914World.com _ 914World Garage _ OT: new old battery

Posted by: machina Sep 4 2008, 09:45 AM

the 12v battery in my generator is basically brand new but has been sitting for three years (its a lead acid)

is it chargeable and useable or should i just stop typing now and go buy a new one?

It is likely a lost cause. However, if it is a decent quality battery it just may surprise you and come back to life. Try to charge it carefully, and watch the case temperature. It will have reduced life in any event. Was it automotive or deep cycle; the deep cycle would have a much better chance of living?

I just brought an Optima back to life after 4+ years of sitting. Anything is possible.....

thanks guys, im just going to get a new one, its basically a small automotive type battery.

Genset is 16KW, burns natural gas so i just plug it into the house service with a QD fitting.

Hope I dont need it but with 3 hurricanes aimed at us, we're a little tense right now.
