914World.com _ 914World Garage _ the $5k engine.....

Posted by: scottb May 22 2008, 06:07 PM

i haven't seen any thread regarding the $5k engine with feedback from a purchaser so i will start.

my story is a bit convoluted in that once i received the motor, i had so damn many different projects going on, that the motor sat. i finally hauled my car to chris and ed at CFR to do the transplant for me and i picked up my car yesterday.

so the first thing i noticed is that there is torque throughout the rpms. it just pulls constantly. it is a much better responding engine than my old stock 2.0. i drove it home about 35 miles and had an absolute blast. it seems to be happiest around 3500-4000 rpms and will go to redline on the stock tach (5500) without a problem and seems to be ready to go higher.

i need to get licensing done so i can do a long drive and push it to get the rings seated.

i am running dual carbs as supplied by jake for the engine. i have an older header (design prior to chris foley getting the dies and making his upgrades) and dynaflow muffler.

the only thing i noted on the way home, and again today, is a backfire on decel. there is no backfire if i rev the engine while at rest and let off the accelerator. i don't want to mess with anything until i have some more miles on the motor and rings are set.

though only a few miles in to the motor, i am very happy. i am certain the backfire issue can be resolved (suggestions welcome) and i look forward to a great summer of driving. many thanks to mark and jake for putting the $5k package together and to chris and ed at CFR for wrenching when i didn't have the time to do so.

i will update as i get more seat time and the backfire issue resolved..... just wanted to say thanks to those who helped along the way.

backfire out the tailpipe, or through the carbs?

Could just be a leaking header/exhaust.

Rich

Posted by: scottb May 22 2008, 07:22 PM

backfire through the exhaust.... seems to me like a leak in the exhaust but i am not the sharpest tool as mechanics go.....

Congrats! Mark builds those motors in a tiny little room... It is pretty funny seeing a great big guy in a tiny little clean room but even funnier when WE built my motor in that room!!! Enjoy... You might try asking the decel pop question on Jake's site in the engine kit owners forum. Ask him for access...

Posted by: brer May 22 2008, 07:55 PM

adjust your valves again and pray.... somtime engines pop on decel.

As a result of true design :-)

Decel pop is usually an exhaust leak picking up air under decel and then exploding in the muffler, or an intake leak, or the engine is lean, or it's over advanced, or the carbs are slightly out of synch :-)

The old header design (pre CFR) had slip joints that DO leak...I had one...

Get some clamps.

gee jake, thanks for narrowing that down for me!!! biggrin.gif

there was a backfire on the old motor when i had the header on so i will work there first. a few industrial sized tubes of high temp gasket sealer and some duct tape and i should be all set right?!

cheers,

scott

A little high temp RTV at the flanges and crossovers should be sufficient. smile.gif

I only drove the car a mile or two but was quite pleased with the throttle response. An excellent combo for a DD and a big step up from a stock 2.0L.

ok here is a pic sent to me by ed before the engine was installed. FYI, the car in the background is not mine.

Attached Image

look in the vendors section under the crankcase breather cans for more pics.... that is my motor in full make up!

OK, a short update.

car is still not licensed but i took it for a short (20 minute) run for gas and friday afternoon provisions ( beer3.gif )

prior to departure i took the header off except for the stub pipes and sealed everything up with high temp RTV then cinched stuff back up. once i started out, i could really hear the difference in the exhaust note... no more leaks!!!!

then i warmed things up and kept varying between 3k and about 6k. the backfire steadily decreased and after i acquired my $4/gal gas and headed home, the backfire was nearly gone on decel and the idle had really flattened out. i think i may be near having the rings set!!!

again, this thing is a riot. to echo chris's comments, this is a great DD motor and a big step up from the stock 2.0L. only a total of about 50 miles on the motor so far but i remain very happy.

cheers,

scott

OK, been driving rather than doing updates.....

have about 1k on the new motor. has been a blast. no issues at all. still chasing the exhaust leak but that is not engine related. engine is highly recommended.

still amazes with the power band. have pulled to past 6k rpm without hesitation. cruises at just over 3k rpm at about 80 mph in 5th. and though i don't yet have a head temp sensor, the stock temp gauge never reaches mid-point even in city traffic on nearly 90F days...

i never feel like i am going to be left stranded which is a nice feeling....

so go buy one.... you won't be disappointed.

also added a jwest shift linkage along with the new motor. had a small issue with some mechanical interference in the rear console that james helped out with and now i am all set. a great update and another highly recommended product.

cheers,

scott

hey rich,

it is the $5k motor package that mcmark/jake put together. it's in the vendor area. displacement is 2056 and is a BIG step up from the stock 2.0 i had in my '73 prior (IMHO). chris at CFR drove it when the car was in with him and he also indicated it was a nice improvement over stock. i chose the carb option for my motor and as indicated, i am quite pleased.

cheers,

scott

I know McMark offers the 5k 2056.
A Big step up from a 2.0 liter. hmmmm
I thought maybe McMark was now building 2270 motors for 5k...that would be interesting.

Rich

welp... i stand by my statement that the engine is a big improvement over the stock 2.0L. but don't take my word for it, ask chris foley. he has driven the car...

cheers,

scott

Yes, a BIG step up from a stock 2.0L ...

Obviously not in displacement, but rather in power, torque and the grin factor. Going from ~90 HP to ~125 HP is a big step up in our little cars.

That's about 40% more power!
piratenanner.gif Andy

By the numbers a 2056 doesn't seem like a large increase. But like most things, the numbers don't tell the whole story. The combo that Jake has put together is a real, and noticeable improvement, as Scott has mentioned.

Posted by: scottb Aug 17 2008, 01:18 PM

exhaust leak is fixed!!!! aktion035.gif

now i don't sound like a pack of firecrackers as i get to a stop light......

so with a smooth exhaust note and a fresh exterior wash and interior vacuum, i think i added about 10-14HP. if i had cleaned the windows, who knows what the dyno would say!!!!

regardless, you want a great motor, get this one. i will check in on occassion as the miles add up. but being in new england, it will be about 40 degrees below zero in about a month so i may be somewhat delayed....

cheers and thanks again to everyone who has made this engine/trans work out so well.

mike,

trans is doing great! also, i still have the windshield molding we had talked about before your little 'incident'. if you still want it for the new car that is with scotty b, let me know and i will get it to him or you. i am seeing if i can squeeze the time to get to the ECC so maybe i can just deliver it.

cheers,

scott

Replacing the loose roll pin and worn ball lever helped I'm sure.
How about the limited fore-aft travel with the JWest linkage upgrade? Did you do the extra clearancing needed to help select 2nd/4th?
We are about to work on another box with excess play in the forks and try to tighten up the slop by improving internal clearances.

was a quick fix once i got info from james/ed.... needed to remove a bit more material due to interference with the front of the new console on the trans. had no problem with 2nd/4th but was having issues engaging 3rd.

and yes, the roll pin and worn ball lever replace helped as well!

scott

Zombie thread......
Just wondering after driving the car for 2 years with the new 2056, how's it been treating you?

Have you gotten used to the power yet, or is it still a nice surprise?

FYI, I'm responding to this old one since I see there has been a lot of talk about 2056 rebuilds recently and this is one of the few full reviews.

Posted by: JmuRiz Jun 23 2011, 11:20 AM

10-month bump:D

For some reason...even though I have a 2.7 911 engine, carbs, oil tank, headers, muffler, sheetmetal...I'm still intrigued by this WAY easier upgrade option.

Scottb, how's the car running/feeling.
