914World.com _ 914World Garage _ GT Flare group buy (is closed)

Posted by: jmill Jun 20 2008, 11:39 AM

I'd like to put on GT flares. I would prefer steel but haven't found any. Does anyone know where I can pick up some steel flares or high quality fiberglass ones?

I want the same deal you got on your flares!!!

Looks like AA is the place to go. Great selection of parts. I just downloaded the catalog. They are awful proud of their stuff considering their prices. The catalog shows the flares about $100 lower than the link you posted.

I remember George saying that he had to raise the price because the price of steel went up.

In the past, George has done group buys on the flares and given a good price break. Maybe it's time to ask him about another group buy?

Posted by: carr914 Jun 20 2008, 04:40 PM

Here is a picture of AA flares. I think the price went up due to steel prices and manufactoring costs.

Jeez, George is going to think that I'm a shill for his company laugh.gif

Posted by: Zaney Jun 21 2008, 12:23 PM

The Price is Right! I'll jump on the wagon this go around for some flares.

No... Everyone that wants in, PM me your contact info (name, address and a phone number just in case). When we have 10, I'll start asking for each of you to send me a check. When I have them all, I will write one check to AA and give them the shipping info for everyone.

So far it looks like:

jmill
pavpav12
Carlitos Way
Zaney
tango-52
hot shoe914
JRust
bob
Todd Enlund

Possible:

bandjoey
AZ914
i love porsche

That's 9 in and 3 maybes already... but I'll start another list when I get your PM info.

Do you have PayPal? I'd rather do that then trust the mail. I can add a couple of bucks to cover the charges.

I actually may need to wait for that. Mine is due late July. How soon is this going to happen. If this is like a this week thing I can't do it yet. I guess let me know how soon this is going to fly?

Posted by: i love porsche Jun 22 2008, 07:47 PM

yeah...if this happens in like 2-3 weeks i should be ok, im still waiting on the first check from my new job

Posted by: jmill Jun 22 2008, 08:12 PM

Paypal takes visa. Not to mention you don't have to wait for a check to clear. I don't know what the $ received limit is on a basic account. You might want to check out an upgrade. It could save you some headaches and get a few more people to pitch in.

Posted by: defianty Jun 23 2008, 08:21 AM

I'm very interested but I'm in the UK so would need to know shipping costs beforehand. Thanks, Stephen

Posted by: jmill Jun 23 2008, 11:19 AM

Looks like we have ten. piratenanner.gif Let me know when you'd like us to ante up.

Posted by: RJMII Jun 23 2008, 11:42 AM

I have an idea... if one of the guys on the list has an advanced paypal account (whatever it is called), and one of the guys that wants to pay with visa will pitch in for paypal fees, and the two trust each other... the person with the paypal account could write the check for twice as much after receiving payment from their trusted friend.

just an idea. Bill's good for it, I've done business with him a couple of times. (bandjoey). (and they were pricey transactions, too)
I'd vouch for Jamie, too.

Posted by: mpgguy Jun 23 2008, 11:54 AM

Someone referred me here from my inquiry on a different site. I am in as well, Todd you will have a PM incoming shortly.

Posted by: HillKing Jun 23 2008, 02:19 PM

Todd, I just PMed you. I have been waiting as Mark decided not to organize this time. I just need to know who to pay and how.

Posted by: Todd Enlund Jun 23 2008, 02:58 PM

As of right now, I have commitments and shipping info from:

1 Todd Enlund
2 jmill
3 hot shoe914
4 pavpav12
5 Zaney
6 Strawman
7 tango-52
8 mpgguy
9 BKLA
10 HillKing

I have two more that have said they are in, but I need shipping info. I also have five that are on the fence depending on funds. If you want in, and you aren't on the list above, PM me.

Someone buy Jamie's parts car so he can get some flares! biggrin.gif

This one might go quick...

If it makes anyone feel better about using me as an escrow service, I think that Jon Bovey (Phoenix 914-6GT) would vouch for me... blink.gif

Posted by: hot_shoe914 Jun 23 2008, 06:14 PM

Okay you need to put me in for two sets of flares please. Also if someone wants to visa my paypal and cover the fees I will ante up the cash for them if that will help them get their flares. Seems like we might end up with a lot more than 10 so maybe a renegotiation with George might get us a better price yet still. Use your wisdom grasshopper and get us a better price.

Will do Donald... just so you know, I already asked George, and the flares have to be shipped as a set, so it will still be a separate $50 shipping for each set that you order. They have a specific packaging for the flares for shipping.

Based on what I have seen from George in the past, they are an in-stock item.

By August, he should have the GT Rockers done also.

From what I recall you need the valances too...

From looking at the photos it appears that you can get away with not replacing the rear valance and it still looking ok.

Posted by: Todd Enlund Jun 25 2008, 05:25 PM

Okay... I talked to George again about the rockers. He says they are almost done...

If everyone that is part of the buy from the lower 48 buys the rockers for $150, George will ship them for free. If only some buy them, shipping will be $25 additional.

With rockers, that would make your total $675+$50+150=$875 if everyone buys... if not, it would be $900 with rockers, $725 without.

As far as international fund transfers - it can be done by using Paypal. Paypal does the math and will let you specify what currency you want to use. Shipping rates will throw a wrench in the works.

We are working with George on the shipping, so that's not a big deal. Overseas shipping is high, but the dollar is crap, so it's still a good deal biggrin.gif

The big issue with PayPal is that I am limited in the amount of money I can accept via credit card, and I get hit with a 4.9% charge. I can accept bank funded payments with no fees or limits. I can't differentiate between these types of transactions until I get hit with the charges, so I cannot do PayPal.

I'm in for a set of flares and rockers. I would also be interested in a flared GT front airdam with oil cooler slot.

Posted by: Todd Enlund Jun 27 2008, 01:50 PM

I'm having an issue that is slowing me down a bit... I had to recover a hard drive error on my system disk, and now Vista tells me that "An unauthorized change was made to Windows" and only gives me limited access to the OS for short periods of time before it shuts down on me. I have to backdoor my way into the OS, greatly limiting my functionality. Of course, Microsoft "tech support" is a joke.

I'm still on track with this group buy, it just slows me down having to hack into my own computer.

I'll probably start asking for money early next week... if you're on the fence, start thinking hard idea.gif

GT Valance is available from AA, but must ship in it's own packaging for a separate charge.

Basically, the reason that we can get a deal on the flares is because George is the distributor/manufacturer, and he is selling them to me at wholesale, treating me as a retailer. Then he is drop shipping the flares to the people that I have "sold" them to. I am "selling" them at 0% margin. I'm apparently not a very smart businessman biggrin.gif

Most of the other products that AA sells, George pays wholesale from the distributor/manufacturer, and then has to mark them up to make any money on them.

I've had one person say "no" to the rockers, so unless someone else needs to buy an extra set, they will be $150+$25 shipping.

George has 53 sets of flares in stock... he has challenged me to sell ALL of them blink.gif

It looks like the thing to do is clamp, cut and butt weld. It appears that you have to massage the flares a little when you go to clamp and align them. Does anyone have experience with fitting the AA flares?

You'll have to contact George directly to get a shipping quote to the UK... I have been in contact with another chap called "defianty" who was working to get a group shipment to the UK, he told me that he had contacted you as well.

Sorry for the delay... My Western Digital Raptor died a slow and agonizing death... I had to buy a new hard drive, and reinstall my OS. Now running on a clean OS... gotta love it.

Anyhow, what I have right now:

1 Todd Enlund +
2 jmill +
3 hot shoe914 + (2 sets)
4 hot shoe914 +
5 pavpav12
6 Zaney +
7 Strawman +
8 tango-52 +
9 mpgguy -
10 BKLA
11 HillKing +
12 bob
13 knutg1
14 pillay2k
15 Nana's 914 +
16 Justinp71
17 914pwer
18 db9146 +
19 Lectronix +
20 rebelmdot +

A + signifies that you want rockers as well as flares. A - means you only want flares.

What I need:

pavpav12, BKLA, bob, knutg1, pillay2k, Justinp71, 914pwer - I need to know if you want flares only, or flares and rockers.

914pwer, db9146, Lectronix, rebelmdot - I need you to PM me full name, shipping address, and a phone #.

As soon as I have this info from everyone, I will begin to collect money.

defianty, bandjoey, Carlitos Way - you have expressed interest, but have not committed. If I do not hear otherwise, I will assume that you are not in on the buy.

New to the site. Is this still going on? What do I have to do to get on the list and what is the ETA for delivery? Just interested in the flares.
Thanks

I would like to know if this is still going on too?

Just kidding decided to spend my flare money on a whole car.lol. Hopefully another one of these happens in about a year when im ready again.

Rockers and flares please....

PM sent with info

Posted by: hot_shoe914 Jul 14 2008, 09:09 PM

Okay sadly this has taken so long that I am now out. I bought a new barefoot boat instead of the massive 4 engine that was going to cause me to need the flares. The other set is no longer needed either as he found a deal on fiberglass. Maybe this winter I can get a motor built and then go after flares. Thanks guys.

Sent him a PM, but no response?

Posted by: Todd Enlund Jul 18 2008, 11:12 AM

Okay, here's the deal.

This has gotten far too complicated with all the PMs asking for this and that, and trying to keep track of who wants what. The vast majority want flares and rockers. So this is what we are going to do. $875 for Flares and Rockers shipped CONUS. $1065 for Flares and Rockers shipped to UK or Sweden. I'm sorry to those who only wanted flares, or who wanted valences, but it got to be too much to keep track of.

I've still got a few people that have not sent me the info that I have asked for.

I'll send out PMs to everyone this afternoon for payment, and we'll get this rolling.

Unfortunately, I am on the road away from home, and we are too far along to add anyone else to this buy... there are several folks from the UK that are interested, and you might be able to work a deal directly with George at AA. I think that you'd need more than a couple people to get a big break on postage. You might contact Moggy and see if he wants to get in on a UK group buy. If he does, and hasn't sent the money yet, then all is good. If he has sent a check, then I can either destroy it or send it back to him if he wants to jump to another buy. I won't be home 'till the end of the week, so you have a few days to get somthing going... I can put all the UK guys in touch with each other when I return home.

If all else fails, hang around, and I'm sure that someone else will organize another group buy in about 6 months (seems to be the cycle).

Thanks Todd.
If I have read the postings correctly it looks like there are at least 4 of us (Me, Defianty, Moggy and Wayne) in UK who have unfortunately missed out on the current group buy. I have been in touch tentitively with the people at AutoAtlanta and they seem a friendly lot and are keen to sell me a set of flares but I may hang on till there is a number of us so we can perhaps gain some economy of scale(???).
I've not purchased from USA before and would prefer to be a follower rather than a leader on this but we'll see what happens.
If you can put all UK people in touch with each other at the end of the week, that would be much appreciated I'm sure.
Thanks again

Man, I hope so! I just got home from vacation, and I have to go to the post office to pick up my mail. I do have an issue with international exchange rates that I need to work out, but I think we are on track and getting close.

Posted by: db9146 Aug 12 2008, 10:45 PM

Have you had a chance to check the status on payments? Of the 22 PMs you sent out, how many have responded to either provide a check or bow out?

Just curious???? Anxious to get the goodies!!

I sent 22 PMs, and received 5 more for a total of 27... add myself for 28. I have received 13 payments, add myself for 14. I also had 7 "maybes" that declined before I requested funds, and a friend from off the board has decided that he wants a set.

I am currently working with the banks to clear up a couple of international payments and the corresponding exchange rates, then I will send the list and money to AA.

I will immediately more on this.

Whoever decides to organize the next one, PM me and I'll give you some advice from lessons learned...

I had a lot of difficulty with international exchange rates, which slowed things down...

That works for me. I appreciate all the work you've put into this. This deal has come a long way since that first post.

Just an FYI update for everyone.

I just called AA to inquire about picking up the flares and rockers tomorrow (9/6) since I'm in Atlanta. I was told that even though Todd mailed the check on 8/23 (a Saturday), that AA was not going to start shipping parts or allowing them to be picked up until 9/19 though they are "calling the bank everyday" to check the status of the check clearing since it was a personal check.

I understand the need for the check to clear but I thought carrier pigeons flew faster than that.

Partly my fault as well... I should have known better than to send a personal check for $13,541.00 and expect it to be taken on faith biggrin.gif

Fedex dropped the flares today. Apparently the fiberglass rockers are back ordered.

Of the two (one front one rear) flares I've heald up to the car, the fit is pretty bad. I've heard the re-pro ones are like that though, so no big surprise.

I suppose once some of the material is cut back on the flare to fender edge and a bunch of massage work, they should be fine.

I haven't read back in the history, but some how I had it in my mind that the rockers were steel too. Doesn't matter, I wanted the glass ones anyways.

Thanks for all your work Todd.

Now I will have to keep my eyes open for another oil tank group buy!

Posted by: jmill Sep 29 2008, 08:56 PM

Swap them around to be sure that they're on the correct side. They look quite similar and it's easy to mix them up. Mine fit great but you could surf down the waves on them.

They should fit pretty good, unless FedEx did a number on them.

Original M471 rockers were glass... George pulled these directly off a factory set. Last I heard on the rockers was that they were being reworked.

It's not the case of sheetmetal sticking way up in the air (as it would be if it was on the wrong side or end). If I lay it up on the fender I can slip the palm of my hand through some of the body gaps because the lip is so wavy.

Like I said in my last post, just have to massage them to make them fit nice.

I will say that the GT curves in the sheet metal look very good. Nothing funny going on there.

Unfortunetly I won't be able to have any fun with these until I start my 914-6 gt project in at least another year. Busy trying to get my garage plans approved with the city sheeplove.gif and then get it built smash.gif . Just don't have the shop space to do a full tear down right now. wacko.gif Have to give these a shot of primer so they will keep until then.

any news on the rockers?

Posted by: jmill Oct 31 2008, 07:34 AM

I got mine but they're going back. One side was poorly repaired at the jack post hole and the other side was pealing like a fruit roll-up. Someone pull the "kick me sign" off my back. It seems like I'm getting the rejects. Looking past the obvious defects in mine they look to be very nice. I called AA and said I wasn't happy with the rockers. They said go ahead and send them back. At least they have the customer service side handled.

Posted by: db9146 Oct 31 2008, 10:04 PM

I went by today and picked up my flares in person. I was trying to wait until the rockers were ready as well so that I didn't have to make another trip but I decided not to wait any longer on the flares.

When I inquired today about the rockers, I couldn't get any info....no idea when they will be ready. In fact, when I asked today if any rockers had been shipped, they said no.

Posted by: jmill Oct 31 2008, 10:08 PM

Thats funny because I've got a set here that I'm waiting for FedEx to ship back to them. I can snap a pic of them if anyone is curious. It does lend some truth to my feeling that I got the rejects.

Posted by: scraperhand Nov 11 2008, 07:53 AM

Todd, have you had any contact with AA regarding the rockers?

Posted by: Todd Enlund Nov 11 2008, 11:15 AM

I just got a message from George. The first batch was unacceptable even after repairs, and they are test fitting a piece from a new run tomorrow. If it fits properly, they will have the production run in three weeks.

Posted by: jmill Nov 11 2008, 02:11 PM

It's good that they didn't send them all out. My set must have slipped through the QC checks. I don't mind waiting another 3 weeks for a quality set. If one of you absolutely needs a set ASAP the one I sent back might be available. The overall lines looked good. I just didn't feel like doing FG repairs along with all the wave straightening I'm going to need to do.

Posted by: scraperhand Nov 11 2008, 03:07 PM

Thanks Todd,Jmill i'll wait, the less work to do the better,i already have alot to do.

Posted by: Todd Enlund Nov 11 2008, 03:18 PM

HEY GEORGE!!!!

Don't forget me! You shipped me one of the first seven sets, and there were a number of problems. You promised to ship me a new set when you got the reworked ones in! That was August! I have the originals boxed and ready to go back.

Got my rockers the other day. I haven't fit them to the car yet but I can say they look fantastic. Well worth the wait. As soon as the temperature gets above -10 out here I'll see how they line up.

Posted by: charliew Jan 15 2009, 02:30 PM

I have the aa rockers and flares and have been following the threads on putting them on. You might want to check and see where you want the front flares to be exactly, some people that put them on thought they could be moved forward some to more center them on the wheel. If you do that you will need to lengthen the rocker.

Mine got here 10 minutes ago. Here's one just set in place:

Ordered a set from AA today but would really like to get started, they should be available from AA in a week or so. Will have a set shipped to you in return. Shipping paid plus $20 to cover your trouble or ?
