The temperature sensor on my 1975 1.8L is snapped off with the end still in the head. It doesn't affect fuel injection operation since the PO installed carbs. I'm putting the FI back on my engine. There a new temperature sensor in the "big box of parts" that came with the car when I bought it.
Part number = 280 130 012
Auto Atlanta catalog says this has been replaced by 311 906 041A which is for early '74.
AA also has 022 906 041A which is for '75 to '76.
Pelican Parts says:
311-906-041-A-M14 Cylinder Head Temp Sensor, 914, All Except 1973 2.0 (1970-76)
022-906-041-A-OEM Cylinder Head Temp Sensor, 914 2.0 (1973)
Then I got confused by: http://www.ratwell.com/technical/TempSensorII.html (I'll have to read through that more thoroughly.)
Has anyone else gone through the exercise of figuring out which is the right part for particular year/engine size/L-jet/D-jet? Please shed some light.

"280 130 012" is a truncated Bosch number. It should read "0 280 130 012".
The correct VW number for your car is "311 906 041A", which is "0 280 130 003".
