Posted by: Brad Roberts Jan 25 2004, 12:50 PM

Um.. I buy that exact header from George in Nevada. Are you sure that is a Triad Tony ?? or is Dave reselling it ??

B

Posted by: ChrisReale Jan 25 2004, 01:06 PM

I have a feeling Dave is re-selling it. That is exactly what my header looks like and I bought it from George. It is a great system.

Posted by: Porsche Rescue Jan 25 2004, 01:12 PM

When I picked up my muffler from Dave last spring he showed me the jigs and beginning of a prototype header system that he was planning to produce.

Posted by: Matt Romanowski Jan 25 2004, 03:18 PM

It's the same system that GPR sells. They've had it on their website for over 2 years.

Beautiful,,, just beautiful

Posted by: microsa Jan 25 2004, 03:25 PM

I bought them from Eruopean Racing almost 3 years ago. I never got around to using them and sold them to Tony. Boy, they really came out NICE!!
Gonna send the guy a set of headers for my 325is next month.

That's sick... Does George make 6 headers? If so, anyone know the coinage?

Posted by: Qarl Jan 25 2004, 05:19 PM

Yes... George Makes six headers... I think around $500

I had mine bling-blinged as well..

Tangerine makes it look like a toy.... It does look good though...

Posted by: Triaddave Jan 25 2004, 06:02 PM

i agree the header looks great--nice finish. the 4-cylinder headers look exactly like the ones i build. i build them, i don't drop-ship them. the headers look exactly like the ones triad has been building for 11 years. the 914-6 headers do not look anything like the one pictured here. i weld my flanges on the inside, also have a stamped number in the flange of the collector, as well as the stub pipes from the head.

If there is one thing I love about my stinking POS car, it's the Triad.

How come more exhaust manufacturers don't stamp their name on the piece? No pride?

How well does the slip on collector seal? Are there exhaust leaks and noise? I think even the Tangerine has a couple of slip joints.

Mike

Posted by: cha914 Jan 26 2004, 09:36 AM

Yeah, I bought these second hand from Mike in SA a few months back...and I am calling them a triad because that is what they looked like from another header thread a while back...I have also heard them called the European Racing header, which I guess is where Mike got them from.

I don't know the exact brand of the muffler, but I think its just a standard turbo muffler, it was probably over kill to have that coated also, but why not...will definately look better than my grungy one on there now.

I hope to step up to a Tangerine one day, but Mike gave me a deal I couldn't refuse on this one...

Glad you guys like the pics...that new digi cam sure is nice tongue.gif

Is the inside of the pipes coated as well?
So what did it cost to get everything done?
I'm curious because I just got a quote back from Jet Hot
and Arlington is just a short drive away for me.

Yes! Beautful Pictures! wub.gif
How much did theses set you back?
I've a set(I think they're Kerry & Hunter)
and am thinking of getting 'em coated.
Cha914,what kind of camera? I'm shopping for one.

Posted by: cha914 Mar 28 2004, 11:01 AM

Bill and Majkos,

Yes the pipes are coated inside and out, and the quality is very good...a v8 buddy of mine had some of his headers done also and the coating held up even though he had to dent the headers pretty bad to clear a few things in his engine bay.

I think this type of header usually runs in the 500dollar range, but I got mine in trade for about half that. It cost me about 250 to have everything coated, and shipped to my door. But you could do it for less if you didn't do the muffler and all the little pieces...I think for just the header system it would have been around 180 or so...

So far I really like the system, and it has made me realize how many leaks my old system had. The engine no longer pops on decel and I think I have a little more low end torque.

Oh and my camera is an Canon S400 and I love it...

aktion035.gif Oh Yeah!

Posted by: Brad Roberts Mar 28 2004, 12:44 PM

The header complete with muffler sells for 600$. Mike Tomlin is a great guy with VERY high standards when it comes to coatings. He also does engine coatings and the such. If you stop by, have him turn on the vibratory polisher... it will shake your fillings out. My shop was in the same complex. Mike asked me one day what business would be good to get into.. I told him coatings back in 1996 or so. He spent a full year going over every available option and coating suppliers. He even hooked up with a chemistry professor from UTA to have all the coatings analyzed so he knew exactly what he was buying.

Oh.. if anyone does stop in..please say hello to Jeb also for me. I kinda miss my old "hangin out" buddies. Many a late nights spent working on each others cars and 100's of weekends spent at the local 1/8 mile track (Kennedale)

Can someone list all the -4 header builders:

1. Racer Chris's Tangerine

2. Triad- Dave

3. Kerry Hunter

4. European Racing

I'm lost. wacko.gif

The only one missing is Dave Finch, but I dont think he builds them anymore.

I was looking at prices for these headers, and there is a huge difference between the 3 that I could find.

Tangerine's headers are like 1300 with a muffler, Triad's are about 1000 with muffler, and Kerry Hunter's are around 350 without a muffler???

Why the huge price gap?

And Ive heard you loose the heater when you switch to headers. Is that right with all these options?

Posted by: seanery Mar 29 2004, 04:52 PM

Tangerine has a heat exchanger option.
As far as price goes, I think the Kerry Hunter is mild steel, Tangerine is Stainless. Not sure on the other.

Posted by: MattR Mar 29 2004, 05:00 PM

I live in so. cal, and a heater probably isnt very important at all. I am considering taking it off to free up weight and maybe HP (and also save money). What can I remove from the engine to eliminate the heater? Will removing the heater option affect the oil cooler? I have my engine apart so I am pretty flexible now.

The amount of labor to fabricate each system is directly reflected in the price.

Kerry Hunter Headers have no stub pipes, which makes installation a bit tougher. They also have the smallest diameter tubes.

The Triad/ERH header has simple/cheap stub pipes that don't enhance the port flow much and are a bit difficult to fit IMO.

The Tangerine Header design is by far the most complex, requiring a lot of welding, but it achieves higher power output, substantially better ground clearance, and better sound. Just to name a few features. Since it is already the most expensive I am trying to make it the best in all other categories.
I will be testing generic (less expensive) mufflers soon to find a lower cost alternative without losing the power advantage, and still keep the sound levels reasonable.

I have no direct experience with the Finch design, but I know he was one of the top guys in E-Prod SCCA National racing some years back.

Sean, my stub pipes are stainless, but the header is mild steel. All stainless would make the system price totally prohibitive for all but the wealthiest of 914 owners.

If you don't need heat you can save some weight by removing the blower motor and all the ductwork under the engine, along with the heat exchangers. With the right header you will also pick up some power at the same time, since the H/E's are a bit restrictive.
There is no effect on the oil cooler by removing the heating system.

Posted by: MattR Mar 30 2004, 01:00 AM

Chris,

I think I'll just save up for your headers. No sense in wasting time and money in an inferior product. Is it a pain to install headers with the engine in the car? And how much db change is expected?

Chris,

Headers are easier to install than the heat exchangers. Once a set of stub pipes is correctly installed they rarely if ever have to be removed, and the header attachment is below the pushrod tubes so access to the bolts is good.
In my experience, the only quiet exhaust is with the OEM muffler. All the aftermarket single muffler systems are kind of loud, with many being somewhat irritating for daily use. Most cars on the road today have at least 2 mufflers, or a "resonator" and a muffler. I could give db numbers for my systems from race track use, but I currently don't have numbers for any other products to compare them to.
I use my wife's ears to decide how loud a system is. laugh.gif

Posted by: majkos Mar 30 2004, 08:09 AM

So ,Racer Chris. huh.gif You're saying a header system w/o stubbies is a Kerry hunter,with stubbies it's a Triad? smile.gif If that's the case,my car is is upgraded with Triad's! clap56.gif Kool!

Posted by: MattR Mar 30 2004, 01:17 PM

I dont really care about the noise level, I just dont want to get pulled over...
But in my city, there are so many fart can hondas that I could probably get away with a pretty loud exhaust.

You could also have European Racing Headers...the same ones that are shown at the begining of this thread.

I've got the European Racing headers as well, I'd love to have a set from Tangerine...maybe one of these days when the budget allows it smile.gif

Tony,
Looks like you beat the spring/summer rush.
The pricing from Performance Coatings in Arlington
has gone up a bit now.
-----
The header/stub pipe/muffler assembly is $260 for black or polished. The stinger/bracket is going to cost about 17.50/ft + $10.00(for bracket) in either black or polished. The tailpipe is $15.00/ft in either black or polished. With the cermet basecoat under a black or polished topcoat, you can figure another 50% on top of the single coating price. At this time, turnaround is about two to three weeks.
-----
And this is with no shipping since I'm local.
Still not as much as jethot though.
