I kept smelling gasoline in the cabin so I did some checking and found the filter was moist and has a gas odor. It is under the tank and I can get to it from the front pump access cover. The lines and filter were replaced 2 years ago and the lines look good. My question is, is this very common? It is a genuine Porsche replacement filter.

It could be the fittings on the tank that are weeping.

I pulled the tank up and checked. Everything was dry but the filter.

Sounds like you answered your own question.

They are cheap, replace it and see if it fixes your issue.

Not a particularly uncommon problem. We use metal filters on the earlier cars, but they don't fit yours. The Cap'n

I had a friend William Harris who blew out a brand new one..
Apparently the latest batch is junk and they do leak.
I was also told go with a BMW filter, same fittings on each end...
