914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Spark Plug Inserts

Posted by: JJ914 Jun 16 2008, 09:40 PM

I need to put a Timecert in one of my heads. Got one in the mail today from AA, but it didnt come with the tools like I had hoped. So could someone let me know what size drill and taps I need to install this thing correctly

Sounds like you just bought the inserts. You need the kit with the tools also. Check timesert's site.

I check on the kit it looks like it about $130, does anyone have one I could borrow to get the job done???

Take it to a local machineist. It cost me $20 (including the cert) to have my spark plug fixed.

Way better then spending $130 plus shipping for the tool, for a one off job.

I don't have the spark plug sized kit. I have the 8mm kit. But if I ever needed an insert for a plug, I'd buy it. That way the next time it happens I would have the tools and the inserts and fix it right away and be back on the road without pulling a head. Something to think about.

Merely being realistic. smile.gif I'm still in the process of restoring my 4th 914 and driving my 6th. 91 today on the way home with the top off. Comfy at 70mph...

These days when I need a tool, I buy it. Much better than the old days when I couldn't afford to fix something with a decent tool.

Installing Time Serts in 914 heads while they're installed on the engine is a no-no. Because of the design of both the tap and the installation tool, you're gonna foul the valves and/or seats, especially on the 1.7/1.8/2.0(bus) heads. Not good, as we say.
Along with the tap, you'll need the installer and the seat cutter.
