Here's my car in its current form (gutted, caged, 5-lug, big-four). It will hit the track for the first time on 1/5...woohoo!

Ginter

They are Empi sprint stars made for bugs. They are a steel rim, 5.5 inches, made in Germany. I have never seen them with this off set, but they fit the 914 perfectly. They came on the car when I bought it. The local P-guy Mike Galloway couldn’t believe how well they fit. The tires are 185/70-15

You see rusty sets on thesamba.com and evil-bay, but they are mostly 4.5” and a lot of the 5.5” are a different offset. I’ve heard that you can still get the new in Europe, don’t know if that’s true or not. They came chromed or painted, these are painted. The center caps are hard to find, but the guy who makes the aluminum fuch’s cap also makes these. They are prone to rust if driven in the crud. I have 6 of the 4.5” rim, again wrong offset. If anyone wants to know the off set I will measure them, just email me.

looks OK on the outside but it suffers from some pretty big rust issues(longs).

I believe they are. Yeh, it's lame, but I've never had the wheels off. (the carbs have been stripped down to bitty parts three times, but if'n it don't run right, you don't fiddle with much else.) Oops. I lied. I did the wheel bearings and brakes in the front. Still never looked at the wheels. Lips are rolled front and back. The real reason I've not looked to hard at them is attached. I'm going CW on this car. I've got a set of 14"s and a set of gas burners. I just need to pick which ones...

That's pretty funny actually Kim. I've had my carbs apart many times, paid to have them rebuilt, installed an MSD, and still have yet to remove any of my wheels yet either.

It's just as nice in person! It's easily one of my favorite cars. I've seen it a couple of times now (at brad's place of course) and it is a really sharp one. It's like nearly the ideal -- 3.2 in a very clean car. Oh yeh.. Olav's a nice guy too :-)

OK, I'll tell you, but you can't gimme any shit.

It didn't really need bushing work, but it wouldn't have hurt to have it done. In retrospect although MM did what they said they would and the carbs worked well when returned, I would have been happier if they had re-bushed them. I also had them re-choke them to 32. If the wait for Eurometric hadn't been so stinkin long, I would have sent the carbs to them.

Zois seems to have either had good luck with MM or knows folks who have had good luck with them (on carbs that is). He's mentioned it in other forums. And yeh, the eurometrix wait is pretty long. (I'm thinking that my car has been sitting long enough that I don't really have much room to whine about it... I could have sent them the carbs and they could have done them twice by now)
c) I'm prolly being dumb, but I don't understand what "rechoke to 32" means. If you offered clues, I'd take 'em.

G'day eh! Kim, where do you call home now?

I think I'm the only Porsche owner in the Port (of no) Hope! But I'm a half-hour from Oshawa, Ontario and would you beleive that there is two 914 shops there. My bud Mike Galloway run's Mikes 914 and there is Harmondy Road Porsche. Between the two there must be 100+ scrap 914's and a couple dozen project cars and several nice ones. There is quite a few 914 owners in Ontario.

My car is a '74 1.8 and it is originaly white, a PO had it painted the orange. Great pains were taken not to over-spray the trunks. They painted right around the folded edge of the lids and the jams were painted. A good job, but it was done in the 80's and I will repaint in a couple of years. I would repaint it white, but the wife loves the orange and to tell the truth so do I. The teen is almost totally rust free and was originally from BC.

The last owner bought it in 1986, and put 3000 miles on it, it had 74,000miles when we got it last summer. He was an old customer's uncle and they brought the car to me because they couldn't get it running. It had seized injectors and needed shocks etc. When I told the guy how much it was going to cost, he said it was for sale.
I didn't even think about buying it, the guy asked me to drive it for a week, before he put it up for sale. I told the wife to drive it and 'bam' she wanted it!

I picked it up for $4500 Canadian so, thats what, maybe $2700 US. What a deal!
It's a totally cool machine, we are both hooked on it! Who needs drugs, buy a 914 if you need a rush! We now both want more power, this year it gets a 2L d-jet, but I maybe looking for a six next winter. I was going to restore a set of 4 bolt fuch's, but I will run the empi's for one more year, while I think about a six.

This is my 74/ 6 2.4 w/Zenith carbs. Very well done conversion, paint was very poor. At the present time it is in the body shop completely stripped and ready for paint.

Marc: I now live in San Jose, as of '96. It's a pretty car friendly environment, outside of the rain that is currently pummeling us. Your initial driving experience mirrors mine. My first was a '73 2.0, and I was definitely had from "hello"!

Craig: Zeniths -- have you had to fiddle much with them to keep them in tune? Your "herd" looks really good though. Sounds like you have room to breed them....:-)

The Zeniths have not required any tinkering, I beleive the PO did enough of that and knew what he was doing to get them pretty well sorted out. I have added new plug wires,Magnecor,MSD box and coil,K&N watersheild filters.

Boxstr, That is a fine looking yellow 914. (love the garage floor too). My 914 is in need of a repaint and as yellow is not the original colour I was contemplating changing it to Rav. green or Tangerine. Now after this fresh inspiration I think I will keep it yellow.

Brad,

The tires size is 205/55/16 the diameter of the tires is exactly the same as I had before which was 205/60/15. So the gearing is the same.

Patricia's father, Rich, liked the car and when he got back he told everyone that when I passed anyone I would just gear down and they were history.

He wasn't used to seeing the underside of other cars especially the SUV's.

He's a great guy.

Just making sure Olav. I thought I had told you somewhere along the line that the 205/55/16's where the same rolling diamater as the original 165's that came on the car.

Nope, you never mentioned it to me, I told John at Wheel Enhancement what I had on previously 205/60/15 and said I wanted the same diameter and they said 205/55/16 were the same and they are.

Rich Johnson was the first person who told me about the 205/55 16's having the same rolling diameter back in 92 or so. The 205/55's came on all the Mitsubishi Eclipses..makes for a very inexpensive tires when 100's of K's of cars came with them.

That pic was from a pca meet in SF. At that point, I'd never
been to one, so I thought I'd try it out. (decent folk, btw) We
did a drive up into the hills over to the ocean and hit a parking
lot. We were a billion silver and black cars. The look-at-me car
in the lot was a green 914. (revena (sp?) I think) At that
point, I was thinking that signal orange would have been
an excellent color.

You otta post the pic's of your car. Even if the color is the same,
each has it's own look and we all like to oggle:-)

Ok, here's a picture of my car I bought two summers ago.

Car was just painted this April. The color is Palma Metallic, only used in '75. I wasn't thrilled with the color at first, but it grew on me. When it's sunny out, it really brightens up.

Things I'd like to do this winter would be....back date the exhaust system, clean up the engine compartment and remove the rest of the air injection tubing.

I bought this car from Craig Laughlin in Dec. It's still in Oregon, I can't wait to go get it!
It's been too snowy here to contemplate driving it 2600 miles.

Planning on picking it up at the end of the month and going to LA for a week before the trek east.

Here is my 74, getting fitted for it's fresh 2.7. It looks rough, but it's a solid, rustfree car, no really it is!
It's got 16x6's now with a set of 951 fuchs 8's for the front and 9's for the rear when the flares are installed.
It has 944 turbo front brakes, boxster rears, koni yellows, jet-hot coated headers and a 2.7 with RS pistons,
S cams, ported heads & webers.

It's been a long project and I can't wait to finish!

I'm not sure which direction your going to take to LA, but I would wait until the Dunkel brothers swap meet the first weekend of Feb. I know Craig is going and I'm taking at least 3-4 914 people with me for the event. If you drive through SF be sure to post it here. I'll organize a 914 dinner gathering for your visit. We normally get 20-30 people to show up for dinners and the such.

Since mine is an orignal six, I'm quietly collecting stock parts that I never got with the car. Future resale value of the car you know. Case I (yeah, right) or anyone I ever sell it to wants to go CW.

I searched for over an hour today at HPH for a crossbar and air cleaner. It appears the early 911 air cleaner will work... but I dont know if it is correct or not.

I read that the 911 air cleaner is a little taller and is a little to large for the 914/6 engine bay.

FWIW my engine is a factory -6. Type 901/38 (correct 914/6), engine # 6405632. Therefore I figure the air cleaner rig should fit...

It's not stock -- was built up with 2.2S barrels, pistons and cams. We don't know yet what if anything was done to the crank (CW or not) or heads.

17 mile drive in Monterey. It's where Pebble Beach is located. We had a guy in the group Ken Schipper (sp?) that lives there, so the whole pack of 914's got in as "visitors" and didn't have to pay the toll.

Side note.. It only *looks* like good topless weather. It's overcast as all hell there. I think I was wearing a sweatshirt and had a jacket draped over my legs. The heater didn't even help!

Yes he's correct, they are ATS...they were an offset that allowed me to use 205s under the stock fenders. I even used them for awhile with 9 inch slicks and only had to roll the fender a little bit ...but the clearance between the front strut and the inside of the cantilevered tire was TIGHT.

They have vendors selling 2 and 4 post lifts.
$2100 can get a 2 post and $2500 for a 4 post.

I saw at least 4 vendors at both Indy and Del Mar that had very similar pricing.

Nice...I need to add that to "the list". Not real high up, but "someday".

I realized recently that some jobs on the car are just WAY easier with a lift. Maybe I'm getting old, but laying on the concrete with oil/gas/brake fluid dripping on me has gotten fairly painful and unpleasant.

But what kind of garage (ceiling) height do you need for these puppies? My garage is a built-in deal, 1st floor of a 2 story house, and not terribly tall.

I think the next house needs a fully detached, 4 car setup with its own john, a/c and heat, etc.

Ceiling heights vary, the ones that I was looking at were either 11 or 12 foot. Those were for 2 post, I know there are some that are made for 10' ceilings.

The spare tire saved my life!! I broke my neck, back, nose and jaw! I was bleading internaly and almost didn't make it! My friend (in the passenger seat) didn't brake anything but was cut from his chin to the top of his head and from his shin to above his knee.

Keep the spare!!!!

I trust my 914 as long as it doesn't roll!!

For a spare pick up a space saver spare from the junkyards about $75-100. Also look for a little air compressor that goes with em so you can inflate it if you have a flat. The 916's had this first and it makes for alot more room in the front trunk.
Here is a picture of the tire standing upright, although I still have mine laying down.

Yes they are.

The PO started to do a restoration on the car and had taken the rockers off and a bunch of other stuff as you can see from the pic. It made checking the car out real easy.

It neeeds very little to put it back on the road. Fuel and FI line replacements are planned. Along with a paint job. Don't know if I'm going to keep it white or go back to the original yellow. My son wants it to stay white so it will match his car (70 1.7L). New trunk seals, carpet and some new tires. All I'm waiting for is warm weather to get started.

You know, I dont recall what silver that is. I'm pretty sure its stock 73 silver (the car was originally silver before the flair install aprox 8 years ago or so)

She loves it. Drives the wheels off it. She has put more mileage on the 914 than she has on her 1 year old Tahoe.

She wants me to do a V8 conversion in it for her.. I told her only if I could use the new ZO6 engine from the Vette. She used to drive all of the V8 conversion cars I built in the past.

This was during our drive up the coast on Hwy 1 during the Tour 2000. We were just south of Big Sur with spectacular views of the ocean. It was a great day to be touring and I was having a special time with Meredith. Times like that don't happen often enough.

I've spent a little bit of time on the car this week...the most frustrating was spending an hour to lift the sucker up as high as I could to put on my heavy duty jack-stands to end up having the car too close to the garage door so that it wouldn't shut....

I was half tempted to take my sawzall to the front bumper guards/tips to eliminate the problem..........

But luckly, I calmed down and did the job correctly, LOL

A lot of people ask me about that... But really this picture was taken after the tires were first mounted. There were some chalk marks in between the tread.

Although it would be funny to tell everyone i do ice racing and i run studs on my tires.

Thanks Jeff Now I'm back to reconsidering silver as the color to paint my car. I think I've pretty much decided on Adriatic Blue. It's pretty and you don't see it too often. The big advantage (IMO) is that it's not a metallic so it should be easier to blend repairs after those off-track excursions.

The rims are 15x5.5 Enkies.....(closer to six)
Tire size: 205/60/15's
Offset of the rims is unknown (I'm sure it's stamped or something)....I prefer the offset of these rims over the stock rims due to the increased track and how the wheels really fill up the fender wells. I have no problems on the passanger side, but the drivers side is rubbing
(blistered the paint on my first trip around the block today)...no big deal...the car needs a new paint job one of these days...

I think the problem with the pic from VegasRacer is that he is referring to a URL.
I've tried the URL, and it redirects you to get a password or sumptin'
(it's one of those online alblums that try to get your e-mail addy so they can spam you)
I think the redirect on the URL is the problem for the pic not showing here on the BBS

My car is a 74 with a 2. something 4 cyl.
The suspension is out of an 85 911 Carrera.
I have run with POC and PCA in the past.
I have more fun and am more competitive when
I vintage race with VARA and HSR West.
Right now the motor is being rebuilt.
I kinda stuck it in 2nd gear at Willow Springs
when I was aiming for 4th. OUCH!!!
I've got some pretzeled valves if you've got some beer.

After checking out some of the other fine sleds pictured here
I didn't really think I could make anybody jealous.

My garage right now is packed to the rafters and the snow outside still hasn't gone away enough to allow me to park some of the toys on the street. Korijo: Nope, no stickers planned. In fact none of my cars has stickers on them. However, only one of them is currently running - the daily driven Honda. The RX7 Turbo has some engine problems, the clutch is out of the 944 Turbo and the 914 is a long ways from moving down the road under it's own power. Good to hear you don't like stickers either. I probably wouldn't get any sleep if I found out my donation to your wheelchair was spent on anything other than performance mods.

seriously, those could have been added by the dealer or someone that just wanted to help protect the car from the errant shopping cart or door ding from the bozo next to you in the parking lot.

I know that this is not a 914, but I have a few reasons to post it on this list.

1. Brad helped me on this car way back in 1996, when he had a shop in Arlington, TX (BRM Performance).

2. The car is going to be moving to the Bay Area with me on June 2nd, and I hope to soon get a 914 to put on the track.

3. It will be getting an engine transplant to a 2.3L 914 motor...must have more power.

Some of the side strips were dealer installed, ask me how I know. The dealer I worked at installed the aluminium metal strips first, drilled holes and either screwed or pop rivet on and then inserted the rubber center and then the end caps.
It was all a sales dept. profit deal, along with the other add-ons. I saw alot of that when I was at a Datsun dealership.

Thanks Chris. I will never forget the one time when one of the PDI guys was drilling into the door and his drill bit broke and gouged out the paint about 12 inches. Car was being delivered that day. Owner backed out of the deal when he saw the damage.
The stick on ones have probably all put fallen of of most of the 914s and yes some 911s.

Thanks for the props on the 912...it is actually a '69.

As I understand, the side trim peices were part of the option list from the factory, but they could have been dealer installed also. They actually came in a narrow width and a thicker width and matched the front and rear trim on the bumpers. When I did the restoration of this car, I decided not to put the peices back on and I have the holes filled.

As for the stereo, I designed and built it with the intention that it could be taken out also (for weight savings). It packs one hell of a bump for a single 8" sub. Surprisingly, I was able to eliminate every single rattle from the car so the it doesn't sound horrible from the outside.

Here is the pic that Brad was referrring too...my Mom had the great idea of pushing the car up the drive way with an Explorer. Needless to say, things didn't end up like they should have and then they call me to tell me the bad news. lol!!

the flares FG were pop rivited in place we used Volkswagen Bug fender welting.

I first thought to bond them would be the way to go but now I really like the look.

My 914 is a (5) year restoration project finished in 1998. I was selected to sit next to an original 904 Porsche at the 99 Meadowbrook Concourse Meet because we are both mid engine. A high honor & accepted by all in the know. (Hope the pic comes through).

Sorry Guys, I just had to show another picture of the 904 next to my 914. The 904 owner has owned this car for over (25) yrs. (plus) & only comes out rarely. It was the 6 cyl. not the 4-cam engine. Notice the height next to the 914. Makes you want to wet your pants.

Most of the time..I use a photo editing tool and build one picture with several in it... or I post the IMG tag to a site where I host the pics..

I think 245's on 16" or 17" rims would fit. Brad probably has a better knowledge of the different sizes that would fit under there. I'm running 15x7" rims right now due to class restrictions. I can run racing slicks on the 15x7's, or any size tire/rim combo if it's a DOT-R. I'll probably get a set of 17" rims with DOT-R's to try out from a friend, but I really like the slicks. They feel great on the track.

Bontemp owns the molds to the panels. He has someone mfg them for him. He's got lightweight racing thickness and street thickness. I went street thickness for durability. The fenders are amazingly light but are really strong....I like 'em!

This is really a cool ad.
I copied it from this post then tried out a new program I just got from Ebay. If you don't have the ability to print big poster size pics this program sections the photo into quadrants and sends them to your printer to be printed on 81/2 x 11 paper. You can make the picture as big as you want.... like wall murals. you just trim the borders and put it together like a puzzle. I did this one in a 4 quad print that gave me a 22 x 17 poster. Plus it has the ability within the program to inhance the picture so you aren't getting a blurry mess.

thesey914: originally it was alaskan blue metallic now its a bit darker it is still metallic but it doesnt look like it in the pictures

I need to figure something for the jack hole covers but I only have one jack spur, the other one was really corroded and I cut it off.
This car suffers from long rust so it is my sunny daily driver till I can find a suitable chassis to build a screamer.

Mark Henry. I LOVE the look of the Sprint Stars on your 914.

I seem to remember a post where you mentioned that they had a different offset than standard EMPI-GTV Sprint Stars. Do you remember what the offset is for your particular set of wheels? I need a pair of non-negetive offset wheels for the back of my Beetle project.

I've got 3 sets in my collection. Unfortunately, not all of mine are worth using, and I don't think I have any (other than 4.5") that will fit a 914.

Thanks for posting them. Hope you don't mind if I add your pics to my 914 pic collection.

Yeh, Brad liked them as well.

I like the looks of them as well, but they are a steel wheel and a bit heavy. Also they have the factory original paint and I can see a couple of pin points of rust peaking through, so if I'm going to keep them I should refinish them soon.

This set was on the 914 when I bought it, I also have a couple of other (4 1/2" and 5 1/2") sets. If I ever get back to it I have almost all of the stuff needed to make myself a full-blown Empi GTV bug.

These rims stick out further than my other sets, I doubt if they would even fit under a stock bug fender. Right now I have 185/70-15 tires (PO) on it and they fit perfect, good clearance, 195's will also fit and 205's would be close but they might fit. My fenders have never been pulled or rolled. I have 2 sets of 2.0 Fuch's but I still haven't changed them. I may leave the stars on unless I go to the 5 bolt Fuch's.

I can get you the offset if you like. I'm in for the night and the first show of the year is tomorrow, so I try to do it Sunday night. I'm real busy and I tend to forget shit, so if you don't hear from me shoot me an email and remind me to measure the rims.

Jim, Mike Mueller ran them on his other car too and got them to fit. The offset should be 4 7/8" but what year that is, I lost that chart.

Here’s mine. This is a great board for the 914. I personally re-built the car between 1981 and 1988 and have owned it for 25 years. Painted Porsche Chiffon white. It was a bare shell project and I had the luxury of using mostly all NOS parts. It's a '72 with a dual carb 2.0 euro P/C's spec motor, late side shift trans, six suspension and 4 wheel vented brakes. 6X16’s NOS brown interior, rubber etc. and every nut bolt and hardware bead blasted and re plated. NOS Italian wiring harness, French taillights- a lot of mixed Porsche parts on the car. I molded the front aftermarket valance, a six pan in the rear and punched some louvers in the rockers and angled them out slightly- I used 944 rear hatch shocks for the rear trunk so I could remove the trunk springs to clear my carb linkage. I’m not ashamed to have the VW - Porsche emblem on the rear. Sorry to say, it’s a bit of a garage queen with 4,000 miles. Dave Hhttp://community.webshots.com/album/29151579sPbaMhrqvk

Thanks for the comment. I bought the car in '78 off a used car lot with a cheezy bronze color repaint with 90,000 miles. Made payments on it for 3 years and ran it into the ground. I tore it apart in '81 to build an engine and one thing led to another. These cars are finally getting the respect they deserve. If only I had a dollar for every time someone asked me if it was a six- or, telling me it's not a real Porsche, I'd be a wealthy man.

Or, if your a PCA member, (or not) come out June 1st to the Huntington Beach Concours which this year will include PCA OC region's white glove concours show. You don't have to be a Q-tip wennie, you can come as you are and just do a non judged park it and shoot the bull. To register, forms are available on the Zone 8 website www.pca.org/zone8 or http://vista.pca.org/ocr/. In addition to the Porsches, this year you can drool over all kinds of "other" automotive delights - you have to like them all and it would be good to have the 914's in better attendence. Dave H

Jim copied my carbon fiber dash insert. It is a piece of carbon fiber that I set a template of the 914 insert over and then traced and cut out with a saw and Dremel tool. I would show you mine but I sold that car. The carbon fiber is availble at TAP plastics and runs about $85 .

Exactly what it looks like but you are correct. It is a stiif or hard sheet of the carbon fiber 3'x3'. You may want to call the TAP plastics store nearest you to see if they have it in stock.

JFort, this group is not clairvoyant. Boxter is a friend, neighbor and fellow 914 nut. He knows the gray six very well. Helped me push it into the garage when I brought it home in pieces. JP Stein knows the car as well. The others have only seen pictures. I know you are going to enjoy it. Glad to see you on this forum.

As Boxter said, I did copy his idea and used his left over material. I cut it easily with a pair of scissors. Real easy to work with. The dash on the gray six is 2 pieces, split at the column. Glued to the dash (after removing old vinyl and metal backing) with contact cement.

I just got my first car/first Porsche about two weeks ago.

I love it but I have been doing far more driving than picture taking. I haven't stopped at a really nice location for a photo shoot yet but the other day I came across a 944 so took some pictures of the two cars.

My car is a 1974 1.8L. Original paint was orange.

New addition to the fleet. 74 1.8 with lots of goodies added by the PO. 5 lug conversion,new rotor braided lines, 19 mm master cyl. rebuilt rear calipers,real Fuchs, alloy lug nuts, Pirelli P600 tires,F&R KYB shox, perfect interior, center console,dual OEM outside mirrors,MOMO Apache steering wheel and a big amp Blaupunkt stereo. Nice car may keep this one.

The first car I ever bought (Me in 1978). I only spent 6 months 914-less after selling this one ('75 1.8...hated getting it smogged & would've had to put THERMAL REACTORS and CIS on the 2.7 to comply with Oregon DEQ....don't gotta do that with the '74! WHEEEEEE!)

Hi guys,

I've always driven on the left!! except for one interesting excursion onto the LA freeway one Sunday morning after a 13 hour flight. Was probably the best time to try it. The event I was competing in had the roads closed so it didn't matter which side you were on, although quite a few people speared off into the scenery.

Nothing formal re BBS. A bloke in Melbourne runs the 914 Register in Oz and knows where most of the cars are. I know of a dozen or so, but not many other sixes.

Just thought I'd ad my car on to the list of many. Not the greatest, but not the worst either...but I'm happy with it.

1972, Willow Green, 2.0L (not original engine), dual carbs, descent cam, oversized valves. Engine, Tranny (tailshifter), entire suspension, brakes, carpet, and tires are all less than 2000 miles.

Brown interior, Center console, no rust....ever. (the best part)

It's a daily driver with a Euro 3.2 and stock DME Injection.
It started life as a 2 liter in 86.
Later in 86 I installed a 2.7 with Webers.
Two years ago the 2.7 started pulling head studs so I replaced it with the 3.2.
I tried multiple combinations and ended up with:
Front
21 mm front torsion bars.
22 mm weltmeister adjustable sway bar.
205-50-16 tires.
Rear
140lb springs
Stock rear sway bar
245-45-16 tires.
This combination got rid of the throttle induced oversteer and its not to stiff for the street.
Some day I will get the money to install steel GT flairs and paint it.

It's so much more funner to drive than the carbureted 2.7.
Wiring up the DME was a total joke and a lot less hassle than carbs.

Allow me to show off my '74. I can take no credit for its appearance. The PO bought it new and only put 30,200 total miles on it. Even with such little use, he took great care of the car. What I find most unusual is the modifications on such a low-mile car (he entered local PCA autocross and concours in the southeast, car is from Tennessee). Has externally adjustable Konis with movable spring perchs, hard bushings, 911 front brakes, Weltmeister truss bar, factory sway bars (car was originally a 1.8) and custom 5 gauge console. The paint is entirely original except the obvious rocker panels and 916 type glass bumpers. The bumpers were added in 1992 when the car had 25K miles. Unfortunately he did not keep the originals. I bet they were nice. I got it with a blown 1.7 race engine in a crate. My only contribution has been to install a carbed 2.0. When I get the carbs right it will run as good as it looks (that's why the engine lid is not on yet).

Not sure why interior pictures are so poor (maybe it's the photographer). I added the mats to protect the carpet. PO drove it with bare floors and only put the floor carpet down for shows. I'm not that fussy.

Thanks for the "supportive" comments. The paint looks better in those pics than it does in real life. The PO painted it on a really humid day...its got some runs in the clear coat. As my friend says, "...it looks good from far, but it's far from good." I absolutely love the car. I cannot take any credit for the build of the car (except the Fuchs and brand new Kumho V700's). The PO basically built it from a bare tub. The minimal rust that it had was repaired and it was built for the track. Mild 2.0 w/ dual Webers, 911 struts, 911 calipers and vented rotors all around, Weltmeister swaybar, Konig sport seat, 5-point harnesses, and a Fuel Safe fuel cell. Let me know if anyone is interested in seeing some other pics.

Very Nice, Mountain and Bravo! I like the rear flair and rocker treatment on the Mountain car. Bravo's silver with the polished rim 16's is striking. What size tires are on the silver car? Also, how much fender rolling and massaging was done to fit the 7" wide rims? I am running 205/55 series with my 6X16's and I have always thought that maybe a 50 series tire would be better proportioned to the car. Dave

Thanks for the kind words. I am running 205/45-16's...I also have another set of wheels that have 205/50-15's. I really like the proportions on both sets, but the 16's look the best. The only thing that was done to the fender wells was to pinch the inside lip...no "pulling" was required.

Brian, Do you have any pixs of the interior?? I do like your custom rims and tires. I stayed with the stock Mahle wheels. My sons helped me clean and paint the rims and the car two months ago and they still look clean. The rear wing came off of an Accura, but we had to modify it to make it look right.
The red paint makes the car go faster then yellow, just ask the police!!!(HA)

Yes we painted the rubber bumper tops. I used flexable primer and flexable bondo(very thin) I found both of these products at my local paint supplier. It worked good but if I were to do it again I would buy fiber glass bumpers instead. If you want to know more details just send me a PM.

The Daytona weather SUCKED. It was 95 degrees and 85% humidity during our race at 11PM Thursday night. It was brutal to say the least. I grew up around heat (Texas) but trying to work/function at 1am with a car on the track wasnt fun. It drained the life out of all of us.

BrovoHotel.......Thanks for posting interior pixs! I like your simpson seat belts. I am going to check out the simpson web site and see if they offer them in red. I have the stock belts and they don't retrack worth beans. I just recovered my koenig seats in cloth to match the car. Here is a Pix.

Simpson sells red belts. They also make Cam lock belts which if you are going to spend the money on new belts, is the way to go.. No latches to mess around with, ext. Also if your budget is tight, Check out Racers Whole Sale's catologe, New Camlock belts (the brand is G-force, My dad uses them in his track car, nice belts for the money) fetch 120 each, instead of 200+ each. I bought some simpsons for my street car. and I cant wait, just have to find some cheap racing seats (anyone want to donate some used one's? hehehe), or custom fiberglass mine...

Andyrew... thanks for the help on seat belts. I checked RACER WHOLESALE and if anyone is interested they are having a sale on the 5 point camlock belts for $109.99. I think that is a good price for what you get! All I have to do now is convince the boss(wife).

Well here is where I started out.

My car has been changed a ton, and it is undergoing alot. I have since the pictures done a whole heck of a lot. Let me name a few. Starting with the inside,
I put in a perfect dash,
I have a like new Momo steering wheel (80 bucks at a swapmeet with hub)

I am making fiberglass enclosures for my speakers and sub for my sound system, all totally stealth.
I am keeping the factory A/C but modifying it to be stealthy and for my knees (dont like the bulky under look)
I have 5 point black Camlock simpson harnesses. Thus I will be using carpet instead of a backpad.
I will be fiberglassing my seat so that it is more of a race seat and so I can use the harnesses.
I scraped off all the tar on the floorpans and Por 15'd the beautiful floorpans

The Handling and braking.
I have 5 lug currently installed with polished 16x7 Fuchs(300),
With a complete 5 lug suspension I bought at a swapmeet, I got front 911 M aluminum calipers with a 3.5 in bolt spacing, new pads, new vented rotors, Koni's, the hubs, strut housing, A complete front kit. I also got rear trailing arms and rear vented stock 914 calipers with a spacer, utilizing the stock E brake. All for uhh bout 400 bucks.

I also have turbo tie rods installed, a 19mm M/C, a braking 'T' proportioning valve, the works.

The engine is a stock 2.0, I am currently going to do a simple rebuild, and I have all the FI to convert it back to stock FI. I am cleaning it right now and painting everything to be painted.
The body needs a complete repaint, and some minor repairs. I will be using 225's or larger in the rear for flares, So I am going to custom flare my rear fenders, and roll the fronts. I am going to cut a line across the top of the rear fenders, pull the fenders out, and weld in the gap with some sheet metal. The finished product should look like

As far as I have been able to determine, the color
is metallic viper green. The paint code on the badge
is L 98 B, which I think I finally tracked down on a list
of VW paint codes. I don't see any evidence of this car
having been repainted. Even if it has, I believe this is a
stock color as I've seen two others just like it.

The VIN is 4762903546.

I've been driving this Renegade v8 conversion for about a year now. It was a pleasure to put together and is a real thrill to drive.

Many of you have helped during by build process and I've lost touch for the past 8 months or so. The car has gone from 4 lug to 5 now with a new set of rubber and a brake upgrade.

The drivetrain has proven to be reliable with about 5000 miles logged to date, and it's about time to install a modern a/c-heater (my next project).

Yeah, top of the line radar detector recommend for running on streets..........hard to keep it under 80 mph. It "was" a 2.0L '73 with dual Dellortos when I started and was a blast to drive until it started knocking (bad). This is just something I alway wanted to do. I'm really surprised at how well the transaxle has held up........a real concern I had when entering this project.

My objective was to have a little more power, modern heat and air and no oil leaks. Not my first Porsche but some of the improvements I wanted to make this time around.

I quit counting at about $20,000 but this is how I got there:

Initial investment- '73 2.0 running and in good condition= $3500

Custom built engine including shipping from west to east coast = $5000

Wheels, tires, suspension, brakes (all provided by Rich Johnson) = $3000

Renegade conversion (rear springs, a/c+heater, wiring harness, exhaust, cooling system, HD clutch, v8 conversion kit, gages. = $5000

The rest was spent on various upgrades/restoration.....door latches, various chrome pieces, rubber, bumper restoration (ouch!), gage replacement, seats, mats, new dash pad. This list could go on forever, but you get the idea.

OK, I'm in on this thread.

This is Ole yeller, my faithful '71 914-6, 3.0L conversion. I'm the second owner and have added 220K to the original 35K mileage.

No point in discussing pure dollar value as I'm sure the amount invested over the past 20+ years is staggering. My return in driving enjoyment and the doors that have opened to new 914 friendship is worth every penny spent.

By year's end I'll have the new Porsche sanctuary finished out appropriately to house Yeller and provide quality space for my reoccuring German therapy sessions.

I'm new to the 914 but my enthusiasm is great. The photo is of my 1975 1.8. It came with some sort of big bore kit in it. I bought it in May of 2003 and don't have any contact info for the previous owner to discuss what the engine size actually is. It does have a pair of Delorto 45mm's that are seem too large, I think a pair of 38’s or 40’s would have been a better sizing. I will be swapping the venturis out soon and rejetting as it runs considerably too rich as it is. I paid $2900 for it. I've mostly been repairing little things and cleaning it up (new 914-6 clutch, new throttle cable, turn signal and tail light lenses, fixing small electrical problems, window cranks, etc.). The Riviera wheels have also been replaced with a set of Mahles and 195/60 tires since the photo was taken.

I recently (three weeks ago) acquired a white 1976 2.0 complete car with a 72 1.7 engine in it (the 72 1.7 engine has 61,000 miles on the original completely stock engine and is rather anemic compared to the engine that’s in the 75). The 76 seemed like a pretty good deal at $2100. It appears to be a nearly rust free California car, which included the car with the 72 1.7 engine in it (runs very well), the original 2.0 engine complete as an engine to be rebuilt, a set of five Mahle 5.5x15 wheels, a spare set of seats, gages, and a whole bunch of other spare parts that came off the 72 914 that the engine came out of, not to mention a gaggle of receipts for things like turbo tie rods, Bilstein front shocks, Koni rears, a new clutch and pressure plate, braided stainless front brake lines, and too many other things to list.

Neither car is anything special compared to some of the exotic 914's I'm seeing on this web site but they're mine and should provide a boat load of fun as I get into them. They sure are fun to drive! Oh, and I’ve bought every book on the 914 that I could find so far. Please bear with me if I ask a lot of questions in the future.

Thanks! Thats a SuperTrapp hooked up to headers. I find that the traps are a touch on the loud side, but then again so is the color so i guess it goes together just fine!

A friend here in Boise (works for Hewlett Packard) has a pair of 914's and I've met one other gent while waiting for the wife outside of a store sitting in my 75 914 (his is the green 914 in my avatar). Yesterday on the way to work I found myself following a very nice looking brown 914 and have seen a couple others around town whizzing by, but that's about it. So I know there are several around here but just haven't been able to hook up with them. I was hoping some of them might be on 914 Club dot com but haven't seen any yet.

To be honest with you, I'm not sure what options were available. The guy that sold it to me told me that he had basically put a new (used) interior in it. It's got striped seat pads, and he was sure to point out to me that I had "real" gauges in the center console (ie, they have actual numbers on them and are not just idiot gauges).

The carpet isn't great, and the dash is cracked so I keep it covered. It had the original steering wheel on it, and that was falling apart but there was a fully functional if slightly beat up older Momo wheel in the boot, so I put that on instead. I didn't like the original wheel anyhow - too big. The plastic shift knob was broken and kept coming off in my hand when I went for second gear, so I put a nice leather Momo shift knob on (installed it myself! ).

It's not quite a total beater, but it is definitely not a show car.

Now last week I bought a rough 1973 2.0L D-jet (original engine/car was a 1.7L) with an oil leak (PO says it's the oil cooler seals) that was originally a metallic lime-green but currently has a cheap-ass yellow overcoat Rust holes in the body due to the infamous battery location but the interior is sweet. She will be my project car and I'm looking forward to working on her. Luckily, I salvaged almost my entire wrecked 914 before scraping her (please don't razz me, I'm kicking myself in the butt about that daily) so I have some rubber and stuff to put on my "new" 914 (like a rebuilt tranny and shifter & PORSCHE rear reflector). No pictures yet but they'll be coming.

Here's my original pride-n-joy that got me into air-cooled dubs (recognize the nose, Mark?):

A 1972 Squareback (a.k.a. Type III) originally owned by my parents. Hi-perf 2.0L w/5-speed. This engine, were I to swap it with the 914 (a 'cool' swap in the T3 world) would make the 914 an insurance risk

I just joined. I should be getting my 914 in a few days. It is a 1974 that has some issues. Mainly there is alot of surface rust, No holes just surface. I plan on prepping it and hopefully getting it painted before I leave for Boot camp in a year.

Why not just swap the 1.8 for a 2.0 and keep the L-Jet? As long as it's only an interim solution anyway. Leaves more $$ for

I'm running a 2.0 with the 1.8 FI, only changes involved the intake runners and injectors. I had to cut and re-weld the runners to match-up to the plenum, and simply swapped in injectors from a 2.0 bus. It runs a bit rich, especially on overrun (nice popping from the Bursch!) but it gets great milage due to the increased torque according to Rich @ HPH

My second 914.
First was a good old green 76 2.0L that was perhaps the most reliable car I've ever owned. It worked, it was way fun, and even as a regular little 914 2.0L I could make horrid street driving kids feel bad in their souped up Eastern imports - sometimes its just the driver.
Sadly, the 2.0L was killed by a Ford Escort on New Years Eve day while going to watch my wife in her big screen debut (featured extra -and she kept her clothes ON!!!).
I came running to this board and with the 'groups' help I found a NEW child.

The second 914. Its a 73 1.7L, I have no real knowledge of the car. Right now I'm putting in another 1.7L engine, the first 1.7 has a bent/broken intake valve problem -AKA a rebuild problem. So far, I'm happy with the new 'look' the first car needed a TON of paint related work, rust, some minor dings etc.

I want to remove the back 'mullet' spoiler, but am waiting until I can have the entire car painted. I have a few little under-carriage related rust issues to deal with over the next year -and naturally, I still have to see how the new engine runs.

Till I can find a 6 cyl I like (and can purchase) this is the car, not very 'beefy' but still, its a dying breed and I'm happy to have one that still breaths!!!

Very nice ride, glad to see someone else from the SLC area on this board, echocanyon was in this area never did get a chance to met him and now he's in texas. There are a lot of teeners in this area, I've seen a bunch of them at Ed Andrews shop, maybe sometime we can get a group together and cruise up to Park City or just a cruise. Welcome to the board, a lot of knowledge in here.

the car was yellow originally, but was repainted to brown/gold metalic
the front and rear fenders are in primer (those are new)
the doors came from a orange car (repainted to red) and will be junked

I'll try to post some pics of the rust repairs later on
They're not the purdiest repairs, but they will do their job (for this car, I don't care about pretty)

Yes, I remember the Orange /6 quite well. WOW how that thing sounded! How many 914s do you have now? I believe you sold the /6.

As for my 914. My car has been sitting while I collect parts. I've had a '69 Beetle apart for a few years and I don't want more than one project apart at a time. In the mean time, the longitudinal rust on the 914 has got to the point where It will be more costly to fix my current car than to buy another....which is what I did. Just as soon as I get the checks mailed out (which will happen this Friday), I'll be getting a blue '75 that was on the classifieds here a week or two back. The only major thing this one needs is fenders, paint, and assembly (and a battery tray). All of which, I already have. It will cut my completion time and costs drastically.

Geoff, I had a perfect rear chrome bumper and decided to use it. I don't mind the looks of the front rubber bumper and decided to leave it alone for now. It's very rare to find someone in this part of the country that would even notice the difference. Some old man was asking about my car when I stopped at a country store for gas the other day. He knew it was a Porsche and that it had a 4 cylinder engine. He complimented me on the condition and then guessed it was worth about $30,000.00! I laughed and told him not quite. After I left I realized I should have said yes, but I was in a financial bind and would take $20,000.00.

Here's mine and the flares I labored to put on! That was a bunch of work!

The car has a 302 Chevy V8 putting out about 385 HP with 335 ftlbs of torque. Koni and Weltmeister suspension, Sway-a-Way torsion bars, w/no sway in the rear.

Needless to say, it's spanked many cars on the street and the track! Love to spank Detroit iron! (or 930's)

I wish I had a picture of all their faces as I blew by!

Hi Gang,
My car is a real factory six cylinder serial numbered car with a 1986 3.2 engine and transmission. It has headers into a 911 sport exhaust. The lower rear valance is vented for improved engine cooling. The car is lowered 1 3/4 inch using slalom springs front and rear. It has boxed rear trailing arms, Koni shocks on the front and Bilsteins on the rear.
The brakes are 911S front calipers. The engine is estimated at over 220 hp. I am running 16 in Fuchs with 205 Yokohama R compound tires.
It has extreme acceleration and great handling. I run the car through driver ed events at Watkins Glen, Mid Ohio and the new Beaver Run. I also have done a few auto cross events. I also have a 1982 911SC Euro, but find the 914 out performs the 911 on the track.

you should have seen the time I unstrapped my car from the trailer had the ramps down and decided to leave it on the trailer and go back to the hotel. Raised the front of the trailer off the hitch annnddd.......Roebling road really didnt need that fence anyway..

This is my 1975 1.8 my wife said to throw it away, I thought if I cleaned it up she might even ride in it. All the chrome is powder coated and I built a custom interior. if any one is interested in more pics I will gladly email them. I am new to this forum and I am impressed. You can drive during the day, and use your hand as turn signals!! Just put a plate on from the front of your daily! , Although It might be a stiff ride.. Its sometimes bone jarring for me driving down the street, I pay attention to the small potholes, and completely avoid the larger ones..

The easy part is the turn signals. See in Florida you're not suppose to use them, its the law. They are only to be used for driving down the road and not turning.

People retire to Florida and forget the rules of the road and complain about how everything was better "up home". BTW, I was born here, like you couldn't tell.

Mine is a 914/6 [/4 conversion] vintage racer, first raced in 1993, always with VARAC in Canada. The quick and dirty: all steel narrow body [as per rules]; 2L six built as an S with some tweeks; built for fun; safety; and reliability. Most of rest of the build sheet is fairly normal stuff - happy to go into any detail if requested. This winter project is a close ratio gearbox to keep it in the happy-times power band.

...sadly, not! We have four or five well-prepared Cooper S' driven by - in at least one case - ex pro drivers, and they FLY. Never use their brakes, and always in a four wheel drift. I'd rather be in front, but watching these cars from behind is great entertainment. I'm about 2 secs slower than the best Minis. BUT I can usually count on more track time, as their engines and especially gearboxs regularly self-destruct. Then we get into the British car jokes!

My new 914-V8. I bought this from a gentleman in San Diego a couple weeks ago. It is a '71 but has a lot of parts from a '75 on it. Resprayed yellow but did a pretty complete job of stripping first. It has a Renegdae modifiied 914 transaxle with 1st gear removed (or locked out) and taller 3rd, 4th and 5th.

It runs pretty well but needs a little tweeking. The cooling system lines are not run very well (one was resting against the header and melted through). Shifting into 2nd (now 1st) has been tough but getting a little easier (it may just need some breaking in). The rear tires rub (225/50-16 on 16x7 Fuchs) so I will be expanding the rear fenders a bit.

Aaron,

Its all store bought carbs/linkage from CB Performance. The throttlw bracket is a custom jobby somebody fabbed up. I use something similar in my carbed cars.

Thanks. There is a ton on nights sleeping on the couch, busted nuckles, and PO horror stories.

The stripe came from AA. I paid only $10 for it. Too bad its peeling off now. It seemed to be made for Porsche. The bag had VW AG on it.

I was at the "Doctors office" today and he said Quote.."All e-bay useres are thieves and I hate them all!" I overheard him yelling at his staff about e-bay and paypal. Just think, he was about to sell me used junk, again.

Figured I oughta get a picture of my projects up here.
Project 1 is the easy project (I hope).
Just needs some minor welding and the carb setup put back on.
Then a new paint job. The PO put one of those 20 ft. paint jobs on it....to cover flaws I'm sure, one of which I just stumbled upon....more on that in another post. I really like that aubergine color....hmmm.



Project 2 is a roller that needs to be torn down completely and rebuilt.
There's a bit more rust on #2.

The car was that color when I bought it and the closest match I found for it is some kind of GM dark grey.

I had a '74 Beetle in the late 80's which my father painted a GM color "dark charcoal" was what the paint shop told me it was called. It looked exactly like your 914. I loved that color.

Washed the car today. The wheels are Racing Dynamics for a 930 turbo. The rears are9.5/17 with a 20.5mm offset with a 255/40/17 tire and I'm using a 1" spacer on these for clearence on the inside. The fronts are 8.5 with a 13.5mm offset and a 235/40/17 tire with no spacer.

I've owned the car since 1984 and have been working on it for the last year. I installed a 350 chevy that I built from a bare block. I built all of my conversion mounts and brackets myself I Did the 5 lug conversion with a front suspension and brakes from a 86 911 on the rear I used vented rotors and the stub axles from the 911. I also used the axles from a 89 all wheel drive 911 and made adapters for the 901 transaxle.

I've been driving the car for a few months now. Was even brave enough to take it on a 1000 mile round trip a few weeks ago.

Rich stone stock (well except for the euro lens's). Just keep up the maintenance and they last 30 yrs!
Its got some rust as usual (you can see I took off the sail vinal to treat the trim spots), but as long as I keep top of it its cool.
Spending all my time trying to bring the the 74 back from the dead.

Just bought it a few weeks ago. Only stalled it once (my fault).

Its my first 914!

74 1.8. FI. Flowed heads. Optical Ign. Old style linkage (I dont remember why the seller said he did this other than (it was easier to work on I think). The seller was a 914 mechanic and this was his last of about a dozen he'd had over the years. Rust on the chassis and past the paint is minimal. It goes much faster than my daily driver saab. Needs weather stripping and new door handles.

Ironically my main car didnt start up yesterday and I had to use my "project" car to get to work. Its got a nice loud exhaust, which everyone loves when in the parking garage =) But after seeing it, everyone calls it the Porsche GOAP =\

I was going to sell it for a little more than I got it, as I became overwhelmed by the vanity repairs and I thought "I can make a few bucks" but I just love seeing it too much in my driveway and love driving it even more. I'm still on the fence though, as I'm pretty damned busy and impatient when it comes to fixin stuffs (but not lazy).

Thanks! I've been lurking on ebay and craigslist for a number of years for a 914. I'm super excited about this one. The only documentation I've got is the pelican parts guides and a haynes manual and a knowledgable friend with a 72 911T.

I had a hell of a time finding the gas tank the first time I was on empty!

Speaking of which, I don't even know what kind of oil and filter I should use! I live near the san francisco area, so no snow but wet. Anyone have any recommendations?

Heres a pic of the engine. The air filter is from home depot (!) I'll probably replace it with a K&N but it works great.

Thanks Jeroen. That picture is my favorite angle of the car in it's present condition as it shows off the solid long and jack point in the original color. It is indeed a nice tub.

I've alredy purchased a nice front right and left rear quarters. Before I even unloaded the car from the trailer, I pulled back the wiring in the engine compartment and sand blasted the important parts so I could size up the work. The *original* battery try is still in the car. It's badly pitted with rust and has one quarter size hole in it but It's solid enough for me to stand on it and I'm not a small guy at 190lb.

There is one pin-hole in the passenger side long. The firewall on both sides need small patches just above the long. The left side engine shelf needs a small ammount of work to fill pin-holes. The passenger side engine shelf may get replaced. It needs the forward most 8 inches or so. I've already got an engine shelf so I may just replace the whole thing.

Why, yes it is the Orland Park 914 from Rizza Porsche plus $1000 of body work to repair all the dents and dings and some new Toyo Proxies TS-1s.

Engine is coming out in roughly 2 weeks to receive a top end rebuild with 96mm Nickies, Keith Black pistons, Rebuilt 2L 914 heads with 42 x 38 valves, dual springs, mild port and polish. Also will be receiving a set of ceramic drop-in replacement lifters and ARP Thru-bolts to top off the rebuild. Has a webcam 86 grind in the bottom end which is really tight as is, so I don't want to bother with it. Will also receive a set of Weber 44 IDFs, mallory unilite, hyfire VI, and a new bananna stock muffler. While i'm at it, i'm having the little bit of rust repaired and replacing all the cables, mounts, etc.

The car will be driven to CA for the Dunkel's show in Feb, so all the updates will be done by then. The previous owner had already done some mods like koni reds in the back, 140 springs, stainless brake lines, etc. All in all, a nicely maintained car and excellent for having been a rust belt car!

Thanks Andy. It doesn't show up well in the pictures but it's painted that turquoise color that was offered on the late 80's Camaro/Firebird. I actually went to the dealer and got the paint code off a car in the showroom. I was about to turn 20 at the time. Salesman thought I was nuts. Oh, and it's an x auto-stick car as well.

I started puting the floor pan bolts back in a few hours ago. The body's been off of the pan since about '98. That pic was taken the day after I set the body back on earlier this month.

I bought the car like that. It was originally my girlfriends dads, and I just purchased it like two weeks ago. He had the car built to his specifications, and he has some money to spend.

I am working on getting pics. My digital camera sucks, so I keep taking them and it keeps coming out either blurry or not a good picture.

car is at the carage and will be back for next racing season.
after that accident i had two days to fix the car for the last race.
and in Grand Finale, two BMW hitted my poor little 914 behind and to side

luckily i made molds of rear fenders last winter and had bought spare right front fender from the other Finnish 914 on the list (kirkkis) so everything else is only work and should be done before easter.
i could not find a picture of trunk lid vent but here you can see the reason for it.

the more I look at 75/76's from the side view the better I'm like'n em. The front bumper makes it look longer and its appearance, to me, is a sleeker design (longer=thinner)
