914World.com _ 914World Garage _ The Official East Coast Cookout 2008 Thread

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Feb 11 2008, 10:27 AM

ECC 2007 was rad. 20 cars (15 914s, 2 912s, 1 944, 1 T4 Beetle, 1 beastly sandrail.) About 60 people over 8 hours.

ECC 2008 could be radder.

It only happens if we make it happen. So lets make it happen.

I would like to propose the weekend of Sept 27-28, 2008.
Events will include a rebuilt tranny raffle via DrEvil, and a New In Box 19mm ATE master cylinder raffle. $20 buy in for each, proceeds going to pay for the party.

This will put us after the All Aircooled Gathering in NJ the prior weekend (Sept 20th.) So all you NE guys can come down and play this year too. Also, this will clear us of two MidA PCA Drivers Ed events happening on Sept 13-14.

I will head the planning effort.

The party will be held at Slackin' at Work's farm:
2344 Old Lynchburg Road
Charlottesville VA 22903

2) Would people be willing to put a little money in the till for the party? Not much - like $5 or $10 to help the planners offset the costs?

Hopefully my car will be able to get to the party this year!

Hey Zach, i'll kick in a few $$ for planning. Good idea on the weekend change. and who's that speed camera tester standing in the front row? av-943.gif

Posted by: atomix8 Feb 11 2008, 12:14 PM

Glad to throw in a few $$$ for a venue, although the only house I can offer has a tiny yard!

Hopefully I can stay for more than 2 hours this year too! Calendar is marked.

First Settler's Region is hosting the Zone 2 PCA Club Race at http://www.virclub.com on August 8-10th. We could have a 914 coral and camp overnight. Just a thought.

Posted by: slackin' at work Feb 11 2008, 12:47 PM

If no one objects to driving to central VA (charlottesville), I will be more than willing
to offer up my place for a venue. I have enough room for say 200-300 914s if we had to.

there are excellent roads around here for a cruise as well.

Ive been thinking about putting a BBQ together, so why not get one "pre-made".
we can also have a bon-fire later in the day.

camping over night is a possibility too. or there are plenty of nice hotels around.

I have yet to meet anyone here.

here is the only picture I could find that shows part of my yard. it's a really nice setting.
we tend to have a few big BBQs a year here... so why not the 914 crowd.

A cruise to http://www.monticello.org/ would nice. Beautiful country.

Zach has seen my place, however I could only park about 8 cars in the driveway, with plenty of street parking. The down side is the back roads suck!

wow! what a setting... i don't think it could get much better than this. i would really hope that this ends up being the location but before you are taken up on your offer, let's hear from the MD and PA folks that this is not too far a drive. i have attended all the east coast cookouts; the first was in richmond at kerry herrs. the second was in kennett square PA at.... kerry herrs. the third was at carolines/babydolls in fairfax station VA and the 4th was at Matts in frederick MD. for me, all those locations are doable in a day trip; 2 hrs to richmond, 2 hrs to kennett square. for Zach and Dr Evil, they go York PA to charlottesville, estimate 4 hours. (2 to DC, 2 more to charlottesville). would they do 4hrs? on the other hand, we might pick up some southern Va, mid-Va, NC and tidewater folks....

i will help anyway i can. i love these gatherings.....

charlottesville va on map - for me from milton de - 4hrs and 40mins each way

I'd be totally happy with c'ville. I go down there enough for games and drive past it plenty to visit the wife's family in Lynchburg area.

Posted by: degreeoff Feb 11 2008, 04:21 PM

Just a thought but what IF we did the shenendoah skyline dr area? You talk about nice roads and I would think a fair drive for all.....say front royal? http://ci.front-royal.va.us/outdoor_activities.asp?M=1&P=7&S=8

Posted by: atomix8 Feb 11 2008, 04:39 PM

Front Royal sounds a little more do-able than C-ville for me. But that's only because my car can't carry enough oil to replenish all it would burn on the drive down there ;-).

Slackin'--Do you track your R32? You might know a friend of mine...

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Feb 11 2008, 04:50 PM

200 miles is nothing - so long as I have someone to follow me with a chase car. Assuming I take my 914, it will likely be the first trip of substance that it makes. 4 hours from my location - no biggie, but I would need to camp. I love that area.

It might proclude Erin and my son from coming though. I don't know how she would feel about camping with a 5 month old, and the drive would be too long to ask her to drive it alone with the kid, chasing me in her Prius. We are going to try camping with infant Theodore, so who knows.

My only other concern is that it would be too far away from the NoVa, Philly, Frederick triangle that seems to be home to a rather large cluster of teeners.

I'd like to hear from you all.
Charlottesville is gorgious, but I want to know if you guys thing it is too far.

Count me in wherever it ends up driving.gif and camping yellowsleep[1].gif might be a possibility depending on the weather patterns at the time..

No prob for me biggrin.gif THat weekend MAY be. There has been a ever growing foreign car show in town around that time and I ditched it last yearfor the ECC, and heard about it ad nauseum from some of our customers, so I had better go this year. Gotta pimp myself right? Besides I plan to have the bike enterd this year rolleyes.gif Oh and I 'd love to see a bigger campout crowd JIM.........

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Feb 11 2008, 06:41 PM

Scotty, find out what weekend the car show is. I planned around the AACG, we can change dates if it conflicts with the one near you. Just let me know ASAP.

Zach

Posted by: scotty b Feb 11 2008, 06:52 PM

Will do. Last year as I said it was the weekend of the ECC and I THINK it was the same the previous year. I had actually thought that IF I could ever get my property cleared we could have a get together here, and bombard the show with busted ass teeners....wait that didn't come out right.......

I really like THIS idea! Missed last year, but will NOT miss this year.

Not all that far away for me, I just hate going through Balt/DC corridor. But, I've learned to live with it & take backroads.

I'm in! Needs $, let us know.

I would drive to Charlottesville, VA.
Perhaps the Baltimore-Frederick-Central PA triangle folks would make a brief scenic drive DOWN the skyline drive on the way TOO C-ville. Camping would be great too.

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 11 2008, 08:51 PM

I have been to the last 3 smile.gif I need to check my school schedule first. It doesnt come out for a few more days at least. I can do VA if I have to, but I LOVED Matt's place last year. I would be camping, or crashing on floor. From me the c'vill area is 5 hours at least. Zach, Noel can drive Erin and your spawn. My car should definitely be done by then....unless something else happens.

Posted by: highclasstrash Feb 11 2008, 08:53 PM

Would love to get in on this. i live in Roanoke VA. and i am having a hard time finding teener people around here. Front Royal would be great for me along with Hoo ville. sky line drive and blue ridge parkway close by. willing to donate to$$

this looks like a good option as well.

I'd love to have every one down to my place, but realize a 4+ hour drive
may be too much for some teeners. Honestly, that was one reason why I
threw my hat into the ring. biggrin.gif

why not?

you'll see in the pic that Zach posted from the last ECC that there is a 944, a dune buggy and a type IV powered 67ish (?) bug in attendance not to mention a V8 powered 914. two 912E's (husband and wife each in their car) showed up later. at the ECC at carolines, degreeoff came on his motorcycle.

:hijack:

He sold it out from under me... I asked him what he needed to have for it and he said he would get back with me. I told him I'd like to buy it. I told him I wasn't trying to weasel him on it but I honestly didn't know the value and, if he would tell me what he had to have I would buy it. He said he'd think about it.

I called him a week later, while I was on vacation in Hatteras and he said he had someone coming up from S.D. to look at it and buy it.

I found one the next day - 30 minutes fresh on Craig's List. My brother went to Hollywood to look at it and bought it for a grand less than I was going to pay that guy, and I got Krauser bags included. All the papers from day one. Completely original. Curry.

:end hijack:

It would be cool to bike out there... or maybe the 911. idea.gif

Posted by: MikeSpraggi Feb 18 2008, 09:16 PM

I missed last year b/c my wife had me run some errands for her, was ready to depart at 5 PM but figured it was too late to make the trek although it was only 40 minutes away. I REALLY want to make this one. Will be glad to kick some $$$ for the event. There is a DE event at N.J. Motorsports Park Sept. 12-14 that I would like to do also .. same as the proposed weekend. I'll have to wait and see how it all plays out, but I would help out $$$ either way. It's sooooo good to be with teener people!

Is N'J Motorsports park the same as the DE At Pocono?

We are early enough in the planning stage that we can change the date. I'd like to impinge as little as we can, and a regional DE weekend might draw a lot of members who would also want to come.

Zach, N.J. Motorsport and Pocono are different venues. I would imagine a few people would want to drive NJMP since this is the fisrt year of racing .... brand new track in southern Jersey. I'm trying to get as much seat time as possible (out of the office that is) so I would really be torn as to doing the DE or the ECC. I want to do both, but can't afford to clone myself yet.

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Feb 19 2008, 08:41 AM

The location for the 2008 ECC has been chosen, and will be at Slack'n At Works farm.

Dillsburg would be a good point for 2009 - especially since it is a hop-skip-and a jump away from where I live. It would also bring the ECC back north of the Mason-Dixon after three years south of it.

By the end of this week i want to have the date finalized.

since thre are two different MidA Drivers Ed meets, and a competing MidA show on Sept 13, I have asked Slack'n if Sept 27th will work. I am waiting to hear back from him now.

I guess I am planning this puppy after all. I need to hide the veggie peeler.

Zach

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Feb 19 2008, 10:24 AM

Okay, we have a confirm that the 27th of Sept (and 28th for campers) works for the host.

This will clear the All Aircooled Gathering on the 20th, The DE at Pocono on the 13th, the DE in Jersey on the 13th and ScottyB's show on the 13th.

We are arranging sponsorship, and so we need this date to be nailed ASAP. If there is something that conflicts the planners need to know about it. On Friday (2/22), unless there is something significant that we have overlooked, the 27th will become the official date.

I would go the multi-woman route out of principal. Move to Utah, its all good. Or parts of Texas (where it appears to be not as all good).

Zach

Utah is a beautiful state, to be sure. Gorgeous desert countryside, good ski areas, dry climate (good for 914's?), but their liquor laws leave much to be desired... last time I checked, homebrewing was still illegal there.

Besides, the idea is to have multiple girlfriends, not multiple wives! happy11.gif

-Mike

Busy as all get out. But Erin is off bed-rest now and seems to be functional again, so I have time to think since she is sharing in the infant duties.

We are a bit ahead of the game on planning (after all, we last year we put the event together in about 3 months). We are working on shirt options.

One thing we need, and have been unable to find, are event sponsors. We would like to keep this event free to all comers, but we need to find a sponsor or two who would want to give a little cash, in return for. . . something. Finding sponsorship is new to me. Name on a t-shirt? Sponsors banner at the event? Most of the places around me, though game for club event sponsorship, feel that my location (PA) and central VA is a bit far. Somma you southern boys out to be able to find us something. :-)

Zach,
I know nothin about sponsors. But will chip in $ as stated earlier in this post come or not. As of now I am coming! Definitely bring a gift for the wife of the host for she knows not what she is in for! Let me know if I can bring anything that will fit in a 914. Have a 2 person tent if anyone needs to borrow, unless i stay for the night, bag too. Is that special thread up? Oh, Dr. E. I just learned about your accident. Will this prevent you from coming? in a 914?

I was talking to the http://www.cdoc.com/ rep at the Porsche Parade about racing seat sizes and he said I could go to the CDOC warehouse near Charlottesville to try some out. So I got to thinking that maybe the ECC gang might want to take a tour of the facility. Before the heavy drinking starts of course. beer3.gif

Does that sound like something you guys might want to do?

Do people want shirts for this event?

I will handle the sale of shirts, but I do not have the time to find someone to do the printing. If we want to have shirts made, we will need to act now.

I wish I had more time, but I am stretched to the brink as it is. I am putting out a call for help.

To raise funds for the ECC, I have decided to raffle off one of my spare part.

So.

I have NIB, ATE 19mm Master Cylinder (worth $180 something) from Pelican.

Tickets will be $20, cash, at the ECC.

This is a great addition to your car, and all the proceeds will go directly to defraying the costs of setting this gig up.

Zach

Posted by: Dr Evil Aug 11 2008, 02:11 PM

There are costs? Talk to me. I am willing to raffle off a tranny rebuild or a rebuilt tranny depending on how many sign up. I also have bolt sets that I am bringing as door prises and such. All the other rallies have hit me up, why not you guys?

Posted by: angerosa Aug 11 2008, 02:45 PM

Zach - What kinds of costs are there? I'm happy to donate cash. What's needed? Jason

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Aug 11 2008, 03:22 PM

An ECC costs a couple hundred dollars to put on - mostly all by the host. Me being who I am, I would rather raffle something then to raise the funds then pass a hat. I guess I am not good at asking for things.

That said, I do have this spare master cylinder. I could send it back to Pelican, but this way I get to raise a little money for an event I enjoy w/o putting in new funds.

Fair warning (and some NoVa 914 guys should chime in if this isn't accurate):

I-95 from Springfield (I-495 interchange) to Fredericksburg has extremely heavy traffic and may be stop and go at any time. US 29 can be accessed from I-66 via the Capital Beltway. US 29 has less traffic and it's a gorgeous drive.

That stretch of road is the pits on any weekday from around 3pm - 6:30pm. However, I have never run into major traffic on a Saturday morning, and I used to head down that way fairly frequently.

Personally, I'd suggest taking 301 as far as you can. Though I guess 301 between Bowie and Waldorf can also suck at times.

I'm either going to be taking rt 15 down, or taking 95 to 66. It will be a toss up on which one speaks to me that morning.

Posted by: zymurgist Aug 17 2008, 12:13 PM

Pretty much. The particles floating around are a combination of hot break, cold break, and hops. I plan to let this kick for a couple of days until fermentation subsides, then siphon to secondary fermenter. I love glass bottles... the fermentation process produces heat and you get some good convection currents in the fermenter. As Chauncey Gardener said, "I like to watch."

Yes - I agree. I've seen 95 South stopped on Saturdays. 66 West to 29 South is the way to go and nicer scenery.

From the junction of 495 and 95 South, 66W is only about 8 miles away and it should be a fast 8 miles.

Posted by: jimkelly Aug 21 2008, 09:21 AM

per well known and respected admin - nailing is no longer done.

we will need to keep it high ourselves

jim

Posted by: slackin' at work Aug 21 2008, 12:58 PM

it's getting close!!
sorry I haven't been around the forum too much lately. been super-busy.

it's going to be a great time. the only possible bummer is we haven't had ANY rain in like 6 weeks and things aren't quite as green as I'd like. we're probably going to have a burn-ban in place soon if we don't get any rain. so more than likely we won't be able to have a big-ol-bon fire. that just means we will need to drink more. beerchug.gif

the leaves won't be changing down here then. we're a few weeks early. mid october is the best leaf-time. if you want to see some views anyway, skyline drive is about 40 minutes from here. If you're carb'd, make sure your carbs are tuned, because the highway to get to the parkway likes to eat little aircooled 4-cylinders for lunch.

we have plenty of room in the field for people to put up a tent saturday night. we just purchased the surounding 21 acres so now we can fit about 3000 914s... so the more-the-merrier.

there are plenty of hotels in charlottesville. from cheap to 5-stars depending on what you want. downtown charlottesville is a great place and is about 9 miles away... so everything is pretty convenient. it's good UVA doesn't have a home game or else I think my field would be the last option in town.

traveling from points north, I would also suggest taking US 29. 95 can be a little tricky especially in a 914. plus it's not that much longer to cut over to 29south via 66west.

anyway, can't wait to meet all of you who are coming. should be a blast!

Hey Baltimore - Washington - and anyone further North: want to meet up somewhere to caravan down there? Leesburg would be an idea. "Type47" and "Root", any ideas where to meet?

Skyline Craw might be fun but it's not in the direct route.. maybe some other time.

Matt a good place to meet in Leesburg would be in the Safeway parking lot. There is a Roy Rodgers there and is right on RT 15 on the south side of town.

I was asked about cheap (but clean) hotels nearby.

there are 2 hotels right off rt64 and conveniently located about 6 miles away from my house. on the same road even, so it's a straight shot out.

they are directly across the street from each other on 5th street so either one is fine.

we had friends stay at both when we got married and there were no complaints.
I think the sleep inn is newer and is the cheaper of the two.

So are you south of 64 on the 5th street exit? That'll be easy to get to.
-Mike

yes, Im 6.25 miles south on 5th street from 64. easy-peaszy.
5th street turns into old lynchburg road.

the road starts off 4 lanes (2 each way) with a grass median... then gets narrower as you head out from town. going to double yellow line, then down to no line and narrow. PLEASE everyone mind your side of the road. it's a windy road and us locals tend to haul a$$ down it. it's a little hairy for the un-initiated. you Autox guys will feel right at home. driving.gif

as far as hotels... remember, the days of $20/night is over. I think ~130, especially for a saturday night, is a decent deal.

I'm working on the final details on the shirts. We're going with the "work" style shirt. The back will be silk screened with the logo. We may also have the option of embroidery on the front for your name or username. I'll post pictures as soon as can find a picture of the shirt we want.

Where is a picture of the shirt from the other Ramble that we discussed earlier?
Searching through 12 pages is killing me!

Got to stay in a hotel, according to Susan! mad.gif

Just called Sleep Inn, talked to Drew and got a suite for $139.99 for Saturday night
Sept. 27th.

According to Drew there are only smokin' smoke.gif rooms left at Sleep Inn.
Regular smokin' smoke.gif rooms are $129.99 ouch!

I'll be bringing, Susan, $ for raffle's, and 2-clutch alignment tools for raffling!
Kyle may show on biker.gif as well!

Matt! Best caravan meet point for me is Gilbert's Corner intersection of Rt. 50 and Rt. 15. Do you know it?

I'll bring at least 2 of these for raffling-Attached Image

Gilberts Corner intersection of Rt 50 and 15 is the best place to meet. There are some of us who would be backtracking slightly if we were to meet in Leesburg. I second this caravan meeting location. Does anyone know the area? Is there McDonald's or something out there where we can grab a coffee and assemble in their parking lot while we wait for everyone to get there?

Hey - I just realized I've been a member for 1 year as of yesterday!

Nope nothing nada little bit further down where 15 crosses 66 there is a Sheetz.

Posted by: angerosa Aug 22 2008, 04:05 PM

Any NOVA people want to suggest a place right off of 66 to meet with lots of parking space and maybe somewhere to use a restroom and get a coffee? What about Fair lakes shopping area? Is that Sheetz right off 66 on rt15?

Yes the Sheetz is right on 15 near Haymarket before you cross the train tracks in your heading south on 15 it is on the left hand side. Stopped there a many a time. It is near 66 and 55.

It's about 3 hours from Frederick to Charlottesville.. with Leesburg, Haymarket (rt66 & 15), Warrenton, and Culpepper as 'big' cities to pass through, i.e. meeting points??

Let's be sure to coordinate, I'll be glad to caravan with you for safety.

jim, it looks like we'll have grub going at 3pm.
obviously beer will be going much earlier. biggrin.gif

as stated before, people are more than welcome to crash in the field for the evening. (ESPECIALLY if "too" much fun has been had!)

I think volume 11 will go until about 9-10, then the bonfire will probably take over. It seems whenever there is a bonfire, things end up getting mellow... with lots of drunk people staring into the embers. biggrin.gif

so my advise is plan to stay the night and drive right to work the next morning.

Welby do you and Mike want to meet up at the " dairy Queen " exit around 9-9:30 ish ?? Let me know, Mike has my # and I'll give it to you if you want, Right now I'm planning on driving the 944 if it passes my shake down for the next couple weeks driving.gif

Sounds good just let me know where the "Dairy Queen" exit is. Also I have been wanting to meet up w/ you anyhow. I had time off when Mike was down and would have been glad to help however I could but couldn't get ahold of Mike and had no way to find the hideout.

update:

after playing phone tag for some time, finally got the grub all figured out.
we're having some good-'ol pork BBQ, beans, slaw, and chicken from Jinx's Pit Stop BBQ here in charlottesville.
Ive been to many parties over the years with him catering and it's always a hit.

here are some more recent national accolades (you may recognize the sources):
"...do not miss Jinx's Barbecue, which offers hickory smoked barbecue and some seriously down-home atmosphere that ranks with some of the country's best."
- Wall Street Journal

“this juicy ’sammich’ on Texas toast will transport your mouth to the Mississippi Delta.”

I haven't been on the board for awhile due to the rantings in the Sandbox. (I know, don't go there if you don't like it.) It would be great to meet nice people that share a common interest and have a good time. That's hard to do when you know they despise everything you believe in. If we change our minds here's the three contenders I'd like to nominate-

I've been practicing too! But mostly drinkin' songs - Here's one of my fav's wub.gif

A long time ago, way back in history,
when all there was to drink was nothin but cups of tea.
Along came a man by the name of Charlie Mops,
and he invented a wonderful drink and he made it out of hops.

He must have been an admiral a sultan or a king,
and to his praises we shall always sing.
Look what he has done for us he's filled us up with cheer!
Lord bless Charlie Mops, the man who invented beer beer beer
tiddly beer beer beer.

The Curtis bar, the James' Pub, the Hole in the Wall as well
one thing you can be sure of, its Charlie's beer they sell
so all ye lads a lasses at eleven O'clock ye stop
for five short seconds, remember Charlie Mops 1 2 3 4 5

A barrel of malt, a bushel of hops, you stir it around with a stick,
the kind of lubrication to make your engine tick.
40 pints of wallop a day will keep away the quacks.
Its only eight pence hapenny and one and six in tax, 1 2 3 4 5

He must have been an admiral a sultan or a king,
and to his praises we shall always sing.
Look what he has done for us he's filled us up with cheer!
Lord bless Charlie Mops, the man who invented beer beer beer
tiddly beer beer beer.

The Lord bless Charlie Mops!

I like beer Cuz it's good
I drink beer because I should
if there is a song to sing
I sing it and beer you bring
I drink beer when I am sad
Cuz the beer it make me glad
now there's nothing left to say
so lets go drink beer

BEER IS GOOD
BEER IS GOOD
BEER IS GOOD
...and stuff

BEER IS GOOD
BEER IS GOOD
BEER IS GOOD
...lets go drink some
BEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRR

When it's warm it tastes real crappy
but cold beer will make me happy
When I throw up on the floor
I can go and drink some more
they say beer will make me dunb
it are no good with pizza
now that we have drunk some beer
lets go drive a car

Hey Evan,

Shirt sales were a short term deal this year. we took a bath on them last year, and this year needed to make sure that we covered costs.

Link to the caravans can be found on my sig.

People can show around 1ish or 2ish, food gets there ~3.

You can stay the night on site in a tent, or find a room at a local hotel - though you will have to do a little footwork (err, google work) to find whats closest.

Address to the site is in bold on page 1 post 1 of this thread.

I'll see you there Saturday!

New snag on the tunes, Scotty has resolved to taking his 944 so he has no room for his drums. Is there anyone that can swing by and pick them up and then drop them off afterward?

If no one can pick them up and drop them off, we have no drums sad.gif

They are in Moseley, VA

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Sep 23 2008, 09:14 AM

Hey Scotty,

I'd come down Friday and throw your drums in either the Prius or the Scoob, but Erin reminded me that I have to be home friday night to listen to the house contractor. I'll see if I can get the go ahead to come down later Fri night if that is cool with you - but no promises.

Can anyone else closer step up?

I have it on good authority that there is a Harris Teeter store at the intersection of rt 15 and 29 that is easily seen/can't miss from either road, 15 or 29. that should have a big enough parking lot to gather the troops. How about meeting there? 11?

Posted by: angerosa Sep 24 2008, 12:18 PM

After much research on the painfully slow internet here at work during lunch time...

The store is actually a Bloom Grocery store. Bloom is Food Lion's upscale store.

Here's store website with map:

http://www.shopbloom.com/YourBloom/storeDetail.aspx?id=2718

The address is the same:

15201 Washington St, Haymarket, VA

See everyone there at 11 am on Saturday.

Now let's talk phone trees...

(DAMN - I thought I was posting in the ECC caravans thread)

Posted by: type47 Sep 24 2008, 01:49 PM

careful, you're at the intersection of 15 and 55 near 66 in Haymarket. We want further on down the road to the intersection of 15 and 29. if you're on the Bloom link, zoom out and go south on 15 until the intersection of 15 and 29.

Posted by: angerosa Sep 24 2008, 01:59 PM

You know what Jim, you're right (I edited my previous post) but I'm sticking to my suggestion. It's right off 66 for the NoVa and beltway contingent. It's right off rt 15 for the Frederick and points North contingent. Grocery stores have big parking lots, bathrooms and food. There might be 20 vehicles. I'm sticking with this suggestion. I don't see anything at the corner of 29 and 15. This spot is probably not two miles from there. No one has to back track. What do you think?

And there's a Sheetz right next to it in the same plaza parking lot!

Posted by: type47 Sep 24 2008, 03:24 PM

i'm OK with any meeting place that everybody knows about. to get to 15 and 29, my actual route would be 66W (slight detour on 50W to get root), get back on 66W then past the gainesville exit (to avoid traffic in that area, traffic lights, etc) to the rt 15 exit, then south on 15 to 15 and 29. I can just as easily go N on 15 to Blooms and Sheetz.

Jim, I think you've described most of our cars coming out to this event. I'll add the fogged up windows to list as well. This will be my first roadtrip out into the rain in a 914 in about 23 years. Somehow I don't expect it to improve except for the Rainex inside and out. If my electronics stay dry enough, I'll be happy. driving.gif

Sooo, I spoke with the king of boom, Scotty B and we have figured out some things for the drums. Since I will be staying at Matt's house in Frederick, MD on Fri night I will have 2 hours shaved off of my trip. As such, MapQuest says I can make it to Scotty's and then to the site in a little over 4 hours which is doable.

HOWEVER, if one of you mooks lives closer (Welby, others) speak up so we can save some Co2. I will get the damn drums if no one else can. Zach offered as well, but I am skeptical that it would be a good idea for him.

I dont know when I will leave Matt's, nor where I will meet up if at all to caravan. I will be driving the VUE so its not like I will be missed from the pics.

So, anyone willing to take a small detour to Moselsy, VA to get the drums so we can have some fun?

Posted by: ws91420 Sep 24 2008, 09:16 PM

I will have my Aztek and camping gear and the family. How much are we talking about?

Posted by: Dr Evil Sep 24 2008, 09:33 PM

Not sure how to explain it. I will have several guitars and a largish amp. You can always dump some of your camping gear into Scotty's 944. I will be doing that if I pick his stuff up. If you can PM him and see if it is feasible that would be AWESOME! I bet it will work if you do the swap of cargo.

Posted by: plas76targa Sep 24 2008, 09:57 PM

THE Frederick caravan will start at 10:00 am sharp. Who's coming here first? I haven't heard From anyone yet. You can come to my house before 10 or meet us at the Beckley's Country store - at the Willow Road exit on Rt 15 south.

We'll leave Frederick and stay on 15 south all the way to the 15/29 intersection.

Jim, I'll pm my phone number to you.

And HOORAY, I repaced the fuel pump tonight and the car started. I'll drop it off the blocks tomorrow and test drive it. Cross yer fingers!

Just to make this clear....
I'm proposing we meet at a big grocery store parking lot with a gas station at the junction of two major roads where everyone coming from the North and East will have to go past. THERE IS NO BACKTRACKING. You don't have to get off 66 and go North and then go back South. You just get off 66 and go South and Bloom is right there off 15. There is no North to Blooms and Sheetz.

If everyone is looking at maps and thinking they are going to get off 66 at rt29 and come down 29 to the meeting place think again. Read type47's post up above. type47, root and I live really close to the meeting place, you don't want to get off 66 at 29 and take 29 down to the meeting place. There's million lights and busy traffic through Gainsville. You want to keep going on 66 and get off on rt15 and go south whatever meeting place we choose.

Have I convinced anyone yet? Or does everyone still want to meet two miles further South down route 15 in the middle of nowhere where there is nothing and no place to park but on the side of busy rt 29 so we can have 18 wheelers drive by and kick up rocks on our cars? (I just had a truck throw a rock up and put a nice size chip in my bumper on the DC beltway last week)

Mike Spraggi (sp?) - see you a Beckley's just before 10 - or come a bit early to my place if you want. I'm only a mile and half west of there. Willow to Willowbrooke (left), to Opposumtown (right), half mile to Meadowbrooke (left), bear right, .. you'll see the 914 or I'll hear you (check picture on first post).

Dr Evil - I can take either Noel or Heidi with me, if some one (Mike S, above?) can take the other.

Gas here is $3.45-50 and plentiful confused24.gif

Posted by: stepuptotheMike Sep 25 2008, 07:58 PM

it started the thursday before Ike hit houston. Everybody and their brother wigged out and made a run on the stations because there was a rumor going around that gas was going to jump to $5/gal. It was at about $3.60 where I live just across the border in South Carolina. Well everybody cleaned out the stations and sure enough the price shot up through the roof. Ever since then, the stations have been struggling to keep up with everybody. Self fulfilling prophecy.

Last night everybody started another run on the pumps and this morning was a mad house of everybody trying to get every last drop they could. All the stations around me are out of gas.

I hear that Atlanta is out of gas and that Nashville had a run on the pumps due to nothing but rumored shortage. When everybody decided they need it all of a sudden, they bring the gas cans too.

Guys, I hate to do it, but I'm going to have to bail on this weekend. Just too many things seem to be stacked against me in the deck... gas is scarce in CLT, it's raining like a mojo all day today, and I just found a window leak on the side of the house.....the list goes on. headbang.gif

I hope you guys have a great time and that the weather clears out early in the morning for you on Saturday. Enjoy some tunes and some outstanding brew. beer3.gif

Somebody please take lots of pictures.

I'll be looking forward to ECC 2009.

Regards,

Mike

U SUK !! Call me if you change your mind. I think Welby, maybe Teener Tim and I will be pushing our meet time back a bit, so you still have time..........

Posted by: angerosa Sep 26 2008, 07:04 PM

I started beer3.gif already! I have to go try and see how much camping geer I can fit in my car now. I bet my tent doesn't fit.

Anyone else coming up 64 through the Richmond area, Welby and I will be meeting up at the Gum Springs exit at 10:30-ish. If you want to join make yourself known NOW !!!

We made it! The rain wasn't as bad as I expected today, and arrived w/o incident.
Leesa and I did Monticello today, and will explore Skyline drive early a.m.
We will sleep dry tonight!
These are some beautiful and fun roads, so bring the TEENERS!

my cars 914 v8 with no door windows - not good choice for rain

my other car 914 t4 - starting problems - i was gonna wire a switch from the HOT on the starter to the solenoid - but it was so rusted - it snapped - i installed a new mini starter but once done found out it does not engage the fffing flywheel - wheel - 914 t4 is a not go unless i drive it there without a starter idea.gif i could have swore i had a oem starter laying around mad.gif

well - the weather in the AM is gonna make me choose between 914v8 and subaru impreza.

I bet it does.

Mine did the same thing, at first. The mini starters draw a lot of current. If your starter solenoid is busted, you may have enough current drop to not spin the starter.

Zach

Posted by: jimkelly Sep 26 2008, 07:40 PM

the HOT stud on my oem starter busted - so i installed the brand new mini starter i had laying around - it spun but did not engage flywheel at all. so i then wired it directly to hot using a momentary switch - same thing happened.

40% chance of precip - i am leaning subaru.

I'm going for it! I'm more scared that my car won't make it there and back than I am of the rain and I live relatively close!

I bet I bring the most eclectic music for my car. Not to start the music debate over agian or anything. I'm actually bringing CDs not an mp3 player.

I'm fuch'd. I have to bail out tomorrow.
I have the shirts and a couple goodies for the raffle.
I need someone to hand these items off to.
If need be, I can make it out to Matt's house.
Is anyone coming out 70 past Ellicott City?

The sun is shining in Hagerstown, Md. and the roads are drying up.

weather.com shows a 50 percent chance of rain for Charlottesville.

intellicast.com has a radar loop that shows storms moving up the Chesapeake, and also over the Blue Ridge, moving north. That is to say, to the west and the far east of Charlottesville.

I'm back home now. Thanks for hosting the party, slackin'. The BBQ was awesome... you could smell the hickory smoke before the aluminum foil came off the containers. And the tent was an absolutely necessary part of the day... the rain came down in buckets at times, but it was still a lot of fun.

As always we had a great time! aktion035.gif

Sorry we got back so late this morning with the bagels. We got up a bit late 'cause Susan was a bit hungover. Then drove all over Charlottesville trying to find mega coffee and bagels for the overnight campers to no avail! When we finally got back to Chris's with bagels everyone had left for home.

I now remember a few more falls and a lot more slurred conversations. biggrin.gif I was a little over-the-top. What's that saying about first impression?? I guess every party has "that guy".

it was the CIDER!

anyway, thanks again for everyone who braved the rain. I can't wait to see some more pictures.

biggrin.gif if you werent there then you missed a great time. sean and i were the first to arrive. the host chris is one of your typical teener owners. he has one of the nicest pieces of property i have seen. what a great place to have a bQ. it was a shock to see 9 teeners venture out in the rain. chris had a huge tent that was perfect for our purpose. food and drink was plentiful. when the band played i knew it was time to go....lol not really. we did the 9.5 hrs straight back to connecticut. it was nice to meet the NEW people and to see all our old friends. my only bitch is that due to the rain we did not get a group shot. maybe next year.... ray biggrin.gif driving-girl.gif driving.gif

Well, the board crashed before I could post this, so I am saving the post and will put it up tomorrow at work. I'm too tired to wait for the board to come back up.

Original post:
Okay, so here is it, 8:30 pm Sunday, and I feel like I am about to fall off my feet. That was a long drive home... And I WISH I had stayed for some bagels! I stopped to get *something* *anything* in my stomach and the result was nearly disaster. Left the farm at 10, got home at 2:30. I needed a nap, my son wanted to play. Nap never happened.

Here are some of the pics I took. Not too many pictures this year due to the rain.

Shortly after getting there. It had just finished POURING. I darted out between rain bands to get a few pics.
IPB Image
IPB Image
IPB Image

So, those three pics were right after getting there. Then there was this long period where stuff happened and I forgot I had a camera. Actually, I was playing with my new HD video camera, and watching the movie with Erin tonight I kept thinking "I don't remember that part... that part is a bit fuzzy..."

Sunday morning, after the fog started to burn off, we had this:
Our tent city (if you look close at the door to the red and black tent, you will see authentic Dr Evil vomit - watch your step!):

They did not rust away over night!

Chris' car reflected in Matt's bling'n hub cap:

Now, when I can figure out hoe to get video from my camera copied to my computer for editing, I'll put together the vid the Heidi and I shot.

The party was awesome. Not as many people or cars, due to the weather. I am guessing we had about 30 or so people there. The site was amazing. Chris is a funny drunk. biggrin.gif It was great to see everyone one again.

I guess its time to start planning for next year...

I was sooo lucky. I got home and my son had just gone down for his nap 15 minutes prior. I had a couple hours to collect myself.

On a brighter note - it helped that I drove all the way home with my top off. The air did me good!

I also want to thank Mr. and Mrs. Slackin' for hosting the event. Their estate and mountain views were breath-taking. Everything was perfect and their hospitality made it seem as if they were professional event planners.

Thanks also to the planning committee for the coordination of times, locals, and fund-raising so that most of us there just had to show up and enjoy.

Oh, fire is easy, even with wood that has soaked all day. If you can keep *something* burning to dry out the small stuff and then keep the small stuff burning until you can get the big stuff burning. I just kept feeding the small stuff into the (straw & card board) kindling. The straw was Ray's idea, and it was perfect. Once that fire got going, it would have taken a deluge to put it out. It was still burning when I left Sunday at 10.

Zach

ps - I have kept bumping into a sore spot on my finger, and could not recall what I may have done to it. I just remembered that I grabbed a piece of wood with a little ember on it. its the little things, sometimes.

My shoes were too wet for that to be a problem, and I was taking care to make sure my footing was safe. I do have a big black mark on one of my Chucks that must have been from trying to kick the burning log back up on the fire though.

next time we have the chance to have a camp / bon fire, I am going to bring some cut up oak pallets. They make some of the best fire wood ever, and I have a few taking up space.

As the days wear on, images from this weekend's event flash across my mind. Hey Root, did you leave your red chair at the event again? I didn't see it before I left.

I was so bummed since the party because I didn't get to hang out or even see the fire... I love fires. but then, apparently I did:

Yep! Got my red chair this time!
I only leave it at your place.

not to complain - but i think the band needs to select about 30-40 songs - get music sheets - make copies and pass around - and practice them - for ecc2009

If Scotty brought drums it would have worked because I would have been the only one with a loud enough amp happy11.gif

I think I remember at least 2 songs....one short Pink Floyd song, and one 3 hour Grateful Dead song... ;-) Next year it'll all be better when it's dry, there are drums, the guitars are dry, it will be good.

Zach, in the midst of all the festivities, you didn't forget the "chalk outline" paint job on the Kaiser did you?

I think you should pick a longer Dead song next time.

Crap. I didn't die, did I?
No, no recollection. Pics, or it didn't happen. poke.gif

I chose to stop drinking about the time that we started playing with fire. I'm glad I did. Probably saved me from joining the "I puked at the ECC" crowd. From when I light the cigar I bummed off Mike to when we started the fire the party is a bit of a blur. Once the fire started going, I remember stuff again.

So, did I fall and someone did my chalk outline, or did I chalk outline someone who fell?

Hahah, I didn't think you were that far gone.

You were talking Kaiser paint jobs, and somehow from our shared Baltimore driving experiences we agree upon:
Flat black paint, and a chalk outline on the hood.

av-943.gif The last three pages of this thread are classic. With all the different recollections floating around, it's a pretty sure thing that no convictions will result. smash.gif

It was. The camaraderie, food, and setting were top notch. Unfortunately I missed an opportunity to explore the wonderment of the technicolor yawn barf.gif with the best of the best.

I think I should have brought a full keg of Oatmeal Stout. beer3.gif

So it sounds like the shirts got passed around a bit. Anybody have an idea who has my shirt? XXL with Mike on the front. If somebody could PM me, would appreciate it.

IIRC, it is still in the box. Matt Plasket has the shirts (unless Rick has them again now).

My wife said the same but then added "God, it stinks like smoke and mud - get it away from me."

The shirts were 5 degrees of awesome. Big props to Chris for the design, and Rick for getting them made. smilie_pokal.gif

I have created the master planning thread for ECC 2009.

Just back in town and have a decent connection again, so I just wanted to throw out a thanks to everyone like Chris and Zach for stepping up and creating a fun get together! Leesa and I had a GREAT time and she finally got her road trip in a 914 that didn't leave her on the side of the road. (where's the adventure in that?)

Looking foward to next year! beerchug.gif

I think I am still recovering or having flash backs, so not sure if I said thanks to Host Fun Drunk Chris and Zach. Great cookout, good food, awesome beer, company present? Well everyone was great to see again and meet new. Think I hit a deer carcass on the way back & with a THUNK threw out the alignment. Not sure.
