914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Calling all german experts!

Posted by: hcdmueller Jun 9 2008, 04:41 PM

I am picked up a MIG welder a few months ago and I need to get some supplies for it. Tank, wire, and other stuff.

The problem is my lack of German knowledge. All of my german friends are not car guys and don't understand what it is that I need to buy so they can't tell me where to look.

Anyone out there know the right words to look for so I can find a welding supply store over here?

For any person like me who thinks this should be easy enough here is the word for MIG welder in German

schutzgasschweißgerät

It took me a while to figure that one out.

Of course negative comments and sarcasm are appreciated.

My wife is from Germany and actually once welded new mufflers on her
car so she can probably supply the right words.

German is so literal and descriptive it seems really odd to me. Instead of
"esophagus", they call it the bratwurst-and-beer-going-down-to-stomach-tube.

Actually, I made that up but I bet it is not far off.

I know exactly what you are talking about. my wife speaks pretty good german and she still can't help me with it. The words are just too specific for the items I need.

FourBlades,
Your wife sounds pretty cool. I need to teach my wife to weld. I think she would do better than me. She is more patient.

Schweißung is Weld
MIG (Metal Inert Gas) would be Metaledelgas

I would suggest that you go to the local TUV station.
You may not be able to buy the needed materials without a license in Germany...so you may need to buy them online...might be faster.

If you do need to buy them online, use Ebay (UK) to find a vendor.

The other place that may work for you is the motorpool guys based in Germany...they will have the supplies and you may be able to buy them tax free from the boys.

Yeah, I lucked out for sure. She went to a drivers ed with me at Sebring
last weekend (her second) and had a blast. Half the guys there told me
they wished their wives wanted to get on track.

She is doing rounds at work so I could not reach her. She used to have a mig welder in Germany so I will find out from her when she gets off work what you should look for.

OK, my wife bought the gas (schutzgas) from a company called Linde
because she wanted a big cylinder of it.

The wire (schweissdraht) you might get at a KFZ / zuberhoer (auto parts store).

She also said to go to a local garage and ask them where they get their supplies.

She always said her company name was the name of the street she lived on
when they asked, and they never gave her any trouble.

No Eric, not that kind of rounds. The emergency vet kind of rounds. Really
saves money on caring for the 4 legged family members. She is pretty
good at caring for the other kind of family members too. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
