Well, a friend of mine pointed me to a red '74 914 for sale around the corner from my house. So I went by to see it. I talked with the owner, he's had it about 1 year now, but needs money. Anyway, I asked about the engine, and he says it's a 1.7l. After he swapped out the battery for a good one, he started it. It started very easily and we were going to take it around the block. When I was behind the wheel, he mentioned that there's no tag on it. Well, I'm not going to drive a red sports car in a little town without a license plate.
Anyway, here's a couple of question:
1. When I depressed the clutch, it was very easy to push, why? What's wrong?
2. The engine case had a W as the first letter, what year is the engine?
3. After seeing the pictures, what would you offer?
Here's the pics:
It used to have A/C, a sheet of metal was pop-riveted in place...
The front end damage was caused by rear-ending a cop car....
Here's some more..... How's this for creative welding.... The hell hole is covered up with bondo, the engine shelf is rusted through, the battery tray is gone, underneath the longitudinal it's rusted through the floor boards...
Nice single weber...
The floor boards are good, but there's water behind the seats, I think from the side windows, the rear window looks like it's been sealed recently... Oh, and the windshield has a huge spider crack in the middle of it... Also, couldn't open the front trunk from inside the car, there's a secret wire attached below the bumper..
Final pics.... BTW, the other half of the rear reflector is in the passenger's seat...
So, what would you offer?
-- Rob
The engine code "W" corresponds to a '70-'71 1.7L.
Rear ended a police car? How are the brakes?
$12,000, the paints an 8.
Hey, it can be buffed out....
Also, why would the clutch go to the floor, is that an adjustment issue or a failing pressure plate?
-- Rob
If you can weld, go for it.
From what I can see right up front it needs the following.
Suspension console
Hell hole
Inner fender
Rear of floors both sides.
Outer long
Bottom of long.
Clutch is the least of your worries on that one.
Rich
WTH is welded onto the suspension console?
I have 3 words for you:
"RUN FOREST RUN!"
Did you check behind the rockers?
So, nobody has any idea what the car is worth?
$1000
$800
$600
$500
Come on, somebody throw out a realistic number...... With the price of these cars going up, this could be a great parts car or project car....
BTW, I've replaced (2) suspension consoles and (2) engine shelves...
-- Rob
What doe's he want for it? Start at $500 and then send him here.
Rusty tub - $300
Running 1.7 - $200
901 Side Shifter - $150
The fun you'll have - priceless.
As for all questions, the answer is "42". The Cap'n
I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it. That would only be if it was just around the corner. If I had to drive to see it more like $200
