people have asked me, though so maybe in the future.

TWO THINGS TO DO BEFORE I GET THERE:

1) Drain your tranny! Please. Do not bring full trannies to the clinic. IF, you can not get those dang plugs out to drain it dont fret, just bring the nasty beast to the clinic and I will get the plug out, but please bring a container with you for the oil so you can take it home biggrin.gif

2) Pull your gear stack out following the instructions in my "tranny rebuild" link in my signature. Do this so you can inspect the pinion shaft teeth. If they are galled you will need another core and I would hate to waste your time. If you can not do this, let me know so we can work something out ahead of time to prepare for the wost.

Rob, I PMed you about parts and such. Feel free to ask me questions so we can get you set up.

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 14 2007, 01:50 PM

Oh ya, since the flight has been booked and this it a definite I am now accepting payment for the clinic. If you are a definite and wish to be confirmed then please contact me for payment instructions.

If you are looking for parts contact me 1st and see if I can get them cheaper. For 1st gear stuff get the kit from AA.

I just did some research on gears for those of you that contacted me about wanting to customize.

I talked to Glenn at Carquip, real nice guy with great customer service skills, and they have what you need. The gears are not all cheap, though.

For short stack
M - Used $325
S - NOS $535, used $450
X - Used $325

For the V8 dudes
H - Used $325

Hey Bill,
No r/p work this time around. Perhaps in the future I can do an advanced class for just that? However, if you attend this clinic you will easily be able to figure out how to swap the r/p on your own.
I look forward to seeing you there!

FYI, I always like to switch out the old hardware (13mm nuts and washers) with new stainless gear. I plan on providing this to all of the tranny rebuilders (included with price of admission), but to order the right amount I need ya'll to register ASAP. Also, I intend on providing brake cleaner, brushes and some lube for assembly. I am gonna have to get Trevor to hit the dollar store before I get there. You guys will need to bring safety glasses, 13, 14, 19, 10mm sockets and lots of questions. Cardboard would be a good thing too as well as chairs and any portable tables you want to use other wise I figure we will be on the floor (old school) thumb3d.gif thumb3d.gif

Mike - Give me a shopping list and I'll get some of that stuff; brake cleaner, brushes, lube, etc. I am sure the TSA will look at you funny if you are flying with lube and a wire brush! WTF.gif

I should be okay with Cardboard - after Santa comes - and I've got six to eight chairs as well as a card table. I don't have enough tools for everyone so please bring the requested sockets, safety glasses (safety is no accident - always wanted to say that LOL).

Definitely bring those. I need to source a set for Trevor. I forgot to include them in my parts list for his side shift (duh). Are you going to come and watch?

Posted by: David_S Dec 15 2007, 02:44 PM

Dr. Evil ....I would love to be able to make it out , but just a tad bit too far west for me right now. I do have a tranny that needs a friend though. It is out of my 76 parts car. When I drove it, everything shifts and feels fine, or at least I thought it did, but it will not stay in 5th gear. Had to have a buddy ride with me to hold it in. Could this be an easy fix for some one that has never been into one of these trannys before ??? Maybe I can hang on to it, and if something gets put together a little bit further east, then maybe I could attend a session.

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 15 2007, 03:17 PM

Hey David,
"Easy" is a relative concept wink.gif It is less invasive than some other issues you could have. First things first, click my tranny rebuild link below in my signature and go through the check list of possible external causes for your problem. It is rare for 5th to go out. In 99.9% of the trannies I have worked on (a lot) 5th is practically new.

For the future, I am not sure if I will be making it out to TX. The nest clinic will likely be in VA or MD.

Posted by: euro911 Dec 15 2007, 04:20 PM

Popping out of 5th sounds more like a shifter-rod/linkage issue ...

Posted by: jaybird840 Dec 15 2007, 04:31 PM

Evil,
I see a nationwide tour in the future. Maybe a poll to see whose interested in a specific part of the country? I'm pretty sure that if you planned it far enough out, a third coast clinic (Dallas/Ft. Worth, Austin, Houston, San Antonio) in one of those locales would prolly sell out. Do it in the break between spring and summer terms... Just a thought

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 15 2007, 04:56 PM

Houston is a possibility as one of my best friends (the guy who taught me how to rebuild my 1st tranny) lives there. biggrin.gif As for future breaks, who knows if I'll even got one. I am always open to the idea, though.

Dumb question, cuz I haven't been here that long... Would that be Red Beard? Seems like I read a tranny rebuild thread by him some time ago. I thought he was in H-town, and thought about trying to dig him up, and see if he would do a personal tutorial. I'd really prefer to rebuild my own box.... Great to see you doing something like this. Good Karma comin your way.....

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 15 2007, 09:13 PM

Yup, thats him. He is way busy these days so I am not sure if he would be available for a tutorial. He doesnt even have time to hang out here. sad.gif I talked to him 2 days ago. He does a lot of traveling for business and thats why he is never around.

Posted by: koozy Dec 16 2007, 04:35 AM

Hey, I just found this thread and would love to go. I have a spare side shift but lacking the funds so I'll just be an observer. Well, I don't even know what parts I would need. I'll click on the link and take the first steps as you said and I'll go from there. Maybe I'll come up with some cash by then. If someone needs a practice tranny, you could always rebuild mine..... av-943.gif I bet I could come up with the money for parts then... (beg, borrow.... ) happy11.gif

Thanx, Dr., for coming out. Sounds like it will be a blast.

Boa

Getting stuck between R and 5 is a weird issue considering they are not connected in the box. I would check your shift linkage bushings and all related external hardware first. If you click my tranny rebuild link in my sig line below it will run you through what to check. If you bring the gear stack to have it diagnosed that is fine, but if you are going to rebuild it then you will need to register and pay the clinic fee. As for start, I plan on being ready for anyone who wants to show up starting about noonish on Fri. People do not need to be there both days, but I recommend it. If you can only make one then come on Sat and plan on a long day (8-10hrs) depending on what we have to work with. Feel free to PM me about your tranny issues and I will try to help you out (or start a new thread) biggrin.gif

Kevin, thats a great idea. I can try to plan extra days when I interview and can interview at places where there are enough people for a clinic. That will help me recoup lots of my travel costs and such....maybe I'll even be able to afford to move back left. dry.gif

Koozy, I'll PM you and see if we can work somethign out on the honor system or something. I dont want people who really want to learn to miss out because of the timing of the clinic thumb3d.gif

Hi Boa - I am sure you can bring down the transimission, just work out the detail with Dr. Evil (PM him). It is a bit of a drive from OR but I am sorry I cannot put you up. The extra room is taken by Dr. Evil.

Mike,

I cannot be there to participate in your great knowledge and "free wheeling" transmission clinic. The next best thing is to see if I can purchase a complete rebuilt transmission directly from you. I need the transmission match the power bands of a 1987 3.2 Carrera engine. I would like the intermediate section to be new as well as the gears to match the foregoing needs. Hope this activity will help you and me int each of our 914 endeavors.

Our Good "Doctor Evil" does a great job on these transaxles.

Let me know if you can build me a transaxle along the general guide lines as outlined above. If you want to provide the basic core, and build from there, it is ok by me.

Thanks,
Steve Hurt

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 16 2007, 11:34 PM

Can do, Steve. I have cores available. What gearing where you thinking? Do you want it to mirror a certain tranny; 915, 930, etc? PM me and we can work out the details. smile.gif

Posted by: shoguneagle Dec 17 2007, 04:21 AM

Mike,

I have not really given it total thought and will need your experience in setting the gears, etc. I think it should match the gearing of the 915 transaxles for proper performance (street, not racing). I would like the 5th gear to give good fuel economy. I would probably have an external pressure oil system therefore installation of oil jets, etc. Have only seen pictures of this convertion, need additional thoughts. I will spend some time this next week to try to determine additional thoughts and specifics.

I am not in any hurry on this so the project is subject to your time frames. I will PM you in a week or so when I can gather my thoughts on this project.

Thanks,
Steve Hurt

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 17 2007, 04:46 PM

In other tranny news: I was doing the math to see how close I could get the 901 gearing in 4 speed set up (locked out 1st) to the 930 box and I was amazed at how close I got it and how inexpensive it is. All that is required is, normal 2, 3, flipped stock 3rd, flipped H gear. This is a great setup for big /6 and V8s.

Posted by: echocanyons Dec 18 2007, 02:11 PM

I am sure that this can be found an a thousand different threads but it might also be a good addiation to this one.

What is the stock gear configuration for the 914/4?

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 18 2007, 02:34 PM

Not a problem at all:
A - 11:34
F - 18:34
N - 23:29
V - 27:25
ZD - 31:22

R/P is 7:31

Alrighty, I have a box of stainless nuts and bolts headed to your house, Trevor biggrin.gif

I may just start shipping parts to you, too. I just went through my enormous stash of parts and I found that I have a few usable 1st sliders if anyone is in need. I'll be shipping them and a bunch of synchro teeth, syncro bands, bearings, sliders...etc.

I gutted my 912 tranny to get the MSX gears so they can go out soon. We had blackouts for the last few days so shipping has been slow. Ice storms are Mother Natures way of saying, "Live somewhere else!" dry.gif

Hey Rob,
From what I can see in your pics, 1st looks to bee in great shape. I cant tell what the slider is like, but the synchro teeth look good and the synchro band looks to be barely abused which = the rest of the parts are probably in great shape. Be happy!

well, my tranny is slightly apart right now and pending re-assembly (just the shift linkage portion) by mid-next week. So hopefully I won't need your help. But I'm still planning on stopping by either Fri or Sat for a little lookey-loo. Have a safe trip out next week, Doc!

I have 2 sets of shift rods for side shifters just sitting in a drawer, and at least one good nosecone available for those doing a tail-side conversion (second nosecone is OK, but the ears have been welded back on welder.gif ). What I need is the shifter parts for a 912, plus the nosecone. Anyone want to trade? beerchug.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 27 2007, 07:43 PM

Mike,
I have the parts you need for the 912, but I also have all the side shifter parts. I have 2 full sets currently available. If you want to chat about the 912 parts, drop me a PM. smile.gif

i have been lurking here trying to figure out if this is where i need to go to get my tranny working right...i have a '72 1.7 tailshifter that got a new synchro and slider when i bought the car a couple years ago....my problem seem to be going from 3 to 4 and back...usally get some grinding trying to find one gear or the other....i have a feeling it could be linkage and was thinking converting to a side shifter may cure the problem...what do you think?

That sounds like an external problem as 4th has a different slider than 3rd and to go from one to the other you need a competent external shifter assembly: bushings, cone screws, etc. Also, 3rd and 4th seldom wear out before 1st and 2nd. Click on my tranny rebuild link below and read the check list of possible external problems to check.
I am a fan of the side shifter setup, but a properly maintained tail shifter can be made to shift fine. If you want to convert, I have the side shift internals for ya. You will still need to source the shifter assembly from the stick to the tranny, the engine bar, mounts from the engine to the bar, and mounts from the bar to the chassis. It sounds like a lot, but it is not too hard to find these parts.
Feel free to stop by and watch. If you decide before hand that you want to rebuild your tranny, please let me know so I can plan accordingly.

Mike, No I have not sourced the motor mounts but I was going to drive up to HPH next week. I did pick up the tranny from Greyhound and it is resting in the garage. I also received a box of nuts/bolts.

we have a good 72 tail shifter sitting aside, if any one has a good tranny in their teener but wants an immediate builder they are welcome to use mine and then "swap" me back when they install the rebuilt (within a reasonable time)

Mike I just got this box but its only 29lbs...LOL.

Damnit mad.gif

I knew they would goof it up....the PO guy was like, "dont worry." I have a bag of nuts and bolts in there that is likely leaking....definitely need to get another box to make sure everyone is covered. Maybe I will sell some to the looky-loos biggrin.gif

Ya, could you check that the special tools are still in there? That is my major concern.
- 30mm deep socket
- triple square hex bit
- Deep 14mm socket

A dime size hole only worries me about the bottom two. The 30mm is a big sucker. Feel free to open it, check out the contents, arrange them in various geometric patterns on your garage floor, etc. Let me know.

I should have some time tomorrow before work to get some of it apart after cleaning, I will let you know tomorrow afternoon.

Mike, I'm in a bit of a pickle. (well, not really, but I like to quote Flanders whenever possible)

My shift console seal was leaking. Brad removed the part and took it with him (the replacement seal he had was rusted out, so he was gonna replace it with a new one), so now it's in SD. He was planning on driving up and putting it back together on Wed or Thur, but now it looks like he's not plan on coming back for over a week. So it kind of makes it hard for me to drive my *completed* car to the tech session, and it also makes it hard for me to drive my leaky car to the tech session for you to help me with it. Car's on jack stands without a shift console. So I probably won't be able to make it. Pretty bummed. My hands (and tranny) are kind of tied.

Is this a quick fix that I can get the part from you on Friday, slap it back together friday night, and come hang out with teeners on Saturday?

Jen

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 1 2008, 10:27 PM

Which seal is it? Is it the one that goes on the shaft in the console? If so I have a spare and can change it in 30min or less. No worries. smile.gif Also, I can bring a spare or I know some others may have spares.

Tick-tock, I'm getting excited now that my test is done, I've had time to get drunk and wake up biggrin.gif

Posted by: ChrisNPDrider Jan 2 2008, 03:24 PM

Dude, this gear stack stuff is easy biggrin.gif
Way less work than I anticipated!
I've got my recently rebuilt sideshift case+ still in the car with the gear stack removed and boxed up for transport. The rear seal remains intact and perfect, I can't bring it to show and tell but I may not need to replace it (comments?). This will be my "master gear stack" to get a new ratio.
Also visible is my tailshift core with gear stack loose and cleaning in progress. I plan to throw it all in the back of the Suby wagon so I will have the entire core to strip parts from if needed. This shifted REALLY good into first gear while rolling, so I could be persuaded into selling 1st gear parts to attendees or to the good Dr. for class $$$ credit. I'm a CSOB 914 racer/cruiser and it would help to re-coup some costs beerchug.gif

You know you are having fun when………. you have to pound metal with a hammer, drill out stripped bolts to salvage a part, wondering which core is worth rebuilding, finding out the part you have is NLA... fortunately the other core has a good used part, flying metal… or just optimizing the parts you have to achieve the best performance and having it explained and shown to you…

Totally Awesome!! Sorry to yell but it was great.

James

So far so good with Dr. Evil and the transmission rebuild! What a great opportunity to learn and rebuild! All of us rebuilt our gear stacks yesterday under the Evil Eye TM and direction, and the Dr. really knows what he's doing. I highly recommend his work. You really need to know your way around or else you'll be rolling the ball of pain. Its not hard to take things apart, but assembly is a puzzling feat the first time.

Trevor and his family are very kind to let us use his garage. We were packed in there pretty tight but it didn't seem to matter because we were all working away. The 914 group there was awesome too.

Today is the finish reassembly of transmission with all the seals!

Great event! Great information! The Dr. is highly recommended. aktion035.gif

beerchug.gif That was fun!

On the rear shift linkage: I don't have a spare handy, but you're welcome to use the one from my '71 while the engine is out, parts have been back-ordered, so it may be a while till I need it.

The closest one I have is in Angwin in a car that needs to be converted from tail shift. Another long-term project... welder.gif (The 1.7 ran, needs a battery tray and paint.)

What a great event! Thanks to everyone for being so friendly and welcoming. Dr. Evil definately knows what he's doing and also likes to share his knowledge. I think as a group we got a total of at least seven (?) transmissions rebuilt in two days. Personally, I learned a ton. Also, special thanks to Trevor and his family for putting up with everyone and letting us take over their garage and for just being so hospitable in general. Kevin

What a great time. Dr. Evil certainly knows his stuff and is great to hang with. Thank you to him and everyone for making this a great event. Indeed seven transmissions were broken down and rebuilt.

Now that I am awake and no longer drunk here are a few more thoughts about the event. If you are going to do this in the future....

1. Have tons of rags and towels. This job is very messy and the gear oil gets everywhere.

2. Set up a decent area to drain the trannys

3. Space! It didn't help us that we had the worst weather (for California) in 30 years but a 1/2 of a garage for 10-12 guys and 7 transmissions is pretty tight.

4. Tools. I have an okay set of tools but Dr. Evil needs some specific stuff; 1/2 inch breaker bars, jigs, lots of rubber mallets, lots of 13 and 14 sockets, deep 30 socket, tourch, a couple of vices, etc. Dr. Evil can add to this I am sure but my 'tv repair man' set of tools didn't cut it.

5. 10-12 hours. Set aside parts of two days to get this done if done in a clinic format.

6. Clean, clean clean. One of the most painstaking thing was cleaning - I am an expert as Mike can attest av-943.gif Clean what you can before you come to the clinic and have good drip trays at each work station to clean parts.

I am sure I'll think of more information to pass on after I am not so hung over.

Thank you again to all the participants and observers. And especially Mike for coming out and putting this on. aktion035.gif

7 transmissions!
smile.gif

Great. Thats the way Herr Doktor!
Your gonna end up running a free clinic somewhere (real docterin') with this kinda attitude. I'll bet it was the most fun that could be had while rebuilding a transmission.
Great for hosting Trevor, and taking and posting pics. Great seeing everyone (including the kids) involved! Of course, thanks for orchestrating it all, Mike. It looked like a good time from this side of the country. Yep, 914 people are just weird.

I was surprised and pleased with the weekend - surprised and pleased at how often I got to use my hammer smash.gif
Our gears were in good hands with Dr. Evil in the house. Trevor and family deserve thanks again for hosting! I really enjoyed meeting all the new folks, talking race stories with Rob and Bill, getting and giving help, and of course, the beer beerchug.gif
For those absent, here's what I remember as a typical conversation:
Lost wrencher "Hey Dr. Evil, where does this thing go?"
Dr. Evil "Why don't you bend over and I'll show you."
smile.gif
It'll be 2-3 more days until I get back to work on 914 stuff. My ride to Kirkwood is heading here now. We should have 8-10 FEET of powder to play in for the next 2 days. WHEEEEEEEEE

What a trip! As far as my life goes, this was an epic undertaking that generated memories and friendships that I will cherish until my brain unit goes on the fritz. smile.gif

7 - trannies, at least 10 people in the garage at a time, 2 tail to side conversions, one box changed to a 4 speed with locked out 1st and F, N, flipped N, flipped H gearing to mimic a 930 for a 3.2, one box re-geared for shorter shifts by Chris. Also, the almost complete conversion of Trevor's car to side shift....it would have been a COMPLETE conversion if I would have shipped the right shift bar (duh).

I got back into Baltimore at 11:15PM and was home asleep by 3am....and had to get up to be in class (where I am now) by 8am....I iwll post more comments at a later date...I need sleep.

I do want to say that I feel very lucky to have been able to have done this and it would not have been possible if it were not for Trevor and his freakin awesome family. It was his idea, generosity and his family that enabled this to happen. I have made some new friends through this and that is priceless smile.gif

What a great time I had in San Jose, All that I had expected and more. Lot of knowledge and bad gas in a small area. I would do this again in a heart beat, and get to test myself working of a couple of tranny's in my herd.

Great Job Dr. Evil and Trevor's wife for putting up with the heathens.

Okay, I might be the first, from the clinic, to install and drive my Dr. Evil rebuilt transmission and Oh My Gawd it is amazing!

I did a complete Tail to Side shift conversion which included motor mount bar, mounts (inner/outer), tail cone, shift linkage, shifter and internals. We put in a new 1st gear and 1st gear slider (really Mike did it, I watched and learned).

I finally got it buttoned up this afternoon and went for a drive down Mckean, though some twisties, and was grinning the entire way. Not only is the sideshift more positive but each gear selected easily, without grinding, and reverse was smooth as butter. Up and down the gearbox was a dream. No more 4th/5th gear whine either!

Dr. Evil is the man. He certainly knows what he is doing and he can produce a great shifting transmission.

Now for more driving.gif

Yep.
The reason I've been watching this thread is that Herr Doktor rebuilt my gearstack about a year ago and it was like a transformation. I could DRIVE the car. No more wincing crunches through the cogs. No more stares when I have to (OMG) put it in reverse. Yep. all a fading memory now. Turned my go cart into a real shifter cart.

IGNORANT QUESTION 101:

looking at the ratios of the stock gearing, theRE are basically (2) OVERDRIVE GEARS, both 4th and 5th are over 1:1... no??? i've never seen a flow chart type drawing but the 4th gear couldn't be straight thru 1:1 design like your typical 4 or 5 sp. o.d. did porsche design it so the gear ratios/set ups could be so "versital"?

Mike, there is no "straight thru" on the transaxle. The input shaft goes over the top of the axle and into the gearbox portion. There are 5 sets of gears to drive the pinion shaft. No matter which gear you are in, the power is always transmitted thru a gear set. After spending a whole day watching the doctor, I know that much. It seems to be a very versatile design.

that makes sense. so are all 901 tail and side shift trans equipt with the same gear sets?

i ask because i have a spare tail shifter and wonder if i should really should hang onto for future use.

I learned from the Dr. how about 1 hr of hammering out parts from the old tailshift core can result in hundreds of dollars in great parts for a sideshift re-fresh! Special tools are required, but after that it is simple. After grabbing the best stuff out of my old core, I now have a box of loose crappy bits smile.gif
Anyone need some random parts out a tailshifter? beerchug.gif
