914World.com _ 914World Garage _ R/C 914 Body Group Buy - Closed

Posted by: djm914-6 Aug 21 2008, 08:44 AM

I'm just getting a feel for interest first. I've contacted the supplier to see if he's interested in shipping more of these to the US as well.

If this goes forward, I'll need payment up front and will of course offer painted bodies at a discount during the group buy period.

If you're interested, please let me know.

edit: Oh, depending on the EUR to Dollar exchange rate, the price shipped may be in the $40-$50 range, but I'm working on that.

Edit:
$33 per body
$12 shipping

If I have payment for more than 30 bodies by the time I order then, I'll refund you the $3 discount or put it towards a paint job. I want to place the order October 1st.

Now I just hope the Euro/Dollar rates don't change.

Send Check to:
David McLaughlin

Burlington MA 01803

In hopes of getting a few more orders, I'm keeping the buy open till the end of the week. If you want to pay by paypal, please add 5% to the total and use airboston@comcast.net for the account.

what do I need to know about sizes of these thigs??? confused24.gif

I think the last ones we had were 1/24th scale...can't remember for sure. If not 1/24th they may have been 1/32nd but I don't think that was it.

Posted by: 736conver Aug 21 2008, 09:54 AM

They were 1/24 lexan bodies last time. Gt style or stock style.

And they also were only $14 last time. Demick did that run. Is this from the same supplier as thats quite the jump in price.

Posted by: nsr-jamie Aug 21 2008, 10:06 AM

One of my good buddies at work has so many RC cars that he said he would give me a couple of them....I don'T know much about RC cars, but I would love to have a 914 one and especially with flares. Count me in!!

I'm pretty sure Dave's talking about the Carson 1/10 body

it fits the Tamiya M-02L as well as the M-04L Chassis

there might be some other Chassis that fit, but I always took the M-04L

I would be interested in one.

Actually the first R/C group buy was Demick's 1:24 scale bodies. Sometime after that, I did one for these 1:10 scale GT shells. These are designed to fit a Tamiya M04L chassis - 240mm Wheelbase/ 170mm width.

For some painted examples, go to my R/C Gallery ( http://www.airbostongraphics.com/galRC.htm ). If anyone has photos of their painted up, let see 'em.

Here are a few kits that will work for this body:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXPXS5&P=7

This one is a M04M (medium) but has the L (long) part included.
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFSG4&P=0

There are others out there, but these are an easy fit.

Rich, no, I don't have my car working yet. To many other things require my time or money.

Posted by: seanery Aug 21 2008, 11:23 AM

I'm down for 2 if they're the big ones!

Posted by: Wes V Aug 21 2008, 03:03 PM

If you have an original, how about taking a mold and make copies. (I don't think it would be illegal due to no longer being available)

Here is a youtube link showing how;

Then sell them to us for a reasonable price.

David, you have PM. I need 2.

Posted by: 7TPorsh Aug 21 2008, 03:55 PM

Not knowing a thing about RC; what would the entire cost of the car end up costing to put together?

QUOTE(7TPorsh @ Aug 21 2008, 05:55 PM) *

If you take the Beetle Kit from Tower Hobbies and add a radio, battery and charger, you come to around $220 depending on level of equipment. Add the 914 shell (about $45) you get a total of $265ish. Like full size race cars, you can get in real deap real fast, but this is a basic kit. All you would need is paint and time to assemble (about 1 to 2 nights). If you want to go faster, just add money.

Got your PM Joe. Sounds like we have a few interested, I'll come up with an estimate to give to the vender so I can nail down a price.

Much harder than it looks and the body is still available just not in the US. I'm starting to make some small parts, but to make a vacuum molding machine to pull consistant 1:10 scall shells require quite a layout not to mention skill.

Posted by: roadster fan Aug 22 2008, 07:11 AM

I am in for 2. Can't wait, something else 914 related to spend money on chair.gif

Jim

Posted by: djm914-6 Aug 22 2008, 07:33 AM

looks like we have some interest. I'll estimate 25 bodies and see what the dealer comes back with for a total shipping price. The cost per body is 19,95EUR to that I'll devide the shipping costs from Germany and add something to get it from here to each buyer. Usually I can ship a body anywhere in the US for about $8 to $10.

I'm emailing the vendor now to get a final price per unit based on the twenty requests I see here. I'll need to add to that: shipping from here to everyone including any boxes or envelopes. I'm not looking to make any money, but I can not chance loosing any either so bear with me for final pricing I want to make sure I get it all right.

Posted by: djm914-6 Aug 26 2008, 07:19 AM

Here's where we stand right now...

QUOTE
the shipping quote up to 20 Bodies is 32,00 Euro.
Up from 30 bodies there is a possible discount of 10 percent.
The shipping quote for 30-40 bodies is 42,00 Euro

I'll need to divide these prices by the number of bodies and also add to it shipping (including some sort of packaging) from here to everyone.

The last group buy, I used a heavy padded envelope; did that work out well or should I use boxes?

Posted by: jdogg Aug 26 2008, 08:45 AM

Keep me in the loop, I'm in for 2.

Posted by: Gint Aug 26 2008, 02:16 PM

Posted by: seanery Aug 26 2008, 02:44 PM

If you use priority mail they will provide packaging. They'll even deliver the empty boxes to your door.

Posted by: djm914-6 Sep 1 2008, 06:40 PM

No push on this David. I was out of town for 4 days and didn't see anything going on.

Posted by: djm914-6 Sep 15 2008, 02:07 PM

Ok, I forced some time into my schedule to figure out what to do here. Assuming we have less than 30 bodies being purchased the numbers look like this...

$33 per body
$12 shipping

If I have payment for more than 30 bodies by the time I order then, I'll refund you the $3 discount or put it towards a paint job. I want to place the order October 1st.

Now I just hope the Euro/Dollar rates don't change.

This isn't looking good.
I've received three checks so far which is far from the numbers that the poll showed. Though that was somewhat expected. It's looking like I'm gonna be holding the bag again and covering the balance of the shipping fees. I got a quote for the shipping and just divided that by 20 bodies. One of these day's I'll learn and start building up some extra into the price.

Anyway, I'll update the first post with people who paid so that y'all can see that I received the payment you sent or if it's lost. I'll do this after todays mail arrives.

I'll order the bodies on (or around) 10/01 I'm sure it will take a week to get these from Germany then I'll need to box them and ship them in my free time (with three jobs, what free time???) I figure about two weeks total, but I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.

Way too small for the RS4 (I tried on mine). The size is posted on the first post. I do not want to take paypal but if you add 5% to the total then I will. I'm already loosing money on this deal, I can't loose any more.

Posted by: djm914-6 Oct 1 2008, 05:50 PM

Sure do, Joe. I have several hours each day that I waste sleeping. Lets see, three of four going to... what event is that? Then first come first serve on the painting. Looks like several people want their cars painted, so that means I'll be able to start working on the 1:1 scale 914 again.

I'm also hoping to create a couple of "art cars" from these to. I know most people want regular single color paint jobs, but with luck someone will like the art car look too... or at lease a more realistic rusty car. Now where did I put those 1:10 scale jack stands...

Update:
I just received an email this morning from the vendor in Germany. He shipped the bodies yesterday. They originally didn't have enough to fill the order and was waiting for enough to be made. He said to expect the shipment to arrive here in 20 to 30 days.

I've ordered the shipping boxes and those will be here this week. so I can get the bodies to the post office soon after the shipment arrives in Massachusetts.

Posted by: djm914-6 Nov 25 2008, 03:05 PM

Big box arrived from Germany tonight. It was a bit smooshed but a quick inspection showed everything should be alright. I'll dig into it and start boxed up the unpainted orders tomorrow or Friday depending on my work schedule.

Posted by: djm914-6 Dec 4 2008, 01:59 PM

The first of the orders have been shipped. If you asked for a blank shell (or two) then the package is on it's way via priority mail (first class for the one international).

I"m starting on the paint orders now. Two have requested their cars by Christmas, so I'm trying to do those first (plus I think they may have paid first too). I need to know how the cars are being painted. If you are waiting for a quote from me then please send me an email... Actually from this point on, I want too keep everything off the boards as far as painting is concerned. My email address is airboston@comcast.net, please drop me an email stating exactly the paint scheme you want and I'll let you know what it'll cost (including 914 family discount).

To be Painted:
Francisco Camacho 2
Gary Gartner 1
Kelly Thorson (echocanyons) 1
Brett Laurila (BKLA) 2
Joe Sharp ?
George Henry 2
Mike Ginter 2

FYI:
Don't forget to remove the clear outer plastic covering before applying your decals. Usually there is a sticker to remind you to do this but it looks like the manufacturer forgot these this time.

I'm working on the first few shells now and must say that I'm not that pleased. The mold lines are barely visible. cutting the wheel openings and front spoiler is difficult and time consuming.

Ok, I'm really not happy with these new shells. It's too late to return anything. I don't know if I could expect any sort of refund either.

Here's a copy of an email I wrote to the store owner in Germany:
Mr. .....,
I’m writing to ask you about these Carson shells. I still have a couple from the initial batch and was just shipped another from Austria as well. These are solid and very clear plus they have a sticker on the roof (schutzfolie) and on the side (Carson 13284). The mold lines are clear and the body is tough to cut through with a Xacto knife. Lastly, the extra plastic forms a rectangle. This new batch on the other hand is a totally different story. The plastic is so thin, it barely takes two passes with a knife to cut all the way through. The molded lines are barely visible and the corners are not as tight. The plastic is also quite cloudy plus there are no stickers. There is a huge difference in quality. I was wondering if I should be talking to you or directly to Carson. I’m not looking to return any as most have already been distributed throughout the USA with the remaining few here for me to paint and ship to my customers. I guess I’m just wondering why the difference. It almost looks like two different places pulled the shells. One had better plastic and higher vacuum and the other cutting corners.

The reply I got:

QUOTE
Hello Mr. McLaughlin,

thank you for your Email.

I know that Carson testet a new supplier for their bodies for a while, but they
stayed at their old one. Maybe this is the reason for the different bodies.
I´ll ask them if you want.

Please advise.

For the next order i´ll look to get the better ones, ok ??

Here's a measured photo for mounting the prepainted bodies to a Tamiya M04L chassis. I took the measurments from the mold lines as shown using a cloth measuring tape (raid the wife's sewing drawer). I normally use a Dremel tool with a cone cutting bit and a low speed.

Here's a measured photo for mounting the prepainted bodies to a Tamiya M04L chassis. I took the measurments from the mold lines as shown using a cloth measuring tape (raid the wife's sewing drawer). I normally use a Dremel tool with a cone cutting bit and a low speed.

Looks like mine smile.gif

Rob, PM sent.
Joe, I think we're ok, but I'll run the numbers just anyway.
Gwen, I think that was the same red I painted your's in. I still liked the pink car though.

I've run into a problem with my painting of these cars. I think I've PMed or emailed everyone affected, but just in case, here's whats going on. I ran out of chrome paint. I tried ordering my regular bottles from my supplier but they are on back order. I looked at the paint companied own website and they are advertising a blow out sale of their smaller bottles of chrome so I ordered two. That was three weeks ago at least. I don't have the paint, the company won't return calls or emails and they have my CC number. So that I don't delay my outstanding orders any longer, I ordered a rattle can of the chrome (looks as good, but isn't as precise, so it's more wasteful and makes removing the mask more difficult). I'm told that will arrive by the 10th or so.

On a side note, check out this guys car: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom.asp?id=19357
(scroll down as he's posted several blog entries on the 914)
He's using HPI classic wheels that are painted out slightly to resemble Fuch rims.

David,
I got your PM... Sorry I haven't gotten back to you but they are gluing me back together little by little. Had surgery last week... Still not able to get around much.
Yes on the drilling for chassis...
Here is a pic of a real IPB Autosport racecar. As you can see it is just the same font but bold for the IPB part. If you can, I would want that across the top of the windshield...

Got my bodies last thursday... too nice to play with.... display only (for a while anyway!)

Installed some HPI vintage style wheels - with a little black paint, they will (almost) look like fuchs!

Well Done Lad!

I figured the yellow one was for running and the red one was for display or easy running.

If you want to preserve them longer, get some reinforced tape and put it where the tires will rub the body (front lid especially).

2 Olean Road
Burlington MA 01803

In hopes of getting a few more orders, I'm keeping the buy open till the end of the week. If you want to pay by paypal, please add 5% to the total and use airboston@comcast.net for the account.

Orders (payment received):
George Henry - 2 Bodies (hold for paint)
Jason Panciera - 2 Bodies
Gary Gartner - 1 Body Painted
Chris Glanville (Nor.Cal.914) - 1 Body
Joe Sharp - 5?? Painted??
Jamie Wheeler - 2 Bodies
Kelly Thorson (echocanyons) - 1 Body Painted
Brett Laurila (BKLA) - 2 Bodies / 1 Painted
Charles McLendon - 1 Body
James Knowlton - 2 Bodies
Mike Ginter - 2 Bodies
Robert Sime - 1 Body
Van Svenson - 1 Body
Francisco Camacho - 2 Bodies

I have one left from the group buy that I did. I can also start another group buy and have them out in time for Christmas.
