Posted by: SirAndy Jan 14 2004, 10:54 AM

there is NO reason why anybody in the greater bay area couldn't make it for this one!

from the roadglue list:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
RoadGlue.com Winter Meet - Saturday January 17th, 2004 Starts @ 10:00
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since Randy have been very busy, I asked him if I could put together this
latest tour. I hope to see a good turnout on Saturday, I know it's short notice
but those who want to attend the tour and lunch, please RSVP me with #
attending at: a356b@aol.com

The Roadglue.com NAPA/SOLANO Winter tour will start out at the parking lot of
the VISTA POINT in Napa, CA (where you see the huge statue of a man using an
old wine press) it's at the intersection of HWY 12 / 29, Hwy 121, HWY 221 in
Napa. It's right there at the split of all 3 highways if you look on a map.
>From there we will get on HWY 121 thru Napa and follow the signs for "Lake
Berryessa/Silverado Trail" staying on HWY 121 toward Lake Berryessa. We will take
HWY 121 over the mountain to HWY 128 (Keep Following the signs to Lake
Berryessa) Take a right onto HWY 128 and follow it to Monticello Dam where we can get
out and take some pictures, cool your brakes, ect. From there we head down
the hill still on HWY 128 and take a right turn onto Pleasants Valley Road
toward Vacaville. (right before you get to Lake Solano). A few miles down the
road we will take a left onto Cantelow Road (over another nice hill) follow
Cantelow Road to Stieger Hill Road (stay right at the fork in the road)
and then take a right at the end of Stieger Hill onto Gibson Canyon Road
(which drops us into Downtown Vacaville) From there you will take a Left onto
Monte Vista, Right onto Depot Street, Left onto Elmira and right onto Peabody
Road. Follow Peabody Road down to Alamo Drive where we will Meet for Lunch
around 11:30 at Vicini's Pizzeria in Vacaville for some REAL New York City Pizza.
Vicini's Pizzeria is Located at 1971 Alamo Drive in Vacaville, CA 95687. We
already have reservations but I would like to get a good head count by the end
of the week.

This tour is basically 50 + miles of up and down hill twisties. (these roads
were made for your 914) The scenery is awesome and the weather is supposed to
be nice. Hope to see everyone saturday morning in Napa.
P.O.C. for the Lunch and Tour will be Dominic Cilia e-mail: a356b@aol.com

Having driven portions of this route, it sounds like a great run. driving.gif Notice is a little late but it should be a good time. I'll be there barring some surprise.

Anybody from the San Jose area want to meet for the drive to Napa?

Carl

Posted by: McMark Jan 14 2004, 07:53 PM

I'll be there for the start, but I probably won't be able to do the run.

Posted by: ChrisReale Jan 14 2004, 08:39 PM

I'll be there if Mark D and Brad hurry up laugh.gif
But chances are prolly not...

Posted by: ppickerell Jan 14 2004, 10:05 PM

Damn you, I will be steelhead fishing on Oregon! Looks like the weather will hold. Have fun!

Posted by: jonwatts Jan 15 2004, 12:02 AM

I will be sandblasting parts for powder coating. It's a good enough excuse because I still have delusions I'll be able to drive my car to the West Coast Classic.

Posted by: smrz914 Jan 15 2004, 03:51 AM

I'm not gonna have a 914 (I might) but if not I'll take the closest thing I have to it Del Sol and maybe bring the LED taillights!

Posted by: McMark Jan 15 2004, 09:59 AM

Yeah Paul! I'd love to see the lights!

Chris, your car won't be ready, but you should come anyway. wink.gif I'll be in a 93 civic since my engine is in pieces. I could drive the venison wagon with no windshield and no top...... nahh! lol2.gif

Posted by: Dominic Jan 15 2004, 10:37 PM

driving.gif If anyone else is planning on going on the tour please shoot me an e-mail @ a356b@aol.com
I'd like to get a good headcount before saturday. Hope to see a good turnout.
Thanks,
Dominic

I'm out. I need to weld up Chris' car and get the engine back into it (with the test injection setup).

I think I will be changing the oil pan on a civic... otherwise I'd be interested. Just got my car back together last night, have not driven it yet tho.

You guys have fun. Don't any of you drive into a bridge or anything.

We've got a few of the locals getting together for a breakfast tomorrow.

Posted by: Dominic Jan 16 2004, 11:45 PM

driving.gif Toward the bottom of the map, above the napa county airport, you'll see a marking for SUSCOL, it's right there where highway 121 splits. Look for the huge Napa Valley monument/ vista point. There should be a parking lot at this vista point where we can all meet up. I should be there between 9:45 and 10:00 AM. I'll be driving my marathon blue 73' 2.0
See you in the morning!

Posted by: Andyrew Jan 17 2004, 12:01 AM

I cant go, I have to study for finals, and dads working on the 944 track car. Scott, you going? I might be able to hitch a ride with you..

Next time your looking for interesting roads in Napa try Atlas Peak Road. Just off the Silverado Trail.

Great hillclimb (steep) that goes up into a valley above Napa that few realize exists. Up in the valley is Atlas Peak Vinyards (http://www.atlaspeak.com/home.asp).

man, 17 sucks, doesn't it? laugh.gif

Posted by: McMark Jan 17 2004, 12:59 AM

It's late, but here's an update of the map. The faint purple color shows how to actually get to the grape crusher. It doesn't have its own exit.

Kinda disappointing. Oh well. Hopefully we'll have more warning next time.

The roads are awesome! This is a great run. It's too bad more people couldn't go. I plan on replicating the run later in the year (when my car is driving) as well as doing an around the Napa Valley drive that's very scenic when things first start to bloom. It's a slow meandering drive, but very nice on a good day with the top off. Things to look forward to.

I'm thinking we should try to setup a run every other weekend. Sounds good or not? I won't have much ambition to start it until my engine is back together. Maybe starting in March.

yes, the route was awesome!
actually i think it was good that we only had 3 914s. this way, we didn't have to wait for anybody and could haul a** down (and up) the twisties.

what a great drive! driving.gif
thank you Dominic for scouting out the route.

Dominic and Carl were kind enough to drive slow enough so my little 1.8 could keep up with them. wink.gif

oh, and Paul showed up at the destination Pizza place and joined us for lunch. he had a prototype of his LED taillights with him.
very nice! wub.gif

The Fun Run was really a FUN RUN today. The roads were GREAT with no traffic and we didn't have to stop and wait for Brad. We only had 3 cars, well, Paul came along a little later so there was a 4th, we just didn't know it.

Those were great 914 roads and we kept up a good pace. Photos follow ...

Yea, yea I was late but I did have some of the LED lights to show off. The roads were great even if there were some missing parts to the instructions but I got there. People seemd to be really nice and would let you by. Not many cars or bicycles on the roads so that was nice. The 6 was really clean, very nice car. Wish i got there sooner so i could have more time looking at the cars.

Posted by: Dominic Jan 18 2004, 11:20 AM

driving.gif Thanks again to all who attended yesterdays fun run. Those roads really are a blast when no one is in your way!
Carl, thanks for posting those pictures.
For those who may be interested, my Marathon Blue Metallic 73' 2.0S (the car in the pictures) is for sale. Need to make room for my project...another 73' 2.0
Thanks,
Dominic
