Well the smashed front end look works for me.

Chris didn't seem to think so. So he is repairing it. smile.gif

First rule of the road, Use you own brakes not the cars in front of you.

Been there done that. Normally expensive.

Let see it when the body is done.

What happened Turboman? Is that being repaired by Chris at Tangerine Racing?

Yeah Chris is fixing it. Lord knows I can't fix it.

The repair looks good so far.

Chris, do you have any pictures of a front corner repair that includes the inner fender. I've got to replace my passenger side corner and want to see how the experts do it.

This is the closest thing I have. I just welded this piece on my race car a couple weeks ago.

Thanks that helps. I've got to patch up my front corner and was wondering where to cut. Mine needs a similar repair. I might have to bring it to the door pillar. The door is tight when I close it.

I suggest completely removing the fender by drilling out the spot welds.
Then you can repair the inner fender/floor/front panel. While the fender is off, do whatever metal repairs are needed to it. Then reattach and paint.

Posted by: jmill Jun 11 2008, 09:25 AM

Will do. thanks for the advice. The only concern I have is getting the front suspension points lined up right. I'll have to fab up a jig so everything lines up square. The forward mount for the front control arm is tweaked up about an inch and a half. It looks like Turboman's damage didn't affect the suspension geometry.

Posted by: r_towle Jun 11 2008, 09:30 AM

It does not look like the front strut tower was moved...

I would suggest that you replace only what is needed. That is alot easier to line up thing.

If the whole fender was pushed, take it off. The rear of the fender is attached to the same piece of sheet metal that the hinges are attached to...could be the issue.

I'm hoping it's just preloaded and when I straighten it out the door will fit nice. All the door lines seem to match up real well. It just seems that the door is an 1/8 too big. I can hear some metal to metal contact in the door lock area when I close it. The door requires a bit more force to close because of this. Is there a way to adjust the door locks that I'm not seeing?

It doesn't need much. Just a tad to stop it from hanging up in the door lock.

We bolted my jig up to Turboman's car today. It looks like the mount is still in the proper location.

When the 4 screws that hold the strike plate to the door jamb are loosened, the plate should move around a little bit. It may be corroded in place though. IIRC the part on the door is not adjustable.

Thanks for doing what I imagine in my mind. biggrin.gif

The repairs look great. Thanks for posting pictures of the progress and your jig. It's good to see how to do it the right way. I don't wish this kind of damage on anyone, but it did come at a good time for me to see (sorry Turboman). I like your jig but I'll have to make one with more reference points. The damage I have is a bit more extensive. I'm sure when I dive into it I'll have a bunch of questions.

I made the jig from a straight car, years ago. If the other side isn't damaged it aligns very nicely. The only other thing I do is measure the fore-aft position of the mount by running a tape measure back to the crossbar pickup on the chassis.

Before I permanently delete the wing option I think I'll mount it one more time at a low downforce angle and see if I can come up with an end plate shape that works. The curvature of the wing is similar to the curve at the edge of the decklid.

Well Chris I am curious what you come up with. smile.gif

I didn't turn it around, just angled it back. The end plates make it look backwards, since they look better with the wing tilted that way. Its like the mfr didn't realize which way the airflow is supposed go across a wing.

I know its been a while, but we are making significant progress this week.

Here are some quick pics.
Stainless bumper bracket:
Attached Image

both fenders are tacked on, should be fully welded later this week:
Attached Image

The rear flare mod/repair is going well, patches on both sides should be fully tacked this week. The flares were formed very poorly by the last bodyworker. In some places the welds were cracked under the bondo, even before we started stretching the metal. Instead of trying to form the patch in one piece we opted for 3 pieces for ease of forming. They will be TIG welded in place:
Attached Image

Posted by: turboman808 Oct 1 2008, 07:47 PM

Looks good. Really want to go for a drive... smile.gif

I did have this dream lately of British racing green. Hmmm...

Posted by: Racer Chris Oct 2 2008, 06:10 PM

More progress today.
The thickness of filler on the old flares approaches 3/16" over wide areas. sad.gif
Had I know this in advance I may have just cut them completely off at the start. unsure.gif

Attached Image

The left side is fully welded. The welds will be ground down, hammered, and sanded smooth. After that, some hammer and dolly work combined with careful shrinking of high spots will produce a uniform surface. Except for a few low spots that we can't reach from behind with our tools, the filler requirement will be down to 1/16" or less. smile.gif

There are a few ways to solve this problem I have seen. The problem is I don't really see it as much of a problem. Unless I plan to take some back country road at 80 mph at 3am there is never gonna be a instance where I was really wishing I had more light.

On the BMW HID lights I was looking at the flap that gives you that cut off line flips up to give you the brights. So it's possible to do something like that.

They also make HID H4 bulbs like you mentioned which would just be a matter of taking the existing bulb and cutting it to fit.

Either one would be nice to do but not a serious matter. It would be cool if someone made a kit to do this. I imagine sine you would have to delete the stock lights it wouldn't be a very popular kit to make.

Here's what the right rear looks like with a tire. There's a little more shape adjustment to do and the rears are done. You have about another inch available to the outside for even more tire now.

Update:

We had some time this week to start forming the front flares and clean up the rear flares a bit more. Also made a couple of wing endplate samples.

This is the best pic I took of the front flares in progress. Unfotunately it doesn't do them justice. They are much more subtle than the rears but have a similar character.

Nathan,

Dude I am from NJ. Exit 14A. Born in Plainfield, went to school in Edison, and my parents still live in N. Plainfield so I can make fun of NJ and that wing is SOOOOOOO NJ! Get the right wing. The rest of the car looks great. I also like the stock fenders.

I think thats where it is staying, unless Nathan decides to go without it.

Posted by: turboman808 Jan 6 2009, 07:48 PM

As always love your work Chris.

I think the wing is gonna be very controversial for as long as it's on there. LOL
I had thought about having you guys raise it up but that looks pretty good the way it follows the trunk line.

I do like the parallelogram better. Can it be trimmed and inch or 2 on top? Make it more rectangular then square. Think that would make it fit the car very well. Leave the wing as clear carbon and paint the winglets to match the car.

Oh keep in mind I don't plan on driving is on crappy NYC roads anymore. Gonna try and baby it more so you can lower the car a bit more I think then it was. I am guessing you either raised it up to work the fenders better or it's just looking really high to me.

No pictures with the front mounted yet. Then I would really get an idea of the final result!!!

piratenanner.gif

Ray I doubt I would drive my car to Hershey. I want to keep the car out of the rain and it always rains at Hershey.

I am really pissed about the economy right now. Some CCWs would have really made the car look right. mad.gif

I live in NJ I am not from NJ. Odd that I swore I would never live in NJ and here I am. WTF.gif

I'm sure you're right about that. I kind of like it now. I took a nice pic of the car outside last week In the daylight I thought it looked real good. I'll try to post the pic tomorrow, and try some alterations to the endplates as you suggested.

The front lid still isn't finished and I have to smooth out the right fender flare. I'm almost satisfied with the rear flares but some of the old flare welds have cracked as I worked on the shape. What a botched job that was. smash.gif The car lost 10 lbs just from removing bondo. A layer of jb weld was under the filler, holding the metal together. headbang.gif To call the work amateur would be an insult to most non-professionals. chair.gif
I've done a lot of dollying, hammering, shrinking and stretching to the rear flares in order to even up the shape and not one inch of Genaro's welds has cracked.

We made a pair of wing endplates from aluminum, with the first parallelogram shape. Nothing else looked any good imo.

We need to mount the turn signals. Previously you had separate running lights and turn signal lights mounted in the fog light area kind of like this:

The motorcycle lights you provided can be mounted here, but nowhere else looks suitable:

I was wanting to have them inside the turnsignals below the lights. I picked those because in the bottom of the turnsignal there was a flat spot that looked easy to drill and mount on. Who cares if anyone can see them. smile.gif

Fenders look great. Wing looks good from the angle I can see.

Are those 10 inch x 17's on the rear? and are the headlights you have legally not too bright and what brand are they? Looks good, for me it's really hard not to get filler 3/16 in spots on that much fabrication in the bottom of the curves and the arc of the fender on the rear, once the guidecoating starts. I'm curious as to how they look under the bottom and do people ever lok there? I'm a under the bottom type of guy.

Posted by: Racer Chris Jan 22 2009, 04:34 PM

We worked on the turn signals some more today.
First we tried your idea:
Attached Image

The turn signal interferes with the headlight a bit, but more importantly:
Attached Image

It looked like some magic smoke started coming out of the new assembly so we shut off the headlight and found that the heat of the headlight melted the plastic turnsignal cover; guess its not really carbon fiber, lol.

So we did the right thing and mounted the running light/turn signal (without the plastic cover) inside the bottom of the light bucket:
Attached Image

Attached Image

Attached Image

Now we have to figure out why the magic smoke is coming out of the light switch on the dash. headbang.gif

Rich

Posted by: ejm Jan 22 2009, 09:15 PM

The headlight bulbs are 55 watts so they draw about 4.5 amps, well within the design limits of the stock wiring and switch. The smoke is coming from the dimmer rheostat so it's unrelated to exterior lighting. Somewhere there's a instrument lighting wire that wasn't insulated properly after one of the mods this car has seen in the past.

Well the wiring under the dash isn't the most inspiring thing I have scene. Looked a bit tangled up to me. I did very gently put in a Engman fuse panel thru the wiring.

I do plan on bringing the car back maybe sometime this summer for a day or 2 with fresh gauges. Get rid of that ash tray mounted gauge and put in a triple gauge and fresh tach and speedo.

Ray is supposed to be hooking me up with a early 914 backpad and seat, for which I will be forever grateful(I didn't think those were possible to get). Just add a lemans seat and leather covered dash and the whole car will be looking good.

Just why do the wheels I want got to be so expensive. I will roll on what I have for year I guess. dry.gif

I would like to say we have started re-assembly of the trim etc., but first things first...

The transmission got stuck in two gears at once while the car has been here. I might have ignored it if this only happened once - but not twice. There is something definitely wrong.

So today Ed pulled the 916 trans apart, and it wasn't too hard to find the fault.
Attached Image

This little "bullet" is an interlock to prevent two gears from being selected simultaneously on the 3-4 and 5-R shift forks. It wasn't "there" when the box was opened up.
Attached Image

Ed found it ... here:
Attached Image

The thru hole is the bore for the 3-4 shift rod. The "bullet" belongs between the 3-4 and 5-R rods down here:
Attached Image

That's it. Problem solved! Everything else looks good inside, so its already going back together as I post this.

Just glad I can run the car for the rest of the summer. driving.gif

This is a different 915 box - essentially the same thing.
The arrow points to the 3-4 shift rod; it is in the hole shown in the previous pictures.
The "bullet" interlock piece is supposed to go below the shift rod, but we found it above the shift rod.

Posted by: Racer Chris Jul 16 2009, 03:37 PM

Since that interlock prevents 3rd and 5th from being engaged at the same time, with it out of place the potential for disaster was definitely there.

Oh as far as that goes it's not 100% legal but I think I know some ways to resolve that. 2 that I can think of.

One is cut out the housing so it takes a H4 bulb. Lot's of HID kits with hi/low that produce less heat then what is there now so that might be the best route down the road. This would be pretty dam slick if it worked.

IPB Image
or this one that moves forwards and back to make the high beam
IPB Image

2nd would be just drilling for another H3 bulb into the headlight bucket. Doesn't really need to be aimed, just kinda there to fill in where the cutoff it. Probably not the best way to go.

Posted by: Chris Hamilton Jul 17 2009, 11:37 AM

You could do like my HIDs, just make sure you use a high quality kit or you won't have proper cutoffs and you'll blind other drivers. My headlights are aimed to give me good coverage but they don't look any brighter than normal ones coming down the road.

IPB Image

Posted by: Rand Jul 17 2009, 11:38 AM

How about lenses? I remember Tony was having some glass ones made when Neo was doing the headlight in signal bucket thing. I never heard the final results.

Do you have a hi and low beam?

I know Neo914 did this with the hella micro DE HID kit. He doesn't have hi beams thoufh. I just got the regular Micro DE because I knew at some point I wanted to make something that had a hi and low beam.

I would get another pair of Micro DE lights and some h4 bulbs and try and figure out how they can fit together. confused24.gif

Posted by: Chris Hamilton Jul 17 2009, 12:13 PM

Those are the Micro DE HID. Just low beams, but I don't drive at night that much anyways, and where I do, I don't get to use high beams.

These things are brighter than my H4 replacements in the stock doors that I used to use, and they produce less glare to drive past. It's a great combo. I just need to get some clear lenses to put on there and a full coverage hood from sheridan.

I also had to use dual 3W yellow LEDs below each one for enough brightness on the turn signals.

So pretty much the same thing just you have the HID kit. I wanted to at least attempt to get a H4 hid bulb in a Micro DE case down the road. I just don't know how well those moving bulbs are going to create the cut off.

The micro DE does have a built in cutoff. It is probably possible to position the moving HID buld so that in the normal position it would use the bulbs own cuttoff and then move forward past the cuttoff to give the brights.

I am less then impressed with pretty much every HID kit I have seen to be honest. But the DE cases I can get for around $120 and a kit fo around $175. If I can get it to work that would be great. If not then I won't have wasted $600.

Thankfully Chris did all the hard stuff. smile.gif

I think what Chris did was pretty slick. If I remember he wasn't completely happy with it being just flat but if someone ever comes along with a nice rounded cover that would look great. I got acrylic sheets to cover it with.

Right! I am debating if I will ever re-attach my rear valence, and need to paint those nubs.
What was the rear valence discussion like? Pros and Cons?
It seems to me that it catches air out the back, instead of letting it pass, and covers cool lookin transaxle stuff, which I like to see.
Looks awesome, a great modern interpretation of the classic 914 GT beerchug.gif
