MarinaCA airport

we are inviting all 914 pilots to come out and AX their car at one of the premiere AX sites in Norcal. You don't need to be a regular AXer. Just come on out and see what your little car can do.

these are Zone 7 AX dates and we are going to be running within the scheduled AXs.

we are planning on sending out invitations to some of the fastest 914s in the western US. Including Tom Provasi, Steve Nieslony and others.

some of the possible things will be, lunch provided both days, T-shirts, hats, etc.
We will have a hotel with rooms available for folks coming in from more distant locals.

this is a chance for all of you to stop talking and start driving your cars...

no more excuses huh.gif

more details to follow as plans come together.

Put these days on your schedule

and yes, you will be able to drive your car at this event no matter what kind of motor it has in it. biggrin.gif

I would suggest everyone that is planning on attending go to the GGR classification site and class their car according to our points system. That way everyone will also have a PAX index number for the weekend. PAX is used to have differently prepared cars compete effectively via a multiplication factor applied to your best time. biggrin.gif
http://comp.pca-ggr.org/rulcomm_cs/web/index.php

By the time we have the Shootout, GGR should also have our new timing system up and running. Similar to what SCCA uses with bar code scanners etc. smilie_pokal.gif

So how far is this from Seattle?

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Feb 11 2008, 01:15 AM

about 900 miles from what I can find on google maps.

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Feb 11 2008, 01:25 AM

this is exactly why we are planning a 2 day event, to make it worthwhile for folks to come from more extreme distances.

On both days you will be getting at least 8 runs plus fun runs and on Sunday there is a very good possibility of getting 12 or more runs.

we are hoping to get at least 20 or more 914s to attend....the more the better.

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Feb 11 2008, 01:53 AM

I am going to look into it. Don't know how likely it will be but I would like to give it a try. I have a baby girl due on July 9th, but maybe my wife will let me take a little break biggrin.gif

Posted by: Twise Feb 11 2008, 03:02 AM

Hmmm - This sounds fun - If you are planning on coming down from WA I will consider it as well. Marina Airport you say? How bout an address for mapquesting???

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Feb 11 2008, 03:05 AM

That would be cool. Then we can see how close are cars are.... in looks.

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Feb 11 2008, 09:37 AM

the cross streets of the area we use is at Reservation Rd and Imijin Rd. Marina California

If you go to google earth and put in Marina CA you can find it.

It's been a while since I did an Auto-X, and never before in a 914. What are Zone 7 rules? What type helmut? How much? Do I need to join, or just pay for the day?

Posted by: Borderline Feb 11 2008, 10:29 AM

Dan: Isn't everyone participating supposed to be a PCA member?? Can we get around this for the weekend.

There will be a number of loaner helmets available.

To enter an AX it is usually around $30 - $35.

any SA or M helmet with a Snell rating of 1995 (2000 recommended)or newer. We have some loaner helmets if you arrive early...prices for the AX will be $30 on Saturday and $35 on Sunday....since these are hosted by two different regions....GGR on Saturday and LPR on Sunday.
As long as you are driving a Porsche you will not need to be a PCA member.
The rules are pretty simple....your car needs to have properly operating brakes, tight front wheel bearings, battery properly held in place, all extra stuff removed from trunks and interior. Good throttle return spring and seat belts in good condition.
Come on out and give it a whirl. One day or both, it doesn't matter.
You are absolutely going to have a good time.
this whole event is about getting as many 914s together in one place as possible and then getting to drive them as fast as possible while having fun and not getting into trouble with the law....smile.gif

Posted by: Demick Feb 11 2008, 10:37 AM

About a 50/50 chance I'll be in Hawaii at that time - but if not, I'm in for both days!

Posted by: BMXerror Feb 11 2008, 12:22 PM

I'll try my ass off to be there. I need to go through the motor this year (as soon as I have the money) and install swaybars before my next AX. Is this a concrete thing right now, or is it still in the planning stages? Keep us posted, because I'm totally interested. Us So Cal guys need to go up there and represent! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Twise Feb 11 2008, 12:49 PM

Never AX'd before - Ran GSXR750 at willow for 5 years - This sounds inviting I am as of right now planning on attending, both days. Maybe I will try to get in an AX with Sean down here first. Got to get my car done...

Posted by: Rusty Feb 11 2008, 01:14 PM

Hey Dan... do you need a sponsor? Someone to cover coffee and donuts for the 914 group?

PM me.

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Feb 11 2008, 04:53 PM

this is really going to happen. we are just finishing up with some lose ends and such.

I think we have sponsorship handled at this point. But I do greatly appreciate your offer smilie_pokal.gif , and may still contact you at a latter date if things change..

If we can get the Socal group, the Norcal group and maybe a few from outer regions to participate, this could be a great competitive event for 914s.
I have had a couple of folks from WA and OR already state their interest as well. biggrin.gif

Posted by: BMXerror Feb 11 2008, 07:49 PM

Are you going to set up your own course, or use the existing one that's marked out? (I found it on Google earth)
Mark D.

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Feb 11 2008, 07:54 PM

we will be setting up our on course....on Saturday it will be run in one direction and then on Sunday we will run it in reverse with only minor changes for flow or safety.

that area is used extensively for AX....every Sat and Sunday there is a different group running an AX...
Shelby club, SCCA subclubs, PCA, Corvette club and others.

Cool to see all 914 sites supporting this event. Should be some great fun and excellent 914 AX competition. This one is on my calendar.

Posted by: ChrisNPDrider Feb 11 2008, 08:18 PM

FYI - Zone 7 PCA is a pretty easy group to race AX with. They almost always have loaner helmets, never ask for any kind of PCA membership or racin liscence, and I've seen all types of 914s race. In fact, the TTOD winner for almost every event is a crusty blue 914 chopped up, TIV, pulled by a crustier Ranchero! Lots of cool folks racing for fun and enjoying their cars, whether it is a SCCA national 996 GT2 or my 1.7 rust bucket. This year in Zone 7 GGR there could be as many as 10 very fast 914s showing up to every event! Dan and BillD are both running the events this year so the Shoot Out should one of the best 914 west coast events this year, hopefully all old friends will be reunited and JP Stein brings his car.... from Oregon beerchug.gif

Posted by: geniusanthony Feb 11 2008, 08:52 PM

Count me in, I just gotta get home and finish some details. 900 miles, sounds like a solid 12 hours at 60...I say the NW crowd convoys... Eh fellas?

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Feb 11 2008, 09:13 PM

glad to hear that some folks from the north are considering coming down to our little get together.....should be lots of fun...

Posted by: hydroliftin Feb 11 2008, 09:23 PM

Well I have a DOT 95 helmut, and should have a new engine by then Sounds like a plan to me.

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Feb 11 2008, 09:32 PM

hopefully that is a Snell 95 helmet confused24.gif ....I don't know any organization that uses DOT helmet ratings.

and the more the merrier. biggrin.gif

Good idea. Besides, it would be good to travel in a group.

Posted by: geniusanthony Feb 11 2008, 09:49 PM

Would this be one of those "race" on Sunday, drive home tired as heck Monday occasions.

Re: traveling in a group- between the lot of us we could store a rollaway and spare car in the trunks, for er um , maintenance.

Posted by: Phoenix 914-6GT Feb 11 2008, 09:54 PM

I would be making it a family trip. So my wife would be following me in our 5-series. She would have our two kids in the back so I would need to plan stops every three hours or so. When we go up to Whistler we make one stop. I am sure we could plan something that would work well and make sure we have tools in such in case your car has a problem biggrin.gif .

No, it's one of those 'race on Saturday AND Sunday, and drag your ass home Sunday night to be at work Monday morning' ..inhale... occasions. At least for me.
How many from So Cal are planning to show? It would be cool to get a convoy of German noise heading up the 5 Fwy.

Posted by: Andyrew Feb 12 2008, 07:12 PM

I'll consider doing this.. Although I will probably be representing 4 rings at the time (Audi a4..), but hey who knows I could be up to dusting off the 914, but I doubt it smile.gif.

OK, this is going to happen.

all things are in order.

I would like to start to get a bit of a head count so I can start to decide on things to be ordered (yes, freebies) for the 914 contingent...
Lunches, shirts, hats or whatever we end up with.

I will edit the first post of this thread with head count....this is not in stone.
Just want to start to get an idea on who would like to be in attendance.

thanks for your interest. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Feb 14 2008, 10:52 PM

OK, sports fans.

Initial registration will be open online at www.motorsportreg.com within the next 2 days. once we are up and running I will edit this post.

Please go to this site, register if you are a new user (it is free)
This registration is to give us some ideas of numbers so we can make appropriate arrangements. If your plan change you can cancel on the same site so we can keep track of everyone.
As the site says, more information will be coming as more arrangements are made and things come together.

We are not collecting money on the registration site. All fees will be collected the day of the events.
If you only drive Saturday or Sunday, you will only pay for that day.

Thanks for your support. biggrin.gif

I think I can answer that for Dan... Yes.

we will try to get everyone classed as close as possible so everyone has an even start.
you don't have to do this, but I think it will be nice for everyone to get an idea of how their car preparation stacks up.
Anyone that signs up for the shoot out should visit the GGR points site and get their car classed.
that way you can have some real bragging rights.

Also, I cracked a trailing arm a week ago and that needs to be fixed. Bummer too. I've been looking forward to this all year.... Guess, I need to find something more local. dry.gif Sorry Dan.

Dan,
Is there some official sign up sheet for this event or do I just show up like I usually do for the GGR events. On the Club site I saw something about preregestering for this event and getting a T-shirt, but I could not find that sign up list either. confused24.gif
See you this Saturday at Bay Meadows! driving.gif

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Jul 15 2008, 10:44 PM

Scott, use this address

http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/dashboard

you have to register with the site, it is free.

if you can't get thru on that one start here at

www.motorsportreg.com

glad you are going to make it Scott.

by the way Scott, this Saturday's AX has been moved to Alameda not Bay Meadows.

I won't be there though sad.gif I had already committed to instruct at Trekkor's AX school being put on thru Track Masters at Sears Point on Saturday...
Have a good day, but be sure to go to Alameda.

A lot of the 914 guys will be at Sears on Saturday so you might be one of only one or two at Alameda.

Posted by: ScooterD Jul 15 2008, 11:17 PM

Dan,
Thanks for the registration info, I did sucessfully register at MotorSportReg.com

Also thanks for pointing me in the right directoin for this Saturday, I am sorry I missed out on the training event ar Sears Point+, I think my head was in the sand for too long a period and I missed out. See you at the shoot out!

just doing a bump is boring ....

tweaking a few folks is more fun....

and the shooting was in reference to the "shoot out" not anyone I was putting a contract on. biggrin.gif

there will be several chopped and gutted 914s in attendance to the shootout...and they are all looking for TTOD on both days...some with 6s and some with type IVs
maybe we can finally put that discussion to rest...........at least for a short while dry.gif

come on down and play with some of the fastest Porsches on the west coast.

Hamilton racing 914-4 with AdrewB
Beast 914-6 semi tubed rocket with BillP
#222 914-4 with RandalB
Pirate Ship with Grantsfo and Dan (almaden Valley)
Shitbox with JP and Britain
914-6 3.2ss with BillD
914-4 Parade winner 2007 with SteveN
Possibly multi parade winner TomP (we are still working on him behind the scenes)
and then we have many well driven and well set up 914-6 and 914-4s coming as well

even if you don't plan on driving (why not?) you should cruise down to Marina on Saturday or Sunday and see probably the biggest collection of 914s AXing for fun, fame and bragging rights.

More good news I mentioned the shootout to the wife. Kids are actually in Utah visiting family until the 5th. So we could make a nice weekend trip down. smile.gif Anyone else bringing their significant others? Not sure the whole autox scene will work for my wife!

JR (Jolly Roger) is all ready and on lashed down to the trailer. Just need to buy the race gas for the weekend now. Looking forward to this event! Dan and I may be outgunned but we may just have a few tricks up our sleeves to help give us a fighting chance against all those crazy fast dedicated AX cars. ..Well not so many tricks, but car is a little better aligned now. Hope that helps us turn better than my last couple outings at Marina this year.

The 914 is at Jerry Woods (see my blog) for at least another two weeks.
I'd love to bring the 911, but its in storage because its such a collectible - the old double edged sword thing i.e. I'd love to drive the CS but more miles = less resale $$. Therefore, now focusing more time on the Teener.

This is shaping up to be the biggest and fastest 914 AX we have seen ever! Two Parade winning cars likely showing up. Multi driver super zoomies. Should be very coOL!

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Jul 31 2008, 12:18 AM

If you live in the greater bay area, you owe it to yourself to get down to Marina, even if it is just to spectate.

2 PCA Parade TTOD winners
many super zoomy chop top 914s with big 4s and 6s, on slicks
cars from Washington, Oregon and Socal.
many narrow bodied hot 4s and 6s on DOT Rs
many stockish 914s.
you will see it all in one spot.

nearly 40 914 cars and drivers....it will be the 914 competitive event of the year, maybe the decade. biggrin.gif

I am jhonny come lately and my 914 does not run but can I bring my 911? would love to come out and run and have fun with the rest.

Posted by: Dan (Almaden Valley) Jul 31 2008, 11:39 PM

yes these are normal GGR, LPR Zone 7 AXs. so any Porsche is good to go.

make sure you come over to the far side of the tarmac. That is where you find all the 914s.

Excellent turnout! I didn't do a headcount, but i'm guessing 25 914s or so ... smilie_pokal.gif

Britain took TTOD driving JPs "Shitbox". There were quite a few 914s in the overall top ten.

I'm still trying to get used to all the gobs of power, but i felt like i was doing pretty well today.
I can't get the car to rotate, too much stickage in the rear, so i'm going to play with the setup a bit for tomorrow.

we shall see ...

Just got home, tired and beaten ... yawn.gif

Today went better, i was able to get the rear end to come around after i made the sway bar change this morning.

My biggest problem now, i can't get the power on the asphalt !!!
I was laying down 30 yards of rubber in a straight line coming out of a sweeper in 3rd(!) gear. huh.gif
Yeah baby, 3rd gear burnouts ... burnout.gif

Amazing how much smoke there is inside those tires just waiting to be let out ... laugh.gif

I got the left rear tire down to the cords all around on the inside and the other three have patches of cord showing as well. Time for a new set ...

Anybody got a Guard LSD they want to sell for the 901? I'm in dire need of one!

Whew what a weekend! Wrenching all day Sat and driving/racin all day Sunday.
BIG THANKS go out to Dan, Brad, Bill C, Mike, JP, Brit, Trek and all the many 914 guys and gals that helped make the Shootout the most fun and exciting AX I have been to yet.
beerchug.gif beerchug.gif beerchug.gif
Personally, I had an OK day getting used to new tires, suspension, and gearing. It was my first race of 2008 and my skillz were dusty. My AX11, sticky DOTR 1.7 managed a 46.1xx by the end of the day, and with a few more tries I could have been in the 45s I think.
Andy and Brad were blowing smoke out the back of the 3.6 like a weekend at the NHRA drags. Yes, Andy and Brad shared driver duties - they are still friends biggrin.gif
Grant and Dan shared the Olympic Blue Pirate ship and got up on 2 wheels several times.
JP and Brit showed us all what years of careful prep and gifted driving can do - woop ass on the entire West Coast. Way to go guys! My hat is off to youz.
Gary kicked ass too - I need a 6.
Andrew B, our local PCA hot shoe, put on the BEST effort I have seen from him Sunday. After almost every run, the notebook came out, tire temps taken, air pressures etc. He was determined to put his blue Smurfy TIV ahead of the yellow Shotbox 6. Brit nipped his time on the LAST run, but skidded in to the cones after the timing clock and was penalized for that. Oh the drama! Brit deservedly took the 914 TTOD for the weekend.
Super fun catching up with all the 914 gang...Bill, Brian, Demick, Tony, Randal, and everyone else who's name I have forgotten. See you next time at the races beerchug.gif

Posted by: grantsfo Aug 4 2008, 12:50 PM

This was a great event. Thanks again to Brad, Larry, JP, Trekkor and others who pulled this one togther. It was a blast. Fun to see so many people having a great time.

Great fun watching Andy burn rubber in 3rd gear. I had front row seat from my worker position as he lit tires up for good 30 yards! Wild stuff.

JP's car was fantastic and was great seeing Andrew pulling off 914 TTOD yesterday. Even more amazing was fact he switched to DOT R hoosiers for the first time and ran radials on a car that has been on bias slicks at every event for past few years.

I like this Photo that Mike Koozman took. Pretty much sums up the weekend for me!

So I took waay too many pictures sunday, ended up with almost a gig.

I'm uploading every last one of them to a friend's server. I separated it into directories based on car number, and have 24 unique 914's! An excellent showing.

http://lolinter.net/fail/8:3:08/

A couple notes:
If I didn't get a picture of your car, I'm sorry, it means you were probably running right before me (I was grabbing the camera in between runs).

I'm a lousy photographer, so I just dumped everything up there (almost 500 pics). To conserve bandwidth I thus listed cars by their # so you don't have to look at all the lousy shots of other people's cars. I'd love it if you linked the good photos of your/others cars to this or other threads.

Along the above lines, linking 'em here is okay, but I'd appreciate if you rehosted them if you're going to post them outside of the 914 forums.
