I want to get my motor on the run-in stand I built and touch it off.
Anyone want to come over and play?
Anytime is good, unless my wife goes into labor. Then I kick you all out and go have a baby.
Things I need to do:
Get more dino oil.
Put together the "dashboard" for the testing stand (tach, ignition, ?throttle?)
Mount the engine and tranny on the stand
Run it.
I got a lot done today. I bet we could get it running tomorrow if I had help.
Zach
bump. Some of you guys have to be kicking around here this evening.
Zach
If you wanna move about 4 hours closer tonight I could make it
What he said. I will be spending time with my kids tomorrow.
Meh. I new it was a short notice kinda plea. I'm heading into the garage.
443.....710.....5800 If any one decides to come., just gimme a call.
Zach
Today (Saturday)? Tomorrow? How far are you from Hagerstown?
Too short a notice man! I have my daughters Bday to prepare for Sunday......I'd love to try and drive the beast up though!!! Good luck!
Josh
So, no engine break in today.
I did not get firm contact from anyone, so took a leasurely pace getting to work this AM. I got the engine on the run-in stand. I was putting on the tin (I HATE doing that - stupid jig saw puzzle) around noon when Ken (Zymurgist) showed up - a very pleasant surprise. We got a little done, and was looking very promising to get the engine broken in.
As we were mounting the tranny, we noticed that one of the engine case to tranny studs was bent. DOH! So, that pretty much killed all possibility of running the motor today. I ordered 2 new studs from McMaster - Carr, but they won't get here till next week sometime.
I fabbed up a SIMPLE throttle cable bracket for the engine, and got the dashboard underway for the run in stand (power, starter button, tach, hand throttle, maybe an oil light will be added, but not really needed). I am trying to figure out a cheap and easy way to make a hand throttle on the dash. Ken took pics, and will post them up in here later.
I'm really close. If it had not been for the bent stud (not sure how that happened, it was good in October at Rod's place) I think I would have been breaking in the new pistons and rings.

Zach contemplating the work
Don't remember what he was doing in this shot but he looks serious...

Not to be a downer Zach my man but dont you want to break in the engine with a load? as in the cars weight supplying positive a negitive pressure on the rings?
I did alot of reseach on this matter and the consensus seems to be to beat on it to seat them rings!
I could be wrong but then I wouldnt be alone....
Good luck on the baby and the other baby!
Good luck with the light off Zach. If we don't hear from you in a couple of days we will assume that the noise and shock put your wife in labour
I am going to use the break in that Raby described. 2500 RPM for 20 minutes. Then tune the carbs, do another valve adjustment, and put the whole mess in the car.
But, not today.
I'M A DAD! FUCH YEAH!
Zach

Zach
well - you can forget about getting a good night's sleep for a while - but it is for a good cause
It was nice being your friend and I will miss you. So much for a social life
I am sure Erin will appreciate you posting the pic with her in it
Awwwwwwwwwww, cute.
Congratulations, we'll watch the kid grow up on the 914 World Forum and field your parenting questions in the "Sandbox".
Paul
Congrats to you and your family.
Zach and Erin - Congratulations.
Ditto what mike said - there goes your social life
on second thought balance the two as best you can.
The fun years have just begun!
Congrats on the little one Zach!! My 13 yr old is what got me back to 914's. When you get ready to try the motor again I'll be happy to come help. On the trottle cable, an old lawnmower setup should work ok for a static setting. Got one out by the shed I can bring if needed. Jon
Congrats to you and your family!!!!!!
Children are truly a blessing.
I'm certain that all of the work you have put into the 914 has been secretly preparing you for parenthood!
Once in your life you had lots of time.
What did you do with all that time?
You have traded it away for real parenthood.
A good parent learns effective ways to catch time.
Because, "Once a parent! Always a parent!"
CONGRADULATIONS!
Congratulations Zach!
My daughter was born on April 13 but that was 16 years ago. It seems like yesterday. Time goes by so fast. Enjoy every moment.
Congrats Zach!!
I'll add my congratulations too Zach! Now you're really a man and your life has changed forever.
Congratulations!!!!!!
I was wondering when your wife would finally have the baby. My little guys is now 4 months old and a giggly smiley cutey.
It's also my wife's birthday 4/13...
Fun, fun, fun....
April babies ROCK, this is true....Hey I am one and today is my Daughters 4th.....time does fly!
Back on track. I called LN and got 4 quarts of BP break in oil, and a case of BP 20w50.
New studs came in yesterday, so the tranny is mounted again.
All I need to do is get oil in there, plug in the wires, and I am ready to start it.
Zach
Wow, I am surprised and impressed. I hope it goes well.
